JEREMY SPENCER, former drummer and co-founding member of Five Finger Death Punch, has unleashed a new project stemmed from the darker corners of his psyche with the industrial-tinged gothic rock band PsychoSexual. Taking the persona of front man Devil Daddy, Spencer has created a dauntless soundscape for listeners that is equal parts horror and fantasy. In celebration of the macabre for Halloween, PsychoSexual have unveiled their new charmingly grim new single “I Wanna Be The Blood In Your Cut” with an anime-inspired music video to coincide with its chorus sung entirely in Japanese. The song, taken from the band’s debut full-length album TORCH THE FAITH, premiered yesterday (October 27) via Alternative Press who dubbed it as “deftly navigating the realms of industrial metal and gothic mystery.” Watch it below or streaming on YouTube here.

“‘I Wanna Be The Blood In Your Cut’ was something that came to me one night when I was having a goth moment, missing the sounds of Type O Negative, and even the nu-wave flavorings of Gary Numan,” recalls Spencer. “I felt like doing a dark, demented kind of love song, and I think that translates very well. As I was writing the lyrics, I was visualizing them coming to life via anime, which gave me the idea for not only the video, but to also sing a chorus in Japanese. I’ve always loved touring Japan, and the language has always fascinated me, so it all came together rather organically.”

PsychoSexual’s debut full-length album TORCH THE FAITH was co-produced by Spencer and Shawn McGhee (Drowning Pool) and is out now via Spencer’s 6eX Records. It debuted at #150 in Billboard’s Top Albums and in the Top 30 for the following lists:

“Lady Liberty”: MARY SCHOLZ Debuts Video Inspired By The Events Of 2020, Calls For Equality, Equity, And Justice

When creating the video for her new song “Lady Liberty,” Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter-musician MARY SCHOLZ expanded on the song’s themes of racial injustice and a troubled America. The video, shot against amber waves of grain, features an inclusive group of individuals reflective of this country interpreting the song’s stirring lyrics in sign language. “I started imagining with the song’s lyrics being told primarily through American Sign Language interpreters,” MARY SCHOLZ says “It’s so important to elevate accessibility to the handicapable communities, and in this case to make sure that the message could be received by the deaf community. They must be included in this fight for our country and our people. They are, just like everyone, vital pieces of the puzzle. And, just like the other groups mentioned in the song, often underserved. “

MARY continues, “I’ve always found the language beautiful, like a dance, and getting to see my words expressed in this way on set (and while I was editing), was a very emotional experience for me.”

In coming up for a concept for the video, MARY says: “I didn’t want to inundate listeners with more visuals of the harsh realities we’ve been witnessing. I wanted to create something that would give people hope. To make them feel connected to one another, and the greater goal of equality. To recognize that we are, all of us, extensions of this beacon of Liberty.”

“Lady Liberty” is sung from the perspective of one of the most iconic American images, the Statue of Liberty reflects “the broader aches of our modern world, including the human rights transgressions that are the American inheritance.” MARY’s compelling vocals soar in a beautiful and spacious folk setting.

The “Lady Liberty” track was released earlier this month via the label KZZ, and marks MARY’s first single in her partnership with Blue Élan records co-founder, Kirk Pasich, and the affiliated music production company, KZZ.

On “Lady Liberty,” SCHOLZ plays acoustic guitar, sings lead and some background vocals; she’s joined by Matt Musty (Train, Grace Potter) on drums and percussion, Zachary Ross (Heather Anne Lomax, Janiva Magness) who co-produced the track and plays electric guitar, Chris Joyner (Jason Mraz, Heart) on organ, Ed Maxwell (Shelby Lynne, Meiko) on upright bass, Malynda Hale and Sarah Ault (front women themselves) on vocals. It was mixed by Jason Hiller (Maesa, Kyle McNeil), and mastered by Lazerus–Voice of the Silence (Donald Fagen, Stevie Wonder).

“Lady Liberty” follows the release of MARY’s last single “The Mother Song: Wild Womxn.” That track saw SCHOLZ push her boundaries even further, telling a profound story of womanhood that is at once personal and utterly universal.

About Mary Scholz:

Growing up, Mary had a deep reverence for music. She was always drawn to the spiritual resonance of dusty church organs and captivated by the lyricism of seventies sweethearts like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. She grew up dancing, playing both piano and flute, and came to the guitar later, as a teenager. She went on to earn a BFA from the University of the Arts. But just as she would sing, years later, that she “knew about California,” she always knew her voice would be her primary instrument. On the road, she would also deepen her relationship to the guitar and begin a more nuanced level of exploration.

Mary Scholz’s stunning voice and evocative songwriting have made her a live circuit favorite for over a decade. The Philadelphia native has toured internationally, forging a personal connection with her audience every time she takes the stage. Today, the artist is based in Los Angeles, where her unique brand of gritty folk-charm has helped her make her mark.

Much of Scholz’s material considers how transitions color the human experience, as well as the side effects of love and loss. Her 2014 release, The Girl You Thought You Knew explores the bittersweetness of separation. The album includes the HMMA-nominated song, “Bridges We Burn.” In 2017, Mary followed up with another breakout record, California. The album was recorded live in one room, to an Ampex 8-track tape machine. It was also the artist’s first vinyl pressing. California marked a turning point in Mary’s work and led to her partnership with Blue Élan records.

To date, Mary has seven studio releases and various singles available on all major platforms and plans to release more this year. Though her music has shapeshifted through the years, she continues to espouse the same message of love, hope, and personal empowerment. In her words, “It doesn’t always have to be a love song. Sometimes it’s about building a world that we can all feel loved in.”

“We love Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers,” shares THE BLACK MOODS vocalist/guitarist JOSH KENNEDY. “They have affected every part of what we are as a band and as songwriters. I’m hard-pressed to find a song in their catalog I don’t like, but for some reason ‘I Need To Know’ sticks out for me. That song is a BAND song. You can hear that it takes each one of them to make it come alive. That’s why I love playing it so much–it really brings the band together. We’ve played it as part of our live shows for quite a while and had an absolute blast recording it in the studio. There will never be another band like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.”

Following the release of their sophomore full-length album SUNSHINE in May via Steelhorse Entertainment/The Fuel, THE BLACK MOODS made career history by landing their first-ever Top 20 Billboard Active Rock radio charting single with its catchy, effervescent title track “Sunshine” peaking at #16. With this week’s announcement that The Infamous American Horror Story Murder House will open to the public for the first time ever, homeowners Dr Ernst von Schwarz and his wife Angela Oakenfold have now revealed the list of participants for the three-day, 24-hour first-ever live stream event from the notorious historical Los Angeles monument. Kicking off at dusk Thursday, October 29 and closing out at sunset Sunday, November 1, The Murder House livestream event will feature 15 cameras set up throughout the 10,000-square foot home streaming live throughout the entire weekend.

Beyond The Murder House live stream, viewers will see daily programming (details below). While the live stream is open to all via the ticketed event, The Murder House will open its doors to a few lucky ticket holders. Six fortunate (or unfortunate)–two per each of the three nights–Murder House fans in the terrifying basement all while being live streamed to the world (while a doctor monitors their vital signs and psychological condition).

An initial outline of the weekend’s events is as follows:

Los Angeles-based acoustic guitarist-singer-songwriter IAN GOTHE spent much of his adolescence traveling across continents in search of a home. Born to an Armenian family in Iran, his family relocated to England before the revolution and he later made his way to the United States. Being able to experience music from his vast cultural upbringing influenced his eclectic style which fuses musical genres and language barriers alike. On his debut album MEMENTO—co-produced by IAN and Grammy-winning producer with engineer Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty) and released this past February via the California-based Blackbird Record Label—IAN pays tribute to these influences including a lively cover of “Liezah” by the revered British rock group The Coral. He has partnered with the UK-based site Americana-UK to premiere the song’s cinematic music video which was shot in multiple locations throughout Southern California. The music video is based on IAN’s “story of a modern-day Robin Hood,” and features actress + model Katie Shorey as Liezah while being directed by Prince Bagdasarian whose current film Abducted is airing now on Showtime, and his directorial debut feature film Abstraction has garnered various awards at festivals after its release in the U.S. by Breaking Glass Pictures in 2015. IAN GOTHE Q&A ABOUT THE “LIEZAH”
TRACK + VIDEO

What did you want the video to communicate?

IAN GOTHE: “This is the fifth video from the album. Just like the previous four, I wanted each to be different from the previous one. In this video, I didn’t want the focus to be on me–I wanted it to be on the main character, Liezah, for which actress Katie Shorey did a great job. I wanted the video to be entertaining, to tell a fun short story. So I wrote the story of a modern-day Robin Hood.”

Where was the video filmed?

“There were different residential properties utilized in Glendale, Montrose and La Crescenta. The nighttime driving footage was shot in Montrose, the laundromat footage was filmed in City of Sylmar and the outside city/horse footage was captured in the Acton.”

Any interesting anecdotes to relate during the making of the video?

“On the last day of filming, we were heading to Saddleback Butte State Park to capture some desert footage and possibly some footage at an abandoned gas station near the park. On our way there in a 1968 Firebird, the car stalled on us on the freeway and we were still about an hour and a half away from our destination. About ten minutes later while waiting for a tow truck, the car started again, and we got off the first exit to a safe location. The car was running now but we didn’t want to take the chance to drive to the desert and get stuck there, so instead of calling it a day, we said let’s see if we can find an interesting location near here that we can use. After driving in the area for about 15 minutes, we stopped in front of a barn that looked cool. We got out and I started playing/singing the song. What happened next was really cool–a few horses came down the hill and stood in front of me and started to intensely listen to the song, and we said that’s it! This is the location! And the horses ended up in the video. The car stalling on us was a happy accident.”

What led you to cover this song by the British group The Coral?

“Whenever I hear the song, it takes me back to the time when I lived in England. Reminds me of the good times I had there.”

What do you feel the song possesses that inspired you to do your own version?

“Well, I love the lyrical imagery of the song. Also just like me, I think at one point or another everyone has had a Liezah in their lives, a woman who was not particularly nice to them, but no matter what she did, you still love her.”

Your version of the song had beautiful production touches. Can you walk about what you feel producer Jim Scott added to the track?

“Yes, it was a pleasure working with Jim. It was Jim who asked me to play the electric sitar on this song. Another cool instrument that Jim had in his studio that we used on this song was a vintage marxophone. One more thing that I’m personally proud of in this video is the intro music that I played on the pedal harp.”

MEMENTO features performances by all-star musicians Derek Frank (Shania Twain, Gwen Stefani), Fernando Perdomo (Jakob Dylan, Fiona Apple), Tamir Barzilay (Macy Gray, Tal Wilkenfeld), and Sam Babayan (The Dirty Diamond).

The album’s leading single was a cover of The Doors’ “Spanish Caravan” premiered via Guitar Player magazine (10/30/19) and garnered praise from The Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger who said: “I love it! It’s tough to cover Doors songs because the originals are so iconic. But Ian wasn’t afraid to stick to the original format and did a great job of capturing the feel. There’s a new flamenco/rock movement happening now in Europe–maybe Ian will lead the way!”

Three additional singles were released during the campaign: his original track “Take Me Home,” which is sung entirely in Armenian, opening track “Andalusian Moondance” and “Blood On the Rooftops In Montrose.” The latter is IAN’s homage to Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett for which the intro to the song is from Hackett’s “Blood On The Rooftops,” from the Genesis album Wind & Wuthering, paired with an original piece by IAN.

Los Angeles-based heavy metal trio RUSTY EYE today (October 23) have unveiled their first new music in over six years with their sixth full-length album DISSECTING SHADOWS via Epoché Records/Blood Blast Distribution. The album highlights their definitive “Rust’n’Roll” sound which packs the essential elements of “the three M’s–Misfits, Motörhead, and Maiden” with its blend of prog, thrash, punk, blackened death and synthwave. The band have also shared the seductive horror-themed music video for its third single, “Hellbound Witch,” which premiered yesterday (October 22) via Cryptic Rock.

“Hellbound Witch” was filmed at the infamous Jumbo’s Clown Room strip club in Hollywood, CA with director Alejandro Ordonez (Raubtier Productions), who also did the same honors for their two previously premiered video singles: “This Is Permanent” (via Metal Injection, 8/27) and “Can’t Wait To Go To Hell” (via Decibel Magazine, 9/17). “Hellbound Witch” arrives just in time for Halloween as it follows the haunting tale of three ‘hell bound witches.’ Watch it streaming below or on YouTube here.

Acclaimed Los Angeles-based band DEAD ROCK WEST, led by vocalist Cindy Wasserman and singer-guitarist Frank Lee Drennen, return today, October 23, with a politically charged song and video “Revolution In The Garden” on Blackbird Record Label. The video was premiered October 21 via American Songwriter with a piece by Paul Zollo who noted that “the new passionately incendiary single by the acclaimed Americana-plus band Dead Rock West, led by Frank Lee Drennen and Cindy Wasserman…is a great song and remarkable record, expansively produced by David J Carpenter, and delivered with urgency by Frank and Cindy together, bringing back the dual spirit of John Doe and Exene in X.”

“Revolution In The Garden” marks a potent new sound for DEAD ROCK WEST whose 2017 album More Love was produced by punk rock legend John Doe of X and who’ve toured with X, Dave & Phil Alvin, and Peter Case. The band’s line-up is rounded out by Geoff Pearlman (lead guitar), David J Carpenter (lead bass guitar) and Phil Parlapiano (lead piano + keys). On the new song, they’re joined by Matt Lynott of The White Buffalo on lead drums, indie artist Patrick Dennis (lead percussion) and The Section Quartet (strings).

“Revolution In The Garden” is sonically propulsive and lyrically a powerful call-to-action with lines like “The voice in our head/The voice on the tube/The voice tellin’ us/We’re all gonna lose.” The video was directed and shot by Drennen in the Frogtown area of Los Angeles. Its quick-cut edits underline the urgency of the song which was written by Drennen and indie rock artist Patrick Dennis 30 years ago when they played in a duo called The Homer Gunns from Leucadia, CA near San Diego. “Revolution In The Garden” feels more timely than ever. The track was produced by David J Carpenter, mixed by Dave Way and mastered by Dave McNair.

Frank Drennen: We wanted something that sounds epic. Big as life. A sound that reflects the urgency of the lyrics. We wanted a big rock ‘n’ roll sound. We wanted to destroy the idea that Dead Rock West is merely a neat little Americana group from the West Coast.

Cindy Wasserman: I knew that we had to record it, but we had to figure out how to do it remotely because it was deep Covid. No one was meeting up, and none of us had seen each other since March. Geoff’s [Pearlman’s] riff really set us off on our path, and then Matt Lynott of White Buffalo stepped in to guest on drums. Phil [Parlapiano] brought these crazy keys in that took it somewhere else. And then we called Dave Way who is the mix master. We’d worked together on our album More Love so all we said to him was, “Pretend that you don’t know us when you mix it. The rest is up to you.”

Frank: This song was written 30 years ago by me and Patrick [Dennis] when we played in a duo called The Homer Gunns from Leucadia, CA near San Diego. A simple direct to DAT recording was produced by Dave Sharp from THE ALARM but never released. It was written in response to the Bob Dylan song “When the Ship Comes In,” except ours was a rolling 6/8 folk punk reaction to what the future looked like through our 20-something eyes.

During the time of lockdown here in L.A., I began sifting through boxes and boxes of home cassettes collected over the years and fell upon this song. Cindy insisted we recorded it because of the times we are in–strangely just like the times 30 years ago–only worse in some ways it seems. I said to David J Carpenter that I was into recording it only if we rocked it out. So that’s what we did! It gives me kind of that sonic propulsion The Who does. Cindy and I sang the words matter of factly with power but let the lyrics speak for themselves.

This is the first song we have recorded where nobody was in the same room at the same time (usually we’re all in the same room). So David J Carpenter became the producer and master hub of recorded activity and Cindy and I sent a guide track and then Dave [Carpenter] made a click track and sent that down to CHAOS Recorders in San Diego where Matt Lynott from the White Buffalo recorded his bad ass drums. From there, everyone recorded from their respective home studios.

David J Carpenter: One of the things that struck me most is the timeliness of the words. Although they were written about 30 years before, they seemed to be so incredibly dead-on to our situation at the time. Quite honestly, at the time I was listening to a lot of The Who music and when I heard the song, my thought was it was very folky. But I felt like I heard something bigger and more associated to a lot of music I was spending time listening to at the time. I don’t want to make too many references to The Who, but it was a big influence on this track and the way I felt like approaching it. The lyrics had a sense of classic “My Generation” level of feeling. I wanted try to bring that our musically. It ended up being very powerful.

Geoff Pearlman: I loved the fact that it has Frank’s raw punk energy behind it. Frank seems to write brilliant ballads or just brilliant tunes in general, but his punk side comes out often and this is one of those times. And I like that energy. I think we are living in crazy times, and our song seems to reflect what’s happening naturally. Everybody was feeling pretty aggressive.

Phil Parlapiano: I stayed away from acoustic instruments as this record was a little bit more electric-oriented, a little bit of a departure from things what we’ve done in the past. David Carpenter also had a few ideas in there with some of the synthesizer things he threw in that I elaborated upon. Then putting some piano on it. I was really thinking of Classic Rock from the late 70s, from a big English band around at the time it reminded me of (wink). Although the song itself does not remind me of that band at all.

Patrick Dennis: This song was written in thick of rock n roll boot camp for Frank Drennen and I. 30 years ago we were wide-eyed 20-year-old kids heaving the world onto our shoulders, sweating in a garage over two dueling acoustic guitars. Frank and I felt like we were watching the world head in precisely the wrong direction and so we vented. Hard. “Revolution In The Garden” was finished, performed, played live on radio, in clubs, in theaters, at hot dog stand openings, grand plans were made, a recording was produced by Dave Sharp (of THE ALARM), the band broke up and the song got buried in a box for the next 30 years. How were we to know when we were writing these words 30 years ago, how much more sadly timely they would be now in 2020?

As the race for the White House enters its final frenetic stage, today (October 23) HARRY SHEARER, the star of “The Simpsons” and “Spinal Tap,” unveils “He Lies,” the latest track from his forthcoming album, THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP. “He Lies” is the twelfth song from the thirteen track collection that chronicles the predictable unpredictability of Trump’s behaviour during his time in office.

Habit? Compulsion? Or just easier than checking? “He Lies” is a ‘list song’ in the style of the late Leonard Cohen’s non-existent brother, Jim, detailing the litany of falsehoods propagated by the president since he stood on Capitol Hill in January 2017 in front of “the biggest audience in the history of inaugural speeches.”

The full album of THE MANY MOODS OF DONALD TRUMP is due out on October 30. SHEARER says of it:

“America has never had a President so demanding of our continued attention. I decided to give him too much of mine.”

“He Lies” is the only song on the album in which HARRY SHEARER performs as himself. In the other twelve tracks he performs as Trump, having vocally portrayed every U.S. president of his lifetime.

With music and lyrics by HARRY SHEARER, “He Lies” features SHEARER on lead vocal with Sharlotte Gibson and CJ Vanston on backing vocals. Toss Panos is on drums and CJ Vanston on keyboards, flamenco guitar and all other instruments.

U.S. Born K-Pop Singer And Dancer AleXa Releases “Revolution” Single And Second EP ‘Decoherence’ Today

AleXa, the daughter of a Korean adoptee and raised as a small-town girl in Oklahoma, rediscovers her Korean roots by pursuing her dream of becoming a K-Pop star.

The new EP follows AleXa’s 2019 multilingual K-Pop debut single, the explosive “Bomb”; it received over five million views in one week and hit #7 on Billboard’s “World Digital Song Sales” chart. With more than 18 million views to date, AleXa’s “Bomb” was produced by renowned Swedish composers at EKKO Music Rights, the team behind hits by K-Pop mainstays Red Velvet, Twice, NCT and more. The song and video “Bomb” combine Brazilian Funk with electronic elements and Afrobeats choreography to create an exciting dance track that allows AleXa to showcase her powerful stage presence.

Next up for AleXa was her eight-track debut Do Or Die, which was helmed by a chart-topping team at one of the largest K-Pop song production houses and speaks with AleXa’s all-or-nothing attitude. The “Do Or Die” title track is a girl power anthem about facing your fears and [the ability to] overcome them,” says Moonshine, comprised of songwriters Ellen Berg Tollbom and Cazzi Opeia. “When you feel like you have no choice left but to fight for your life, you’re only in it to win it.” The music video for the “Do Or Die” title track is a grand scale production highlighted by action scenes and CGI.

With the EP’s newly released single and video, “Revolution” fans will see the finale to AleXa‘s three-part ground-breaking music video concept, an AI caught in a multiverse storyline (detailed in “Allegory of the Cave,” a hidden track on the physical copy of the new EP) which began with “Bomb,” was followed by “Do Or Die” and concludes with “Revolution.”

“Revolution” is a continuation of the storyline from “Do or Die” and concludes AleXa’s origin trilogy. This epic multi-genre song consists of Hip Hop, Latin and Symphonic moments to highlight the battle between AleXa and ZB Corporation. AleXa finds herself suspended in a dark liquid tank with sensors attached to her neck and arms at the ZB Corp headquarters. AleXa’s body is numb but her mind is conscious, processing all her past memories of her previous simulations. Suddenly, she awakens and breaks through to the surface. AleXa knows her mission is not complete. AleXa will do more than escape–she will lead an uprising.

On the DECOHERENCE EP, AleXa joined forces with world-famous composers who have created chart-topping songs for acts such as BTS and Red Velvet and producer Hwang Sungjin of RBW, label of Mamamoo and Oneus, who has contributed lyrics to continue to evolve her sound and grow her artistry.

AleXa will follow the EP’s release with promotional activities while planning her next moves.

About AleXa:

AleXa grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A lifelong dancer–having taken ballet, jazz, modern, hip-hop, lyrical and tap lessons when she was just 18 months old–AleXa was first drawn to K-Pop because of its strong performance identity.

AleXa’s professional career kicked off in 2016 when she was chosen out of 5,000 contestants as the next “Rising Legends: Season 2” winner, a title she earned after nearly one million fans determined the winner. Winning the top prize in the show in 2017 gave AleXa the opportunity to travel to Seoul, South Korea, to record her own song and film and a music video. She went on to star in “LEGENDARY: Making of a K-Pop Star,” a 2017 Viki Original series that followed her trip to Seoul to experience the K-Pop star treatment for the first time. AleXa went on to sign with Korean artist agency ZB Label in 2017. Once in Korea, AleXa beat out thousands of contestant hopefuls, and passed all three rounds of auditions for the third season of Mnet’s “PRODUCE” series, where the competition was especially fierce, given the explosive popularity of the franchise and the participation of popular Japanese artists. Sadly, her journey on the show came to an end during episode five, but AleXa had won the hearts of both Korean and Japanese fans alike.

AleXa’s debut blurs the line between reality and fiction–besides the creation of the artist itself, the debut of AleXa marks the birth of a new character. AleXa, created in a multiverse with every rendition of herself showing a different variation of the same existence, will show a range of themes and concepts through a large amount of content. AleXa can appear as everything, from the singer that we’ve already met, to a video game character, an animation, a reality show star, the girl next door or even the camera that is her namesake.
