U.S. Born K-Pop Singer And Dancer AleXa Releases “Revolution” Single And Second EP ‘Decoherence’ Today

DATE: OCTOBER 21, 2020

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN/MITCH SCHNEIDER

AleXa, the daughter of a Korean adoptee and raised as a small-town girl in Oklahoma, rediscovers her Korean roots by pursuing her dream of becoming a K-Pop star.

Today (October 21), singer and dancer AleXa releases her second EP DECOHERENCE and its groundbreaking title track “Revolution.” Watch the video forRevolution here and see the DECOHERENCE track listing below.

The new EP follows AleXa’s 2019 multilingual K-Pop debut single, the explosive “Bomb”; it received over five million views in one week and hit #7 on Billboard’s “World Digital Song Sales” chart. With more than 18 million views to date, AleXa’s “Bomb” was produced by renowned Swedish composers at EKKO Music Rights, the team behind hits by K-Pop mainstays Red Velvet, Twice, NCT and more. The song and video “Bomb” combine Brazilian Funk with electronic elements and Afrobeats choreography to create an exciting dance track that allows AleXa to showcase her powerful stage presence.

Next up for AleXa was her eight-track debut Do Or Die, which was helmed by a chart-topping team at one of the largest K-Pop song production houses and speaks with AleXa’s all-or-nothing attitude. The “Do Or Die” title track is a girl power anthem about facing your fears and [the ability to] overcome them,” says Moonshine, comprised of songwriters Ellen Berg Tollbom and Cazzi Opeia. “When you feel like you have no choice left but to fight for your life, you’re only in it to win it.” The music video for the “Do Or Die title track is a grand scale production highlighted by action scenes and CGI.

With the EP’s newly released single and video, “Revolution” fans will see the finale to AleXa‘s three-part ground-breaking music video concept, an AI caught in a multiverse storyline (detailed in “Allegory of the Cave,” a hidden track on the physical copy of the new EP) which began with “Bomb,” was followed by “Do Or Die” and concludes with “Revolution.”

“Revolution” is a continuation of the storyline from “Do or Die” and concludes AleXa’s origin trilogy. This epic multi-genre song consists of Hip Hop, Latin and Symphonic moments to highlight the battle between AleXa and ZB Corporation. AleXa finds herself suspended in a dark liquid tank with sensors attached to her neck and arms at the ZB Corp headquarters. AleXa’s body is numb but her mind is conscious, processing all her past memories of her previous simulations. Suddenly, she awakens and breaks through to the surface. AleXa knows her mission is not complete. AleXa will do more than escape–she will lead an uprising.

On the DECOHERENCE EP, AleXa joined forces with world-famous composers who have created chart-topping songs for acts such as BTS and Red Velvet and producer Hwang Sungjin of RBW, label of Mamamoo and Oneus, who has contributed lyrics to continue to evolve her sound and grow her artistry.

AleXa will follow the EP’s release with promotional activities while planning her next moves.

###

About AleXa:

AleXa grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A lifelong dancer–having taken ballet, jazz, modern, hip-hop, lyrical and tap lessons when she was just 18 months old–AleXa was first drawn to K-Pop because of its strong performance identity.

AleXa’s professional career kicked off in 2016 when she was chosen out of 5,000 contestants as the next “Rising Legends: Season 2” winner, a title she earned after nearly one million fans determined the winner. Winning the top prize in the show in 2017 gave AleXa the opportunity to travel to Seoul, South Korea, to record her own song and film and a music video. She went on to star in “LEGENDARY: Making of a K-Pop Star,” a 2017 Viki Original series that followed her trip to Seoul to experience the K-Pop star treatment for the first time. AleXa went on to sign with Korean artist agency ZB Label in 2017. Once in Korea, AleXa beat out thousands of contestant hopefuls, and passed all three rounds of auditions for the third season of Mnet’s “PRODUCE” series, where the competition was especially fierce, given the explosive popularity of the franchise and the participation of popular Japanese artists. Sadly, her journey on the show came to an end during episode five, but AleXa had won the hearts of both Korean and Japanese fans alike.

AleXa’s debut blurs the line between reality and fiction–besides the creation of the artist itself, the debut of AleXa marks the birth of a new character. AleXa, created in a multiverse with every rendition of herself showing a different variation of the same existence, will show a range of themes and concepts through a large amount of content. AleXa can appear as everything, from the singer that we’ve already met, to a video game character, an animation, a reality show star, the girl next door or even the camera that is her namesake.

The DECOHERENCE track listing is as follows:

1. Villain

Lyrics: AleXa, Hwang Sungjin, Park Danbi
Composer: 8PEX (Isaac Han, Okiro, Aaron Kim), Megan Lee
Arrangement: 8PEX (Isaac Han, Okiro, Aaron Kim), Megan Lee

“Villain” combines urban, trap and EDM elements to create a unique, dynamic sound that differs from former tracks, putting even more focus on AleXa’s overflowing energy and powerful performance.

02. Burn Out

Lyrics: Hwang Sungjin (RBW), Moon Sully
Composer: Mingki (RBW), Jin Minho (RBW)
Arrangement: Mingki (RBW), Jin Minho (RBW)

With its straightforward lyrics and addictive hook “Burn Out” is a song about love that highlights AleXa’s powerful vocals.

03. Revolution

Lyricist: Hwang Sungjin (RBW), Kang Sangyeon, Jeon Sehee, AleXa
Composer: Greg Bonnick, Hayden Chapman, Anne Judith Stokke Wik, Ronny Svendsen, Nermin Harambasic (Dsign Music)
Arrangement: Greg Bonnick, Hayden Chapman, Anne Judith Stokke Wik, Ronny Svendsen, Nermin Harambasic (Dsign Music)

“Revolution” is the title track of AleXa’s 2nd EP DECOHERENCE.

The track features hip hop, Latin and symphonic elements and allows AleXa to show the unrivaled power of her performance. She also took part in writing the lyrics to satisfy her fans’ expectations. “Revolution” was created by a world-famous team of composers, who have written billboard charts sweeping songs for artists such as BTS and Red Velvet. Here they have come together to create a song tailored to AleXa.

04. Moon and Back

Lyrics: AleXa, Hwang Sungjin (RBW), Jeon Sehee
Composer: Davve (RBW), Jeong Hongrim

AleXa personally took part in writing the lyrics for “Moon and Back,” a song dedicated to her fans who have shown her unchanging love. The song was created using AleXa’s way of saying goodbye to her fans, ‘love to the moon and back.’

05. Revolution (English Version)

Lyrics: Anne Judith Stokke Wik, Ronny Svendsen, Nermin Harambasic (Dsign Music)
Composer: Greg Bonnick, Hayden Chapman, Anne Judith Stokke Wik, Ronny Svendsen, Nermin Harambasic (Dsign Music)
Arrangement: Greg Bonnick, Hayden Chapman, Anne Judith Stokke Wik, Ronny Svendsen, Nermin Harambasic (Dsign Music)

The English version of the title track of AleXa’s 2nd EP DECOHERENCE impresses with its powerful lyrics and is a gift to her international fans.

FOR PARANORMAL HALLOWEEN WEEKEND LIVE STREAM

A FEW LUCKY FANS WILL BE CHOSEN TO
SPEND THE NIGHT AT THE HOUSE OR PARTICIPATE VIA ZOOM IN THE WEEKEND’S EVENTS

$25 TICKET FOR PAY-PER-VIEW EVENT ALLOWS
THREE DAYS OF 24-HOUR VIRTUAL ACCESS TO HOUSE AND HALLOWEEN-THEMED PARANORMAL ACTIVITIES

TICKETS ON SALE TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20

Fans who are familiar with The Infamous American Horror Story Murder House will have the chance to be spooked this Halloween weekend via the first-ever live stream event from the notorious historical Los Angeles monument. Watch a preview of the livestream here.

This Halloween weekend, homeowners Dr Ernst von Schwarz and his wife Angela Oakenfold will open the doors to The Infamous American Horror Story Murder House for a three-day, 24-hour live event, which will kick off at dusk Thursday, October 29 before closing out at sunset Sunday November 1. Ticketing info is below.

Fans who buy tickets in the first week will get the chance to be chosen to physically spend the night in the basement; join the paranormal team on their exploration; or participate via Zoom to share their paranormal experiences and Halloween celebrations during the live stream. Special limited-edition t-shirts will be screen-printed by hand in the basement and hung there to dry during the event. Shirts can be purchased via the website and are available to ticketholders and non-ticketholders.

For the livestream event, The Murder House will reveal its ominous past via 15 cameras set up throughout the 10,000-square foot home streaming live throughout the entire weekend. Beyond the live stream, viewers will see daily programming with guest speakers joining the family and hosts remotely to discuss everything from exorcisms to near-death experiences, to how to protect oneself from demonic entities.

While the live stream is open to all via the ticketed event, The Murder House will open its doors to a few lucky ticket holders. Six fortunate (or unfortunate)–two per each of the three nights–Murder House fans in the terrifying basement all while being live streamed to the world (while a doctor monitors their vital signs and psychological condition). A few lucky fans will be chosen to be a guest during the first-ever seance or join a small group of ghost hunters in the house during the first-ever paranormal investigation. Enthusiastic fans can apply to be one of the few invited into the house for the weekend’s events by tagging The Murder House on social media.

The long-standing myth that the mansion is haunted has finally been confirmed by the current owners (Dr Ernst von Schwarz and Angela Oakenfold, pictured below) who say paranormal activity at the house is a day-to-day occurrence. In a sinister case of life imitating art, the family packed their bags and fled when they uncovered evidence of their home’s ghostly activity dating back to the 1930’s when the mansion was a convent for an order of Catholic nuns.

Dr Ernst von Schwarz and his wife Angela Oakenfold

Dr Ernst von Schwarz and Angela Oakenfold said they realized something was amiss before they even moved in. They received an email from the former owners handyman saying, “I will be out before May 1 and nothing will be left in the house except the ghosts.” Brushing it off, his words came back to haunt them on their very first night when they were awoken by a huge bang and dragging sound. Terrified after hearing it a third time, they called police only to be told–after hours of searching–that it was probably a ghost. It would not be the last time the Los Angeles Police Department would tell them that, even documenting it in official records as “ghost activity.”

Tickets go on sale for $25 on Tuesday, October 20 at www.themurderhouse.com. A portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to the Baby2Baby charity.

THE LAST To Issue Their Never-Before-Released Second Album ‘Look Again’ 11/20

DATE: OCTOBER 20, 2020

THE LAST
TO ISSUE THEIR NEVER-BEFORE-RELEASED SECOND ALBUM
‘LOOK AGAIN’
NOVEMBER 20 VIA HOUSE ARREST/FAT POSSUM RECORDS
ON CD, LP PLUS LIMITED EDITION 7,” AND ALL DIGITAL FORMATS

LOS ANGELES BAND SAYS THE NEWLY REMASTERED RECORDING
IS NOW THE ALBUM IT “WAS MEANT TO BE”
AND SHARE FIRST TRACK “LIES”

“When me and the boys in Bad Religion were teenagers coming up in the LA hardcore scene, The Last were like the big kids on the block. We looked up to them because they were already out there doing the things we hoped to do, playing the cool underground shows and parties we aspired to.  They were cool and they were trailblazers.”Brett Gurewitz, Bad Religion, 2020

Sometimes great bands have a rough go of it.

Consider THE LAST, the influential Los Angeles band who rose to the top of the city’s music scene—with bands like The Go-Go’s opening for them–and released their critically acclaimed album L.A. Explosion! in 1979 on Bomp Records. But rather than build on that momentum, which included shows with X and Black Flag, THE LASTJoe Nolte (Guitar, Vocals), Vitus Mataré (Keyboards, Flute, Vocals), Joe’s two brothers, Mike Nolte (Harmony Vocals) and David Nolte (Bass) and John Frank (Drums)–recorded a follow-up album that was doomed and shelved by the band. Now, the never-before-released, thought-to-be-lost-to-history album, LOOK AGAIN, will finally be available 40 years after it was originally recorded. The newly remastered 14-track album will be issued November 20 via House Arrest/Fat Possum Records on CD, LP plus limited edition 7″, and all digital formats. The band has shared the album’s first single Lies.”

Here’s the album pre-order link.

“We have for the first time unearthed the album that Look Again was meant to be,” says Joe Nolte. With their trademark organ chasing the trebly guitars, LOOK AGAIN is brimming with their dizzying brew of pop, punk, surf, garage, folk rock and psychedelia. Add in their gloriously off-kilter pop melodies/harmonies and restless lyrics about being young, vulnerable, and messed up, and you have a classic album that has been gloriously rescued by technology and tender loving care.

In 1980, THE LAST recorded the album on their own to control the process as much as possible, but what they came out of the studio with was completely sonically wrong, receiving zero offers from record companies (interestingly, the original copy of the album has been going for over $800 on Discogs). So how exactly did THE LAST bring LOOK AGAIN back to life?

As Vitus Mataré explains: “Those same master tapes have been carefully baked and transferred by John Strother at Penguin Recording in Los Angeles. Jonny Bell at Jazzcats Studio in Long Beach worked with the damaged files to restore the signals and performances that Joe and I knew were somewhere on those reels. There are no new overdubs and zero digital trickery. Guitar and organ tracks were sent to the same model amplifiers Joe and I used live back in the day and re-recorded. These are the original performances given a proper mix.”

For THE LAST, there is a happy ending with LOOK AGAIN. “We are unlikely to become Teen Idols anytime soon,” says Joe, “but we can at least vindicate our heritage somewhat.”

The track listing for the CD is below. Note: The vinyl LP contains the originally intended tracklist (1-12 below). For a limited time, there is an LP bundle (500 units) that comes with a bonus 7″ containing two non-LP tracks: “Weekend Girl” and “Fade to Black” available via The Last’s Bandcamp.

Here’s the track listing for LOOK AGAIN:

Side A

1) Lies
2) That’s Just Life
3) Obsession
4) Snake In The Grass
5) Should I Say A Word
6) Difference

Side B

1) Everyone’s A Holiday
2) Subway Song
3) Everybody Had It With You
4) Jungle Book
5) The Other Side
6) Look Again

“Bill Of Love” is the latest track from Harry Shearer’s ‘The Many Moods Of Donald Trump’

DATE: OCTOBER 16, 2020

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN

“THE SIMPSONS” AND “SPINAL TAP” STAR
HARRY SHEARER
RELEASES ELEVENTH SONG IN DONALD TRUMP SERIES:
“BILL OF LOVE”
FROM THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM
‘THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP’

Text, whiteboard Description automatically generated

I started out backing the birthers
Gave me a big head of steam
Took the escalator down to knock Mexicans
That made the liberals scream
I talk like a Manhattan mobster
But that’s not who I really am
I’m tough like an overcooked lobster
And soft like an overbaked yam
Deep down inside I’m half empty
Like a hand that’s too small for a glove
I’ve paid some bills in my lifetime
But I’m past due on the Bill Of Love
Past due on the Bill Of Love

#DonaldTrumpSong

LISTEN TO“BILL OF LOVE” HERE

“Bill Of Love” is the latest track from HARRY SHEARER’s THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP, the new album of bitingly satirical songs about the Trump presidency. It marks the eleventh song from the thirteen track collection that chronicles the president’s consistently capricious behaviour over the past four years. The song comes out at the end of a week that has seen a post-covid and steroid-fueled Trump return to the road for the final leg of the election campaign.

In the neo-classic rock number, SHEARER portrays the incumbent holding forth on his stance towards those displaced souls who wish to take up residency in the U.S. The song title refers to a phrase the president bestowed on a piece of legislation to reform the immigration laws. The bill never passed.

HARRY recently spoke to the DAILY BEAST about the album, read it here.

The full album of THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP is due out on October 30. SHEARER says of the album:

“America has never had a President so demanding of our continued attention. I decided to give him too much of mine.”

HARRY SHEARER has vocally portrayed every US president of his lifetime. Donald Trump is the third he has portrayed physically, having previously played Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan on screen.

With music and lyrics by HARRY SHEARER, “Bill Of Love” features SHEARER on lead vocal and CJ Vanston on backing vocals. Toshi Yanagi is on guitars, Toss Panos on drums and CJ Vanston on keyboards and all other instruments.

THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP album track listing is as follows

1. I Can’t Believe I’m Me

Available to watch here

As the medicated president huffs and puffs his way towards the final lap of the race to the White House, in I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M ME, Shearer has the incumbent blasting out a ‘brassy, craggy worst-of-Broadway anthem’ in praise of his not so private passion…himself

When Donald Trump first rode down that escalator, all most of us saw was his unabashed delight in himself.   The rest came later.

2. I Can’t Drive Anymore

To be released on October 2

3. Son-in-Law

Available to watch here

Shearer Trump performing an old style New Orleans number in praise his senior advisor, Jared Kushner. Always mentioned as one of Trump’s top aides, Jared Kushner has been given a portfolio that ranges from Middle-East peace to the pandemic.  His success rate speaks for itself.

4. Stormy Daniels

Available to listen to here

A lush string filled ode to passion, power and pay-off.

What good is hush money when it buys so little hush?

5. Bill of Love

To be released October 16

6. Executive Time

A languorous love of leisure ballad in which Shearer as Trump sings wistfully of those long periods of contemplation and nothingness between unnecessary briefings from so called ‘experts.

When does the President get the time to watch all the TV news? It’s a big section of his daily schedule.

7. I Never Knew Him

Available to listen to here

An eclectic musical mix in which Trump demonstrates that he might not have “one of the greatest memories of all time” as he purges his contact book and airbrushes his history of those who may be an impediment to his ratings.

A very famous guy has so many people claiming to be his friends or family.   It’s always important to clear the air.

8. Very Stable Genius

Available to listen to here

A power ballad in which Trump vaunts his own intellectual prowess combined with his calm and balanced disposition.

When a person refers to himself with that phrase once, it’s newsworthy.  When he does it repeatedly, it’s songworthy.

9. Number One Son

Available to listen to here

An electric chop suey, listing all Donald Jrs qualities and Trump’s new found love for the boy who serves him well.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the refrigerator.

10. Alabama

Available to listen to here

A southern rock tribute to the state that holds a special place in the President’s “heart”.

The trouble with official hurricane forecast maps is that they don’t often include Sharpie additions.   When it’s the state that gave your Presidential campaign its kickoff, a Sharpie warning is the least you can do.

11. COVID-180

Available to listen to here

Alternating stanzas of pumped-up disco and plaintive folk rock to represent the alternating “up” and “down” approaches taken to the pandemic by the President.

Emerson once said “Petty consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.”  Trump agrees, though he may not quite understand it.

12. Acquittal

Available to listen to here

A ‘prog rock revenge anthem’, the president basks in the sheer vitriolic joy on offer when its time to settle scores.

When you’re impeached, and survive, the natural human impulse is balls-out revenge.

13. He Lies

To be released October 23

TOMMY EMMANUEL, the acclaimed and Grammy-nominated acoustic guitarist, singer and songwriter, has today (October 9) released a newly recorded acoustic instrumental of John Lennon’s classic “Imagine” as a limited edition 7-inch vinyl single exclusive for independent retail on November 13 in the U.S. and December 18 internationally. A video for the Nashville-based artist’s stirring version of “Imagine” has also been released today, the same day Lennon would have been 80 years old. Watch the video–filmed in Nashville at Tunesmith Studios and directed by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard for Neighborhoods Apart—here:

“I want to say a big thank you and a big Happy Birthday to John Lennon,” says EMMANUEL. “Thank you John for all your mojo, for all your music and all the great memories that you’ve left us. To celebrate your birthday, I have recorded my version of “Imagine” and it’s only coming out on record. It’s gonna be a 7” vinyl and it’ll be available at your record store. So support your local record store because in these hard times, everybody needs to help each other. If you love John Lennon, like most of us do, and if you love the song “Imagine”—one of the greatest songs of peace ever written, then please go and get my version of ‘Imagine’ and play it for your children. Lots of Love.”

TOMMY recorded “Imagine” on March 5, 2020 in Nashville at Tunesmith Studios right before the pandemic set in. It was produced by Tommy Emmanuel, engineered by Brad Benge, mixed by Brad Benge & Tommy Emmanuel and mastered by Marc DeSisto. “Imagine,” an exclusive release to record stores for 2020, is being issued on Tommy’s label, CGP Sounds (ironically the catalog number is #9).  Only 1,000 copies of the vinyl single are being produced and each one is numbered. The B-side is a Tommy Emmanuel original song, “Since We Met,” that has never appeared on vinyl.

In other TOMMY news, he’ll perform two live-stream concerts on Saturday, November 7. For the first show, at 3:00 PM, he’ll play highlights from his It’s Never Too Late album along with other fan favorites and at the 8:00 PM show, he’ll visit highlights from his Endless Road album along with other fan favorites. For these two live-streams, TOMMY has partnered with Topeka Live to bring a front row concert experience to the audience: he’ll perform in front of giant video monitors where he can see the audience and they’ll be able to see him (they can clap in between songs and he will hear and interact with them).

For more information about the shows, go here.

ABOUT TOMMY EMMANUEL:

TOMMY EMMANUEL has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a CPG (Certified Guitar Player) by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. He’s piled up numerous accolades, including two Grammy Award nominationstwo ARIA Awards from the Australian Recording Industry Association (the Aussie equivalent of the Recording Academy); repeated honors in the Guitar Player magazine reader’s poll including a cover story for their August 2017 issue; a cover feature for Vintage Guitar’s July 2020 issue; and was Music Radar’s reader’s poll #1 winner of the Ten Best Acoustic Guitarists in The World (December 2019). A noted fingerstyle guitarist, EMMANUEL frequently threads three different parts simultaneously into his material, operating as a one-man band who handles the melody, the supporting chords and the bass all at once. His talents, which translate in any language, carry him to the far corners of the globe, but EMMANUEL never plays the same show twice, and he improvises big chunks of every date. “I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M ME”
FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM
‘THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP
I’m winning elections

Who says a Pres can’t rule by decree (not me!)
When Congress believes
You gotta believe
I can’t believe I’m me
Me
#DonaldTrumpSong
LISTEN TO “I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M ME” HERE
Hot on the heels of the announcement of his forthcoming album THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP, and following the release of the track Executive Time,” with the accompanying motion capture video, “The Simpsons” and “Spinal Tap” star Harry Shearer has just released the tenth song in the collection.
As the medicated president huffs and puffs his way towards the final lap of the race to the White House, in “I Can’t Believe I’m Me,” SHEARER has the incumbent blasting out a “brassy, craggy worst-of-Broadway anthem” in praise of his not-so-private passion…himself.
SHEARER says of the song that lists all the attributes that Trump finds most attractive in himself:
“When Donald Trump first rode down that escalator, all most of us saw was his unabashed delight in himself. The rest came later.”
SHEARER recently explained the album to the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, “We ended up having a president that, turns out, demands our daily, if not constant, attention. I decided to comply with his demands and I do pay attention.”
HARRY SHEARER has vocally portrayed every U.S. president of his lifetime. Donald Trump is the third he has portrayed physically, having previously played Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan on screen.
With music and lyrics by Harry Shearer, “I Can’t Believe I’m Me” features SHEARER on lead vocal, Wayne Bergeron and Chris Walden on trumpets, Jeff Driskill on saxes, Juliane Gralle and Chris Walden on trombones, Andrew Synowiec on guitar, Gregg Bissonette on drums and CJ Vanston on piano, bass and strings. The horn and string arrangement are by HARRY SHEARER, CJ Vanston and Chris Walden. THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP is produced by CJ Vanston on Twanky Records.
THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP
Available October 30 on CD, Digitally and Vinyl
Album details below:

“We are meant to uphold the promise of liberty for each other, and this song is written to be a reminder of that. The song begins with the memorable words at the Statue and is based on the words of ‘The New Colossus’ by Emma Lazarus and builds from there.”
Mary Scholz, 2020

Amidst a world-wide pandemic and turmoil brought on by racial injustice and a troubled America, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter-musician MARY SCHOLZ will release her song “Lady Liberty” on October 8 via the label KZZ, with a video to follow in the coming weeks. It marks the first single in her partnership with Blue Élan records co-founder, Kirk Pasich, and the affiliated music production company, KZZ.

Inspired to write “Lady Liberty” from the perspective of one of the most iconic American images, the Statue of Liberty, SCHOLZ says the ballad reflects “the broader aches of our modern world, including the human rights transgressions that are the American inheritance.” Her compelling vocals soar in a beautiful and spacious folk setting.

“I was at home, in Los Angeles–my lyric journal tells me it was June 23, 2020,” MARY says of the inception of the song. “I couldn’t get the images of protests out of my head, the pictures of children in cages on the boarder, the feeling of being in the crowd holding signs and calling out for equality, equity, and justice, remembering where I was when marriage equality passed…and I started thinking about Lady Liberty, holding her hand up to light the way for immigrants and people from all places. I recalled a fragment of the message, but I wanted to know exactly what was inscribed there at the statue, what exactly she was meant to represent…and I was so moved by the words, I picked up my guitar, started playing, and began singing them.

“I was so inspired,” continues MARY, “by Emma Lazarus’ words, her own ideas of what Lady Liberty might say, that I began a continuation of them, beginning with ‘Give them rest, and give them more.’ Each verse ends with a version of that statement, recognition that each of these groups of people have been fighting for a long time, and almost like a prayer, calling for reprieve and relief, before they pick up the fight for another day. I was needing to write a piece of this nature, on these topics, and part of me was held back by ‘who am I to say all of these things?’

She elaborates: “At first, writing from her [the statue’s] point of view gave me permission, and a platform from which to explore a greater overview of the people that live on this land. The original poem expressed what I so deeply wish that I could do–gather people into my arms and promise them a better future. And as I went on, I recognized that we are, each of us, extensions of this iconic image–she holds the lamp, she stands as a beacon of hope, but WE are the hope, we are the action that makes those things a reality. We are the ones to welcome and make a place for those seeking a better life, we are the ones standing up and speaking out, voting, creating legislation. That is part of the privilege and responsibility of living in the United States.”

To record “Lady Liberty,SCHOLZ began the process in her “backyard, masked and in a far-away rehearsal with Ed Maxwell, who has played upright bass on my music for the past few years (and on my last record),” after which she recorded a guide guitar and vocal track at home. From there, she explains, “What you’re hearing is as true a representation of the times as the lyrics are–a quarantined production. Each musician recorded in their individual home studios, beginning with my guide guitar and vocal tracks. Some home studios were already up and running, pre-Covid, and some were results of making it work during this pandemic. Before we mixed, I re-recorded my guitar and lead vocal at ElectroSound Studios, where they have a great Covid-Safe setup. The song was also mixed there, by Jason Hiller, and mastered overseas by Lazerus–Voice of the Silence.”

On “Lady Liberty, SCHOLZ plays acoustic guitar, sings lead and some background vocals; she’s joined by Matt Musty (Train, Grace Potter) on drums and percussion, Zachary Ross (Heather Anne Lomax, Janiva Magness) who co-produced the track and plays electric guitar, Chris Joyner (Jason Mraz, Heart) on organ, Ed Maxwell (Shelby Lynne, Meiko) on upright bass, Malynda Hale and Sarah Ault (front women themselves) on vocals. It was mixed by Jason Hiller (Maesa, Kyle McNeil), and mastered by Lazerus–Voice of the Silence (Donald Fagen, Stevie Wonder).

“It was a lot trickier, approaching recording in fully virtual setups, on a brand-new song that had never been performed, and felt so weighted,” MARY says. “It definitely was an exercise in creative communication, for me. Each individual musician recorded at home, so it was a lengthier process than normal. We started with my guide guitar/vocal track, and sent it off for drums, from the wonderful Matt Musty. Once they were worked out and in place (three separate drum tracks, two kits and additional cymbals and percussion), it was off to Ed Maxwell for his upright bass magic. Chris Joyner gave us the tone of sacred mission in his organ part, Zachary Ross, my coproducer on this song, brought a beautiful counterpart to my vocal, on his electric guitar. I had written a preliminary vocal arrangement that went out to Malynda Hale and Sarah Ault, and with some virtual collaboration–the three of us make up the choral landscape you hear. The only thing not recorded in a home studio, was my final guitar and vocal track, which we did at ElectroSound Studio’s Covid-Safe space. Jason Hiller also mixed the song there, with Lazerus–Voice of the Silence mastering in Norway. Every person involved really brought their heart and soul along with their talent, and I am so moved to hear their voices raising with mine, and so grateful for their artistic input.”

“Lady Liberty” follows the release of MARY’s last single “The Mother Song: Wild Womxn.” That track saw SCHOLZ push her boundaries even further, telling a profound story of womanhood that is at once personal and utterly universal.

About Mary Scholz:

Growing up, Mary had a deep reverence for music. She was always drawn to the spiritual resonance of dusty church organs and captivated by the lyricism of seventies sweethearts like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. She grew up dancing, playing both piano and flute, and came to the guitar later, as a teenager. She went on to earn a BFA from the University of the Arts. But just as she would sing, years later, that she “knew about California,” she always knew her voice would be her primary instrument. On the road, she would also deepen her relationship to the guitar and begin a more nuanced level of exploration.

Mary Scholz’s stunning voice and evocative songwriting have made her a live circuit favorite for over a decade. The Philadelphia native has toured internationally, forging a personal connection with her audience every time she takes the stage. Today, the artist is based in Los Angeles, where her unique brand of gritty folk-charm has helped her make her mark.

Much of Scholz’s material considers how transitions color the human experience, as well as the side effects of love and loss. Her 2014 release, The Girl You Thought You Knew explores the bittersweetness of separation. The album includes the HMMA-nominated song, “Bridges We Burn.” In 2017, Mary followed up with another breakout record, California. The album was recorded live in one room, to an Ampex 8-track tape machine. It was also the artist’s first vinyl pressing. California marked a turning point in Mary’s work and led to her partnership with Blue Élan records.

To date, Mary has seven studio releases and various singles available on all major platforms and plans to release more this year. Though her music has shapeshifted through the years, she continues to espouse the same message of love, hope, and personal empowerment. In her words, “It doesn’t always have to be a love song. Sometimes it’s about building a world that we can all feel loved in.”
