He also returned 9 punts for 60 yards, rushed for 154 yards, returned 45 kickoffs for 1,088 yards, and scored 45 touchdowns (44 receiving and 1 kickoff return), and helped organize his 1985 Chicago Bears teammates to perform the “Super Bowl Shuffle,” hit song that raised money for charity.

JEFF LARSON TO RELEASE

GERRY BECKLEY OF AMERICA

JEFF LARSON will release his first solo full-length album in a decade—the melodically sparkling and CA-themed ADOBE HOMEApril 19 via Nashville-based label Melody Place. Co-produced by the veteran California singer-songwriter with Gerry Beckley of America, the album will be launched March 8 with the LARSON composition “Something of A Dream.” The 13-track album comes on the heels of IT’LL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN, the veteran singer-songwriter’s acclaimed 2023 six-song tribute EP to the late iconic singer and songwriter Tim Hardin.

LARSON wrote eight of the songs on ADOBE HOME: two with legendary songwriter Jack Tempchin (of the Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling” fame); one with Beckley, and one with Robert Lamm of Chicago. It’s an album with subject matter that touches on people, places, and things with styles ranging from Americana, folk-rock, power pop, and some jazz elements. See the track listing below.

“This project started in 2020 when I just moved to the San Diego area (from the San Francisco Bay area),” says LARSON. “Exploring and learning about my new surroundings influenced several songs, starting with ‘Adobe Home,’ ‘This Summer,’ and ‘Better Part of the Morning.’  I’ve continued my ongoing collaboration with co-producer and friend, Gerry Beckley,” he adds. “We help each other as sounding boards on the production side, we co-wrote one song, and he plays bass and keyboards throughout the album.  I also became friends with Jack Tempchin, who is a neighbor. Along with producing a record for Jack, we co-wrote a couple of songs for this album. I think it captures the time it was written and the emotions I went through.”

Here’s the track listing and songwriting credits for ADOBE HOME:

ABOUT JEFF LARSON:

JEFF LARSON is a veteran singer-songwriter from the San Francisco Bay area. Musically, Jeff got his start under the wing of producer Elliot Mazer (Neil Young, The Band) playing in clubs and venues throughout the Bay area. As a native Californian, the influences are obviously present and reach from the golden era of L.A.’s Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter scene to the Bay area’s musical heritage and the tension between the two. While remaining a solo artist, he’s collaborated with Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, Chicago’s Robert Lamm, John Blakeley of The Sandals, and Eagles songwriter Jack Tempchin, among others. His prolific body of work created over the years has been released by various means and labels with licensing opportunities with JVC Victor Japan, Universal / Rhino, BMG and others from The Netherlands to Japan. “Larson’s earnest vocals and unwaveringly engaging folk-rock-country songs have an alluring feel,” wrote the San Jose Mercury News in 2011 about his album The World Over. “Larson’s warm, wonderful songs will grab you immediately and just get better with each subsequent listening. Every one of the 10 numbers here proves to be an individual gem.”

GREGORIAN—“The World’s Most Successful Choir”—will make their much-anticipated North American debut as part of their 2023-2024 world tour. “We’re all really excited to finally bring these shows to the U.S.,” says GREGORIAN brainchild and founder and owner of Nemo-Studios and omeN-Publishing Frank Peterson. “For 23 years the audiences across all of Europe and Asia have been incredible and our hope is that the Americans embrace us with the same enthusiasm.”

BRIAN SETZER Names Top Five Songs That Served As His Influences As He Gears Up For February And March 2024 Dates

NAMES TOP FIVE SONGS
THAT SERVED AS HIS INFLUENCES

Description automatically generatedDownload the admat

As BRIAN SETZER gears up to hit the road this spring, the iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, and three-time Grammy Award-winner talked about the five essential songs that served as his inspiration.

Here are BRIAN SETZER’s essential five songs that he listens to before shows.

Elvis Presley, “Mystery Train”

“The song that first got me is ‘Mystery Train’ by Elvis Presley. And when I heard that guitar, a hand came out of the jukebox and said ‘you’re going to play this music!’”

Sammy Masters, “Pink Cadillac”

“I dare anybody to even try and find this song. It’s by a guy named Sammy Masters. This is some of the finest guitar playing I’ve ever heard in any genre. The guitar player’s name was Jimmy Bryant.”

Bobby Helms, “Tennessee Rock ‘N’ Roll”

“Give me some of that ‘Tennessee Rock ‘N’ Roll.’ How good is this song? And check out the guitar on this one, and the vocal.”

The Clash, “I Fought The Law”

“So in 1979, to be honest with you, music had gotten a bit stale for me. And when this band came out, and I heard this song, I thought ‘Wow! This is what I want.’”

Merle Travis, “Blue Smoke”

“There’s a guitar player named Merle Travis. And he was a little bit before Chet Atkins and he invented this style of guitar playing. So for me, this is definitive in my style of playing.”

SETZER’s 2024 dates mark his first live shows in four years and follow a busy and successful 2023 with his critically acclaimed THE DEVIL ALWAYS COLLECTS album (released in September 2023). The tour kicks off February 24 in California and includes stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Dallas, Austin and more before wrapping March 10 in Nebraska (see full itinerary below). ABOUT BRIAN SETZER:

Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner BRIAN SETZER has achieved one career milestone after another. He’s sold millions of albums and is a “Musician’s Musician” credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles. Setzer is widely credited for taking two forgotten genres, rockabilly and swing, adding his own blend of gunpowder and rockin’ style, and completely reinventing and single-handedly resurrecting them in the process. Along the way, he has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records and received the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 19-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist. He is consistently cited as one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. SETZER is also, fittingly, in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. On the live front, Setzer has headlined venues and festivals worldwide, including a 1983 headlining slot on the iconic US Festival in California, The Playboy Jazz Festival, a three-night, sold-out headlining run at the Hollywood Bowl with the 98-piece Philharmonic Orchestra, Woodstock ’99, and performing in front of more than 150,000 people as headliner of the Montreal Jazz Festival.  His reach also includes films and TV, where his roles include portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran in the 1987 film, La Bamba,  Fox’s “Beverly Hills 90210,” among many others, and he is one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of “The Simpsons” in 2002. That same year, SETZER was personally requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. SETZER had the honor of being invited in 2006 to perform at the White House for the President of the United States. Also in 2006, he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame with the Stray Cats. In 2014, SETZER received the distinct honor of being asked by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 “Stray Cat” guitar, joining an elite collection of iconic treasures at the museum.

ABOUT JOSH ROSS

Echoing the primary themes of country in his pop-rock-infused way, Josh Ross’s take on love, work, and play is often documented through his whirlwind experiences. From moving to Nashville, the night of a tornado, leaving only a month later when a global pandemic arrived, to developing an ever-evolving career amidst the drawbacks of injuries, lockdowns, and conflicting relationships, Josh Ross is a country artist bound by the act of forging past and overcoming restraints.

“There is something to be said about when your heart is really in the right place to sing something… As an artist, I want the listener and me to go back to a song and remember our exact experiences around it, to encourage connection in all forms,” Josh said. The need for that musical connection began growing up in Burlington, Ontario’s suburbia. Overhearing his parents sing along to Guns N Roses and Bruce Springsteen in their kitchen while he ran around the house pretending to play guitar. Learning in those early years what music was, he found himself writing words in his notebook that, at the time, he didn’t realize were poems and lyrics. Onwards through school, he focused on sports like motocross and football, eventually encountering the injuries that came with each game.

Following several football-related injuries at Ontario’s Western University, the isolation that came from the injuries allowed Josh some time to develop his relationship with music. Taking nearly empty shuttle buses to get to school due to the cast on his leg, learning how to play guitar in his dorm, and on a few noise-complaint occasions bringing two speakers and a subwoofer into the bathroom to belt songs, Josh eventually made the shift of not just listening to music but making his own.

“I had a lot of catching up to do,” Josh said on his first few years immersing himself in the music industry. From practicing in his dorm to playing his first live show at the Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase in front of 5,000 people, Josh stated that “I used to throw up before the football games because of the anxiety, which is probably why I threw up before that show.” While the pressure to succeed in his sports days poured over into his music career, the drive to achieve inspired him to connect with various songwriters and musicians, eventually leading him to Nashville. In conflict with choosing a stable job post-university or setting his sights on the music industry, Josh Ross’s passions, and talent, pushed him to the path of Nashville, where he further began developing his sound and artistry. From 2019 onwards, Josh Ross dove head-first into his music career as an artist with sonic elements in his music, nodding to raw country, soft rock, and hints of 80s pop-rock.

ABOUT NATE SMITH

Featuring a mix of gritty backwoods soul, rock ‘n’ roll swagger and velvet-thunder vocals, Nate Smith’s personal journey inspired him to be a beacon of country-music hope, an inspirational mission he puts front-and-center. A California native, former worship leader, and lifelong music lover, Smith approaches that mission with a background as eclectic as it gets. Learning guitar at 13, Garth Brooks, Elvis Presley and Bob Seger were among those informing his powerful, fire-from-within vocals, while Michael Jackson made him crave the spotlight and Nirvana gave his sound a jagged edge. In 2018, Smith lost everything he owned in the devastating Camp Fire which tore through Paradise, California, now known as the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state’s history. Although his family was safe, he struggled to cope and turned back to music, hoping that it would help comfort himself and others. Help it did, inspiring a month-long road trip across the U.S. to Music City, writing music and playing dive bars along the way.

ABOUT DYLAN SCHNEIDER

Drawn to the storytelling aspects of country music, Dylan Schneider started performing and writing songs at the age of 14, after meeting Brett Eldredge and singing with him on-stage during a concert. After that, he began posting videos to his Facebook page, where he’d cover popular Country songs, gaining a devoted online following.

ABOUT DREW BALDRIDGE

Drew Baldridge was literally moving cows with his brother on the family farm in Patoka, Illinois, when he fully realized his musical destiny. After years of living in Nashville and experimenting with his sound, Drew understood his new direction. All it took was a trip back to his hometown to get back to his roots. To connect to the country.

“When I was out there, it hit me: I wasn’t making music that was authentic to me. I grew up listening to Alabama, Brooks & Dunn, and John Anderson with my grandpa and my friends. It was the music I was raised on. There are a lot of people just like me who grew up that way, and I want my music to reflect them,” says Baldridge.

That small-town feel is reflected in Baldridge’s newest single, “Senior Year,” which is out now via his own Patoka Sounds banner. Written alongside Tim Nichols (Hall of Fame songwriter) and Jordan Walker (Luke Combs), “Senior Year” has captured the attention of country radio as it connects with fans whose school years have been “cancelled” due to COVID-19. Students, parents, teachers, and more are finding solace in this song as they miss the experiences that come during the culmination of high school. Organic fan discovery led the song to chart on both Billboard and Mediabase with no major label support.

“I have several kids and parents that reach out every day saying this song has impacted them in a big way,” says Baldridge. “Although I know times are tough right now, I am so happy that this song is connecting with people. It is a pretty special feeling.”

“Senior Year” is the follow-up to “Before You” which Baldridge released earlier this year – co-written with LoCash members Preston Brust and Chris Lucas – as a tribute to his fiancé Katherine. Just before quarantine locked the country down, Baldridge was lucky enough to squeeze in a trip to propose to his girlfriend of four years.

ABOUT RENEE BLAIR

With over 50 million streams under her belt, the ACM and CMA Award nominee Renee Blair is just getting started. Blair is a rising country singer who grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and at 15 her passion and pursuit for country music brought her to Nashville. Renee’s journey took a turn when she faced several near-death accidents back-to-back early on in her career forcing her to put her music on pause. That pause transcended into a fire and new approach towards music upon her recovery and shortly after she signed her first publishing deal and record deal under industry stalwarts Shane MacAnally, SMACK Songs, and L.A. Reid, Epic Records. Her music is a captivating blend of her diverse sonic influences alongside a heartfelt vulnerability she shares with fans from the troubles she’s experienced in life. She recently gained significant recognition for having helped pen the certified platinum and #1 single, “Wait In The Truck”, performed by Hardy and Lainey Wilson. Blair has been gracing all kinds of stages; from touring with Willie Nelson to performing at dove bars or The Ryman Auditorium with Hardy. Her upcoming studio album Hillbetty is set to be released in the summer of 2024. “Hillbetty” is an alter-ego created by Blair to embrace every woman’s wild side. The debut single off the album has already become a viral sensation, Holy Cowboy. If you are a Renee Blair fan, you know a good time is a guarantee.

“I have been revisiting material that has been accumulating, and I am sharing some of my favorite songs for the first time!”
ROSS VALORY, 2024

ROSS VALORY, regarded as one of rock’s best bass guitarists and an original member of the multi-platinum band Journey until his 2020 departure, returns today (January 17) with the video for “Tomland.” It’s the hypnotic first single from the bassist and songwriter’s debut solo album ALL OF THE ABOVE due out this April (exact date TBA) on OID Music. Watch the movingly atmospheric video, directed by Michael Cotten, HERE, for the single which is out this Friday (January 19).

Penned by VALORY, the all-instrumental “Tomland” marks the second piece recorded for the project—and the first done entirely at his new studio in the East Bay area of Northern California. The track builds to a ripping, climactic solo by red-hot guitarist Miles Schon, drummer Prairie Prince and keyboardist Eric Levy. VALORY had the basic parts kicking around since shortly after leaving the Steve Miller Band in 1972, a bluesey set of chords that roll into each other mellifluously, something he had jammed on a lot over the years. He pulled it out to fashion a piece that not only recalls the passing of collaborator Tom Size (accomplished engineer known for his work with Mr. Big, Y&T, and Aerosmith), but also offers an affirmation of resolve to move forward, the sunlight of optimism illuminating the process.

ROSS VALORY always had pieces of music tucked away that he had written, although songwriting contributions to Journey slipped away after the first three “experimental” albums. As a member of Journey, VALORY concentrated on shaping the rhythm section and contributing his baritone vocals to the background blend.

During the band’s second coming following the 1995 reunion album Trial By Fire, VALORY began sorting through his files and polishing up some of his old notes. In between tour dates, he pulled together a tight-knit group of collaborators and slowly began to finish what he started. After a lifetime in music, VALORY scrupulously etched ALL OF THE ABOVE. The album was produced by VALORY and co-produced by Jacob Stowe and Eric Levy.

VALORY developed a repertory company of musicians over the years that came together at his studio. He cultivated individual numbers like sprawling projects, experimenting with different arrangements played by an assortment of musicians. Sometimes spending years jamming on these ideas, the pieces took shape slowly. Different ideas were tried and discarded, remodeled and refurbished. The basic concept was to find the heart of the material and expand upon it until VALORY could refine and shape the music’s path to his supreme satisfaction. He cast specific musicians to specific parts. The studio became his laboratory and the compositions his experiments.

From the Latin-fired intensity of “Wild Kingdom” to the ethereal dirge of “No One Wins a War,” the raucous party on “Low Rider” or the brilliant reprise of Santana’s “Incident of Neshabur,” the album presents an evolved artist fully in command of his vision, a lifetime of experience behind the project, augmenting his core associates with guest musicians such as Gregg Errico of Sly & the Family Stone, drummer Steve Smith, and saxophonist Marc Russo. The nine tracks on the album represent the full maturity of VALORY’s musical gifts, cutting a broad swath through the instrumental territory the music travels. He plays keyboards, guitar, and, of course, many basses in a display of cultivated virtuosity across a palette far broader than could be found in his work with Journey. He is stepping out from behind his bass and, for the first time in his more than half-century as a professional musician, representing his vision and his compositions.

VALORY left Journey in 2020 and the band members worked out their issues in a peaceful mediated settlement. VALORY, who spent most of his life as a member of Journey, has no regrets. He counts his blessings at having spent an amazing career with a remarkable group of musicians who succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

As heard on their introductory singles “Falling Through” and “Should’ve Known Better, Rob Fleming and James Sedge’s new band KillerStar expresses timeless ‘70s musicianship and art-rock invention through a contemporary prism. And if you’re reeling back the years, where better to look for inspiration than the late great David Bowie? The duo have called upon an array of his key collaborators for the project—Earl Slick (guitar), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass), Mike Garson (piano), Emm Gryner (backing vocals), Mark Plati (bass), Tim Lefebvre (bass) and Donny McCaslin (saxophone)—and collectively they’re created the seemingly impossible: a band that’s new and essential for 2024, but also one that channels the creative ethos and independent spirit of the man himself.

Today (January 12), KillerStar take another big step towards the March 1 release of their self-titled debut album by sharing the new single and video Got Me All Wrong.” Opening with an instant earworm of a guitar riff, it’s a song which has the immediacy of an old favorite: sophisticated pop-rock with a strut in its step, effortlessly cool vocal harmonies, and the space for every musician to bring their personality and flair to the fore. Musicians playing on “Got Me All Wrong” are Rob Fleming (vocals, guitar, synths) and James Sedge (drums) with guests from the David Bowie band: Earl Slick (guitar), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass), Mike Garson (piano), and Emm Gryner (backing vocals).

Rob Fleming says, “‘Got Me All Wrong’ has a groove and a high energy reflective of the lyrics and playful joy of the tune. James and I are joined by ex-David Bowie bandmates and collaborators Earl Slick, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mike Garson, and Emm Gryner. It was fantastic to have them come together again and work on this new music with us and throughout the whole album. The song ends with something of a musical tour de force of angular crunchy guitar riffs and a virtuoso signature piano solo from Mike.”

Just as the track playfully subverts throwback influences for a new era, the accompanying video does likewise by reimagining visual motifs inspired by the 1920s with a magnetic new performance from Sophie Allen. The video was premiered January 10 by The Big Takeover.

As director JJ Eringa (The Anchoress, Asylums) explains, “What I loved most about the song was its brilliant contrast of angular guitars with swirling sequences that are really quite hypnotic. This video uses sequences from Dada films by Hans Richter, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray, which I love because this video is an opportunity to do a variation on what they were doing back then, recontextualising materials for a new purpose and giving them new life! This is all built around a brilliant central performance from Sophie Allen, who captured the exact balance of playfulness and undeniable cool that I was looking for, and which I think is present in the song too.”

KillerStar was formed by Rob Fleming (vocals, guitars, synths) and James Sedge (drums) to capture a sound that had previously felt missing: one that linked the current resurgence of psychedelia, the contemporary indie and alternative scenes, and the primal rush of early ‘70s rock ‘n’ roll. While they were definitively David Bowie fans, the idea of assembling a team of his collaborators arose more by chance than design when Rob invited Emm Gryner to contribute vocals before the other members arrived almost fortuitously.

With songs exuding gritty rock ‘n’ roll and time-honoured glamour, the record was full written and arranged by Rob and James before being completed by some suitably top tier collaborators. Mixing was provided by Dave Eringa, best known for his long-term creative connection with Manic Street Preachers, while mastering was provided by Miles Showell at Abbey Road.

The result is the band’s debut album, which is available to pre-order HERE. It will be released on limited edition 180-gram gold vinyl, black vinyl, CD and digital formats.

KillerStar will play a special UK album launch show at London’s 100 Club on March 16th. Rob and James will be joined by three of the key musicians on the album in the shape of Mike Garson, Earl Slick, Mark Plati and Emm Gryner (who will also play an opening solo set) along with keyboardist Dom Beken (Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, The Orb). Remaining tickets are available HERE.

DAVID MALLOY Releases First Single “I Play Gimme Shelter” From His Upcoming Solo Debut Album ‘Mirror’ Out 4/26

DAVID MALLOY
RELEASES FIRST SINGLE AND VIDEO AS AN ARTIST,
“I PLAY GIMME SHELTER,”
TODAY, JANUARY 11, FROM HIS UPCOMING SOLO DEBUT ALBUM ‘MIRROR’ OUT APRIL 26
GRAMMY-NOMINATED AND AWARD-WINNING

2022 NASHVILLE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE
SHARES HIS LOVE FOR THE ROLLING STONES

DAVID MALLOY, Nashville songwriter and producer of approximately 40 #1’s that he’s either written and/or produced throughout his prolific and highly successful musical career, has been encouraged by friends and peers to write a book about his life. But that was not something he was interested in doing. “Instead,” Malloy shares, “I wrote an album.” And that album, MIRROR, is due out APRIL 26. The album’s first single and official music video “I Play Gimme Shelter” is released today, January 11. Listen to the song HERE and watch the video HERE.

I Play Gimme Shelter,” written by MALLOY and co-produced with Nashville-based musician and producer Paul Childers, also features background vocalist Jackie Wilson (Season 10 Top 40 “American Idol” Finalist). For the first time in MALLOY’s career, he now stands in the artist’s spotlight and discloses, “Of all the artists I have worked with, there is one artist I have never had the honor or privilege of producing or writing songs for…myself!” He says the decision to release “I Play Gimme Shelter” as the first single from MIRROR was because of “all the chaos and tension now surrounding us in this world. This song had to be the first single.”

MALLOY goes on to say that THE ROLLING STONES’ song “Gimme Shelter,” the first single released on their 1969 Let It Bleed album was reflective of that period of time and energy as stated by MICK JAGGER in a December 14,1995 interview in Rolling Stone magazine (here) as being “kind of an end-of-the world song, really. It’s apocalypse; the whole record’s like that.” MALLOY states that it “reflects our current times unfortunately. I love everything about the Stones’ song ‘Gimme Shelter.’ It sucks you in from the get-go. Some songs you can’t play loud enough, and ‘Gimme Shelter’ and ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ are those songs for me. I wanted to write about how much I love them by creating my own song, ‘I Play Gimme Shelter.’” Of course, my greatest joy would be for the Stones to hear this song. Long live rock and roll!”

Watch the video below.

The official YouTube video of “I Play Gimme Shelter” was directed by Andrew Rozario and DP Michael Stryker of Casting Life Films who also recruited Nashville’s authentic rock quintet Garden of Eden to perform as the young, spirited, and stylish “garage band” in the video that was filmed in various locations in and around East and downtown Nashville, including a hippified and authentic garage band setting where Malloy gets invited in to jam with this group of young rockers to perform “I Play Gimme Shelter” offering musical relief from his long and stressful day as an uptight businessman who needs to let off some steam.

MIRROR is a journal of DAVID MALLOY’s life, his love and the loss of his only son who passed away 18 years ago. MALLOY stepped back from his career for a time but was re-inspired to create once again when a conversation over dinner with friends and a psychic medium happened to be at the table. She offered MALLOY a private reading, from which he said he normally does not subscribe to that sort of thing, but a message was given to him from his son asking him why he wasn’t writing songs, thus triggering the music and the lyrics that surfaced from his heart and soul and now appear on this album.

Throughout his career, DAVID MALLOY has been lauded for his technique of “becoming” the artist he was writing for or producing, similar to an actor getting into character. Many agree that this was a key to his success. He is credited with creating the crossover-influenced sound of country music that defined the genre in the 80’s and 90’s. He’s produced artists Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Mindy McReady, Reba McEntire, Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash and more. As a songwriter, David Malloy was inducted into the 2022 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame along with Shania Twain, Steve Wariner, Hillary Lindsey and Gary Nicholson and has co-penned numerous songs with Even Stevens and recording artist Eddie Rabbitt throughout Eddie’s career (whom MALLOY produced.) He has had his songs recorded by artists in multi-genres of music such as Badfinger, Bettye LaVette, Billy Burnette, Dr. Hook, Fleetwood Mac, Gregg Allman Band, Julianne Hough, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tim McGraw, Roy Orbison and many more.
