WHO:             Baritone saxophonist, bandleader, and UNLV Professor Adam Schroeder and composer/arranger Mark Masters will perform to celebrate the recent release of CT!, their new album featuring thirteen tunes in the Basie/Ellington/Strayhorn style, all composed by renowned trumpeter Clark Terry.

The album CT! with baritone saxophonist Adam Schroeder and arranger Mark Masters serves as a heartfelt homage to this jazz icon, presenting fresh and invigorating arrangements of 13 Clark Terry originals skillfully performed by a 12-piece ensemble.”

ABOUT MARK MASTERS

Mark Masters is an inventive and prolific composer and arranger from southern California.  He organized his first ensemble in 1982.  In 1990, Masters wrote the album PRIESTESS (Capri 74031) to feature Billy Harper and Jimmy Knepper.  A subsequent recording with Knepper, THE JIMMY KNEPPER SONGBOOK (Focus 1001, 1993) featured arrangements by Masters of Knepper’s compositions.

The most recent recording by Masters, OUR METIER (Capri 74150, 2018), features Andrew Cyrille, Oliver Lake, Gary Foster, Mark Turner, Tim Hagans, Putter Smith, and Dave Woodley in a large ensemble setting.  Michael Ullman calls OUR METIER “…an eclectic and beautifully accomplished big band recording that is made up of, for once, Masters’ originals.” DOWNBEAT magazine awarded the recording four stars in its December 2018 issue.  FAREWELL WALTER DEWEY REDMAN (Capri 74089, 2008) features Masters’ “in and out” approach and re-casts Dewey Redman’s music while retaining its substance.  The project features Oliver Lake, Tim Hagans, Dave Carpenter, and Peter Erskine. Other recordings include WISH ME WELL (Capri 74078, 2005), with Steve Kuhn, Gary Smulyan, Gary Foster, and Tim Hagans, EXPLORATION (Capri 74068, 2004) with Grachan Moncur III’s octet arranged by Masters, ONE DAY WITH LEE (Capri 74064, 2004) featuring alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, and THE CLIFFORD BROWN PROJECT (Capri 74059, 2003) featuring Jack Montrose, Gary Smulyan, Tim Hagans, Cecilia Coleman, and Joe La Barbera. In addition, in 2013 Capri released two recordings, ELLINGTON SAXOPHONE ENCOUNTERS (Capri 74118), and EVERYTHING YOU DID: THE MUSIC OF WALTER BECKER & DONALD FAGEN (Capri 74123).  Released in 2017, BLUE SKYLIGHT (Capri 74143) features Masters’ innovative ensemble writing and unique approach to the music of Gerry Mulligan and Charles Mingus.  In 2008, Masters wrote the arrangements for Gary Smulyan’s Reservoir Music (195) release THE JAZZ SOUL OF FRANKIE LAINE.

Masters’ 2005 recording PORGY AND BESS…REDEFINED! (Capri 74069) is a more harmonically adventurous approach to Gershwin’s classic folk opera than what has come before.  John Kelman, writing for All About Jazz said “…Masters’ score is the real star here.  From the opening fanfare he introduces two contrasting elements that, to a large part, define the approach to the whole suite-vibrant swing and some surprisingly free passages.  He clearly proves that it’s possible to take a piece that has been approached from a variety of angles and still find a new way in.”

Since 1998, Masters has been president of The American Jazz Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to the enrichment and enhancement of the appreciation of jazz.  Under Masters’ direction, the AJI supports activities that educate and expose the public to jazz through live performance and an oral history project, as well as by supporting charitable endeavors that advance jazz music.  One such endeavor is the AJI’s FIND YOUR OWN VOICE mentoring program that takes professional musicians to middle and upper school campuses to present clinics and master classes to student musicians.  Masters is currently teaching beginning instrumental music in the Temecula, California schools and volunteering at Eagle Rock High School in Los Angeles, teaching a beginning jazz ensemble.

From 1999 through 2006, Masters was a guest lecturer at Claremont McKenna College involved with the History of Jazz class (ID 109) overseeing an oral history project and writing for and producing a series of concerts that brought such notable artists to the college as Billy Harper, Billy Hart, Bennie Maupin, Rufus Reid, Sam Rivers, Andrew Cyrille, Mark Turner, Gary Foster, Lee Konitz, Jack Montrose, John La Porta, Tim Hagans, Gary Smulyan, Ray Drummond, Steve Kuhn, Peter Erskine, Joe La Barbera, Ted Brown, Grachan Moncur III, Henry Grimes, and Dewey Redman.

In DOWNBEAT magazine’s annual critics poll during the early 2000s, Masters was among those named in the RISING STAR: ARRANGER category.

BILLY MORRISON Shares The Compelling Video For “Drowning,” The First Single From His New Solo Album ‘The Morrison Project,’ Out 4/19

“DROWNING,”

‘THE MORRISON PROJECT,’
OUT APRIL 19

BILLY MORRISON has shared the compelling video for “Drowning,” the first single from his new solo album THE MORRISON PROJECT out April 19 via TLG/VIRGIN MUSIC GROUP. Watch the video, which illustrates the soul-destroying effects of information overload, HERE and pre-save the single, out this Friday (February 23), HERE.

The British guitarist, singer, and songwriter—primarily known as Billy Idol’s rhythm guitar player for the past 15 years alongside lead guitarist Steve Stevens—says, “I drove everyone crazy with this video. First thing I said was ‘we need underwater videography because I’m going to fall into a deep swimming pool with 20lbs of weights attached. So I sink like a stone. I want you to film it! Once I had them on board with that,” he adds, “I threw in ‘oh, and we need to rent three huge cockroaches which are going to crawl all over my face’—I’m sure they all think I’m crazy, but that sense of unease in the video captures the essence of the song. Information overload. We all feel it!” The video was premiered yesterday (February 20) via Heavy Consequence which noted that the “hard-rocking tune is powered by a heavy guitar riff and Morrison’s punk-ish vocal delivery.”

Directed by Devin Szell, produced by Blue Chair Productions, and shot in Los Angeles, the “Drowning” video is “gritty, fast-paced and hectic—an attempt to illustrate what my head felt like at the time,” explains MORRISON. “I had reached a point two or three years ago where the information flow was so constant, so extreme and so polarizing to me that I couldn’t take it all in. Too much news, too many pundits and opinionated idiots. I felt like I was drowning in negativity. My previous solution was to numb out, get loaded, feel nothing, so this time I wrote the song as a cathartic way of dealing with what I was feeling at the time.”

For THE MORRISON PROJECT—his third solo album and first since 2015—he has assembled an electrifying 12 songs including guest performances by Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol, DMC, Al Jourgensen, Steve Vai, Steve Stevens, Linda Perry, Tommy Clufetos, John5, and more. See the track listing below.

THE MORRISON PROJECT was produced by Billy Morrison, mixed by Barry Pointer, and mastered by Dave Donnelly. All the songs on the album—recorded in Los Angeles at various studios—were written by Billy Morrison in collaboration with his guests. Read the album announcement HERE.

How did THE MORRISON PROJECT come together? “I truly believe that making music without any preconceptions or goals yields the most creative and enjoyable results. And that is exactly how this record came to life. Making music with Erik (Eldenius) and Jeordie (White) during Covid, and mixing different musical styles started my journey towards this collection of songs that ended up featuring a lot of my friends.”

CHET ATKINS is the most recorded solo instrumentalist in music history who traveled far to become “Mr. Guitar.” The journey took the legendary icon from Appalachian poverty to international acclaim, from utter obscurity to three Halls of Fame. He is a 14x Grammy Award winner, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient, A Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee.

Now, for the very first time on one album, some of the world’s best guitar players and artists join together to pay a musicians’ tribute to the innovator, songwriter, producer, record company executive and visionary Chet Atkins, as Nashville and the music industry prepare to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday on June 20. Featuring 22 players and artists on this 15-track album from the country, rock, bluegrass and acoustic musical realms, WE STILL CAN’T SAY GOOD BYE is due Friday, April 19 on Morningstar Music Productions, distributed by MVD Entertainment. View a sizzle reel about the album HERE.

WE STILL CAN’T SAY GOOD BYE was produced by country and bluegrass musician and songwriter and 3 x Grammy-winning producer and guitarist CARL JACKSON (Louvin Brothers) and was recorded at Station West in Nashville, TN with Luke Wooten engineering and mixing. Eric Clapton’s guitars were recorded by Simon Climie.

The album’s first single “Mr. Guitar” will be released Friday, March 15 and is performed by Grammy Award-winning guitarist and artist Tommy Emmanuel C.G.P. and Grammy-winning bluegrass fiddler Michael Cleveland.

“Mentoring and encouraging people is something that Chet always did,” says Emmanuel, one of five people ever named a C.G.P. (Certified Guitar Player) by Chet Atkins. “I try to do this thing with Gareth (Pearson) and I try to do the same with all young people. I encourage them to do things that I learned from Chet. I hope that somewhere somehow, I showed somebody something because of him that changed their life and made their life better. Cause he sure did that for me.”

ABOUT MORNINGSTAR MUSIC PRODUCTIONS:

Morningstar Music Productions was created by executive producers and longtime great friends Rodger Glaspey and Ken Leister. The two partners performed in groups that recorded albums during the 70’s as collegians during the Folk/Rock invasion. Producer and musician Carl Jackson approached Rodger and Ken with the desire to produce an album to honor Chet Atkins. The temptation to executive produce an album in Nashville paying homage to Chet Atkins with some of the finest artists and guitar players in the world including Vince Gill, Tommy Emmanuel, Brad Paisley, and other greats was too captivating to pass up… and thus, Morningstar Music Productions was born, with their first album release We Still Can’t Say Good Bye a Musicians’ Tribute To Chet Atkins out April 19.

Musical integrity still matters, as illustrated by guitar trio The String Revolution and guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel winning the Grammy® Award this past Sunday (2/4) in the “Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella” category for their unique reimagining of Johnny Cash’s classic “Folsom Prison Blues.” Sharing the Grammy Award with them is The Man in Black’s son John Carter Cash, who produced the single. Released July 23, 2023 via Copeland International Arts/Universal Music Group, it proves some classics are meant to be reborn. Watch the video for “Folsom Prison Blues” here.

QUOTE FROM THE STRING REVOLUTION:

“Janet Robin, Markus Illko and Rober Luis of the guitar trio, The String Revolution couldn’t be more honored and grateful to the Recording Academy for this Grammy® recognition. It goes without saying, having the master himself Tommy Emmanuel gracing our track, and John Carter Cash producing it, gave it that extra special magic that pushed the recording to shine even more. Huge thanks to the entire team including our engineer Trey Call, mixing engineer Matthew Hyde, and mastering engineer Emerson Mancini who also added the final frosting.”

“The String Revolution is absolutely honored to have received this Grammy Award.® This is a win for all artists out there who work hard and consistently push ourselves to experiment with our craft and continue to create unique and inspirational works. This is a very special moment for us that we will never forget!”

QUOTE FROM TOMMY EMMANUEL:

“I am deeply moved to be honored with a Grammy Award.  I couldn’t believe it when they called our names!  I am so blessed to have been asked to come out and play on ‘Folsom Prison Blues,’ a song I’ve known all my life!  To get to work with The String Revolution and John Carter Cash has been fun and adventurous! Sometimes, you’ve just got to show up, do your thing, and stand back to see what happens!”

QUOTE FROM JOHN CARTER CASH

“Attention: This is not my Daddy’s ‘Folsom Prison Blues.’ My excitement over this unique instrumental arrangement has been unsurpassed in my life up to this point. I am honored to be a part of this wondrous historic recording!”

In a celestial alignment of strings and frets, The String Revolution and Tommy Emmanuel came together to create “Folsom Prison Blues,” a match made in guitar heaven. The String Revolution‘s meticulous approach to reinventing this classic was not taken lightly. With an acute awareness of the need for genius, they enlisted the incomparable Emmanuel to lend his virtuosity to the track. Taking the reins as producer, John Carter Cash infused the recording with more authentic vibes. It was recorded at Cash Cabin Studios, where Johnny and family worked on many recordings. In order to achieve maximum authenticity, one of Johnny Cash’s personal guitars—a 1930’s Martin—was played by The String Revolution’s Markus Illko, while Luther Perkins’ 1955 Fender Esquire (used in the original “Folsom Prison Blues” recording) was played by The String Revolution’s Rober Luis.

The String Revolution is comprised of three professional virtuoso guitar players who create distinctive sounds with their guitars: mimicking percussion, special effects, melodic grooves, bass lines, and more. They share a passion for many different musical styles and guitar techniques which has given The String Revolution a unique sound. This is evident in their studio recordings and live shows. A clear dedication and hard work ethic for the project brought The String Revolution together.

The band includes former Randy Rhoads student Janet Robin (named in the “Top 50 Acoustic Guitarist bonus list” by Guitar Player Magazine, 2017), who is also an acclaimed touring guitarist with the likes of Lindsey Buckingham, Meredith Brooks, Air Supply and many more, award winning Austrian nylon-string guitarist Markus Illko and Cuban multi-credited guitarist Rober Luis.

Tommy Emmanuel has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a CGP (Certified Guitar Player) by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. He’s piled up numerous accolades, including two Grammy Award nominations, two ARIA Awards from the Australian Recording Industry Association (the Aussie equivalent of the Recording Academy); repeated honors in the Guitar Player magazine reader’s poll including a cover story for their August 2017 issue; a cover feature for Vintage Guitar’s July 2020 issue; and was Music Radar’s reader’s poll #1 winner of the Ten Best Acoustic Guitarists in The World.

ABOUT THE STRING REVOLUTION:

THE STRING REVOLUTION, a triumvirate of guitar virtuosos, skillfully craft distinct sounds with their instruments–mimicking percussion, experimenting with special effects, weaving melodic grooves, and anchoring bass lines, all contributing to their unique sonic identity. The passion for diverse musical styles and guitar techniques unites them, evident in both studio recordings and electrifying live performances. Their unwavering dedication and relentless work ethic have forged The String Revolution into a musical force to be reckoned with.

ABOUT TOMMY EMMANUEL:

TOMMY EMMANUEL, a maestro of the strings, boasts a career that reads like a musical odyssey. From sold-out shows in Nashville to Sydney to London, he has amassed accolades, including two Grammy Award nominations and two ARIA Awards from the Australian Recording Industry Association. Emmanuel’s contribution to this collaboration elevates it to unprecedented heights.

Singer and songwriter LAURA PURSELL today (February 2) releases “Shooting Star,” the video and title track from her latest album. Watch it HERE. Marking the first single from her SHOOTING STAR album that came out on Netcom Music this past September, it is PURSELL’s distinctive and finely etched interpretation of the BOB DYLAN composition that appears as the final track on his 1989 Oh Mercy album. Listen to “Shooting Star” on all streaming platforms HERE.

The “Shooting Star” video was filmed and directed by Andrew Rozario and Cinematographer Mike Stryker for Casting Life Films in various downtown Nashville musically historical locations. Viewers will see the famous alleyway behind Tootie’s Orchid Lounge, the backstage entry to the Ryman Auditorium, and just across the alley is the back entry to Roberts Western World, “Nashville’s Home of Traditional Country Music.”

The final scene in the video is atop the pedestrian bridge next to the Tennessee Titans’ Nissan Stadium that offers up the best view of Nashville’s nighttime city skyline, reflecting the city’s growth. “Nashville is where I was born and raised, and I wanted to honor and pay homage to the soul of Nashville I grew up in—the places within our ever-changing skyline that have thankfully been allowed to remain authentic as our city continues to grow,” says LAURA.

Shooting Star” was the last song LAURA performed live on the evening of March 16, 2020 when she and her band (consisting of drummer Chris Ross, bassist Jeff Takaguchi, and pianist Rick Hils) were told to fold up and leave the stage of a Burbank, CA venue as the city of Los Angeles was shutting down at midnight due to the Covid-19 pandemic mandate. “Chris Ross had brought this song to my attention as we were looking for hidden gems to cover and possibly record. Ironically, the night we performed this song, my dear friend and guitarist, Barry Zweig had passed away and the song’s lyrics struck me even deeper.”

“Shooting Star” was never a single for Dylan, “and after we recorded it,” says LAURA, “I played it for the head of my record label, Netcom Music’s Ray Clawson. He responded to the musical conversation that was happening between my vocal and Kenny Meredieth’s guitar. He loved the connection and the feeling that was captured on this recording.”

(click on image to watch official video)

During the time of the lockdown, LAURA and her band began to meet daily in her living room at her then-home in Studio City, CA to rehearse and keep their chops up, work on new tunes, and figure out the road ahead. Facing an uncertain future, they recorded a collection of songs at producer and guitarist Kenny Meriedeth’s Deep End Music Studios in Burbank. They set their focus on material from the Americana, country and roots rock idioms. LAURA states, “This album reflects a pivotal time when I began to stretch out vocally, work on different genres, and embrace a new vibe that reflected what the band members and I were going through at the time. Recording this album kept us all somewhat sane and energized.”

Halfway through recording SHOOTING STAR, LAURA’s beloved father Bill Pursell—a respected Nashville pianist, composer, and orchestrator/arranger—passed away from Covid-19. SHOOTING STAR was shelved indefinitely, and LAURA relocated back to her hometown of Nashville to settle her father’s estate and solidify his musical legacy. In the fall of 2021, LAURA picked up where she and the band had left off while recording SHOOTING STAR. Out of dozens of recorded tracks, 10 songs were chosen for inclusion for the album. SHOOTING STAR is an ode to loss and memory, and the perfect title for this collection of songs.
