“A BRAND NEW DAY” MARKS THE SECOND SINGLE FROM
MALLOY’S UPCOMING ALBUM ‘MIRROR’ OUT APRIL 26

“A BRAND NEW DAY” SINGLE ART

DAVID MALLOY today (March 13) shares the second single and video “A Brand New Day,” from his upcoming debut album MIRROR out April 26 via Nashville-based indie label Creative People with distribution by CmfShft. Written by the legendary songwriter, it’s an uplifting song about second chances in life and delivers an upbeat vibe with a feel- good message of hope. “I love this track and it always puts a smile on my face—the way I want to wake up every morning” says Malloy. Listen to the song HERE and watch the beautifully surreal video HERE. Pre-save the album HERE.

A Brand New Day” was co-produced with Paul Childers and recorded at County Q studios in Nashville. He shares: “It starts with birds singing, a tribute to my mother who always fed birds, and then sonically sweeps into me pounding out the rhythm the song was written around. I got the idea early one morning while taking my dog ‘DJ’ out for a short walk. I was stopped by how beautiful the colors in the sky were that morning and when I looked toward the west, I could still clearly see the moon in the sky. Standing there I said, ‘Good morning sunshine. Good night moon’ and then my next line is what I say to my wife Kathy, “good morning sweet love, good morning to you.” I wrote the rest of the lyrics about second chances, one more time to get it right, to make amends if you’re a ‘cold heart breaker’ and acknowledging the spirit, the soul and the one whose always in control.’”

The colors MALLOY saw in the sky that morning helped to inspire the look and feel of the “A Brand New Day” video and to cast his dog “DJ,” a three year old 100% German shepherd, in it. The video was directed by Andrew Rozario for Casting Life Films with animator, Beau Burnette and illustrator, Ian Buchanan.

MIRROR ALBUM COVER

MIRROR is a journal of DAVID MALLOY’s life, his love and the loss of his only son who passed away 18 years ago. MALLOY stepped back from his career for a time but was re-inspired to create once again when a conversation over dinner with friends and a psychic medium happened to be at the table. She offered MALLOY a private reading, from which he said he normally does not subscribe to that sort of thing, but a message was given to him from his son asking him why he wasn’t writing songs, thus triggering the music and the lyrics that surfaced from his heart and soul and now appear on this album that comes out April 26. The album’s first single and official music video “I Play Gimme Shelter” was released January 11. Listen to the song HERE, watch the YouTube video HERE and read the press release HERE.

Throughout his career, DAVID MALLOY has been lauded for his technique of “becoming” the artist he was writing for or producing, similar to an actor getting into character. Many agree that this was a key to his success. He is credited with creating the crossover-influenced sound of country music that defined the genre in the 80’s and 90’s. He’s produced artists Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Mindy McReady, Reba McEntire, Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash and more. As a songwriter, David Malloy was inducted into the 2022 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame along with Shania Twain, Steve Wariner, Hillary Lindsey and Gary Nicholson and has co-penned numerous songs with Even Stevens and recording artist Eddie Rabbitt throughout Eddie’s career (whom MALLOY produced.) He has had his songs recorded by artists in multi-genres of music such as Badfinger, Bettye LaVette, Billy Burnette, Dr. Hook, Fleetwood Mac, Gregg Allman Band, Julianne Hough, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tim McGraw, Roy Orbison and many more.

Description automatically generated‘Sam’s Place’ Album Cover

LITTLE FEAT, one of rock’s signature and most acclaimed bands, are inviting everyone to join them over at SAM’S PLACE. Due out May 17 on Hot Tomato Productions/MRI.

It marks the band’s first new studio album in 12 years, first-ever blues album and the first one to feature linchpin conga player Sam Clayton on lead vocals on every song. This joyously blues-soaked party gets started today (March 7) with the album’s first single/video “You’ll Be Mine,” a cover of the Willie Dixon-written chestnut popularized by Howlin’ Wolf. Watch the video HERE, stream the song HERE, and pre-order/pre-save the album HERE. See the full track listing below and view the band’s extensive “Can’t Be Satisfied Tour” dates HERE and below.

The members of LITTLE FEAT 2024 are: Bill Payne, Keyboards and Vocals; Sam Clayton, Percussion and Vocals; Fred Tackett, Guitars and Vocals, Kenny Gradney, Bass; Scott Sharrard, Guitars and Vocals; and Tony Leone, drums and vocals. Their individual musical chops and collective chemistry light up the nine-track SAM’S PLACE, which was waxed at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, TN (August 2023), except for “Got My Mojo Working (Live),” recorded live at the Boulder Theatre in Boulder, CO (December 17, 2022). This is the first LITTLE FEAT album recorded with new members Sharrard and Leone.

The band’s longtime friend, the beloved Bonnie Raitt, provides vocals on the Muddy Waters gem “Long Distance Call,” a duet with Sam, and the album’s other special guests are Michael “Bull” LoBue on harmonica, Marc Franklin on trumpet, and Art Edmaiston on saxophone on select songs.

LITTLE FEAT emerged from the pandemic with their sense of humor, chops, and collective joy in playing intact—and their creativity has been renewed with SAM’S PLACE. The idea for the album started with Bill, but the whole band jumped in. They started working on songs at sound checks. Sam, Scott and Fred wrote a new song, “Milk Man.” Visiting backstage at a FEAT show, Bonnie Raitt suggested the Howlin’ Wolf tune “You Will Be Mine.” Scott suggested “Why People Like That,” a Bobby Charles tune. Sam chose the Willy Dixon-penned “Don’t Go No Further,” a deep Muddy track. And they included a live version of “Got My Mojo Working.”

Scott had recorded in Memphis, and they eventually found their way to the second Phillips (the first was Sun Studios, where Elvis began his career) studio there, complete with Jerry Lee Lewis’s piano, which Bill noted “practically played itself.” FEAT’s a rock band, but as Scott observed, at the end “the blues is home,” and they basically recorded it live in the studio, in the tradition. Their playing is at an all-time high, and Bill thought their musical conversation was “flawless.”

Sam was a happy vocalist. His own “Milk Man,” a song about his nephew, has lyrics from his wife, Joni. The duet with Bonnie on “Long Distance Call,” he humbly admitted, was classic. “We go good together, man.” “Last Night” was done in memory of Sam’s very good friend, the late Ed Bradley of Sixty Minutes. And “Why People Like That” was particularly satisfying. “I just like the way the slide sounds and everything. I knew Scott is a great slide player too, plus he is a great lead guitarist. And I know we would put our touch to it, the Little Feat touch. So we just sort of did it. Scott just adds a lot to it and he answers to what I’m singing.”

SAM’S PLACE scratches a deep itch. Sam added, “I’m very happy because I was never expecting anything like that. I mean, I have wanted to, but I just wasn’t expecting it to come to fruition. It was a long wait, but it’s satisfying.”

Here’s the track listing for SAM’S PLACE:

  1. Milkman- Written by Sam Clayton (ASCAP), Fred Tackett for Hoceanna Music (ASCAP), and Scott Sharrard for Brickyard Blues Music BMI
  2. You’ll Be Mine – Written by Willie Dixon for Hoochie Coochie Music (BMI)

ABOUT LITTLE FEAT:

The members of Little Feat emerged from the pandemic with their sense of humor, chops, and collective joy in playing intact on their 2024 album Sam’s Place. Over the past three years, they’ve focused tours on their epic live album Waiting for Columbus and re-issues of some of their classic albums (Sailin’ Shoes, Dixie Chicken, and Waiting for Columbus). Audience response has been rapturous. The band builds on a deep, over 50-year history. Little Feat used a combination of elite musicianship and brilliant, idiosyncratic songwriting to create a repertoire that transcends all boundaries. California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country and rockabilly mixed with New Orleans swamp boogie led to a powerful sound that has kept the audience dancing for decades. Their groove – in songs like “Dixie Chicken,” “Spanish Moon,” “Fat Man in the Bathtub,” and “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” is a continuous thread of excellence that embraces the qualities of exploration that make up Little Feat, its music, while honoring their brothers that began this journey decades ago: Lowell George, Richie Hayward, and Paul Barrere. Their legacy is honest and durable with no end in sight. It has always been about the songs and musicianship. They’re in top form now with Scott Sharrard on lead gutiar/vox and Tony Leone on drums/vox, and with founder Bill Payne on keys/vox, Fred Tackett on guitars/vox, Kenny Gradney on bass, and Sam Clayton on percussion/vox.

Veteran California singer-songwriter-guitarist JEFF LARSON today (March 6) has shared the lyric video for “Something of A Dream” ahead of the single’s release this Friday (March 8). With its warm California rock-rooted sound, the track marks the first release from the melodically sparkling ADOBE HOME album and features Gerry Beckley of AMERICA, who co-produced the 13-track disc with LARSON, on bass, electric lead guitar and organ. The album is out April 26 on Nashville-based Melody Place. Watch the colorful video HERE, read a Q&A below with LARSON, and pre-save the single HERE.

The video was premiered yesterday by Wildfire Music, which noted: “Coming from an album that takes inspiration from California, it’s not surprising that the lyric video for ‘Something of a Dream’ does fit very well with the colors and moods of Adobe Home. While lyric videos vary widely, the animated quality of this one does add considerably to the poetic feeling and imagery of the track, taking us into golden hour colors, terra cotta interiors, and out onto the desert highway, too. It’s a definite bonus to the experience of the song to see this flowing and inviting video alongside it.”

LARSON wrote eight of the songs on ADOBE HOME: two with legendary songwriter Jack Tempchin (of the Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling” fame); one with Beckley, and one with Robert Lamm of Chicago. It’s an album with subject matter that touches on people, places, and things with styles ranging from Americana, folk-rock, power pop, and some jazz elements. See the track listing below and read the album launch press release HERE. The album comes on the heels of IT’LL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN, his acclaimed 2023 six-song tribute EP to the late iconic singer and songwriter Tim Hardin.

Here’s a Q&A with LARSON about “Something of A Dream.”

“Something of a Dream” Q&A with JEFF LARSON

“Something of a Dream” is the album’s first single. Can you talk about why you feel it’s a good introduction to the album?

JEFF LARSON: Of course, I’m partial to all the songs on the album, but it’s a mark of good songcraft to have one that goes from major to minor in its feel with a good hook to carry it on.  I think “Something of a Dream” fits that.

The song has a gorgeous California rock-rooted sound—it’s a winning combination with an ear-catching lilting melody, ringing guitars, and resonant harmonies. Can you talk about what inspired the song musically?

LARSON: I love jangly pop-folk-rock music and bands like REM (“The One I Love”) and Real Estate to The Byrds, Beatles, Moody Blues, etc.  It’s fun for me since the riff I play at the top of the chorus is something I’ve had around since high school. Things like riffs and melodies seem to hang around until they’re exercised.  The pandemic was a bit of a reset of innocence when it came to songwriting and recording so a lot of things came out for me.  I was just approaching things for the song and the feel.  I also hadn’t written on electric guitar in a while, and this was one of several songs that originated from that so it’s fresh to me.

Gerry Beckley, with whom you co-produced the album, is featured on bass, electric lead guitar, and organ. What’s it like for you guys to work together?

LARSON: We have been collaborating in some fashion for many years now.  The pandemic accelerated that activity with the downtime for songwriting, recording, and the back and forth on tracking instruments, backing vocals, and the overall production process. There is a backlog of material even now of my song recordings as well as his new solo release due in 2024, that I co-produced, sang backing vocals, etc.  The issue for us is not output, it’s outlets.  Melody Place, as a label, has been kind of enough to give this material a hearing and let some air out of the ballon for what tends to build up for me.

The song has open-ended lyrics about a romance: “And I remember the way you looked with your eyes so far away.” What inspired this song? The lyrics have a haunting feel.

LARSON: Lyrically, this came from observations of friends’ relationships and my own past experiences.  It has some longing, frustration, melancholy, and a little psychedelic imagery with a line like “from the desert to the sea inside.”  I discovered the Days of Future Passed by The Moody Blues in 2021 (yes, just getting to it) and maybe some of that vibe came through.

The video has beautiful atmospheric images of the American southwest, the ocean, and adobe homes with the lyrics superimposed. Why do you feel this visualization is a good way for listeners/viewers to experience the song?

LARSON: I’ve always been attracted to songs that paint pictures with the music and lyrics.  It’s one of those areas, if handled well, that can keep a song from becoming pedestrian.  Regarding the imagery of the video, I worked with a neighbor I met around the time I started recording Adobe Home.  Ryan Corey and I connected on shared musical interests, and he was a graphics designer with Smog Design in L.A.  We discussed that it should connect to the album graphics which he designed and to make those come alive a bit.  It fits the vibe of the song and provides a window into the album as a whole.”

ABOUT JEFF LARSON:

JEFF LARSON is a veteran singer-songwriter from the San Francisco Bay area. Musically, Jeff got his start under the wing of producer Elliot Mazer (Neil Young, The Band) playing in clubs and venues throughout the Bay area. As a native Californian, the influences are obviously present and reach from the golden era of L.A.’s Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter scene to the Bay area’s musical heritage and the tension between the two. While remaining a solo artist, he’s collaborated with Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, Chicago’s Robert Lamm, John Blakeley of The Sandals, and Eagles songwriter Jack Tempchin, among others. His prolific body of work created over the years has been released by various means and labels with licensing opportunities with JVC Victor Japan, Universal / Rhino, BMG and others from The Netherlands to Japan. “Larson’s earnest vocals and unwaveringly engaging folk-rock-country songs have an alluring feel,” wrote the San Jose Mercury News in 2011 about his album The World Over. “Larson’s warm, wonderful songs will grab you immediately and just get better with each subsequent listening. Every one of the 10 numbers here proves to be an individual gem.”

ABOUT LANE SMITH

“It kind of came to the ultimatum: either fight bulls or play music.” Country singer Lane Smith is no stranger to hard living and hard work—raised just north of San Antonio in Spring Branch, Texas, he grew up rodeoing, specifically as a bullfighter. He chose that piece of the equation because it was the part he could control, and it was a bit less scary than riding bulls. As an outsider, admittedly, it’s a little hard to grasp the nuance.

The overlap between country music and rodeo culture is strong, and well documented. Chris LeDoux and Garth Brooks told us all about it—the sport isn’t for the faint of heart. It stretches away from home, from loved ones, with long, dirty hours and no guarantee of a payoff.

In fact, it’s more likely to imagine a scenario of walking away beat up, busted, and possibly even further away from a goal than where you might’ve started. It’s not that different than playing shows on the road or that far removed from the idea of embarking on an independent career in country music that you plan to build from the ground up.

But that’s exactly what Smith has done. He released his first EP in 2018 and another in 2021, with singles earning more than a million plays on all platforms. His catchy blend of country music “will chill you to the bones while you’re tappin’ your feet,” as his song “Big Show” exclaims.

And it seems to be catching on. He’s already crossed off a few of his bucket-list venues, including the legendary Gruene Hall, along with supporting slots with artists like Kyle Park, Matt Stell, Colt Ford, and Chase Matthews, to name just a few. “I loved rodeoing from the day I started to the day I decided music was where I wanted to be,” he says. “But I had two dreams growing up; one was rodeo, and one was music, and I’m glad that’s where I’ve landed now.”

ABOUT TYLER BRADEN

Tyler Braden has the gritty powerhouse vocals, the expressive pen and the ability to deliver a lyric with complete conviction worthy of a headliner. His new Warner Music Nashville EP, Neon Grave, combines deep-rooted country tradition with the rollicking, high-energy instincts of a born rock ‘n’ roller. The project’s flagship single, “Try Losing One,” hit No. 1 on SiriusXM The Highway’s Hot 30 Countdown. Billboard asserted that the fiery, yearning ballad features “one of the most moving vocal deliveries in country music right now,” while MusicRow declared that it “burns with ferocious power and passion.” Braden began crafting his sound as a teenager in Slapout, AL, where he demonstrated his mettle playing four-hour cover sets. He continued to perform between shifts as a firefighter in both Montgomery and Nashville. His first date at the homegrown Whiskey Jam concert series in January 2017 paved his path to today. With 200 MILLION streams to his name, Braden is now taking stages world-round. His growing list of tour credits includes Brooks & Dunn, Brantley Gilbert, Chris Stapleton, Dierks Bentley and Mitchell Tenpenny; this summer, he will join select dates of Luke Bryan’s Country On run. With studio recordings that pack the punch of his propulsive live performances, Braden’s energy and emotion are connecting with fans across the globe.

ABOUT TREATY OAK REVIVAL

Treaty Oak Revival is a Texas country rock band founded deep in the heart of West Texas. Starting in 2019; the band has formed itself on a foundation of Texas Red Dirt Country combined with its influences of punk and southern rock in their style and playing.

ABOUT CHANCEY WILLIAMS

Saddle Bronc athlete turned neo-traditional country music sensation Chancey Williams has gone from competing on horseback, to performing as a headliner at fairs, festivals, and venues across the country. As one of only two artists (Chris LeDoux) to both compete in the rodeo and perform on the main stage at Cheyenne Frontier Days, and the only singer/songwriter to be endorsed by CINCH®, Williams is the next authentic cowboy of country music.

Growing up on a ranch in the northeastern corner of Wyoming, Williams is one of the proud few hailing from Moorcroft, WY – a town so small it doesn’t need stoplights. Rodeo, wrestling, and academic talents took him first to Casper College, and then to the University of Wyoming.  Williams earned several degrees, including a Master’s in Public Administration, but it was music and the camaraderie of the road that continued to take him all over the United States.

2023 brought a string of continued successes – Williams kicked off the year with the release of his latest album, One of These Days, was invited to make his debut at the historic Grand Ole Opry, played multiple dates with Parker McCollum and Ian Munsick, made an appearance at Cheyenne Frontier Days with Dierks Bentley, stopped to visit military families at several Fisher House locations nationwide, and capped the year performing on national television opening the 5th round of the National Finals Rodeo and headlining the main showroom at South Point (“ground zero”) at the most important rodeo event in the world.

In January, Williams released his new single “A Cowboy Who Would,” this time with hit songwriter Brice Long at the production helm. The tune – which offers a shift in the typical “leaving kind” cowboy mentality and, instead, finds the former saddle bronc athlete opting to hang his hat with the woman he loves – has already been added by more than 150 country stations nationwide, was featured by PickleJar’s “Up All Night” program (which is syndicated on 47 Cumulus stations nationwide), was featured on country music’s biggest and best longest-running countdown show in North America, Country Top 40’s Launchpad with Fitz!, and is receiving airplay on Local Radio Network’s MainStream Country and Super Star Country show formats. His 2024 tour includes Williams’ debut performance at The Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, a headlining spot at the Black Hills Stock, and a return to the Grand Ole Opry.

ABOUT DANNY STEVENS

Danny Stevens is a Nashville based singer and songwriter who was also the frontman of The Audition, an underrated and prolific pop-rock band that was active in the early to late 2000’s. Danny admittedly hasn’t done any long-form interviews about his time with The Audition so we get the most in-depth and honest record to date about Danny first joining the band, their relationship with the controversial Victory Records, to the band’s quiet disbandment. Danny also unveils his new solo project, which hasn’t been officially announced, but will be sweeping the airways in the next few months. As you’ll hear him describe, this is just the beginning of the most exciting phase in his musical career.

Buzzed-about new UK band KillerStarRob Fleming and James Sedge—today (February 29) roll out the video for “You’re A Chameleon” ahead of their self-titled debut album’s release tomorrow, Friday, March 1. The disc has earned a four-star review in the March issue of the UK’s respected Mojo magazine as well as press accolades in the US (*see the “critical praise” section below*).

Watch the video HERE for this Fleming-penned “driving hard rock track that blended in some catchy vocal hooks, melodies and harmonies, with a few twists and turns,” he says. Fleming (guitars, synths, vocals) and Sedge (drums) are joined on You’re A Chameleon” by three of the late great David Bowie’s most trusted collaborators, Earl Slick (guitars), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass), and Emm Gryner (backing vocals).

With lyrics like “When were you going to let me know/Is it time to let things go/I am seeing all the signs, can you read between the lines/You keep me running on,” “You’re A Chameleon” invokes “someone who is chameleon-like in character, chopping and changing, up and down and yet despite all of that is supportive and inspiring,” reveals Fleming.

The song’s drama is amplified by the engaging video with its focus on a male character—played by actor Sami Erkkila-Pinta—who goes about his business secretly and enigmatically in the streets of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  It was directed by Laura Lynn Petrick, whose credits include music videos for Weyes Blood, Jessica Pratt, Allah-Las, Girl in Redm, and TOPS. Her films include Lempo (coming soon, 2024) and Superior (2016), featured in Cannes Aviff.

As heard on their introductory singles “Got Me All Wrong,” “Falling Through” and “Should’ve Known Better, KillerStar expresses timeless ‘70s musicianship and art-rock invention through a contemporary prism. And if you’re reeling back the years, where better to look for inspiration than Bowie? The duo have called upon an array of his key collaborators for the project—Earl Slick (guitar), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass), Mike Garson (piano), Emm Gryner (backing vocals), Mark Plati (bass), Tim Lefebvre (bass), and Donny McCaslin (saxophone)—and collectively they’re created the seemingly impossible: a band that’s new and essential for 2024, but also one that channels the creative ethos and independent spirit of the man himself.

KillerStar was formed by Fleming and Sedge (drums) to capture a sound that they felt was missing: one that linked the current resurgence of psychedelia, the contemporary indie and alternative scenes, and the primal rush of early ‘70s rock ‘n’ roll. While they were definitively David Bowie fans, the idea of assembling a team of his collaborators arose more by chance than design when Rob invited Emm Gryner to contribute vocals before the other members arrived almost fortuitously.

With songs exuding gritty rock ‘n’ roll and time-honoured glamour, the record was full written and arranged by Rob and James before being completed by some suitably top tier collaborators. Mixing was provided by Dave Eringa, best known for his long-term creative connection with Manic Street Preachers, while mastering was provided by Miles Showell at Abbey Road.

The result is the band’s debut album, which is available to pre-order HERE. It will be released on limited edition 180-gram gold vinyl, black vinyl, CD and digital formats.

On the live front, KillerStar will play a special UK album launch show at London’s 100 Club on March 16th. Remaining tickets are available HERE.

Rob and James will be joined by three of the key musicians on the album in the shape of Mike Garson, Mark Plati, and Emm Gryner (who will also play an opening solo set) along with keyboardist Dom Beken (Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, The Orb), and guitarist Kevin Armstrong.

Notably, Armstrong collaborated with Bowie on the soundtrack for the film Absolute Beginners. He also played in the band for Bowie’s Live Aid appearance and recorded the song “Dancing In The Street” with Bowie and Mick Jagger. He co-wrote the title track of Bowie’s 1995 album Outside and was a member of Tin Machine. Kevin was also the guitarist and bandleader for Iggy Pop from 2014 to 2019. He played guitar on the Iggy Pop album, 1986’s Blah Blah Blah, and was musical director for Iggy Pop’s world tour that year. He also played in Sinead O’Connor’s band, amongst many others.

Critical Praise For KillerStar’s Debut Album

“The standout ‘Go (Hold On Tight)’ moves in slinky fashion before unfurling a gigantic, irresistible chorus; ‘You’re A Chameleon’ channels Suede and the closing ‘Falling Through’ takes almost seven minutes to tell its beguiling tale, as Donny McCaslin’s saxophone wails appealingly in the background. There’s more to come here, hopefully.”
–John Aizlewood, MOJO (March 2024) (★★★★)

“…merges classic rock, art rock, and powerful melodies/harmonies. It features many David Bowie collaborators including guitarists Earl Slick and Mark Plati. ‘Should’ve Known Better’ rockets to catchy heights. ‘Go (Hold on Tight)’ spotlights Plati’s baritone guitar and notably reflects Bowie’s experimental bent. ‘Feel It’ is a resonant rocker.”
–Bret Adams, VINTAGE GUITAR (March 2024, Album Review)

“…new band with a fresh art rock aesthetic…impeccable musicianship”
– Andy Kaufmann, Music Connection (January 2024, album review)

“…uncanny project…evocative debut album…”
– Pete Prown, VINTAGE GUITAR (March 2024, Feature Article)
