“That my best friend, she a real bad b*tch”

Leading femme fatales CARLA HARVEY and HEIDI SHEPHERD of the Los Angeles-based heavy metal group BUTCHER BABIES celebrate their decade-plus friendship by putting their own heavy metal spin on the hit single “Best Friend,” originally performed by rapper/singers Saweetie and Doja Cat. Alongside its release across digital streaming platforms today, Friday, October 28, BUTCHER BABIES have shared a music video which shows the duo engaging in various activities including donning black metal face paint and partying at a strip club. Watch it streaming below or via the band’s YouTube HERE.

“During the last 15 as Butcher Babies, we have proved that a strong friendship can and will withstand all,” states SHEPHERD. “When I first heard this song by Saweetie & Doja Cat, I knew that we needed to be the ones to bring this into the metal world. With our un-breakable bond, Carla and I just grow stronger each time we play this to a live audience. It’s a true anthem of female power, screaming, ‘we are stronger together.’ I am truly honored to scream this song along my best friend.”

“Nearly fifteen years ago Heidi and I started Butcher Babies as best friends,” says HARVEY. “In a world where women are often pitted against each other, we instead chose to celebrate each other and grow together. The song ‘Best Friend’ is the perfect anthem to describe our relationship; as soon as we heard the Saweetie and Doja Cat original, we knew we were the only band that could cover it…it was written for us!”

Guitarist HENRY FLURY adds: “It was difficult to figure out how to approach covering this song. So, I told Heidi to get on the mic and just go for it. When I heard how ferocious it was, the riff just came to me. We had the song done in about 10 minutes.”

BUTCHER BABIES are currently on the last leg of their European tour supporting Swedish metal outfit Amaranthe alongside Germany’s Beyond The Black which ends in Stockholm, SE on November 12.

With three albums and two EPs under their belt, including their latest full length 2017 release LILITH which debuted at #1 on iTunes Metal charts and #7 on iTunes Rock charts, BUTCHER BABIES juxtapose brutal, aggressive riffs with beautiful melodies that wail with emotional redemption. The group–vocalist HEIDI SHEPHERD and CARLA HARVEY, guitarist HENRY FLURY and drummer CHASE BRICKENDEN–are set to release their fourth album in 2023 which reflects their growth as a band over the past decade. “But there’s the rub isn’t it classic?
You really want to Save your soul For us
Isn’t it fantastic
You never wanna pay the toll
You only want to rock ‘n’ roll”

Los Angeles-based indie/alternative rock & roll group LOUDEN SWAIN will release their tenth studio album FEELINGS AND SUCH on November 11. The band, fronted by actor/musician ROB BENEDICT (“Supernatural,” “Lucifer,” “Felicity”), combine rock & roll swagger and melodic jangle with emotive, electrifying songs about pushing past challenges and turning one’s struggles into salvation. LOUDEN SWAIN have today shared the new single “There’s The Rub” with a charismatic, feel-good music video starring BENEDICT’s “Supernatural” co-star Kim Rhodes and directed by co-founder/bassist MICHAEL BORJA.

Premiered via PopMatters yesterday (10/26) who described the song as an “energized indie rock cut” with “infectious energy,” the band share the song’s meaning stating: “‘There’s The Rub’ is about the dance of addiction when you think your best days are behind you.” You can view the “There’s The Rub” music video at the bottom of the page or streaming on YouTube HERE.

Rounded out by drummer STEPHEN NORTON and guitarist BILLY MORAN, LOUDEN SWAIN will host a special, intimate record release show in North Hollywood this Saturday, October 29 where they’ll perform FEELINGS AND SUCH in its entirety along with fan-favorites from their previous discography. Tickets are on sale now HERE along with option for a VIP upgrade which includes a pre-show meet & greet, exclusive VIP lanyard and signed show poster.

LOUDEN SWAIN have additional shows lined up throughout 2023 in conjunction with Supernatural conventions across the country. During the three-day conventions, they perform throughout the day’s panels as the house band and on the second night perform a headlining show open to convention attendees and general public featuring original music and sometimes guest appearances from the convention’s guests. LOUDEN SWAIN were also recently added as the opening act for Radio Company (fronted by actor Jensen Ackles) at their first-ever show in Nashville on December 19. Full dates can be found below.

Co-produced by LOUDEN SWAIN and longtime collaborator Zackary Darling (The Temptations, John Waite), FEELINGS AND SUCH is an album rooted in trials and triumphs, whipped into shape by a band of rock & roll lifers who’ve had plenty of experience with both. BENEDICT had gone through a divorce, BORJA had recently lost his father, NORTON was battling colon cancer and everyone’s lives had been altered by the pandemic. Yet LOUDEN SWAIN continued to look on the bright side during those moments of darkness and doubt and recorded the finest record of their 25-year career.

Kansas City, MO singer, songwriter and guitarist IVORY BLUE Today Releases New Single And Video “Starlit Love Child” From Their Forthcoming 2023 Album

IVORY BLUE
TODAY (OCTOBER 26) RELEASES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO
“STARLIT LOVE CHILD” VIA DARK SPARK MUSIC
KANSAS CITY, MO SINGER, SONGWRITER AND GUITARIST’S
NEW TRACK IS FROM THEIR FORTHCOMING 2023 ALBUM

IVORY BLUE today (Oct 26) excitingly come forward with their new single and video “Starlit Love Child” via Dark Spark Music (owned and operated by veteran rock manager Vicky Hamilton). Written by the Kansas City, MO singer, songwriter and guitarist, the song is a passionate fusion of full-bodied rock and alluring pop hooks, with a potent and socially relevant chorus about personal freedom: “This is your choice/Be alive be a warrior/This is your voice/Be defined be a noisemaker.” Watch the video here.

The multi-instrumentalist confessed vagabond’s “Starlit Love Child” will officially be released this Friday, October 28 to all streaming platforms and will appear on their upcoming album out in 2023 (exact release date, TBA). The video, directed Ridge Beck of Ridge Films, was premiered yesterday (Oct 25) by Vents Magazine.

Says IVORY BLUE: “I just want people to leave the video with an understanding of the forces that govern our lives. I wanted the idea to come across that the character uses magic and similar divining methods to find answers in their own personal way. The song has vibes that coincide with the Halloween season.” See a Q&A below with IVORY BLUE about the track and video.

The 1st place winner of Next2Rock 2017 (a nationwide talent search with over 1800 artists/bands who applied to find fresh and promising rock artists) and artist dedicated to breaking down barriers and defying staid conventions was inspired to write “Starlit Love Child” based on a friend’s use of ubiquitous divining methods such as Ouija boards, crystal balls, tarot cards and the persistence to find answers for things gone wrong while using any means necessary to discover new truths that are out in this world to better their life.

IVORY BLUE started writing music at a very young age, creating their unique alt-rock sound, using a tape recorder to superimpose sounds that added to a song production. After starting performances in coffee shops and small venues, they immediately captured the hearts of young and old with ingeniously composed songs and powerful lyrics and began refining their performance style, using digital looping pedals to stack harmonies and guitar parts live on stage, giving their solo shows the feel of a full band. In 2011, IVORY BLUE settled in Kansas City, MO and quickly began attracting an intense regional following for their strong vocals and incisive, deeply personal lyrics. On July 29th, 2022, and after studying the craft of recording and self- producing, this amazing singer-songwriter with a passionate love for everyone struggling through life released their first full length album Compound Love following with their single “Red Light” and now “Starlit Love Child.”

Q&A with IVORY BLUE ABOUT
“STARLIT LOVE CHILD”

Congratulations on “Starlit Love Child.” Musically, it comes on so strong with its signature riff–the same way classic rock songs like Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” and T. Rex’s “20th Century Boy” hit hard. And then there’s the super melodic modern pop feel. Can you talk about the song–its sound, the arrangement, and the experience of recording it?

IVORY BLUE: The song is a walk through life. It’s about all the experiences we face along the way while asking the ultimate question, “what does all of this really mean?” I wanted an anthem of sorts where the person in the song is looking for those answers while also going through the typical “walks of life.”

The arrangement is just straight rock guitars with a pop vibe and melodic vocal. I wanted synthesizers in it as well to cut through the “noise” of all the distortion but ended up distorting the synth as well. It just sounded good in my opinion and gave it that edge I was looking for.

The general idea formed pretty quickly. I just had a melody and sang it in Cubase and the rest kind of came together pretty naturally. It didn’t take any time at all to create the whole vibe of the song and find its hook. It took a few days to record the final parts but that’s because I always block out my vocals for one day and guitar for another day.

I always write out the drums with samples and midi to get the idea across that I want for the song. I emailed Lester Estelle (drummer for Kelly Clarkson) and he puts his spin on it and makes it so much better. He does this from his own studio and I always love what he comes up with.

I then have a bassist (Craig Kew) come in and play the bass part that I write for the demo with my Explorer bass. He makes the part better and uses his fingers, while I generally use a pick. It gives the part a real feel and is perfect for the song. I love working with him too.

The song has many standout lyrics, particularly these: “This is your choice/Be alive be a warrior/This is your voice/Be defined be a noisemaker.” It sounds like you’re singing about your own life and also offering a message of positive resistance and hope for others who feel like outcasts. What was your mindset when you wrote it? And what was it like to step into the vocal booth and deliver your performance?

IVORY BLUE: The song is an anthem of sorts. I wanted to show someone going through life. I used ideas that make someone a good person such as standing up for what you believe in and being loud and outspoken about your passions. The vibe of the song is to take those ideas and then have the person in the song look for answers (in this case using divining methods) and find the answer they are searching for in whatever way they can.

In the studio I really just wanted to channel the passion I had for music and use it to make this song’s performance the best it could be. I just heard the lyrics in my head and delivered them the best I could.

How do you think living in Kansas City, MO affects your outlook on the world?

IVORY BLUE: Being in KC has been a turning point for my life. I started in Washington, Indiana where there is no music scene, or at least there wasn’t when I was there over ten years ago. I played a small coffee shop on Main Street.

Since moving to KC I’ve experienced lots of things. One of them being that there is a possibility that my music can reach more people. Also, I see the possibility of growing as an artist ’cause my team and I are always pushing me to be better, to climb to the highest level I can.

With that said I feel that being in a much bigger city would reach my audience in a more organic way. Hopefully I can achieve that goal.

What is the general theme for the video?  What would you like people to take away from it?

IVORY BLUE: I just want people to leave the video with an understanding of the forces that govern our lives. I wanted the idea to come across that the character uses magic and similar divining methods to find answers in their own personal way.

The song has vibes that coincide with the Halloween season so we felt outside shots of me in dark clothing would work best with it. The pieces that have me in them, my manager Klaartje Van Lue took on her property around her home. We live out in the country and have some wooded areas that really bring the right vibe to the video clips.  Everything that we didn’t film, Ridge Beck (the video director) added..

Do you have an album planned for 2023 and might there be live shows to support it?

IVORY BLUE: Yes, there will be an album for 2023 with a tour following the release of it.

Live shows will always happen. I love the energy of a live audience and feel so good when I play in front of a live crowd. I’m always looking to try new things as well so be on the lookout for unique things in the future of IVORY BLUE.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18 IN LEXINGTON, MA

JOHN LODGE, legendary bass player, songwriter and vocalist of The Moody Blues and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, will bring his new show “Performs Days of Future Passed” to America. JOHN, together with his 10,000 Light Years Band, will perform The Moody Blues’ iconic Days of Future Passed album in its entirety, with a special recording by the late Graeme Edge and performances by Jon Davison of YES. The show will also feature a set of the pioneering classic hits “Ride My See-Saw,” “I’m Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band),” “Isn’t Life Strange,” “Legend of a Mind” and “Nights in White Satin” in what promises to be a truly spectacular evening. Below are the tour dates and JOHN’s quotes about the show. For tickets, VIP packages –which include a great seat, a personalized video message from John and exclusive merchandise, and more–please visit: https://johnlodge.com/tour.

On November 10, 2022, Days of Future Passed will celebrate its 55th Anniversary, and JOHN wanted to do something special to celebrate the album. The Moodies had embarked on a US tour in 2017 to celebrate the 50th, but regrettably stopped touring shortly after, and then, very sadly, Graeme Edge passed away in 2021. However, shortly before his passing, John and Graeme met and spent some special time together, and at that meeting Graeme told John how he hoped John would continue on with the music and keep the Moody Blues’ music alive.

JOHN returned home and realised that what he really wanted to do was revisit this iconic album, honor his lost friends Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge, and his other bandmates Justin Hayward and Mike Pinder, but also reimagine it for today.  How would he do it differently? Graeme had already recorded a special version of “Late Lament” for John, and John’s great friend (and future son-in-law) Jon Davison (of YES) had recorded “Nights in White Satin” for him, and so the stage was set; John went into the studio and began work with his Musical Director, Alan Hewitt, on both a new show and a new album, details of which are TBA.

The new show, based around the simple tale of “a day in the life of an everyday man,” will highlight all that made Days of Future Passed the ground-breaking album that it was–arguably the start of Progressive Rock.  It retains the core emotion of the original album and recreates its incredible orchestration, but at the same time it also brings in a modern feel thanks to the great strides in modern fidelity, and the maturity that comes with the passing of the years.  Listen to “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Peak Hour,” and more fill the room, and you’ll be taken back to 1967, but at the same time, you’ll hear what John has brought to this new version in his vocals, bass and harmonies, and how he sees the album 55 years later. In its own way, it can also be said to be a reflection of John’s own life.

The electrifying show will also feature a selection of JOHN’s classic self-written hits, including the above-mentioned “Ride My See-Saw,” “Isn’t Life Strange,” and “I’m Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band).” The latter two were hit singles on the Moody Blues’ album Seventh Sojourn which spent 5 weeks at Number 1 on Billboard and is currently celebrating its 50th Anniversary.  Come and be taken back to the Moody Blues’ shows of the past, featuring JOHN LODGE, and including tributes to all his bandmates.

Joining JOHN on stage is his 10,000 Light Years Band, long term collaborator Alan Hewitt (Music Director and Keyboards) and Billy Ashbaugh (Drums) from the Moody Blues touring band, together with Duffy King (Guitars) and Jason Charboneau (Cello). Jon Davison of YES will also be joining them for his special renditions of “Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon” plus the magical voice of Graeme Edge will be heard via a special recording.

“November 2022 sees me looking back 55 years to that week in 1967,” says JOHN LODGE. “As I said at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Graeme, Mike, Ray, Justin, and I, together with Tony, went into a studio, and seven days later we came out with an album that changed our lives forever.” He adds: “I’m sorry that the Moodies are no longer touring, and I miss my friends Ray and Graeme deeply, but as I looked back to the past, I realised that I also wanted to look forwards to the Future. My hope is that in this show, and album, you will get to revisit 1967, but at the same time, see how this album has grown with me, and with you. Thank to you the 10,000 Light Years Band, Jon Davison and, of course, Graeme, for their belief in this project and helping bring my vision to life. And thank you to all the fans for Keeping the Faith.”

Details Revealed For OZZY OSBOURNE’S ‘Patient Number 9’ Album Theme Via Accompanying Todd McFarlane Comic Book

DATE: OCTOBER 20, 2022

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN/MITCH SCHNEIDER

DETAILS REVEALED FOR
OZZY OSBOURNE’S
‘PATIENT NUMBER 9’ ALBUM THEME
VIA ACCOMPANYING COMIC BOOK

To learn about what inspired the theme for OZZY OSBOURNE’s PATIENT NUMBER 9 album, look no further than the 26-page comic book available solely in some limited-edition album packages. Featuring a story by Todd McFarlane and illustrations by Jonathan Glapion (the beautiful haunting interior pages were painted by Glapion with a striking cover provided by McFarlane), the comic book was initially available only in record stores and online. The story tells how OSBOURNE is trapped in an asylum with no way out, he’s tortured by the doctors, abused by the patients, and hunted by a horrific creature born from his shattered mind. The comic book serves as the prequel to the McFarlane-directed video for the album’s first single and title track” Patient Number 9.” The Limited Edition CD + Comic Book bundle is now being sold at more than 600 comic book stores throughout North America (click here to find a local store).

Other highlights include #2 Austria, Germany and Sweden; #3 in Switzerland; and #4 in Norway.

Working with producer Andrew Watt for the second time, OZZY welcomed a dynamic A-list featured guests on the album. For the first time ever, Black Sabbath co-founder, guitarist, and riff-master Tony Iommi appears on an OZZY solo album. The record also boasts guitarists Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and longstanding righthand man and six-string beast Zakk Wylde who plays on the majority of the tracks. For the bulk of the album, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers held down drums, while the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters appears on three songs. Old friend and one-time OZZY band member Robert Trujillo of Metallica plays bass on most of the album’s tracks, with Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses and Chris Chaney supplying bass on a few songs.

STEREOGUM, 9/21/22

“… a solid new solo album, Patient Number 9, packed with cameos from some of the greatest guitarists in rock, like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mike McCready, Zakk Wylde, and his old Sabbath cohort Tony Iommi…Osbourne has a great record to promote.”
PASTE MAGAZINE, 9/19/22

Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer Ozzy Osbourne is still going strong.”
JAMBASE, 9/9/22

“There’s so much going on here. You’re getting reunions with old collaborators (Zakk Wylde, Robert Trujillo, and Tony Iommi), some new collaborators (Jeff Beck, Mike McCready, and more), it’s got Ozzy on harmonica for a song (at least?), and his strange sense of humor and darkness…it’s a solid Ozzy record. Andrew Watt knows really how to get Ozzy to be Ozzy.”
METAL INJECTION, 9/9/22

“Against all odds, Ozzy Osbourne’s 2020s output has been as strong if not stronger than the vast majority of his multi-decade discography. His 12th studio solo album, 2020’s Ordinary Man, sounded rejuvenated and inspired, with its moments of hard-hitting, Sabbath-echoing greatness… ‘Patient Number 9,’ arrives just two relatively short years after its predecessor and carries a similar crackle of reactivated excitement…Ozzy’s sound has always included a fine-tuned balance of powerhouse riffing and hooks derived from the more sinister reaches of pop, and that formula continues here… Patient Number 9 gets into more involved song structures and riskier production moves…Ozzy sounds hypercharged throughout Patient Number 9, continuing the unlikely late-in-the-game comeback he began on Ordinary Man, and besting that album by taking more chances.”
ALLMUSIC.COM, 9/9/22

“The jaw-dropping array of music legends who lent their services to this album make Patient Number 9 a very entertaining listen, one in which Osbourne sounds as resilient and vocally powerful as always — a powerful reminder that even at 73, he can still rock as hard as anyone out there. Give it a listen.”
ROCK CELLAR MAGAZINE, 9/9/22

“No one can question the resiliency of the Prince of Darkness. Despite ongoing health concerns and an understanding from the legendary rocker and fans alike that any day could be his last, Ozzy Osbourne presses on…The tracks on Patient Number 9 are well-written, well-arranged and well-performed—and right in line with what fans have come to expect from the heavy metal hero.”
RIFF MAGAZINE, 9/9/22 (8/10)

“Genuinely one of the strongest albums Ozzy has released in years, Patient Number 9 might be weighted somewhat more towards the slower, power ballad side of things but when it gets going, it rocks like a motherfucker. The vocals are strong and vibrant, and if that’s due in part to studio tinkering then who cares?  Ozzy earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants a long time ago, and most importantly, it sounds fucking great.”
GHOST CULT MAGAZINE, 9/9/22 (8/10)

“Patient Number 9, also filled with big names, proves the Black Sabbath frontman is still very much in the game…altogether, Patient Number 9 is a gallant effort, brimming with energy and spirit. It perfectly captures the singer’s unique and stirring vocals, leading the charge over a mostly heavy soundtrack full of heart and passion. Perhaps more than anything, it finds Ozzy Osbourne untarnished by the wear and tear of his age and rockstar lifestyle — and far, far away from the finish line.”
VINTAGEROCK.COM, 9/9/22

“The most important British person of all time besides Tony Iommi releases his latest album, Patient Number 9, with a slew of guest appearances. It’s his best record since 2007’s No More Tears, thanks in part to the strong choices in guest features.”
METALSUCKS, 9/9/22

“After all these years, Osbourne proves that he deserves not only the accolades but more so the adulation for his music. Patient Number 9 is another golden ring on his finger. The man may have been slowed down by his life’s challenges; but as an artist, his music is earthly eternal. All this said, Ozzy Osbourne is really alive and well, still rocking menacingly to his heart’s content. That is why Cryptic Rock gives Patient Number 9, 4 out of 5 stars.”

Prog-leaning alt/power-pop/new wave Boston-based trio ELSEWHERE to release their musically adventurous and evocative concept album ‘LIFE…IS A FRACTION’ on November 4

ELSEWHERE,
THE PROG-LEANING ALT/POWER-POP/NEW WAVE
BOSTON-BASED TRIO,
TO RELEASE THIRD ALBUM
‘LIFE…IS A FRACTION’
ON NOVEMBER 4

Prog-leaning alt/power-pop/new wave Boston-based trio ELSEWHERE–led by frontman and guitarist Michael Aroian and drummer Adam Soucy–will release their musically adventurous and evocative concept album LIFE…IS A FRACTION on November 4. This follows the release of the album’s two singles: Call You Out and The Pledge.” The track listing follows below.

For their third album, ELSEWHERE worked with producer and long-time collaborator David Minehan (Replacements, Aerosmith). LIFE…IS A FRACTION weaves together a fascinating, semi-autobiographical narrative about how our perception of time shifts as we grow older. Days, months, and years seem to speed up…until a frightening, life-changing diagnosis–and being forced to face mortality–changes everything once again. The record is based on the cancer diagnosis Aroian received several years ago which served as a defining point in his life.

“I became cognizant of relative time in my 30s,” Aroian says. “The idea behind LIFE…IS A FRACTION is that at any age, we have only lived a fraction of our lifespan. When you’re five, you’ve maybe lived 1/16th of say, 80 years. When we’re children, life events seem to take much longer because we’ve only lived a very small part of an average life. In this fraction, the numerator is the number of days you have lived, and the denominator the total number you will ultimately live. In the story we tell on the album, as in my own life, the protagonist’s denominator is potentially cut short by getting sick. It sped everything up, and he, like I, was suddenly able to see time move. The more days that go by, the faster time seems to go as we rapidly approach our denominator.”

As the protagonist wanders through life before being brutally confronted with his own mortality, he explores various options–face it, embrace it, defy it. Through it all, LIFE…IS A FRACTION teeters precariously on the edge of sanity. “When I was diagnosed with cancer, I experienced this first-hand,” says Aroian. “My denominator was reduced. I now literally live it every day. Time is indeed fleeting and the sooner we realize this, the sooner we can take control and live each day to the fullest. The tragedy is not that this is happening to us, but that we might not learn from it or do anything proactive or meaningful about it.”

LIFE…IS A FRACTION shows the band reaching a creative zenith (all in a hard-hitting 34 minutes); it’s an original rock epic that shakes the foundations not only of what everyone’s come to expect of the New England trio, but also of the lives of everyone who listens. Musically, it was influenced by front man Aroian’s lifelong passion for Rush and particularly their 1978 classic album Hemispheres, as well as the early Genesis catalogue. After the main 10-song cycle, the album ends with ELSEWHERE’s most recent singles from 2020-21, “Call You Out” and the aforementioned “The Pledge.”

The band previously released two albums and EPs and are best known for their single “Don’t You Believe Me Baby,” a dynamic cover of a previously unrecorded early 80’s Police song. That atypical release helped the band generate over half a million streams on Spotify and score a full-page story in the Boston Herald. It was followed by the “banthem” (ballad/anthem) “The Pledge,” which broke important ground by tackling the often-taboo subject of Alzheimer’s Disease; the song was mixed by Grammy-nominated producer Mark Needham (The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Pink, Elton John).

The LIFE…IS A FRACTION track listing is as follows:

  1. Life…is a Fraction I. Restless
  2. Life…is a Fraction II. Origin Story
  3. Life…is a Fraction III. In Search of the Unknown
  4. Life…is a Fraction IV. Rolling On
  5. Life…is a Fraction V. Diagnosis
  6. Life…is a Fraction VI. Realization
  7. Life…is a Fraction VII. Happening Now
  8. Life…is a Fraction VIII. Reflection
  9. Life…is a Fraction IX. Interlude/Transformation
  10. Life…is a Fraction X. Finale/The End of Everything
  11. Call You Out
  12. The Pledge

Q&A with Michael Aroian of ELSEWHERE

Q: Life…is a Fraction comes in at 34 minutes–was that where you ended up because you felt the story was told in that time?

Michael Aroian (MA): “Yes and no. Originally, the idea was only supposed to be told in 8-9 minutes and was going to be included as part of a B-side to an earlier EP we released in 2018 called “Multi-Man”. As the pandemic roared on and we became more introspective and experimental with our writing and recording, the sonic canvas expanded and time ironically stopped for awhile to allow us to broaden the story and give it proper attention and treatment. We didn’t intend to have 10 chapters at the outset but as the project progressed, it was evident more music was needed to complete the narrative.”

Q: Life…is a Fraction seems to have a universal appeal since through the pandemic time seemed to be broken into fractions, but also stood still. Noting time perception was different over the past few years, did this play into the story at all?

(MA): It did indirectly at first and then the idea of fractional time perception became more crystallized as our everyday lives were put on pause. One thought about why time seems to move by quicker as we get older relates to the notion of being more busy, be it with family or professional or other obligations. When we are younger, most of us don’t have as many responsibilities or complexities in our lives. This usually changes with time. However, even as I myself was tasked with less mundane things to worry about during that approximate two year pause, time still whipped by. And it was because my numerator of days lived on this earth was catching up with my fixed but unknown denominator of days that I had to live. No matter what, I have lived a greater relative percentage of my life than I did before the pandemic and as a result everything sped up despite me spending more time at home “doing nothing”…This observation to me became more chilling and underscored what we were trying to tell people with this story…

Q: Can you talk about how the band came up with and refined its merger of prog-leaning alt-rock?

(MA): The notion of us being a prog leaning alt/power-pop/new wave trio didn’t necessarily happen consciously as say a band like The Police purposefully (and with genius) marrying rock and reggae. It was more a function of evolution. All the members in the band love prog rock and were raised on it to some extent but for me, being a boy in the 80’s and becoming an adult in the 90’s, I also ended up being exposed to so many interesting genres within the rock realm be it from punk to new wave to grunge to brit pop to nu metal. A lot of these different influences permeate our writing and while some of the pursuits of prog rock can be fantastic, sometimes they can be lost in self-indulgence (which is also okay). I think what we were unconsciously trying to do was create a concept record that would be applicable to today’s music consuming environment. Things move faster and attention spans are shorter. The notion of the bridge in song arrangement has been abandoned or mutated. We thought we could convey a story with deep meaning in more bite sized chunks that perhaps younger people who are always on the move and looking at their phone could enjoy and understand. But stylistically and sonically our sound has arrived via a gradual confluence of many different musical influences.

About ELSEWHERE:

Describing themselves as a “prog leaning alt/power-pop new wave band,” Boston based power trio Elsewhere’s single “Don’t You Believe Me Baby”–a dynamic cover of a long overlooked, previously unrecorded early 80’s Police song–has scored hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, and streams on Spotify and landed the band a full page story in the Boston Herald. Their most recent EP Multi-Man includes three equally fiery originals penned by frontman and guitarist Michael Aroian. Elsewhere initially achieved notoriety for their now out of print album Outbound, which earned them slots at the College Music Journal (CMJ) Marathon and numerous showcases in NYC where major labels showed interest. The band later achieved an international breakthrough with their widely acclaimed 1981 album in 2010. In addition to Belgium, where they received a write-up in one of the country’s biggest rock magazines (Rock Tribune), they became popular and received great press in Germany, Denmark, Norway, UK, Italy, Czech Republic and other countries – all while continuing to hold court at top clubs in their home base of Boston and NYC.

YES Now On The Road In The U.S. Receiving Praise For Their 50th Anniversary Tour Of Iconic Album ‘Close To The Edge’

DATE: OCTOBER 19, 2022

YES
NOW ON THE ROAD IN THE U.S. RECEIVING PRAISE
FOR THEIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR
OF ICONIC ALBUM
‘CLOSE TO THE EDGE’

Prog rock pioneers and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees YES are receiving praise for the in-progress U.S. leg of their “The Album Series Tour 2022,” celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1972 iconic album, Close To The Edge. This marks the band’s first trek in the U.S. since 2019 and kicked off with two shows in Glenside, PA at the Keswick Theatre on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8. It will wrap in New York at the NYCB Theatre on November 19. See the remaining tour dates below.

“Yes kicks off 2022 U.S. tour with stunning performance of ‘Close to the Edge’…greeted so rapturously by the sold-out crowd that loved every minute of this glorious performance…As always with a Yes concert, the sound, lights and visuals were uniformly excellent. Yes always sounds great live, and this show was no exception. The lighting was well-done…The video screens showed beautiful imagery throughout, well-timed to the songs and featuring some Roger Dean images and animation along with other breathtaking photos and graphics that enhanced the emotion of the songs.”
GOLDMINE MAGAZINE, 10/11/22

“This is the first Yes tour with Schellen in the driver’s seat as the only drummer (he’s backed up White during the last few years), and the veteran musician was definitely up to the task…Opening with “On the Silent Wings Of Freedom” served as a solid nod to late bassist Chris Squire…’Yours is No Disgrace” was steady, jazzy at times, and ‘Wonderous Stories’ found Howe spinning out a “Seen All Good People” tease on his 12-string valachia.”
VINTAGE ROCK, 10/15/22

“’Close to the Edge’ was note perfect throughout. Howe was majestic in his riffing and finger picking, trading from electric to acoustic to even slide guitar for pieces. The title song hummed along in its progressive chord changes on a dime, shifting from heavy bass and guitar to Davison’s soaring “I Get Up, I Get Down” section that repeated throughout the 18-minute song. “And You and I” followed and that’s definitely a crowd pleaser. “Siberian Khatru” is more a straight-ahead rocker and the perfect song to bring the audience to its feet and close the second set. YES has had a long history. This version kept that legacy intact.”
PENNSYLVANNIA PATCH, 10/12/22

As with “The Album Series Tour 2022,” which started off in the UK this past June, the U.S. tour is dedicated to the late Alan White—the band’s legendary drummer—following his passing this past May (see the band quotes about Alan here).

Alan White joined YES in June 1972, just days before their “Close To The Edge” Tour began. Over the following 50 years, Alan would appear on every YES album including 2021’s The Quest. Following the global pandemic, he had been looking forward to this tour and re-joining his bandmates on stage, something he lived for, in the run up to his 50th anniversary of joining YES.

Sadly, that was not be, but Alan’s towering presence will be omnipresent on the tour. Alan’s good friend, drummer Jay Schellen, will join YES for the forthcoming tour, alongside Steve Howe (guitars & backing vocals), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (lead vocals) and Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals).

The “Close to the Edge” show comprise full production and a high-definition video wall directed by Andy Clark and featuring the artwork of Roger Dean.

Following the release of The Yes Album and Fragile in 1971, YES released what is widely considered one of the most defining albums, not only for YES but for the whole progressive movement. Close To The Edge became an inspiration for their contemporaries and for successive generations of musicians. The album is saluted with a cover story in the September 2022 issue of the national magazine Guitar Player, for which Steve Howe was interviewed. He recalls: “We were young, enthusiastic, and adventurous, and we had this incredible breakthrough success with Fragile. We saw our next album as a real opportunity to prove our worth as a band. The door had been opened and we weren’t going to go backward. We wanted to sharpen our skills as far as writing and arranging.”

About YES

Formed in 1968 by Jon Anderson and the late, and much-missed, Chris Squire, YES have been one of the most innovative, influential and best-loved bands in rock music history. Their 1970s albums The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Yessongs (a triple live album set), Tales From Topographic Oceans, Relayer and Going For The One were ground-breaking in musical style and content. Their music also became synonymous with artist Roger Dean whose distinctive YES logo design and artwork adorned the lavish gatefold presentation sleeves of many YES albums.

With sales of over 50 million records, the Grammy-award winning YES were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017 where they performed Roundabout from the album Fragile and the FM radio-friendly Owner Of A Lonely Heart from the 1985 album 90125. In 2021 YES released their 22nd Studio album, The Quest, produced by Steve Howe, which went to No.1 in the UK rock chart and entered the Official UK Album Chart at No.20.
