Top 10 Places to See Live Music in Phoenix, AZ

In October of 2021, I became one of many California transplants to join the California pandemic exodus, ending up a six-hour drive southeast to the hot, dry and vast desert valleys of Phoenix, AZ. Having spent over 11 years living in the entertainment capital of the West coast, I was a bit worried I wouldn’t have as much to do, but to the contrary—over the past seven months I’ve gone to more events and shows than I had previously in L.A.   As I continue to explore my new city, I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite places–obvious and not so obvious–to see live music in the budding city so far.

Top 10 Places to See Live Music in Phoenix, AZ

    1. The Van Buren (https://www.thevanburenphx.com) is my hands-down favorite venue in town to catch a show. With a spacious outdoor bar/lounge and theatre-style open floor plan, there’s no ‘bad view’ in the house and even for packed shows, it’s pretty easy to slide your way to the front. They also have one of the coolest backstage ‘green rooms’ that I’ve experienced, including an entire wall of books for artists to peruse.
    2. Boondocks (Tempe) (https://tempe.boondocksaz.com/) is a brand new sports bar/venue that is bringing live entertainment back to Tempe. With an assortment of cover bands, like Gail & The Night Owls, and up-and coming acts, you can grab some standard fare bar food and watch a Suns game then stay for the music. Did I mention they have a reverse happy hour during the week too?
    3. Old Town Tavern (https://www.oldtowntavernaz.com) is a local’s favorite bar in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. Located adjacent to the Scottsdale Civic Center Park, the small two-level bar with open air seating and an outdoor patio has live acoustic music every night of the week from an array of local musicians ranging from classic rock and blues to country and singer-songwriter. A few Gin Blossoms members have been known to drop in for a surprise set on occasion.
    4. Tempe Marketplace (https://tempemarketplace.com/concerts/) is an open-air shopping center with over 100 retail stores and restaurants with an outdoor stage area in the center. They often host free shows throughout the year featuring national and local acts. Most recently Escape the Fate and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus took part in their Rock It Up Spring Concert series.
    5. Frasher’s Tavern (https://www.frasherstavern.com/) is not only the best place to get a steak in Scottsdale, but also hosts intimate acoustic shows on occasions. SRO clients, The Black Moods, have performed here for the release of their “Sunshine” wine which the restaurant paired with a set dinner menu and a signed bottle.
    6. Rebel Lounge (https://therebellounge.com/) is one of my favorite places to see a rock/punk show in Phoenix. If you’re looking for a sweaty, headbanging and mosh-friendly venue, look no further.
    7. Coach House (https://www.coachhousescottsdale.com/) is the oldest dive bar in Scottsdale. It’s adorned with colored lightbulbs (wrapped around the inside and outside of the open-air building), wrapping paper and tinsel. Open only at night, it’s impossible to miss.
    8. Yucca Tap Room (http://www.yuccatap.com/) is the oldest venue in Tempe and located in the middle of a strip mall plaza that looks vacated minus a few random businesses and a weed shop. An intimate venue with a spacious dance floor with a full arcade attached and a Tiki speakeasy! Play some Iron Maiden or Rush pinball before catching a touring or local act and make sure to head to the bar for an extensive craft beer selection.
    9. Chars Live Music (https://charslive.com) is the revamped and rebranded venue formerly known Char’s Has The Blues, an r&b, jazz and soul nightclub. A great spot for a date night, they have amazing specialty cocktails served in a dark-lit ambience. They’ve expanded genres so you can also catch a DJ or drag show now.
    10. Rusty Spur Saloon (https://rustyspursaloon.com) is a country western dive bar, if you couldn’t tell by the name. It’s randomly popular with celebrities and has served everyone from John Wayne and Clint Eastwood to Jennifer Aniston and even Post Malone. They have music seven days a week and with an 80-person capacity it quickly fills up on the weekends.

WALSH was born and raised in Medina, NY and moved to Los Angeles in 2009 to pursue a career in the music industry after spending a year abroad in London, UK studying Shakespeare and Creative Literature. For nearly the next decade, she developed her career in music and entertainment publicity with in-house positions at labels including Century Media/SONY and Prosthetic Records along with working independently and with various boutique PR and management firms on national campaigns for a diverse range of artists including Marty Friedman, Arch Enemy, Animals As Leader, Skeletonwitch, Body Count and Scale The Summit, events such as Chris Hardwick‘s Id10t Music Festival And Comic Con-ival and ALT 98.7’s Big Adventure Festival, and on campaigns for artist-exclusive craft beer collaborations including Pennywise’s “Pennywiser” IPA (Lost Coast Brewery) and Prosthetic Record’s “Blood Junkie” IPA (Three Weavers Brewing Company).

With its iconic and cutting-edge artist roster–and its representation of internationally heralded music festivals, tours, events and companies–the company has the eyes and ears of America’s exuberant music fans. That diversity enables…[the company]…to obtain coverage in multiple outlets and mediums, from underground to mainstream.” The company began as MSO in 1995 and rebranded as SRO, reflecting Rondan’s promotion to partner, in 2019. Pop culture and punk rock fans rejoice! The anime-meets-NY punk rock collective OSAKA POPSTAR have returned with a second serving of “deeply infectious pop punk” (AMP) on their upcoming May 6 release, EAR CANDY via Misfits Records in association with Demented Punk. Fronted and produced by longtime Misfits and Ramones collaborator John Cafiero (vocals), OSAKA POPSTAR is backed by a revolving line-up of noteworthy punk musicians who deliver crunchy riffs and power pop melodies. EAR CANDY highlights the band’s sweet new original single “Lost And Found” and also brings new energy to classic confectionery singles including The Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar,” The Partridge Family’s “I Think I Love You,” and The Monkees “All Of Your Toys.”

EAR CANDY was recorded with Dean Rispler (The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black) on guitar and bass and Jon Wurster (Superchunk, The Mountain Goats, Bob Mould) on drums and features guest backing vocals from indie rocker Colleen Green. It will be made available digitally as well as on CD and Limited-Edition candy swirl ‘bite’ vinyl, which can be seen included in the cover artwork (pictured above) illustrated by Josh Howard (Dead@17 comics). OSAKA POPSTAR recently unveiled a deluxe expanded and remastered edition of their debut album, OSAKA POPSTAR AND THE AMERICAN LEGENDS OF PUNK, which features a backing lineup of punk rock legends Jerry Only (The Misfits), Marky Ramone (Ramones), Dez Cadena (Black Flag) and Ivan Julian (Richard Hell & The Voidoids) along with a special guest appearance from the late outsider music icon Daniel Johnston. The deluxe release includes a new mix of the cereal-inspired track, “Where’s The Cap’n” and newly added bonus tracks including, “Super Hero.”

It also includes a previously unreleased studio version of OSAKA POPSTAR’s cover of Ramones’ “Beat On The Brat”—which is currently in rotation on SiriusXM’s ‘Faction Punk’ station—and was recorded with Cafiero on vocals, Rispler on guitars, Sal Maida (Sparks) on bass and Dennis Diken (The Smithereens) on drums.

The band teamed up with Grammy Award-winning artist “Weird Al” Yankovic for Record Store Day Black Friday 2021 to release a “blistering, accordion-tinged cover” (Rolling Stone) exclusive 12-inch split, BEAT ON THE BRAT which immediately sold out and was listed as one of the Top 5 and Top 10 Record Store Day releases across several notable media outlets including iHeart Radio News. It included a studio version of “Beat On The Brat” recorded with “Weird Al” on vocals and accordion backed by Osaka Popstar in addition to two previously unreleased live tracks (“Beat On The Brat” and “I Wanna Be Sedated”) performed by “Weird Al” and his band on the “Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill Advised Vanity Tour.” Its flip side includes Osaka Popstar’s own studio version of “Beat On The Brat,” featured on the aforementioned expanded release, along with three other live versions exclusively released on vinyl performed by the band. “How could I not contribute to this project,” says “Weird Al.” “I love punk music…I selected ‘Beat on the Brat’ by the Ramones, because I truly believe it’s the most upbeat, danceable song about child abuse ever written.”

“We’re hanging out with the worst of them,
we make the bad look good.
After parties where you can’t invite your friends,
yea, this is Hollywood.”

Blazing rock trio THE BLACK MOODS warm up listeners with another new track, “Hollywood,” taken from their upcoming June 3 album INTO THE NIGHT via Wit Hustle/The Orchard/Steelhorse Entertainment. Streaming now across all digital platforms, “Hollywood” unflinchingly looks at the dark side beneath the glitz and glamour of the star-studded entertainment capital. Listen here: https://orcd.co/tbmhollywood.

For INTO THE NIGHT, the Phoenix, AZ band–Josh Kennedy (vocals, guitar), Chico Diaz (drums) and Jordan Hoffman (bass)–reenlisted Grammy Award-nominated producer Johnny “K” Karkazis (3 Doors Down, Disturbed), who also worked with the trio on their critically acclaimed 2020 sophomore effort SUNSHINE, which produced the Top 20 rock track “Sunshine.” Unable to tour when the pandemic hit, the band packed up their studio and headed East to the Ozarks and set up a makeshift studio in their label owner’s home. At first, our plan was to record some songs in his basement,” shares Kennedy. “…but we wound up taking over the entire house from June to October (2020).”

Recording a full album inside a private residence required the band to get creative–drums were tracked in the wide-open living room, guitar amps were placed inside the walk-in closets and so on. THE BLACK MOODS spent the summer immersed in the most dynamic and diverse project of their career, mixing hard-hitting rock & roll with electric blues, punky attitude, and plenty of anthemic choruses. For Kennedy, who’d grown up just a short drive away, he’d come full circle returning to the Ozarks, the place where he’d first fallen in love with music. Citing influence from the classic sounds of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Creedence Clearwater Revival and even ’90s mainstays like Counting Crowes and Better Than Ezra, INTO THE NIGHT marked another chance to blend his influences from the past into a sound for the present.

INTO THE NIGHT’s 12 tracks were every bit as inspired as the recording sessions that produced them. “Saturday Night” paid tribute to the wild, celebratory thrill of the weekend, which the band portrayed in the rousing music video seen HERE, while “She Gets Out” (released November 2021) showcased a softer side of the band, with jangling acoustic guitars and tight vocal harmonies giving way to a singalong refrain. INTO THE NIGHT is an album that’s felt as much as heard, rooted in the stomp of drummer Chico Diaz‘s kick drum, the pulse of Jordan Hoffman‘s bass, and the larger-than-life presence of Josh Kennedy.

THE NOCTURNAL AFFAIR Q&A
with BRENDAN SHANE

• What’s the inspiration behind (META)MORPHOSIS and how did its name come about?

BRENDAN SHANE: “The idea for ‘(Meta)morphosis’ came to mind as I was healing from the loss of a close family member and going through a significant heartbreak. My previous material was dark and broody and was weighing me down before the band had even got off the ground. As I began to work on healing myself, my writing developed and allowed me to grow and expand as an artist. The entire album process morphed my perspective on life, love and the music industry. I’ve been working hard every day to continue to strive to be better and constantly morphing and evolving. I believe Bear Grylls famously once said, ‘Improvise, adapt, overcome,’ so that’s the advice I’ve followed.

• The definition of ‘metamorphosis’ is a change of physical form, structure or substance. If you had the ability of metamorphosis, what would you change to and why?

SHANE: “I love moths and I absolutely love bees. Both go through a complete metamorphosis. Though bees are known pollinators a lot of people don’t know the value moths bring to the ecosystem. They’re responsible for many things but one of which is pollinating plants at night while other insects can’t. I absolutely love nocturnal bugs and animals. Surprise, surprise!”

• (META)MORPHOSIS was produced by John Moyer (Disturbed) and mixed/mastered with Logan Mader.    How did you get connected to both of them and what was your favorite part about working with them on this album?

SHANE: “I’ve known John Moyer for over a decade. We first met when he produces a previous metal project of mine and we’ve been friends ever since. Aside from being a killer bass player, he’s an insane producer and songwriter and has always brought the absolute best out of me. Every time I think I’ve got his production style figured out he does a complete 180 and blows my mind. I had shared the project when it was in its early stages, and he was so supportive from the start. As it evolved, I sent over some demos of the newer sound and he said, ‘let’s get you into the studio.’ My immediate reply was to get Logan Mader involved.”

“I was originally connected with Logan (I bet he won’t remember this) long ago when I had met the original Bass player of Five Finger Death Punch. I was 18 or 19 then. I loved Roadrunner’s ‘All Star Sessions’ CD/DVD and in it saw Logan behind a mixing board and looked up his credentials and was shocked. I was then determined to work with him. John reached out to him to get involved with Nocturnal after we started recording and the rest is history.”

“I knew they John and Logan had worked on stuff together in the past, but I had no idea how great this team would be. Getting them both in a room with me is the perfect checks and balances of production and songwriting. We can almost read each other’s minds at some points.”

• Your tour with Fozzy starts later this week and its your first time being on the road since Covid performing. What are you most looking forward to about being on tour?

SHANE: “Everything. The road. The new friends I’ll make. The quick trip hot dogs. Haha, I’m made to travel. I’m made to perform. This is a dream come true.”

• If you had to choose one band from the past to tour with, who would it be & why?

SHANE: “Prince. I’m a workhorse when it comes to music. I write and record demos every day. Even if it’s just a riff or a chorus or a vocal melody. I know he did the same. I’d love to have learned the tips and tricks of his recording and performing process.”

Hard rockers UNCURED today (March 18) have released the heavy-hitting anthem “Set The World Ablaze.” It’s taken from their third full-length album LIVING LIKE I’M DEAD and available for streaming today across all digital platforms. “Set The World Ablaze” was written on the road during the band’s previous South American tour with Lacuna Coil and influenced by fan reaction as they played it from the stage each night. Co-vocalist/guitarists and brothers Rex and Zak Cox share the story below.

“We wrote ‘Set the World Ablaze’ while touring South America as direct support to Lacuna Coil in early 2019,” shares Zak. “It is a story of how perseverance leads to success, particularly for touring musicians. We performed it live several times before recording, leading to the ‘sway’ section which captures the reaction of Brazilian fans when they heard it from the stage.” Rex adds, “It’s an entirely organic composition, reflecting real-time changes that came from writing and playing it simultaneously in front of an international audience.”

UNCURED will wrap up their headlining “Living Like I’m Dead” U.S. tour this Sunday, March 20 in Greensboro, NC. UNCURED were formed in New Jersey in 2017 by brothers Rex and Zak Cox out of a mutual love for guitars and heavy music. They have since performed over 200 shows in 14 countries with top acts such as Judas Priest, Sabaton, All That Remains, Lacuna Coil, Cradle of Filth, Soulfly, Children of Bodom, DevilDriver, Whitechapel, Dying Fetus, Katatonia and Jamey Jasta.

UNCURED’s debut album MEDUSA (2017) was named as one of AXS’ “10 Best Metal Albums of 2017.” The band released a second album in 2019, EPIDEMIC, which MetalSucks lauded for its “signature groovy riffs and hook-fuel solos” and Guitar World praised as “technically dazzling.” The band also shared a cover of Slayer’s 2001 classic hit “Disciple” which was named 2019’s ‘Cover of The Year’ by Sirius XM Liquid Metal. This was followed by their 2020 EP, UNCOVERED, which included cover songs by Pantera, Sepultura, The Beastie Boys and America.

Tempe, AZ trio THE BLACK MOODS are a “true to form ‘rock band’ in its most 70’s refined essence” whose “contagious choruses, biting riffs, and hydraulic drumming creates an aura of unrestrained blues-based rock” (Glide Magazine). Consisting of guitarist/vocalist Josh Kennedy, drummer Chico Diaz and bassist Jordan Hoffman, the band have invited listeners to join them for a rowdy night out on the town in the music video for their rousing anthemic single, “Saturday Night,” in advance of its digital release this Friday, March 17. “Saturday Night” is featured on their upcoming third album, INTO THE NIGHT, due out June 3 via Wit Hustle/The Orchard/Steelhorse Entertainment and follows their previously released ballad “She Gets Out.”

The video was directed by Jim Louvau (Jerry Cantrell, Killer Be Killed) and one can watch the turn of events transpire in the below stream or via YouTube HERE.

“‘Saturday Night’ came out of one of our late-night jams,” tells Kennedy. “The groove had such a push to it, it felt like a Saturday night to us. Once we got in the studio with Johnny K. everything really fell into place and came together lyrically. Everyone usually looks forward to Saturday night, don’t they?”

Nashville-based Southern rock/outlaw artist J.D. HUGGINS has shared a stirring new single, “Head Full Of Monsters,” from his debut album due June 17 via Struggle Jennings’ Angels & Outlaws record label. The single gives an intimate look into J.D.’s life including his battle with past vices, the hardship of the loss of his first-born son and his unceasing fight to overcome negativity. Labelmate Caitlynne Curtis lends striking vocals on the track and can be seen alongside J.D. in the impactful music video which premiered via YouTube yesterday, March 10. Watch the “Head Full Of Monsters” video below or find it streaming across all platforms here: https://onerpm.link/monstersjd

“The song is just one of those really personal, ‘heart on your sleeve’ type of songs,” says JD. “I wrote it about some really personal experiences, like overcoming depression, anxiety, and being an extreme alcoholic for years to getting sober because I had my first child on the way to later losing my first-born son. These are just a portion of the experiences I wrote about in this song. I eventually came to the realization that if I expect people to really support and get behind what I’m singing about, I had to be vulnerable and put this song out.  It’s real and people want to hear real.”

J.D. combines Southern blues and dirty alternative rock to create a unique sound that defines and embodies his life.  He was raised in the Appalachian Mountains in a small town in Georgia where he spent his time fishing, hunting, camping and teaching himself how to play the guitar. Born into a musical family, J.D. began songwriting at an early age taking influence from his surroundings. He moved to Nashville to front the southern rock band Heathen Sons who continued to release two full-length albums and an EP and received notoriety for their single “Temporary Queen” which was featured on the hit ABC show “Blood & Oil.” Before disbanding in 2019, the band was seen performing with acts including Nikki Lane, Jericho Woods, Whiskey Myers, Will Hoge, Leah Blevins and Goodbye June, as well as appearing at Whiskey Jam and SXSW.

Nashville Singer-Songwriter MACKENZIE GRANT Debuts “All Of This” Lyric Video

DT: MARCH 10, 2022

FM: KELLY WALSH, MITCH SCHNEIDER/ SRO PR

MACKENZIE GRANT
DEBUTS LYRIC VIDEO FOR FOURTH SINGLE
“ALL OF THIS”
TAKEN FROM HER SOPHOMORE ALBUM
‘WONDER WORLD’

DUE MARCH 18
VIA BLACKBIRD RECORD LABEL
PRE-SAVE “ALL OF THIS HERE

Nashville-based singer, songwriter and musician MacKenzie Grant has shared a fourth track, “All of This,” from her from her upcoming March 18 album WONDER WORLD via Blackbird Record Label. The song “offers a message of authenticity and self-acceptance,” describes Cowgirl Magazine who premiered its lyric video yesterday, March 9. Watch the lyric video streaming below and pre-save “All Of This, which will be available digitally Friday, March 11,” HERE.

“This song is about owning your stuff and accepting where you may have fallen short with others and yourself,” divulges MacKenzie. “Becoming comfortable with the darker, less flattering aspects of myself helped me to cope with and have patience and compassion for the darkness we have been facing globally in terms of racial, economic, political, and environmental events. I think taking responsibility for our own mistakes or personal areas of deficit is the first step in building the empathy we need to create a more just, equitable, and compassionate world. If we can embrace the dark and the light in ourselves, maybe we can collectively face the darker places in our society with more empathy and hope. In order to grow and change, we can’t just own the wins, we have to own all of it.”

WONDER WORLD marks MacKenzie’s return to music after a 15-year hiatus during which time she worked as a school counselor in a high-poverty and high-trauma preschool. Her experiences during this time influenced her writing for the album, covering deeply personal themes such as self-reckoning, feminine empowerment and overcoming negative mindsets. A further sense of intimacy is heard across the album as she utilizes her classically trained musical background to provide keys and organ in addition to her compelling vocals. Additional accompaniment is provided by Josh Kaler on pedal steel guitar on various tracks.

MacKenzie has previously shared two original tracks–“Putting Down Some Things” premiered via Americana Highways and “Little Girl”—as well as a cover of Joni Mitchell’s timeless single “Borderline” which Americana UK praised stating, “Grant’s version of the song is beautiful; the exquisite melody is delivered in her clear, pure voice.” WONDER WORLD was further complimented by Music Connection, who reviewed the album in their March issue, for its “cache of touching and well-crafted tunes” while proclaiming that “the album is about truth telling and shedding personal conflict with hypnotic, compelling and dreamy sonic landscapes.”

Hard rock outfit UNCURED have shared a musically diverse new track today (March 4), “We Are The Antidote.” Taken from their forthcoming third full-length album LIVING LIKE I’M DEAD due March 18, the single moves seamlessly from trippy synths to hard rock grooves to metal breakdowns and can be heard streaming on Spotify HERE.

“‘We Are the Antidote’ is a song about emotional release and self-empowerment,” says vocalist/guitarist Rex Cox while, his brother Zak, who also shares vocal/guitar duties, chimes in stating, “the song was written in the depths of the 2020/21 COVID pandemic. It is a story of personal loneliness. Music and the connections that musicians make with their fans can be the ‘antidote’ to feelings of separation.”

UNCURED are currently out on a headlining U.S. tour in support of the new album with support from Wisconsin rockers Versus Me and NYC-based rock singer-songwriter Madame Mayhem. The tour kicked off in late February and wraps March 20 at Blind Tiger in Greensboro, NC. Tickets are available at www.uncuredband.com and full dates can be found below. Previously the band has performed over 200 shows in 14 countries and has appeared alongside acts including Judas Priest, Sabaton, All That Remains, Lacuna Coil, Cradle of Filth, Soulfly, Children of Bodom, DevilDriver, Whitechapel, Dying Fetus, Katatonia and Jamey Jasta.

Based out of New Jersey, UNCURED released their debut full-length album in March 2017, MEDUSA, which was heralded as one of the “10 Best Metal Albums of 2017” via AXS. It was followed by 2019’s EPIDEMIC—which MetalSucks praised for its “signature groovy riffs and hook-fueled solos” and Guitar World exalted as “technically dazzling.” During this time, the band also shared a cover of Slayer’s “Disciple” which garnered them the title of “2019 Cover of The Year” from Sirius XM Liquid Metal. With live events at a halt due to the 2020 global pandemic, UNCURED released a series of cover songs including those by Pantera, Sepultura, Beastie Boys and America on their 2020 EP, UNCOVERED.
