20-year-old indie/alt-pop singer-songwriter KYLIE SPENCE has shared the video for her poignant new single “River”–taken from a forthcoming EP due later this year–with a stirring video filmed across Montana, where she resides. The video was premiered yesterday (August 18) via V13 who described the song as “highly relatable in nature” as it covers dealing with heartbreak. Watch the “River” music video streaming below and pre-save the track across digital platforms in advance of its release tomorrow, August 20 HERE.

“For ‘River,’ I really wanted to capture what being so desperately in love with somebody feels like, especially when the feelings are no longer mutual,” shares KYLIE. “Sometimes, it can feel so hopeless when you love someone so much and they don’t love you the way that you love them. I think we’ve all been there, and it sucks.”

Speaking on the music video, KYLIE says, “I obviously wanted to include as much of Montana as I could since this song was so heavily inspired by nature. The story follows me on a journey after getting into a fight with my partner and them leaving without me. I hitchhike my way around, and have flashbacks of the relationship throughout my journey, but start to feel like I don’t need them to be happy. Towards the end of the video, I see his truck, and all of the memories come back again, and I’m back to square one in a sense. I wanted the viewer to interpret the ending in whatever way made the most sense to them. Was I chasing him the whole time, or really trying to find myself? That’s up to you.”

KYLIE will celebrate the release by opening a sold-out show with REO SPEEDWAGON on August 21 at the Helena Civic Center in Helena, MT. She will then perform in Bozeman, MT on October 11 before heading for a mini-tour across California from October 20-24 including a stop in Los Angeles at The Hotel Café. Full dates are listed below, with tickets available now at www.kyliespence.com.

Hailing from a small town in Montana, KYLIE writes songs with a universal appeal that listeners of any age will relate to. For KYLIE, performing, writing, and composing are means of processing and releasing her thoughts and feelings. At a young age, her creativity began finding an audience at school talent shows, musicals, and eventually open mic nights. After saving up to buy a guitar and then teaching herself to play, she was writing one song a day by the eighth grade. KYLIE’s music can be described as deeply empathetic pop with universal appeal, speaking to difficult topics beyond her age. The self-aware girl next door who’s in tune with her emotions, KYLIE wants nothing more than for people to connect with her art. Many of her songs dive into topics that can be difficult to speak about openly. KYLIE is a true storyteller at heart with an innate gift to pen powerful lyrics and incorporate them into well-crafted, original songs, using her unique voice to do so.

KYLIE’s debut 2017 single “Lying Eyes” was immediately added to iTunes ‘Hot Tracks’ upon release and has since received over 300k Spotify streams. She has also released two cover tracks—Billie Eilish ft. Khalid’s “Lovely” and Lana Del Ray’s “Young And Beautiful”—which received airplay on Sirius XM’s The Coffee House station. Overall, KYLIE has received over 4 million Spotify streams, 595k YouTube views and over 112k Apple Music streams. She was last seen opening for Dennis Lloyd on his sold-out European and Israel tour in 2018.

D.D. VERNI & THE CADILLAC BAND today (August 18) unveil “Olivia…that’s Who!” the second single and video from their debut album LET’S RATTLE, due out September 17 (via MVD). As with the album’s lead single and video Cadillac Man,” the new single underlines the high-energy original swingin’ and rockin’ big-band sound from D.D. VERNI, the songwriter/founding member/bassist for heavy metal pioneers Overkill who’ve sold millions of records worldwide and have released 19 studio albums dating back to their 1985 debut album. Listen to the song, which D.D. wrote about his daughter Olivia, here and watch the quick moving video, comprised of storyboard illustrations, here. Pre-order the album here or pre-save the album here

“While the song is about my daughter, I think it speaks to anyone who has a bubbly outgoing spirited girl in their life,” says D.D. “It could be your mom, wife or girlfriend. And I think the drawings capture the spirit of the song. The song lyric says “There’s always enough love to go round” and I think that’s the spirit of the song and the drawings. It’s about how a girl like that in your life can brighten your day and make things always seem OK.” Read more quotes about the song and video below.

LET’S RATTLE is the result of VERNI’s longtime dream of recording a big band album, as his love for the sound dates back many years. The New Jersey-based artist began by writing a fantastic collection of soon-to-be big band classics. Next he recruited longtime Brian Setzer Orchestra upright bassist, John “Spazz” Hatton, to do horn arrangements and play upright bass, while bass player D.D. switched things up playing some guitar on the album. Then D.D. brought in the LA based horn section from Phat Cat Swinger to play the horns and added Brian Setzer Orchestra drummer and current Doobie Brothers member, Tony Pia. Add jazz pianist Dave Moscoe and Hot Rod guitarist Damian Bacci, and you have a star-studded line-up of big band greatness that made this album shake and swing.

With songs like “Cadillac Man,” “Shake It Swing It” and “Olivia…that’s Who!” the album features 13 tracks (nine originals and four covers), was produced by VERNI and mixed by Greg Reely (Coldplay, Sarah McLachlan, Overkill), and recorded in Los Angeles and New Jersey.

In addition, D.D. VERNI & THE CADILLAC BAND have confirmed their first-ever live show, Saturday, October 30 show at the Vogel (Count Basie Center for the Arts) in Red Bank, NJ, the same venue where they filmed the video for “Cadillac Man,” the album’s first single. Tickets are on sale now.

Q&A WITH D.D. VERNI ABOUT
THE “OLIVIA…THAT’S WHO!”: SINGLE + VIDEO

–For the “Olivia…that’s who!” video, what inspired you to have a video created with storyboard illustrations?

That was actually my wife Lisa. She thought a storyboard following the lyrics etc. would be a cool idea for a video for that song. I had worked on many projects with an illustrator named Gery Nible for years and she suggested I call him. So I reached out and he was very excited about the idea. We went back and forth on a bunch of ideas and character development, what people should look like and the style/tone for it. I would get sketches from Gery and I would send to Lisa and she would send to Olivia hahaha…so it was a fun project to work on. I really liked her storyboard idea, where it felt more like sketches rather than finished inked and color drawings. I am a comic book fan, as well as Pixar/Disney animated film fan. I have a ton of collectable toys and such from movies, so this was great chance to do a little of that with my own song. I had done an animated video a few records back and had so much fun doing it and this one was similar. Fun to see it come to life.

–How do you feel the video captures the spirit of the song?

While the song is about my daughter, I think it speaks to anyone who has a bubbly outgoing spirited girl in their life. It could be your mom, wife or girlfriend. And I think the drawings capture the spirit of the song. The song lyric says “There’s always enough love to go round” and I think that’s the spirit of the song and the drawings. It’s about how a girl like that in your life can brighten your day and make things always seem OK.

–Who directed the video and who did the illustrations?

The video was edited by Steven Bartashev who was the editor on the Cadillac Man video we just put out. I was really happy with how that turned out so I contacted him about doing this one as well. The illustrations were done by Gery Nible. As I said Gery is a friend who I have worked with on a bunch of projects before. We’ve done album art, t-shirts, all kinds of stuff. He has a similar DNA to mine as far as stuff we like and so the process of doing this was pretty easy. He really ran with the idea, I thought we could get by on a dozen or so drawings and I think it wound up more like 60+ . He even sent a video kind of walking us through it and his ideas which made it very easy to visualize what it would be like in the end.

–You’ve said that your second daughter Olivia told you: “‘where’s my song!’ and then on her 16th birthday I wrote and recorded “Olivia…that’s who!” What does Olivia think of her song and the video (if she’s seen it)?

She loves it! For years she would run around and tell people she has her own theme song. Now she has a video to go along with it.

PI JACOBS To Perform Saturday, August 28 Show At The Hotel Café

DATE: AUGUST 18, 2021

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN/MITCH SCHNEIDER

Pi Jacobs LA Show

AMERICANA ARTIST PI JACOBS
SET TO PERFORM
SATURDAY, AUGUST 28
AT HOTEL CAFÉ

SHOW FOLLOWS
AUGUST 13 RELEASE OF
NEW ALBUM
‘LIVE FROM MEMPHIS’
VIA BLACKBIRD RECORD LABEL

Acclaimed Americana singer, songwriter and musician PI JACOBS will perform a Saturday, August 28 show at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. This will mark the Los Angeles-based artist’s first show following the August 13 release of her latest album LIVE FROM MEMPHIS, her first album for the label and ninth overall, via Blackbird Record Label. Shows in Nashville (September 23 and 25), Washington DC (September 30), New York City (October 3) and her San Francisco hometown (October 15) are also on her concert itinerary.

LIVE FROM MEMPHIS peels back many layers of PI’s life and sensibility in both the songs and the story intro’s that she narrated for each song. The music on LIVE FROM MEMPHIS comes from PI’s live taping for Ditty TV, which was filmed without an audience. For the set list, she drew six songs from 2020’s Two Truths and a Lie and two others from 2017’s A Little Blue. But rather than using the between-songs banter intended for the viewing audience, she took a page from one of her favorite NPR podcasts and decided to share more of herself than ever before by narrating the songs with revealing intros.

An outstanding example of this is the new and third track “No Sin To Be Poor,” which is based on her own life growing up poor in Northern California. The song is accompanied by an imagery-rich animated video created by Turkish surreal artist Mertcan Mertbilek, who did the same honors for the album’s first release, First Thing Tomorrow.” Watch the “No Sin To Be Poor” video here, which was premiered by American Songwriter. Listen to the song here and the story intro here. Pre-order the album here.

With her blend of roots-rock swagger and storytelling soul, Pi Jacobs distinctively amplifies the concert experience on it places eight original songs alongside the self-narrated personal stories that shaped them. Recorded with a full band, the project offers a sincere and sometimes funny look at her formative years, her family relationships, and even a few lessons she’s learned along the way.

The LIVE FROM MEMPHIS track list is here.

Mainstream rock outfit POP EVIL have been forced to postpone upcoming dates on their current headlining tour across the U.S. due to vocalist Leigh Kakaty testing positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, forcing them to cancel their show on Sunday night in Denver. The band will reinstate their tour on Friday, August 27 in Virginia Beach at Elevation 27 and are currently working on rescheduling all cancelled dates following their last stop in Orlando. The band have also announced their stop on September 1 in Syracuse, NY at Westcott Theater has been cancelled by the venue and promoter.

The currently postponed dates are as follows:

August 17 – Des Moines, IA @ Wooly’s
August 18 – Fargo, ND @ Sanctuary Events Center
August 20 – Joliet, IL @ The Forge
August 21 – Nashville, TN @ Brooklyn Bowl
August 23 – Savannah, GA @ Victory North
August 24 – Asheville, NC @ Orange Peel
August 25 – Jacksonville, NC @ Hooligans

The band issued the following statement:
“To our Evilz, we always want to be fully transparent with our fans and the status of our shows. All of our band members and crew have been vaccinated prior to us starting tour. Yesterday, and again this morning, Leigh Kakaty tested positive for COVID-19.  Leigh wanted to make sure his test wasn’t a false positive before postponing any more shows. With his second positive test this afternoon, out of an abundance of caution, we will be postponing our shows and be back for our show in Virginia Beach on August 27. We are doing our best to move the following shows: Denver, CO (8/15), Des Moines, IA (8/17), Fargo, ND (8/18), Joliet, IL (8/20), Nashville, TN (8/21), Savannah, GA (8/23), Asheville, NC (8/24) and Jacksonville, NC (8/25) to the end of the tour. Leigh is already feeling much better and will be back on his feet in no time. We want to thank everyone for their continued support! See you soon.”

POP EVIL recently shared a lyric video for the latest single, “Survivor,” from their sixth full-length album VERSATILE, released earlier this year via Entertainment One (eONE), which is currently approaching a Top 10 position on Billboard’s Mainstream rock radio charts. Watch it streaming here: https://youtu.be/-B_MjXZ6wI4.

Survivor” follows previous album singles including their sixth overall #1 trackBreathe Again,Top 10 single Work,” and hard-hitting numbers “Set Me Free” and “Let The Chaos Reign.” Modern Drummer described the track by stating, “Opening with clean guitar chords and a relaxed but driving drum pocket, ‘Survivor’ immediately strikes a more personal tone, giving the listener time to ease into the song, before suddenly being dropped into a head-banging riff accompanied by furious screams, only to be released back into the clean and easy-going feel for the remainder of the song.”

THE THE, one of the most intriguing bands ever to emerge from England, today offer a preview of their upcoming album THE COMEBACK SPECIAL with the official live video for The Beat(en) Generation.” The album, due out October 29 in multiple audio as well as video formats, documents their triumphant 2018 Royal Albert Hall in London.

Originally featured on their Mind Bomb album in 1989, THE THE’s classic The Beat(en) Generation” now shines in a new light as Matt Johnson and band performed the song to a sold-out Royal Albert Hall nearly 30 years later. “The Beat(en) Generation” is now available as a single release on all streaming and download services.

The highlight of this multi-format release is an exquisitely designed 136-page art book, which tells the whole story behind THE COMEBACK SPECIAL with hundreds of behind-the-scenes photos, film stills, contributions and stories, as well as 6 discs including exclusive audio content, plus director Tim Pope’s film of the concert on both Blu-ray and DVD.

As another highlight of the new release, THE THE have also launched a variety of new exclusive merch items and bundles on the official album webstore: https://thethe.tmstor.es/

For a brand-new series of four exclusive THE THE prints, the band has teamed up with London’s Atom Gallery. Mark Perronet (print maker and co-owner of the gallery) had previously collaborated with Andy Dog, Matt Johnson’s late brother and designer of many of the group’s early sleeves. Utilising the old analogue technique of screenprinting, visual elements of The Comeback Special tour have been combined to create these vivid new designs. Each of these four new posters are hand-numbered, embossed with the THE THE logo and signed by Matt Johnson.

Performing live for the first time in 16 years with a headline appearance at Denmark’s Heartland Festival a few days before the Royal Albert Hall concert, the rejuvenated THE THE, which featured previous members James Eller on bass, DC Collard on keyboards and Earl Harvin on drums and new member Barrie Cadogan on guitar alongside Matt Johnson, would go on to play sold-out shows and make festival headline appearances across the globe throughout 2018.

“Part comeback, part requiem, all extraordinary”
– James Hall, The Telegraph (UK)

“Johnson’s great achievement is to have made a body of work that is completely original, yet flows smoothly into the slipstream of accessible, socially conscious alternative rock.”

– Will Hodgkinson, The Times (UK)

“Johnson retains a gravel-voiced gravitas, and his band are taut and kinetic on barbed missiles such as ‘Armageddon Days (are here again)’… THE THE really shouldn’t leave it 16 years until their next tour.”

– Ian Gittins, The Guardian (UK)

“THE THE sound very much like a band revitalized… Johnson may not have sung publicly for years, but there’s little doubt he’s been practising his scales in private.”

– Jeremy Allen, The Independent (UK)

LORNE BEHRMAN Shares First Single + Video, “When I Hit The Floor,” From NYC Rocker’s Debut Solo EP Due October 15

“WHEN I HIT THE FLOOR,”
FROM THE NYC ROCKER’S
DEBUT SOLO EP OF THE SAME NAME
DUE OCTOBER 15 ON SPAGHETTY TOWN RECORDS

“When I Hit The Floor” single artwork

“Real blood and guts rock and roll that bleeds with soul and redemption.”
Jesse Malin, 2021

NYC rocker LORNE BEHRMAN, the singer-songwriter-guitarist who previously played in The Dimestore Haloes, L.E.S. Stitches, The Dead Tricks and most recently The Sweet Things, today (August 12) shares his debut solo single + video, “When I Hit The Floor.”

The rocking-but-reflective “When I Hit The Floor”–a song about “substance abuse and hitting bottom,” says LORNE—is the first release from his debut solo EP of the same name, due October 15 on Spaghetty Town Records. Watch the video here, premiered yesterday by Glide, which praised LORNE’s “power chord ethos, cryptic electricity, and gritty voice,” adding: “The incisive songwriting stance Behrman takes on this unapologetic rocker holds nothing back with its blunt account of a hard-living past.” The single will be available tomorrow (August 13) at all streaming platforms.

The four-song EP When I Hit The Floor was produced by Matt Chiaravalle (Warren Zevon, Joe Bonamassa, Spacehog) at NYC’s Mercy Sound Studios and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Joe Lambert. Lorne played all the guitars, wrote all the songs, and sang all the leads. Joining him are drummer Hector Lopez (Alejandro Escovedo/The Sweet Things), keyboardist Rob Clores (Jesse Malin, Black Crowes, Alejandro Escovedo), and singer Dana Athens (Jane Lee Hooker).

The video for “When I Hit The Floor” was directed by David J Barron and set in Brooklyn, specifically the areas of Midwood, Kensington, and Bay Ridge. The video was shot on 9-minutes of film with a Bolex H16 handheld camera from the 1970s.

Below are quotes from LORNE, the song’s lyrics and more info about the EP.

“When I Hit The Floor,” the song:

In January 2020, I was kicked out of my previous band, The Sweet Things. I was really depressed. I had played music for 30 years, and for the first time ever, I felt like it was over for me. Up until then, I had been a lead guitar player, and an occasional songwriter. All those years my focus was really just on playing solos and being a gunslinger—playing fast and showing off. This song changed everything.

When I wrote this song, I was single, and living alone at the time. I have a young daughter who is with me every other weekend. That summer of 2020, after I was kicked out the band, I would go into her room, I guess for strength and to not feel alone. While there, I heard the leaf blowers and lawnmowers, and it made me sad—hearing that noise made me feel like life was passing me by. One Friday this song came to me, I shared it with my friend, Darren—former drummer of The Sweet Things. He said it was really good, and that gave me the confidence to try and record a solo song. It felt like a sign, and from there I wrote the three other songs on the EP.

“When I Hit The Floor” is about substance abuse; it’s about hitting bottom. Consequences come and go, and you stop caring. You scare people away or alienate them by your actions. They worry about you, but then let go. All these feelings closed in on me when I was in my daughter’s room during the time of writing the song.

Before I got sober, every night I would go to bed I would pray to God to take my life. I didn’t want to wake up. I hoped everything I ingested would take me away. I remember one time my daughter said something about me dying; she said “you would never see me again.” That is etched in my mind, and is one of the lyrics in the song. It took a minute to clean up, but on November 30th 2018 I became sober. The chorus in this song is about the faith you find when you fall down the stairs and you’re still alive. It’s sad but triumphant—you come to the edge of the cliff but you don’t jump. Instead, you change the course of your life.

The EP is like a concept record. This first song tells the overarching story—feeling life has passed me by, feeling lost in pain, losing parts of my life that I thought made me who I am, and coming close to throwing life away. It’s about desperation, and that desperation leading to positive change. Doing something drastic that isn’t killing yourself—saving yourself.

“When I Hit The Floor,” the video:

I had a small budget to make this video, and me and the director David J Barron decided we would film it near where the drama unfolded. I have since moved away from the area, so it was emotional to go back there. We had a handheld film camera from the 1970s, and it felt like we had to do it in a series of one-takes. I had to be “on point” and convey the emotions and narrative of the song without a lot of chances. It was kind of exhilarating to rise up to this role. There was no rehearsal, and I had no idea what I wanted to do or how I wanted to move. I just made up my mind to let what comes naturally flow.

It’s funny the first version of the video had no images of me playing guitar. I played every guitar part on the EP, and playing guitar is my life. I think I was just so focused on the sentiment I forgot that. Then it was strongly suggested we add in the guitar footage. We shot me playing in a Brooklyn warehouse one rainy night. I think we did it in 3 minutes of film—we were in and out.

“When I Hit The Floor,” the lyrics:

Well, the leaf blowers are blowing
I know, it’s time to move on
No more days of not knowing
Summer is almost gone

The sadness is overtaking
So, baby, I’m over overmedicating

Have this sinking feeling
Fall is almost gone

Chorus:

It ain’t luck
Things look up
A life of more
When I hit the floor

Well the lights are dimming
And the sinners keep on sinning
Bittersweet swallow
Don’t look back

Well I came close to going
Baby girl, I wouldn’t see you again
Got so desperate not knowing
Nowhere else to go

The album’s raw but polished production aesthetic is courtesy of producer Matt Chiaravalle (Warren Zevon, Joe Bonamassa, Spacehog). “Matt played in the East Village rock n’ roll scene as a respected musician, and he produced my old band, L.E.S. Stitches, as well as other punk-influenced artists around town. He then went on to produce songwriter artists,” Lorne says. “I see myself living between these worlds, so he felt like the perfect pick to capture the attitude of my music and the sentiment of my songs. Matt also has a great sense of humor, and that made me feel at ease when singing about some painful things from my past.”

Wyldlife bassist Spencer Alexander designed the EP artwork, and it is a subtly playful homage to the cover of Don Henley’s first solo album, I Can’t Stand Still.

On her new album LIVE FROM MEMPHIS, due August 13 via Blackbird Record Label, acclaimed Americana singer, songwriter and musician PI JACOBS peels back many layers of her life and sensibility in both the songs and the story intro’s that she narrated for each song.

An outstanding example of this is the Los Angeles-based artist’s new and third track “No Sin To Be Poor,” which is based on her own life growing up poor in Northern California. The song is accompanied by an imagery-rich animated video created by Turkish surreal artist Mertcan Mertbilek, who did the same honors for the album’s first release, First Thing Tomorrow.” Watch the “No Sin To Be Poor” video here, which was premiered yesterday by American Songwriter. Listen to the song here and the story intro here. Pre-order the album here.

With her blend of roots-rock swagger and storytelling soul, Pi Jacobs distinctively amplifies the concert experience on LIVE FROM MEMPHIS (her first album for the label and ninth overall): it places eight original songs alongside the self-narrated personal stories that shaped them. Recorded with a full band, the project offers a sincere and sometimes funny look at her formative years, her family relationships, and even a few lessons she’s learned along the way.

In the compelling “No Sin To Be Poor,” Pi reflects about the hardship of poverty:

Oh Mary get back in the line
As if you got nothing but time,
You gotcha kids counting on you
Waiting on stamps for food
But it’s no Sin
Three jobs and a couple a babies
Oh Mary you ain’t never been lazy
But you can’t make water from wine
You’re paying that rent on time
Girl it’s no sin..

–What inspired the song “No Sin To Be Poor”?

PI: I was thinking about my mom, who was young, single and didn’t have a lot of support. She worked SO hard, but occasionally we had to go on public assistance. She ended up becoming the first person in our family to graduate college. She went on to become a public-school teacher, and a shining example of public service.  When I was young, I didn’t know we were poor, but of course as I got older, I started feeling different and “other” because my house was janky, or because I only had a few cheap clothes, or got picked up in a car that had the paint peeling off.   Kids can be cruel sometimes. The crazy part is that we had SO MUCH FUN, even with nothing. We made up games in the dirt, simply by using our imaginations. And as poor as we were, my mom always saw to it that we had art, literature, and music in our lives, and ironically, those things made me feel very rich.

–Can you talk about the video for the song and why you chose that direction?

PI: I really fell in love with Mertcan Mertbilek’s style. He is so fun and surreal, while conveying the deep heart of any story. I had him listen to the “story intro” for “No Sin To Be Poor,” as well as the lyrics. The story intro talks a lot about the government food we had to live on when I was young, and how we grew veggies in a garden and supplemented that. I think he really grasped the “making a bad situation good” aspect of “No Sin To Be Poor.”

–Your songs have always been revealing. What led you to decide to record a story intro for each song on the album? In these story intro’s, you peel back even more layers of yourself.

PI: Well, I might live to regret it ha-ha!

In last year’s lockdown, I really couldn’t write music, but I felt a deep need to get these stories off my chest. I felt like I had been being a bit chickenshit, because in a song, you can be a little vague. I wanted to really tell the truth, in fact writing the stories felt quite compulsive, I just couldn’t stop. All I can hope is that these stories resonate and help people.  I asked myself who they were for, because “Adult Children of Hippies” are a really SMALL segment of society. Then I realized that my friends who grew up ultra-religious had the same issues. Being brought up “outside the norm” with parents who are purposefully “rejecting society” or aspects of society, well that’s hard as a kid–You’re not ‘normal’, it’s not your choice, and there’s nothing you can do about it.  I wanted to really own the things I’d been dancing around in my songs. I was terrified to show these stories to my mom, but it turns out, she is ok with them. She even helped coach me on how to deliver them (she’s an actress and writer). There’s been a lot of growth and healing for us, and I no longer feel like I’m hiding myself from everyone.

On the concert front, Pi Jacobs’ upcoming itinerary includes shows in Los Angeles (August 28), Nashville (September 23 and 25), Washington DC (September 30), New York City (October 3) and her San Francisco hometown (October 15).
