“Bury Your Casket” Single Art

Not only is AGAINST ALL ODDS the name of hard rock outfit THE MENDENHALL EXPERIMENT (TMX)’s recent 2022 EP, but it’s also the message behind the band itself. TMX was formed in 2008 by guitarist/songwriter Brandon Mendenhall who was born with the incurable neurological disease Cerebral Palsy which limits mobility on the left side of his body. Determined by his love of music, MENDENHALL learned how to play guitar which eventually aided in the rehabilitation of movement in his left hand without surgical intervention. Enlisting bassist Nathan Stockton—who also overcame his disability of childhood deafness—TMX was developed and eventually became the subject of the award-winning documentary MIND OVER MATTER (Sumerian Films) directed by French filmmaker Sébastien Paquet (Korn, Wounded Warriors). The band have since released music with guest artists including James “Munky” Shaffer (Korn) and Danny Lohner (NIN, A Perfect Circle) and performed in front of audiences across the country alongside John 5, P.O.D., Alien Ant Farm, Kill Devil Hill, Fear Factory, Prong, Flaw, Metal Allegiance, Smile Empty Soul, Flaw, Co-Op and Breaking In A Sequence (BIAS) in addition to festival appearances at Aftershock Festival and Rocklahoma.

TMX have today (5/12) shared their new single, “Bury Your Casket,” which is available digitally across all platforms HERE. The aggressive-yet-catchy track’s meaning is “Relationships are sometimes meant to die in order to move onto the next evolutionary chapter,” according to guitarist/songwriter MIKE LIRA. “Sometimes that can be one of the hardest things in life to accept.” MENDENHALL adds, “In life, death is the only absolute; everything else is subject to change. Everyone you befriend along the way is a lesson, good, bad or indifferent, and as you grow and progress your circle gets smaller.”

On writing “Bury Your Casket,” LIRA comments: “This song is definitely one of my favorites. It’s melodic, heavy and a bit technical. It was one of those songs that came together smoothly, but also challenged me at times.”

“‘Bury Your Casket’ has been a fan favorite in our live set for years and my personal favorite to perform, it’s thrashy with a splash of punk and a solid breakdown,” shares MENDENHALL. “It’s the perfect combination to get your blood pumping and the crowd moving with a hook that will get stuck in your head for the rest of the night.” Hear more about “Bury Your Casket” and the band’s journey in the Q&A with MENDENHALL below.

The documentary shows MENDENHALL, LIRA, STOCKTON along with drummer Justin Luebeck and new vocalist Alyce Hayes in the studio with a special appearance from Suicide Silence guitarist Chris Garza who guested on the EP’s debut single “Pulse Of The Lost.”

Q&A with Brandon Mendenhall

What and/or who inspired you to pursue a career in the music industry?

“Growing up I was influenced by bands and guitarists from Korn, Pantera, and NIN. It was Munky from Korn’s story about how he used the guitar to rehabilitate his left index finger after an ATV accident almost tore it off that became the catalyst for me believing in myself and my abilities on guitar and in music.”

You were diagnosed with the incurable neurological disease cerebral palsy which affects physical movement. Can you describe some of the challenges you faced when learning to play guitar and how you overcame and/or continue to work around them?

“My journey with Cerebral Palsy and the guitar has not been an easy one. I don’t feel as though I’m one of those naturally talented players, I have had to earn my skill level.”

“My left hand is heavily affected by the CP, practically paralyzed in a way. I had to figure out a work around from playing chords the traditional way, and it wasn’t until I learned about Keith Richards using open and drop tunings as an alternative that things began to click for me on the instrument.”

“My progress on the guitar, like most musicians is ongoing, probably more physical than most. I feel as though I have to work twice as hard as your average player to stay in the game and keep the mobility I’ve gained over the years crisp. Also, I’m still learning as a player and a songwriter. I’ll never stop learning, that’s part of the fun and what keeps things creative. I wouldn’t be who I am today without having Cerebral Palsy; it’s this immense gift that’s given me an ability (with my guitar playing) to inspire and help others around the world, and for that I am blessed.”

Your new EP is titled ‘Against All Odds,’ can you share what that phrase means to you?

“‘Against All Odds’ really lived up to its name…From overcoming lineup changes, living through a global pandemic and persevering though ‘the sophomore slump,’ we delivered a killer yet more well-rounded EP than our debut.”

“To me, ‘Against All Odds’ means decoding the matrix–metaphorically finding yourself and what works for you in music, your formula or sound, and then going all in on your path to victory and success.”

Tell us more about your new single “Bury Your Casket” and where the song’s inspiration came from?

“All the credit goes to our lead guitarist Mike Lira on ‘Bury Your Casket.’ It’s truly his creation. He wanted to create a modern catchy but heavy tune that really got the crowd moving. Lyrically the song speaks to closing the chapter on a toxic period in your life, to be able to grow and move forward from life’s lesson.”

What are some of the influences that go into creating TMX’s sound?

“Life and the world around us is the biggest influence on our music currently. We draw from the experiences we go through personally and others we see or hear about and become inspired to pull some energy from.”

If you had to describe your music in five or less words, what would they be?

“Heavy Melodic Inspiration.”

What is a piece of advice you wish you were told that you would give to others that suffer from disabilities about pursuing a music career?

“The advice I would give to others with disabilities pursuing music is that you CAN do it! Never give up. It’s a journey, so enjoy it and have patience while being persistent. Also, don’t waste time by letting others stall your progress, keep your goals in motion. Lastly, manage your spending and invest your capital into your career in ways that it comes back to you.”

You’ve previously collaborated with James “Munky” Shaffer of Korn and Chris Garza of Suicide Silence. What other musicians would you like to collaborate with?

“Collaborations are one of my favorite things about what we do. There’s five on the top of my list to achieve right now:John 5, Dizzy Reed, Wolfgang Van Halen, Rick Allen and Tony Iommi–in no particular order and all for various reasons. Some we’ve talked about, some others are still dreams but anything is possible, and we’ll see what the universe has in store for us.”

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing instead?

“If I wasn’t a musician, I’d probably pursue a career in some sort of social work or counseling. I find that helping and giving back to others is the most rewarding thing in life.”

EXTREME have been forced to cancel their scheduled performance at M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, MD on Saturday, May 6 after guitarist Nuno Bettencourt suffered a knee injury, resulting in his inability to perform this weekend.

Bettencourt shares, “I am seriously bummed out that Extreme are unable to perform for everyone at M3 Rock Festival as we’ve been looking forward to the festival for several months. We apologize for the inconvenience to fans attending the festival. I can’t wait to get back on the stage once I’m all mended up.”

The band will continue to appear as scheduled for all upcoming dates; their next show is June 2 at Best of Blues & Rock Festival in Sao Paulo, BR alongside Tom Morello. About The HU

In 2019, an NPR story put a spotlight on “a band from Mongolia that blends the screaming guitars of heavy metal and traditional Mongolian guttural singing,” accurately highlighting the cultural importance and unique musical identity of The HU. Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, The HU—comprised of producer Dashka along with members Gala, Jaya, Temka, and Enkush—are a modern rock group rooted in the tradition of their homeland. The band’s name translates to the Mongolian root word for “human being,” and their unique approach blends instruments like the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp) and throat singing with contemporary sounds, creating a unique sonic profile that they call “Hunnu Rock.”

Their debut album, 2019 ‘s The Gereg, debuted at #1 on the World Album and Top New Artist Charts while receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Billboard, NPR, GQ, The Guardian, The Independent, Revolver, and even Sir Elton John himself. Their appeal was instantly recognized globally with sold-out tours across the world in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia and acknowledged by their home country who awarded them Mongolia’s highest state award, The Order of Genghis Khan, which was granted to the band by the President of Mongolia, Kh. Battulga in 2020.

A deluxe version of The Gereg included collaborations with Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, and caught the attention of Metallica, who heard their Mongolian rendition of “Sad But True,” and then enlisted them to take part on their Metallica Blacklist album, released in 2021 with The HU’s cover of “Through The Never” alongside other high-profile guest artists like Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Phoebe Bridgers, J Balvin, St. Vincent and many more. The band was also made “canon” in the Star Wars fandom after they wrote and recorded an original song for EA Games’ Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order which was featured in its gameplay.

THE HU released their second album Rumble Of Thunder in 2022 via Better Noise Music while continuing to tour across the globe, adding in dates in Japan and festival appearances at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Download Festival and more. In October 2022, the band were featured on the soundtrack for Better Noise Films’ thriller The Retaliators and appeared on screen. In November of 2022, The HU became the first-ever rock/metal band to receive the prestigious UNESCO “Artist of Peace” Designation at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, FR by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. Previous recipients include Celine Dion, Shirley Bassey, Sarah Brightman and more.

In March 2023, THE HU further added to their accreditations by becoming the first-ever Mongolian band to perform in the metaverse following their virtual concert, “Rumble of Thunder V1.1.” To date, The HU have accumulated over 329 million combined streams and 290 million video views.

“I knew when I heard this track that we had something,” shares REDDSTAR. “Not only does the song have a lot of meaning but I like how Hyro and I approached it from our own perspectives. “‘Head Under Water’ is as authentic and real as a song can get,” comments SUGARMAN. “The second I heard this track, I knew I needed to be a part of it. Feeding off the raw rock energy, I dug deep to bring as many melodic and off-the-wall guitar elements to the table as I possibly could. Playing through a slurred drunken swagger, the solo and guitar playing gets more concise and razor sharp as the song progresses. Hyro and Reddstar spit the sickest flows and heaviest lyrics I’ve ever heard, and that meant that I needed to do the same. Moments before I started to write and record I got a call from my doctor with the most terrifying medical news that a person could get, so I poured myself into this solo, and into this song. I know ‘Head Under Water’ will hit you like it hit me, because this feeling is so real for so many of us.”

UNESCO “Artist of Peace” designees THE HU have become a global sensation with their groundbreaking blend of traditional Mongolian throat singing and native instrumentation with modern western rock which they describe as “hunnu rock.” Their namesake, “Hu,” corresponds to the root of the word “human being” in Mongolian and represents their commitment to spread awareness for cultural diversity, respect for nature and equality for humankind throughout their music. To celebrate World Earth Day (April 22), THE HU have announced plans to plant 12,000 Siberian Elm trees in the desert-barren area of Southeastern Mongolia in the shape of their logo–a one-horned leopard, based off an ancient symbol used by the Hun tribes. The LandArt campaign is in partnership with the environmental institution, SHAMBALE2056 Engineering Campus, LLC, which has been relentlessly working in the area on several restoration projects and eco-friendly irrigation and energy systems. The trees being planted are Siberian Elms due to their strong root system and low water requirements which will help fight the rapid deforestation of the Gobi because of sandstorms and climate change. Digging efforts will begin in May and THE HU will offer fans the opportunity to purchase a tree to help fund the cause, details of which will be announced in the coming weeks.

As midnight strikes in Ulaanbaatar on World Earth Day, THE HU have shared the English-translated lyric video for their environment-focused single “Mother Nature,” taken from the forthcoming deluxe version of their 2022 album RUMBLE OF THUNDER due June 30 via Better Noise Music.

“Everyone in this world belongs to a mother and this song narrates the similarities between one’s relationship with their mother and the connection between humans and the Earth,” describes THE HU. “In a way, Earth is another mother that bore us to this world. In Mongolia, mothers are highly regarded and respected and we believe that even after death, their soul protects their child as their love is limitless.”

To date, THE HU have amassed over 329 million combined streams across digital platforms, 290 million video views, two Top 5 Mainstream Rock charting radio singles, sold-out worldwide headlining tours and appearances at the world’s biggest music festivals (Download, Coachella, Lollapalooza). Comprised of veterans of all four branches of the military, alternative rock outfit SILENCE & LIGHT were formed out of Raleigh, NC in 2017 by former Army Ranger and Special Forces soldier and rhythm guitarist Jason Everman (ex-Nirvana, Soundgarden) and former Delta Force Operator and lead guitarist Brad Thomas. The band has now announced their sophomore album COULDA, SHOULDA, WOULDA… will be released on June 23 with a portion of profits being donated to non-profit organizations that support veterans and first responders. To date, the band has donated over $5,000 in royalties to organizations including Warrior’s Heart.

The album’s debut single “Slinky” will be available to stream and/or download across digital platforms tomorrow, April 21; pre-save it HERE. SILENCE & LIGHT–which in addition to Everman and Thomas includes former Marine Raider Tyson Stahl on bass, Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Fred Cowell on vocals and Navy veteran Justin Myers on drums—have performed across the US with acts including Lenny Kravitz, Old Dominion Band and Third Eye Blind as well as having appeared at several fundraising concerts for veteran causes. The band will be seen performing at The Eagle’s Dare in downtown Wilmington, NC as part of the city’s “Free Concert Friday” music series on June 23. The show is free and proceeds from the event will be going to support the Marine Raider Foundation.

With four Top 10 singles, over 600 million all-time streams and more than 75 million video views to date, FROM ASHES TO NEW deliver a distinctive blend of hard rock, hip-hop, electronic and alternative music which will be further highlighted on their forthcoming album BLACKOUT due July 28 via Better Noise Music. The Lancaster, PA-based group will be giving fans across the U.S. a sneak preview of new material as they continue their current tour alongside rock luminaries Shinedown and Three Days Grace throughout May 9, followed by a short run of dates alongside Bullet For My Valentine surrounding festival appearances including Welcome to Rockville and Sonic Temple.

Earlier this week, FROM ASHES TO NEW announced they will continue to tour throughout the summer supporting In This Moment and Motionless In White on “The Dark Horizon Tour” alongside Fit For A King from July 8 to August 19. BLACKOUT conceptually acts as a prequel to FROM ASHES TO NEW’s 2016 debut album DAY ONE and encapsulates the distress of a pre-apocalyptic world mirroring the frame of mind the world felt during the 2020 pandemic at which time the album was written. The 12-track album was recorded with FROM ASHES TO NEW’s longtime collaborators and producers Grant McFarland and Carson Slovak to deliver a fresh spin on the sound that broke them onto the scene. With previously released tracks including “Until We Break (feat. Matty Mullins of Memphis Mayfire),” “Nightmare,” “Heartache” and their latest single, “Hate Me Too,” FROM ASHES TO NEW captivate listeners with heavy driven music and angsty lyrics that all walks of people can find common ground with.
