Ahmet Zappa’s Monsterfoot Productions Acquires Rights To Classic Weird-Ohs Monster Hot Rod Model Kits

DATE: NOVEMBER 23, 2020

AHMET ZAPPA’S
MONSTERFOOT PRODUCTIONS
REVS UP DEVELOPMENT FOR
CLASSIC DRAG RACING MONSTER TOY LINE
WEIRD-OHS

AHMET ZAPPA’s L.A.-based entertainment company, Monsterfoot Productions, has acquired the rights to develop and create new shows and media based on the classic Weird-Ohs monster hot rod model kits of the 1960’s.

Weird-Ohs is the brainchild of William “Bill” Campbell, who in the early ‘60s set out to design a wild cast of ‘monsters in hot rods’ along the lines of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s designs. The Hawk Model Company released the first line of Weird-Ohs based on Campbell’s designs in 1963 spawning a hit model toy line with licenses extending from board games, masks, trading cards, records, puzzles, lunch boxes and action figures to an animated series which aired on Fox Family in 2000.

Zappa’s Monsterfoot Productions is no stranger to the kids’ entertainment space having conceived the story and both developed and produced the feature film “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” for Walt Disney Pictures, as well as created the popular “Star Darlings” franchise for Disney Channel.

“This is a dream come true for me,” AHMET ZAPPA says. “I’ve been a fan of Bill Campbell’s work my entire life. In fact, I was inspired to call my company Monsterfoot because of artists like Bill. Weird-Ohs combines two things I love: monsters and hot rods. What’s better than that?”

The licensing agency responsible for brokering the deal between Zappa and current owner of Weird-Ohs, J. Lloyd International is Toronto-based, MLGPC.

“There is no one on this earth more well suited to develop entertainment for the Weird-Ohs brand than Ahmet Zappa and the talented team at Monsterfoot. I have no doubt that Ahmet’s creative is going to blow people’s minds!” Michael Goodman, MLGPC founder and CEO said.

Ahmet Zappa is an entrepreneur, New York Times best-selling author, film and television screenwriter, director, producer, musician, inventor and the radio talk show host of “Rocktails” on SiriusXM. His projects have touched the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world making him the perfect person to bring Weird-Ohs back into the spotlight.

MLGPC is a toy and entertainment licensing agency best known for bringing Fugglers to market with the help of Spin Master and currently represents a slew of new and classic toy lines like Werepups, Big Wheel, Robo Force, Power Lords, Great Garloo, Marx Toys and several others. In addition to representing toy and game properties, MLGPC currently handles the licensing for Troma Entertainment (The Toxic Avenger, Toxic Crusaders & Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D.).

DEAD ROCK WEST Share Official Alternate Video For “Revolution In The Garden”—Video Directed By Henry Mortensen

DEAD ROCK WEST
SHARE OFFICIAL ALTERNATE VIDEO FOR
REVOLUTION IN THE GARDEN

VIDEO DIRECTED BY HENRY MORTENSEN,
THE SON OF EXENE CERVENKA OF X
AND ACTOR VIGGO MORTENSEN

Acclaimed Los Angeles-based band DEAD ROCK WEST–led by vocalist Cindy Wasserman and singer-guitarist Frank Lee Drennen—today (November 23) have shared the official alternative video to their politically charged song “Revolution In The Garden” (Blackbird Record Label). It was directed by Henry Mortensen, the son of Exene Cervenka of X and actor Viggo Mortensen. Watch the video here. Glide Magazine premiered the video November 20, writing that the band never let their boots down and their new single “Revolution in the Garden” is equally poignant, resilient, and powerful. The band combines absolute rockish thunder and a punkish raw noir that mixes shades of Patti Smith with The Germs.”

Henry Mortensen directed and shot the video between northern Idaho, Denmark, the Thousand Islands region of New York, the wilds of Yosemite and finally the sun-dappled ocean breeze of Venice, California, mixing images of the Garden of America with the cartoon influences of an American Youth past. The animation of the song’s chorus became a collaborative effort with all hands on deck, including Kelli Mayo of Skating Polly, Louis Perez III and even Exene Cervenka whose handwritten artworks are all seen in the video. The hand of Viggo Mortensen also appears; Henry’s father signed on for a guest spot pushing a stick around in frame. We are told that his hand was paid scale. It all was in an effort to fulfill Henry’s vision for the film, which was of a true garden, its defenders, of justice and hope, even in the face of intense conflict.

The first video for “Revolution In The Garden” was premiered via American Songwriter (October 21) with a piece by Paul Zollo who noted that “the new passionately incendiary single by the acclaimed Americana-plus band Dead Rock West, led by Frank Lee Drennen and Cindy Wasserman…is a great song and remarkable record, expansively produced by David J Carpenter, and delivered with urgency by Frank and Cindy together, bringing back the dual spirit of John Doe and Exene in X.”

“Revolution In The Garden” marks a potent new sound for Dead Rock West whose 2017 album More Love was produced by punk rock legend John Doe of X and who’ve toured with X, Dave & Phil Alvin, and Peter Case. The band’s line-up is rounded out by Geoff Pearlman (lead guitar), David J Carpenter (lead bass guitar) and Phil Parlapiano (lead piano + keys). On the new song, they’re joined by Matt Lynott of The White Buffalo on lead drums, indie artist Patrick Dennis (lead percussion) and The Section Quartet (strings). “Revolution In The Garden” is sonically propulsive and lyrically a powerful call-to-action with lines like “The voice in our head/The voice on the tube/The voice tellin’ us/We’re all gonna lose.” Read the press release here about the song’s release and lyric video.

The song was written by Drennen and indie rock artist Patrick Dennis 30 years ago when they played in a duo called The Homer Gunns from Leucadia, CA near San Diego. All of these years later, “Revolution In The Garden” feels more timely than ever.

ABOUT TOMMY EMMANUEL:

TOMMY EMMANUEL has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a CPG (Certified Guitar Player) by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. He’s piled up numerous accolades, including two Grammy Award nominationstwo ARIA Awards from the Australian Recording Industry Association (the Aussie equivalent of the Recording Academy); repeated honors in the Guitar Player magazine reader’s poll including a cover story for their August 2017 issue; a cover feature for Vintage Guitar’s July 2020 issue; and was Music Radar’s reader’s poll #1 winner of the Ten Best Acoustic Guitarists in The World (December 2019). A noted fingerstyle guitarist, EMMANUEL frequently threads three different parts simultaneously into his material, operating as a one-man band who handles the melody, the supporting chords and the bass all at once. His talents, which translate in any language, carry him to the far corners of the globe, but EMMANUEL never plays the same show twice, and he improvises big chunks of every date. That leaves him open to those technical imperfections, though they also provide some of the humanity to an other-worldly talent. On May 8, 2020, he released a newly recorded career-spanning double album, THE BEST OF TOMMYSONGS, via CGP Sounds/Cruzen Street Records). Watch the album trailer here which focuses on TOMMY’s unique ability to tell stories without words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SOQEMWYAQ4&feature=youtu.be

“America–Live at the London Palladium” celebrates 50 years of great music from the perennial classic-rock band who were formed in England in 1970 with founding members Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell along with former band mate Dan Peek. They met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song “A Horse With No Name.” From their formative years, AMERICA has been a band capable of transcending borders with its uplifting music and positive message. Embracing a rainbow of divergent cultures, their audience continues to grow, comprising a loyal legion of first, second and third generation fans, all bearing testament to the group’s enduring appeal. “America–Live at the London Palladium” is packed with their timeless smash hits—including “A Horse With No Name,” “I Need You,” “Sister Golden Hair,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross the River,” “Tin Man” and many others—as well as deep album cuts that underline the band’s prowess and vision.

AMERICA have also been celebrating their 50th anniversary with a newly recorded song, “Remembering.” It’s featured on the August 28, 2020 release of their ultimate 8-disc anniversary box set HALF CENTURY (America Records). Watch the lyric video here which premiered (8/19) via Ultimate Classic Rock. Listen to “Remembering” here.

The song, written by BECKLEY, is classic AMERICA: harmony-rich rock, mixed with ringing guitars and pop smarts, with a compelling soul-searching lyric. “After 50 years together, this song is about the time spent looking back rather than looking forward…so much to be grateful for,” says BECKLEY, who produced and mixed the song with Jeff Larson. “Remembering” will also appear on AMERICA’s next studio album in 2021.

Watch the promotional film.

HALF CENTURY was produced for release and compiled by Jeff Larson for America Archives. It contains CD’s of rare archival studio recordings consisting of alternate mixes, demos and rehearsals, including several previously unreleased tracks ranging from 1970 – 2000. Along with the re-mastered Bremen 1973 in-studio performance and two CD’s of radio interviews providing an audio overview of the band’s career, along with a DVD of Super 8 “Home Movies” (1972-1975) to give fans a behind the scenes look at the early years of the legendary and enduring band. Q&A WITH GERRY BECKLEY AND DEWEY BUNNELL OF AMERICA
ABOUT THEIR CONCERT SPECIAL
“AMERICA–LIVE AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM”

America’s performance at the London Palladium was a particularly strong one. Listening to the music and viewing the performance, one can sense that magic was truly in the air. What are your overall impressions about the performance and how it was personally meaningful for you?

Gerry Beckley: Anyone who knows our history as a band knows that London is where we got started. Although we’ve played London countless of times since 1970, we’ve never played the Palladium. It was a true honor to finally have the chance and it was a total gift that the stars aligned for us to make the video recording.

Dewey Bunnell: The band had been really working hard on the road and the shows had been going very well, so we felt good about the trip to England for this one. And we were prepared for the filming process. For Gerry and I, it was particularly special since the band formed in London and we had family still there who would be attending along with old friends from the 70’s. We had never played the London Palladium before which made the performance that much more meaningful and I felt like we delivered our best that night.

England is pivotal to America since the band was formed there, and of course George Martin produced your fourth album and then six more albums. Can you talk a little bit about this British connection and how it’s intrinsically woven into your music?

Dewey: Looking back, I realize what a special experience it was to be young Americans living in London at a pivotal time in music history in the late 60’s. We spent a lot of time seeing shows around London and meeting people that added to our evolution in the beginning. When George joined the team in 1974, it only solidified that strong connection and began a great relationship for the next 7 albums and the rest of our lives.

Gerry: As I mentioned, London is a place very dear to our hearts. As often as we’ve been bundled into the “West coast sound” group of artists, I’ve always thought of us as a mid-Atlantic band. Certainly my love of all things having to do with the British invasion in the 60’s carved that in stone from an early age. To have the opportunity to work with George Martin in the middle of our journey was an immeasurable bonus.

The Palladium show featured an absolutely killer set list with all the hits and deep cuts too. Are there any secrets in creating the ultimate set list, including the order in which the songs are performed, that will satisfy both longtime fans and newer ones, not to mention you yourselves as musicians?

Gerry: Our set has been built and refined over these 50 years of touring. We do make changes from year to year but they are subtle and hopefully don’t damage what we have worked so hard to construct.

Dewey: To begin with, our current band is incredibly talented including longtime bassist Rich Campbell along with Ryland Steen and Steve Fekete on drums and lead guitar respectively. They bring their own unique energy to the arrangements that needs to be seen and heard. The set itself has evolved over recent years with the obvious need to play the most familiar songs at the core, but it’s important to us that we pace the set and tie it together with less familiar songs that add different dynamics to the show. At the end of that night I think we delivered our best and had as much fun as the audience!

HARRY SHEARER Releases Full Donald Trump Album: ‘The Many Moods Of Donald Trump’ Today

DATE: OCTOBER 30, 2020

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN

“THE SIMPSONS” AND “SPINAL TAP” STAR
HARRY SHEARER
RELEASES FULL DONALD TRUMP ALBUM:
‘THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP’

A person wearing a suit and tie Description automatically generated

FULL ALBUM AVAILABLE THIS
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30
JUST FOUR DAYS BEFORE U.S. GOES TO THE POLLS

“Harry Shearer is one of the great comic geniuses of our time.”
–Roger Friedman, Showbiz 411

“Harry Shearer creates comedy gold with The Many Moods of Donald Trump…”
Noise 11 (Australia)

“Possibly the most horrifying thing I have ever seen…”
Louis Chilton, The Independent (UK)

“Shearer’s record is undoubtedly one of the most unexpected, but most welcome additions to this year.”
Rolling Stone Australia

Throughout this summer and autumn, “The Simpsons” and “Spinal Tap” star, HARRY SHEARER, in the guise of Donald Trump, has been releasing a song a week via YouTube. This Friday (October 30) sees the culmination of this endeavor with the release of a full album of thirteen bitingly satirical songs inspired by the mercurial and often bizarre performance of the current president of the United States throughout his time in office.

“America has never had a President so demanding of our continued attention. I decided to give him too much of mine.”
–Harry Shearer

Featuring SHEARER on vocals, supported by line-up of world class musicians, THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP takes the listener on a journey of musical styles from old style New Orleans to neo classic rock, southern rock, pumped up disco and much much more, to reflect the ever-changing temperament of a presidency like none other seen before.

Accompanying the album are two ground-breaking motion-capture videos that portray Donald Trump at his most absurd:

In Son In Law Trump sings his way from his desk in the Oval Office to the press corps on The White House lawn, whilst lionizing his senior advisor and husband of his daughter, Jared Kushner.

In Executive Time the president is in ‘do not disturb’ mode as he watches his flat screen, fine tunes his golf swing, practices his signature, stares moodily through his window and does all the other things befitting the most powerful man in the world as he goes about his daily business.

HARRY SHEARER has vocally portrayed every U.S. president of his lifetime. Donald Trump is the third he has portrayed physically, having previously played Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan on screen.

The Many Moods of Donald Trump is produced by CJ Vanston on Twanky Records.
Digital album and CD available here

and here

Vinyl album available November 13

The full track listing is as follows:

1. I Can’t Believe I’m Me
Available to listen to here

As the medicated president huffs and puffs his way towards the final lap of the race to the White House, in “I Can’t Believe I’m Me,” Shearer has the incumbent blasting out a ‘brassy, craggy worst-of-Broadway anthem’ in praise of his not so private passion…himself

When Donald Trump first rode down that escalator, all most of us saw was his unabashed delight in himself. The rest came later.

Music and lyrics by Harry Shearer
Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
Piano: CJ Vanston
Drums: Gregg Bissonette
Strings, bass, trumpet and string arrangement: CJ Vanston

5.Bill of Love

Available to listen to here

In the neo-classic rock number, Shearer portrays the incumbent holding forth on his stance towards those displaced souls who wish to take up residency in the US. The song title refers to a phrase the President bestowed on a piece of legislation to reform the immigration laws.   The bill never passed.

Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
BG Vocals: CJ Vanston
Guitars: Toshi Yanagi
Drums: Toss Panos
Keyboards, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

6.Executive Time

Available to watch to here

A languorous love of leisure ballad in which Shearer as Trump sings wistfully of those long periods of contemplation and nothingness between unnecessary briefings from so called ‘experts.

When does the President get the time to watch all the TV news? It’s a big section of his daily schedule.

Music and lyrics by Harry Shearer
Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
Backing Vocals: Sharlotte Gibson, CJ Vanston
Drums: Toss Panos
Keyboards, Trombone, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

7.I Never Knew Him
Available to listen to here

An eclectic musical mix in which Trump demonstrates that he might not have “one of the greatest memories of all time” as he purges his contact book and airbrushes his history of those who may be an impediment to his ratings.

A very famous guy has so many people claiming to be his friends or family. It’s always important to clear the air.

Music and lyrics by Harry Shearer

Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
Backing Vocals: Sharlotte Gibson, CJ Vanston
Trumpet: Jim Gammon
Drums: Toss Panos
Keyboards, Trombone, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

8.Very Stable Genius
Available to listen to here

A power ballad in which Trump vaunts his own intellectual prowess combined with his calm and balanced disposition.

When a person refers to himself with that phrase once, it’s newsworthy. When he does it repeatedly, it’s songworthy.

Music and words by Harry Shearer
Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
BG Vocals: CJ Vanston
Guitars: Marc Bonilla
Drums: Toss Panos
Keyboards, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

9.Number One Son
Available to listen to here

Guitars: Marc Bonilla
Drums: Toss Panos
Keyboards, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

10.Alabama
Available to listen to here

A southern rock tribute to the state that holds a special place in the President’s “heart.”

The trouble with official hurricane forecast maps is that they don’t often include Sharpie additions.   When it’s the state that gave your Presidential campaign its kick-off, a Sharpie warning is the least you can do.

Music and lyrics by Harry Shearer
Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
BG Vocals: CJ Vanston
Harmonica: Howard Levy
Guitars: Mark Bonilla
Drums: Toss Panos
Keyboards, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

11.COVID-180
Available to listen to here

Alternating stanzas of pumped-up disco and plaintive folk rock to represent the alternating “up” and “down” approaches taken to the pandemic by the President.

Emerson once said, “Petty consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.”  Trump agrees, though he may not quite understand it.

Music and words by Harry Shearer
Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
BG vocals: Sharlotte Gibson, CJ Vanston
Guitars: Marc Bonilla
Drums: Toss Panos
Piano, synths, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

12.Acquittal

Available to listen to here

A ‘prog rock revenge anthem,’ the president basks in the sheer vitriolic joy on offer when it’s time to settle scores.

When you’re impeached, and survive, the natural human impulse is balls-out revenge.

Music and lyrics by Harry Shearer
Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
Backing Vocals: Sharlotte Gibson, CJ Vanston
Guitars: Marc Bonilla
Drums: Toss Panos
Keyboards, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

13.He Lies
Available to listen to here

A ‘list song’ in the style of the late Leonard Cohen’s non-existent brother, Jim, detailing the litany of falsehoods propagated by The President since he stood on Capitol Hill in January 2017 in front of “the biggest audience in the history of inaugural speeches.”

Lead Vocal: Harry Shearer
Backing Vocals: Sharlotte Gibson, CJ Vanston
Drums: Toss Panos
Keyboards, flamenco guitar, all other instruments: CJ Vanston

TASH SULTANA today (October 29) announced the official release date for their forthcoming sophomore album TERRA FIRMA. The highly anticipated new body of work from TASH SULTANA is set for release on February 19, 2021 on Mom + Pop Music and is available to pre-order NOW.

With a title inspired by the need to slow down and re-ground TERRA FIRMA is the work of a more confident, dynamic and experienced musician. The manifestation of a period of self-reflection in which TASH slowed down to find time for surfing, studio, family, gardening and a healthy balance from the hectic touring lifestyle that defined their existence.

“I didn’t realize that I needed to create a space and home for myself to feel like a person again,” explains TASH. “I just went inward and found a really peaceful place and wrote an album, and I feel really happy with it.”

Returning to earth after the dizzying heights of success, TERRA FIRMA is the sound of a more content and grounded TASH. Spiritually, the album finds the artist reconnecting to their roots, reminding themselves who they are and what it means to be human. Musically however, its 14 tracks take root into far-reaching sonic territory.

From the previously released evocative “Greed” to the enthralling “Beyond The Pine,” TASH departs from looped and layered jams towards meditative combinations of soul, funk, RnB, folk, rock, hip hop–you name it. “It’s Aretha Franklin meets Bon Iver meets John Mayer meets whatever,” says TASH. “It’s recognizably Tash Sultana, but deeper and more nuanced.”

Almost every note on TERRA FIRMA was once again composed, arranged, performed, engineered and produced by TASH. But to kick-start a new era, the solo star–for the first time–opened themselves up to collaborators, starting with a 10-day writing session with fellow ARIA-winning Australian musician Matt Corby and producer Dann Hume (Courtney Barnett, Amy Shark, Angus & Julia Stone).

Matt was very helpful for me at the beginning of this process, because I was experiencing writers block,” TASH explains. Together, they crafted lead singles “Pretty Lady”–an infectious tune kicking around since TASH’s busking days–and “Greed.” “They only give a shit when you make it big,TASH sings in a soul-funk examination of the corrupting influence of wealth and fame.

Corby also assisted on the richly detailed “Beyond The Pine,” in which TASH intones “I need you to save me because I can’t save myself,” and “Crop Circles,” a rumination on death disguised by its smoky, minimal piano licks and horns. “I went full jazz on that one.”

In line with today’s announcement, TASH has teamed up with fast rising Melbourne artist Jerome Farah to deliver a soul powered new single Willow Treefilled with thundering trumpets and shimmering guitar lines.

“There ain’t no fast pass up the mountain and you’ve got to clock the hours in to achieve the things you want in life,” explains TASH. “You can’t just skip the entire middle section of your journey to try and rush to the finish line. Whatever that may be for you. There is no use comparing yourself to someone else’s success. It’s your time when it’s meant to be and it’s only meant to be if you get up day and night and strive for the things you want. No one’s going to serve it to you on a golden platter, you’ve got to get it yourself.”

TERRA FIRMA was made with a lot of effort but feels effortless. Its intoxicating grooves and hypnotic riffs are instantly inviting, but with depth that reveals its rewards the more you absorb it.

Forever thinking of future career steps, TASH has assembled a live band to bring the record to life on stage (whenever that’s safe to do so). “The new live show is everything the live show already was, plus three other people on the stage for a small section of the show,” TASH says. “And they’re already greasing the wheels to begin producing and mentoring other artists.

Keen to get back out on the road doing what they love, TASH has recently been announced as part of Great Southern Nights at The Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on Saturday 28 November.  For more information on this show, head HERE.

For TERRA FIRMA though, the goal seemed simple: to make music that comes from a place that’s real and from the heart. “Because if it does, you’ll never fuck up,” Tash reflects. “I just really wanted to like the art I was putting out… I just wanted to feel better, be better, perform better, play better, sing better. To be a better musician.”

“Lady Liberty”: MARY SCHOLZ Debuts Video Inspired By The Events Of 2020, Calls For Equality, Equity, And Justice

CALLS FOR EQUALITY, EQUITY, AND JUSTICE

When creating the video for her new song “Lady Liberty,” Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter-musician MARY SCHOLZ expanded on the song’s themes of racial injustice and a troubled America. The video, shot against amber waves of grain, features an inclusive group of individuals reflective of this country interpreting the song’s stirring lyrics in sign language. Watch the clip here or here.

“I started imagining with the song’s lyrics being told primarily through American Sign Language interpreters,” MARY SCHOLZ says “It’s so important to elevate accessibility to the handicapable communities, and in this case to make sure that the message could be received by the deaf community. They must be included in this fight for our country and our people. They are, just like everyone, vital pieces of the puzzle. And, just like the other groups mentioned in the song, often underserved. “

MARY continues, “I’ve always found the language beautiful, like a dance, and getting to see my words expressed in this way on set (and while I was editing), was a very emotional experience for me.”

In coming up for a concept for the video, MARY says: “I didn’t want to inundate listeners with more visuals of the harsh realities we’ve been witnessing. I wanted to create something that would give people hope. To make them feel connected to one another, and the greater goal of equality. To recognize that we are, all of us, extensions of this beacon of Liberty.”

“Lady Liberty” is sung from the perspective of one of the most iconic American images, the Statue of Liberty reflects “the broader aches of our modern world, including the human rights transgressions that are the American inheritance.” MARY’s compelling vocals soar in a beautiful and spacious folk setting.

The “Lady Liberty” track was released earlier this month via the label KZZ, and marks MARY’s first single in her partnership with Blue Élan records co-founder, Kirk Pasich, and the affiliated music production company, KZZ.

On “Lady Liberty, SCHOLZ plays acoustic guitar, sings lead and some background vocals; she’s joined by Matt Musty (Train, Grace Potter) on drums and percussion, Zachary Ross (Heather Anne Lomax, Janiva Magness) who co-produced the track and plays electric guitar, Chris Joyner (Jason Mraz, Heart) on organ, Ed Maxwell (Shelby Lynne, Meiko) on upright bass, Malynda Hale and Sarah Ault (front women themselves) on vocals. It was mixed by Jason Hiller (Maesa, Kyle McNeil), and mastered by Lazerus–Voice of the Silence (Donald Fagen, Stevie Wonder).

“Lady Liberty” follows the release of MARY’s last single “The Mother Song: Wild Womxn.” That track saw SCHOLZ push her boundaries even further, telling a profound story of womanhood that is at once personal and utterly universal.

About Mary Scholz:

Growing up, Mary had a deep reverence for music. She was always drawn to the spiritual resonance of dusty church organs and captivated by the lyricism of seventies sweethearts like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. She grew up dancing, playing both piano and flute, and came to the guitar later, as a teenager. She went on to earn a BFA from the University of the Arts. But just as she would sing, years later, that she “knew about California,” she always knew her voice would be her primary instrument. On the road, she would also deepen her relationship to the guitar and begin a more nuanced level of exploration.

Mary Scholz’s stunning voice and evocative songwriting have made her a live circuit favorite for over a decade. The Philadelphia native has toured internationally, forging a personal connection with her audience every time she takes the stage. Today, the artist is based in Los Angeles, where her unique brand of gritty folk-charm has helped her make her mark.

Much of Scholz’s material considers how transitions color the human experience, as well as the side effects of love and loss. Her 2014 release, The Girl You Thought You Knew explores the bittersweetness of separation. The album includes the HMMA-nominated song, “Bridges We Burn.” In 2017, Mary followed up with another breakout record, California. The album was recorded live in one room, to an Ampex 8-track tape machine. It was also the artist’s first vinyl pressing. California marked a turning point in Mary’s work and led to her partnership with Blue Élan records.

To date, Mary has seven studio releases and various singles available on all major platforms and plans to release more this year. Though her music has shapeshifted through the years, she continues to espouse the same message of love, hope, and personal empowerment. In her words, “It doesn’t always have to be a love song. Sometimes it’s about building a world that we can all feel loved in.”

DEAD ROCK WEST Releases Politically Charged Song And Video “Revolution In The Garden” Today 10/23

DATE: OCTOBER 23, 2020

DEAD ROCK WEST
TURN UP THE HEAT WITH
POLITICALLY CHARGED SONG AND VIDEO,
REVOLUTION IN THE GARDEN,”
OUT TODAY ON BLACKBIRD RECORD LABEL

Acclaimed Los Angeles-based band DEAD ROCK WEST, led by vocalist Cindy Wasserman and singer-guitarist Frank Lee Drennen, return today, October 23, with a politically charged song and video Revolution In The Gardenon Blackbird Record Label. The video was premiered October 21 via American Songwriter with a piece by Paul Zollo who noted that “the new passionately incendiary single by the acclaimed Americana-plus band Dead Rock West, led by Frank Lee Drennen and Cindy Wasserman…is a great song and remarkable record, expansively produced by David J Carpenter, and delivered with urgency by Frank and Cindy together, bringing back the dual spirit of John Doe and Exene in X.”

“Revolution In The Garden” is sonically propulsive and lyrically a powerful call-to-action with lines like “The voice in our head/The voice on the tube/The voice tellin’ us/We’re all gonna lose.” The video was directed and shot by Drennen in the Frogtown area of Los Angeles. Its quick-cut edits underline the urgency of the song which was written by Drennen and indie rock artist Patrick Dennis 30 years ago when they played in a duo called The Homer Gunns from Leucadia, CA near San Diego. “Revolution In The Garden” feels more timely than ever. The track was produced by David J Carpenter, mixed by Dave Way and mastered by Dave McNair.

DEAD ROCK WEST
Quotes About
“Revolution In The Garden”

Frank Drennen: We wanted something that sounds epic. Big as life. A sound that reflects the urgency of the lyrics. We wanted a big rock ‘n’ roll sound. We wanted to destroy the idea that Dead Rock West is merely a neat little Americana group from the West Coast.

Cindy Wasserman: I knew that we had to record it, but we had to figure out how to do it remotely because it was deep Covid. No one was meeting up, and none of us had seen each other since March. Geoff’s [Pearlman’s] riff really set us off on our path, and then Matt Lynott of White Buffalo stepped in to guest on drums. Phil [Parlapiano] brought these crazy keys in that took it somewhere else. And then we called Dave Way who is the mix master. We’d worked together on our album More Love so all we said to him was, “Pretend that you don’t know us when you mix it. The rest is up to you.”

Frank: This song was written 30 years ago by me and Patrick [Dennis] when we played in a duo called The Homer Gunns from Leucadia, CA near San Diego. A simple direct to DAT recording was produced by Dave Sharp from THE ALARM but never released. It was written in response to the Bob Dylan song “When the Ship Comes In,” except ours was a rolling 6/8 folk punk reaction to what the future looked like through our 20-something eyes.

During the time of lockdown here in L.A., I began sifting through boxes and boxes of home cassettes collected over the years and fell upon this song. Cindy insisted we recorded it because of the times we are in–strangely just like the times 30 years ago–only worse in some ways it seems. I said to David J Carpenter that I was into recording it only if we rocked it out. So that’s what we did! It gives me kind of that sonic propulsion The Who does. Cindy and I sang the words matter of factly with power but let the lyrics speak for themselves.

This is the first song we have recorded where nobody was in the same room at the same time (usually we’re all in the same room). So David J Carpenter became the producer and master hub of recorded activity and Cindy and I sent a guide track and then Dave [Carpenter] made a click track and sent that down to CHAOS Recorders in San Diego where Matt Lynott from the White Buffalo recorded his bad ass drums. From there, everyone recorded from their respective home studios.

David J Carpenter: One of the things that struck me most is the timeliness of the words. Although they were written about 30 years before, they seemed to be so incredibly dead-on to our situation at the time. Quite honestly, at the time I was listening to a lot of The Who music and when I heard the song, my thought was it was very folky. But I felt like I heard something bigger and more associated to a lot of music I was spending time listening to at the time. I don’t want to make too many references to The Who, but it was a big influence on this track and the way I felt like approaching it. The lyrics had a sense of classic “My Generation” level of feeling. I wanted try to bring that our musically. It ended up being very powerful.

Geoff Pearlman: I loved the fact that it has Frank’s raw punk energy behind it. Frank seems to write brilliant ballads or just brilliant tunes in general, but his punk side comes out often and this is one of those times. And I like that energy. I think we are living in crazy times, and our song seems to reflect what’s happening naturally. Everybody was feeling pretty aggressive.

Phil Parlapiano: I stayed away from acoustic instruments as this record was a little bit more electric-oriented, a little bit of a departure from things what we’ve done in the past. David Carpenter also had a few ideas in there with some of the synthesizer things he threw in that I elaborated upon. Then putting some piano on it. I was really thinking of Classic Rock from the late 70s, from a big English band around at the time it reminded me of (wink). Although the song itself does not remind me of that band at all.

Patrick Dennis: This song was written in thick of rock n roll boot camp for Frank Drennen and I. 30 years ago we were wide-eyed 20-year-old kids heaving the world onto our shoulders, sweating in a garage over two dueling acoustic guitars. Frank and I felt like we were watching the world head in precisely the wrong direction and so we vented. Hard. “Revolution In The Garden” was finished, performed, played live on radio, in clubs, in theaters, at hot dog stand openings, grand plans were made, a recording was produced by Dave Sharp (of THE ALARM), the band broke up and the song got buried in a box for the next 30 years. How were we to know when we were writing these words 30 years ago, how much more sadly timely they would be now in 2020?
