Coming off their most recent single/video “Last Drop,” VELVET CHAINS are sharing more new music from their second as-yet-untitled full-length album (due in October) with the hard-hitting track “Back On The Train,” out digitally August 12. The Las Vegas hard rock outfit collaborated with award-winning director Dean Karr (Ozzy Osbourne, Velvet Revolver) for the song’s hauntingly twisted music video and acclaimed artist Tim LeNoir (Guns N’ Roses, Rolling Stones) for the cover artwork (seen above). The video premiered yesterday (August 10) via MXDWN who described the song as being “armed with thunderous riffs, melodious guitars…[and] booming vocals.”

“Back on The Train” is sonically inspired by one of the band’s primary influences, Velvet Revolver, and lyrically explores romantic desire, seduction and obsession. The track’s

heavy riffs, melodic guitars, soaring vocals and driving rhythms were captured at Monster Sound and Picture in Vegas with producers Darren Trentacoste and James Boldt and sent for mixing and mastering by Tristan Hardin (The Hideout Studio). It was written by Goldschmidt and the band’s drummer Jason Hope along with multi-platinum songwriter Drew Lawrence (Lindsey Stirling, Christina Perri).

With a refreshed lineup consisting of Nils Goldschmidt (bass), Brazilian brothers Laurent (lead guitar) and Larry (rhythm guitar) Cassiano, drummer Jason Hope and Chilean-bred lead singer Ro Viper, VELVET CHAINS will bring their new music to audiences at Blue Ridge Rock Fest (Alton, VA) on September 1. They also performed this past July at Rock Fest (Caddott, WI) and opened in June for Todd Kerns (Slash Feat. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, The Age of Electric) at Count’s Vamp’d in Vegas. Look for VELVET CHAINS to support Kerns again at Count’s Vamp’d on Friday, September 16 and catch them in Vegas weekly on Monday’s beginning on August 29 at The Barbershop speakeasy at The Cosmopolitan.

Q&A on “BACK ON THE TRAIN” with NILS GOLDSCHMIDT

Having worked with Dean Karr on your previous album for the single ‘Tattooed” can you share what factors drew you to return to him for the new album and why specifically you chose to have him do a video for “Back On The Train”?

“Dean is not only a legend in the industry but also a music video visionary. He always knows what’s best for the specific song he’s working on and is always able to get the best out of each band he works with. We gave him a few options of songs, and naturally Dean being a true rock n’ roll fan, he went with the fastest, most energetic, authentic rock song we had at the time. We’re happy that he chose this song because it has a Velvet Revolver hard rock style to it, a band Dean has worked with several times, hence this was right up his alley. The resulting video was just insane.”

Where was the video filmed at and how did you use the locations to add into the dark theme of “Back On The Train”?

“We filmed the video at a creepy house located in the outskirts of LA. It seemed like it was a relatively new location and the only other band that had filmed a music video there the week prior was Paramore. Each room in the house had its own tone of creepiness to it, which worked wonders for the video.”

Can you talk us through the writing process for “Back On The Train”? What inspired the lyrics?

“Initially I, founder/bassist, and multi-platinum songwriter Drew Lawrence (Christina Perry, Lindsey Stirling) got together and came up with the main riffs, chorus, etc. for the song and put together a demo with just mumbled words. Our drummer Jason Hope wrote the lyrics to the song. His inspiration for lyrics came from relationship dynamics and when people have moved on to being single, and once again ‘back on the train’ looking for new potential love (or lust) interests.”

“Back On The Train” has a tense and fast-paced rhythm that brings to mind Velvet Revolver. Can you tell us about that?

“Velvet Revolver is one of our biggest influences and while we never set out to write a song that sounds like a band that we love, it’s inevitable that every now and then you’ll be able to hear some of them in our music. We love the fast pace, in your face, hard rock that Velvet Revolver represents, and we’re proud that ‘Back On The Train’ fits that bill.”

Nashville-based singer-songwriter and musician J.D. HUGGINS showcases his vibrant combination of Southern blues and dirty alternative rock on the single “Life I Lead” taken from his debut solo album HEAD FULL OF MONSTERS released in July via Struggle Jennings’ Angels & Outlaws record label. Today, August 3, J.D. has revealed a music video for the track which was recorded in Ashland City, TN with director Alisa Daglio (Body Count, Yelawolf). “I really wanted to do a music video with a story line and have family and friends play the roles,” shares J.D. “I always thought that would be fun and also rewarding for them to experience how it worked and get the opportunity to be involved. In the ‘Life I Lead’ music video I was able to have my niece, Jaylee Grace, and my son, Owen in it. I also had my brother in-law and some dear friends come be a part of it.”

He further went on to share background on the video’s location and concept stating: “We shot this music video on an old property out in Ashland City, TN. The property had the same vibe as my upbringing in the Appalachians mountains, making it the perfect spot to shoot a song about that region. The details of the video aren’t a reflection of my childhood but more or less a dark twist on how it can be back in the mountains. I have always loved dark story lines and unexpected twists in music videos and movies, so this seemed like a perfect song to accomplish that.”

HUGGINS was raised in the Appalachian Mountains in a small town in Georgia where he spent his time fishing, hunting, camping and teaching himself how to play the guitar. Born into a musical family, he began songwriting at an early age taking influence from his surroundings. He then moved to Nashville to front the southern rock band Heathen Sons who released two full-length albums and an EP and received notoriety for their single “Temporary Queen” which was featured on the hit ABC television show “Blood & Oil.” Before disbanding in 2019, the band was on the road performing with acts including Whiskey Myers, Turnpike Troubadours, The Cadillac Three, Nikki Lane, Will Hoge, Leah Blevins and Goodbye June as well as appearing at Whiskey Jam and SXSW.

“Writing a new theme song for a horror flick was inspiring,” says Sixx. “This was my first time writing for a horror-thriller film, and it took me in a different direction from the first theme song I wrote – ‘The Dirt (1981)’ by Mötley Crüe. I worked with some great new artists to create a new sound that will stretch Mötley Crüe’s audience to new fans. I had a great time writing it, and I think our fans will love it too!”

What started as a meme created by Modern Day Escape bassist and songwriter William Wenz about hosting a festival in a Denny’s parking lot turned to reality as he created the WHEN WE WERE HUNGRY FESTIVAL alongside co-founder/director and artist manager Mal Levy.

The inaugural event will take place in Las Vegas, NV on Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21 at the 3,000-capacity venue Rockstar Bar – Concert On The Green. The festival will highlight independent-focused acts that represent a who’s-who of the past and present rock, metal, punk and emo scene. The 2022 lineup will include headlining performances from punk rock icons Black Flag, legendary NY hardcore group Madball, emo rockers Secondhand Serenade and pop punk band Every Avenue plus more than 50 bands across two outdoor stages and one indoor stage over both days. Following each day of the festival, there will be an official afterparty indoors in collaboration with Come As You Are Events with guest DJ sets and surprise performances from musicians including Social Order, Chris Donothon (The Medic Droid), Alesana and Michael Vampire (Vampires Everywhere). Three-time Grammy-nominated rock outfit NOTHING MORE have released an extended version of their current Top 10 Billboard Active Rock charting hit single “TIRED OF WINNING” (#8) due to popular demand. The extended version “TIRED OF WINNING / SHIPS IN THE NIGHT” is out today, July 29, across digital platforms HERE. The extended track is taken from their upcoming album SPIRITS due October 14 via Better Noise Music and was first revealed in the group’s sci-fi oriented music video (seen here) released in April. It garnered immediate attention from fans requesting the extended version also be released digitally. “TIRED OF WINNING / SHIPS IN THE NIGHT” will also be featured on the official soundtrack for the upcoming Better Noise Films horror-thriller movie THE RETALIATORS in cinemas worldwide on September 14. THE RETALIATORS OFFICIAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK will be released via Better Noise Music on September 16 and includes tracks from labelmates including Motley Crue, Tommy Lee, Papa Roach, Five Finger Death Punch and more.

NOTHING MORE are also excited to share they have partnered with Z2 Comics (The Doors, Machine Gun Kelly, The Grateful Dead) to release their first-ever graphic novel “SPIRITS VOL.1” authored by Dan Watters (Cowboy Bebop, Arkham City: The Order of The World) and illustrated by Christian Rosado. The graphic novel will be released in Spring 2023 and be available in a standard edition hardcover, a deluxe edition oversized hardcover, a limited deluxe edition oversized hardcover hand-signed by band (999 copies total) and a special tour-only softcover only available for purchase in-person at NOTHING MORE shows or directly via their website.

The band recently unveiled their own meta-personality test, “SPIRITS TEST,” developed by frontman JONNY HAWKINS, which features 25 psychometric questions then determines your “SPIRIT TYPE.” Each SPIRIT TYPE has its own character and personality descriptions which are further explored in the upcoming graphic novel. Deluxe edition bundles for “SPIRITS VOL. 1” will highlight the SPIRIT TYPES with bundles including SPIRITS art prints, cards, an Eight-Sided Nothing More Spirits Octahedron, SPIRITS enamel pin, an exclusive color variant SPIRITS vinyl and more.

HAWKINS explains more on the “SPIRITS TEST” and “SPIRIT TYPES”:
“The comic book focuses on four of the Spirit Types. As we were making the album, I came up with the concept for the Spirits Test. Imagine if the zodiac had a baby with the Meyers Briggs personality test, and that baby came out with a fascination with cryptic iconography and metal music… that is this test. Each of us has a Spirit Type and this comic book is an artistic expression of how those Spirit Types come to life in a world very much like our own.

Guitarist MARK VOLLELUNGA shares how the idea for a graphic novel developed:
“I set forth on this collaboration with Z2 comics, and our manager, Will Hoffman, with the idea to expand the NOTHING MORE world and allow the reader to dive deeper down the rabbit hole and elaborate on what these Spirit Types mean; where they came from and why they exist. He’s such a brilliant, captivating writer. Both of us shared inspiration from shows like The OA and Sense 8 and we wanted to accentuate the differences all people have when something in your life wrecks you… and that even though these differences may seem polarizing, we all still need each other. It’s because of these differences that you learn to survive and grow. This story shows that great strength and mutual respect come to those who learn how to embrace one another despite such differences.”

Sacramento-based Irish alternative rockers ONOFF deliver an assertive yet comedic take on the current power struggle between the general public and corrupt governments with their new single, “Blah Blah Blah,” taken from their upcoming album due in early 2023. Scheduled for release digitally this Friday, July 22, the band have debuted its parody-driven music video today (July 21) as seen streaming below or directly on YouTube HERE. ONOFF will celebrate the release this Friday with a headlining, all-ages show at Goldfield Trading Post in Roseville, CA where attendees will be able to hear them perform “Blah Blah Blah” live among other previous singles, and the band will give away a signed Gretsch guitar, signed drumheads and more. Formed in the early 2000’s in Ireland, the three-piece—PAULIE, drummer/backing vocalist STEVIE 10 BEARS and bassist/backing vocalist DAVE—extensively toured across Europe before relocating to Sacramento, CA in 2013. ONOFF have built a dedicated fanbase from performing over 800 gigs including sold-out headlining shows some of the most well-known West Coast venues such as the Whisky A-Go-Go in Los Angeles and both Bottom of The Hill and The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. ONOFF’s 2017 album REBORN marked their first U.S. release and its single “Don’t Look Surprised” was voted the fifth most requested song of 2017 on KRXQ 98 Rock (Sacramento). In advance of the July 22 release of their debut album WOOLY MAMAS, Lancaster, PA-based eclectic rock outfit DIMESTORE DOLLS have today (July 20) shared an imaginative music video for the album’s second single, “Down To Mechanics,” an infectious vocal harmony-drenched mix of rock, pop and alternative. The clip “gives viewers an animated look at the yearning for love, looking for that one true match and the inevitable heartbreak that comes with being in love with something that isn’t real or genuinely there,” shares MXDWN in their premiere yesterday of the video (July 19). It was animated by the Los Angeles animation production and motion design studio Zookeeper (NBC’s “The Good Place,” “The Wall”). Watch it streaming below or HERE.

In 2008, DIMESTORE DOLLS founding member, singer-songwriter-musician KELLY BUCHANAN was preparing to release a new solo album following a build-up of success with previous releases whose music received airplay on various TV shows on MTV, The CW and A&E and saw her on a national tour with Mike Doughty. And then tragedy struck–during an impromptu game of street hockey she was hit in the head and suffered a traumatic brain injury. It was so severe that she had to re-learn how to walk, had difficulty with speech and required her to rebuild all of her other skills such as singing and playing music.

“Down to Mechanics” was one of the first songs she wrote post-brain injury. “It was in 2012, about the time I was learning to sing again and also trying my fingers on both the guitar and the piano,” recalls BUCHANAN. “I recorded it on an m-box with a bunch of vocal harmonies and a minimal acoustic guitar line. I was able to sing in head-voice first, and I didn’t have much control of my voice–so that demo was recorded as a wobbly mostly vocal piece.”

Adding to the song’s personal flair, its lyrical inspiration was drawn from the thoughts BUCHANAN had while being bed-ridden during her recovery. “When you are bed-ridden, you have plenty of time to rehash and psycho-analyze every past relationship, romantic or otherwise. There is lots of time to just think and think and think some more about victories and about regrets too. From past relationships to the existence of God to the reality of mortality, including the loss of my father, to what I would do with my life if I ever was lucky enough to go at it full throttle again. ‘Down to Mechanics’ was born of these thoughts.”

DIMESTORE DOLLS originated as an all-female lineup for a performance at a holiday party. The band expanded to include both male and female members and the album’s title, WOOLY MAMAS, was inspired by the fact they all wore holiday-themed sweaters for their first performance. The group shared its first single, “You Are The Fix,” which was co-written by the late Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne and also features the band’s surviving members. Equal parts self-starting entrepreneur and versatile songsmith, HODGES is a native Texan who moved to Los Angeles after responding to a Craigslist ad looking for a talented session vocalist for film and TV. There he developed his skill set as a topline specialist, vocal performer and composer, working behind the scenes with Paramount Pictures, Sony, Nickelodeon and Riptide Music Group, among others. Inspired by Boyz II Men, Michael Jackson, and Ace Of Base as a young child informed his pop sensibilities while his teenage discovery of alt-rock icons like Stone Temple Pilots and Jane’s Addiction introduced the mixture of heaviness and emotionalism that’s also become central to the music he makes today.

BLACK HOLE MAGIC showcases his fearless artistry and unique vision across 13 tracks of unashamed, unapologetic, spirited music. “Recent years have liberated people. There are no more rules, dogmas, or preconceived notions about genres,” HODGES says. “Let’s listen to whatever the hell we want to listen to if it makes us feel good.”
