Indonesian rock trio VOICE OF BACEPROT (VOB) embarked on a career in music despite many challenges being from a small village, Singajaya, three and a half hours away from the nearest venue in the city of Garut, West Java; having to build their own modest practice studio due to lack of music facilities; and face the stigmas and unsolicited suggestions regarding religion and decency directed at them due to being Muslim females who playing heavy rock/metal music and wearing of the hijab on stage. Instead of letting any of this discourage them, VOB’s have used these setbacks to develop a strong character which they’ve portrayed throughout their debut full-length album RETAS out today across all digital platforms via 12WIRED. Stream/download RETAS now at: https://li.sten.to/vob-retas.

In Bahasa Indonesia, “retas” translates to “a body of of igneous rocks that breaks through by cutting through other rocks.” It epitomizes how the band see themselves and is collection of songs that embody their solid determination to break free and carve out their path as a band, as musicians, and as independent women.

“We have become rocks now,” shares vocalist/guitarist Marsya. “Hardened, rigid, and stiff due to all the doctrines in our minds. But through music and our friendship, we became fully aware that they must be cut through and broken regardless.”

With NTRL guitarist Coki Bollemeyer at the helm as producer for the newer songs on the album, RETAS comprises nine tracks, including album focus track “Age Oriented,” fan-favorite “What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?” “The Enemy of Earth is You,” instrumental track “Kawani,” and four previous singles that they have released since 2018, including their breakthrough single “School Revolution” and the smash hit “God, Allow Me (Please) to Play Music”. See below for a full track-by-track breakdown.

“We really enjoyed making this album, thanks in no small part to Coki,” acknowledges Marsya. “His support and appreciation towards the hard work we put into the process have made a huge difference. It gave us the energy and confidence to give our very best.

“You must remember that we come from a village where many see women as inferior to men,” she explains. “After completing high school, we did not have a lot of options. It was either work at home or for a relative at a convenience store. Or marry someone our parents choose. More often than not, we were told it was ‘inappropriate and too soon’ and we ‘did not have enough experience’. There is a partiality towards age being the main benchmark to determine the merit of one’s artistic work. It meant the young must wait until they reach a certain age deemed worthy of independence to show their true potential.”

“We believe that an album is a quintessential representation of an artist’s creative journey, a portfolio of their creative output,” shares bassist Widi. “If the singles we released felt like separate pieces of our collective unravelling anxiety, then Retas is the glue that melds them all together as a whole, like a knot of threads that loops their way around until they become a complete work of art. It is like a gallery where artworks are displayed in all their glory.”

RETAS‘tracks were split up between co-producer Stephan Santoso, Yuka Dian Narendra and Coki Bollemeyer along with vocal direction from Irvan Natadiningrat on select songs. Mixing was completed by Stephen Santoso and Tue Madsen while being mastered by Grammy Award-winner Howie Weinberg (Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana). The album features stunning Sufism-inspired cover artwork illustrated by the prodigious Indonesian artist Dede Cipon.

VOBMarsya (vocals & guitar), Widi (bass) and Sitti (drums)—will embark on their first-ever U.S. tour this August starting with a headlining show on August 3 in Los Angeles, CA at El Cid along with a featured set at Head In The Clouds Festival in Pasadena at at Brookside At The Rose Bowl. “I’m dying in the light when I see the children cry
In the bright of bombs! Bombs! Bombs!”
What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?” by VOICE OF BACEPROT

Indonesian all-girl rock trio VOICE OF BACEPROT are not ones to shy away from tackling difficult topics surrounding global affairs. The group have faced opposition since their beginnings from conservative Muslims because they perform heavy rock/metal music while wearing hijabs and because of their gender which inspired their ground-breaking, critically acclaimed singles such as “God, Allow Me (Please) to Play Music,” “[NOT] PUBLIC PROPERTY” and “PMS.”

Following the May release of their socially conscious single “The Enemy of Earth Is You,” VOICE OF BACEPROT deliver a fierce anthem against war with their volcanic new single “What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?” out today, June 15, digitally. Taken from their upcoming debut album RETAS arriving July 13 via 12WIRED, the breathlessly paced track picks up the rallying cry of Rage Against The Machine with a mesmerizing, insistent guitar riff and plea from vocalist/guitarist Marsya, bassist Widi, and drummer Sitti denouncing the numerous wars ravaging the world, all of which are tearing apart the lives of countless innocent people. Listen to “What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?” streaming now below or at https://li.sten.to/whats-the-holy-nobel-today.

“One of the most gut-wrenching topics that drains us emotionally are the horrors of war,” shares Marsya. “The biggest casualties of wars are always civilians, mostly women and children. This song made us dream that perhaps one day, our united voice in rejecting war could be heard by the world. Our dream has always been to be a part of that voice, shouting against war regardless of its reasoning.”

“You can read what the single is really about between the lines,” says Sitti. “We wanted to express our experience of being trapped in a ‘war’ of our own, one which involved us being bullied on social media. People would attack us with such intense fury through negative comments even though we have never shown aggression towards anyone.”

“With ‘What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?’ we are declaring that no positives can be taken from any war, wars separate and destroy,” exclaims Widi. “There is a political war just around the corner: the Indonesian presidential election. During previous elections, we were segregated from one another and turned against each other, even those from our closest social circle. We should learn not to let it happen again.”

VOICE OF BACEPROT are excited to spread their music and engage activism with audiences across the globe. The trio recently announced their first-ever U.S. tour later this summer from August 3 to 19 which includes a stop at Head In The Clouds Los Angeles festival. The headlining run will see the band bring their energized live performance to club stages across several major music markets including Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. Indonesian Rock Trio VOICE OF BACEPROT Reveal Protest Anthem “The Enemy Of Earth Is You” Against Indifference to Climate Change

DT: MAY 19, 2023

FM: KELLY WALSH, SRO PR

INDONESIAN ROCK TRIO
VOICE OF BACEPROT
PROTEST AGAINST INDIFFERENCE TO CLIMATE CHANGE
IN NEW SINGLE
“THE ENEMY OF EARTH IS YOU”
FROM DEBUT ALBUM
‘RETAS’
DUE IN JULY

BAND JOIN ‘MUSIC DECLARES EMERGENCY (MDE),’
A GLOBAL GROUP OF ARTISTS, MUSIC INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS AND ORGANISATIONS THAT STAND TOGETHER TO DECLARE A CLIMATE AND ECOLOGICAL EMERGENCY

Indonesian all-girl rock trio VOICE OF BACEPROT (VOB) have come forward with a galvanizing new single, “The Enemy Of Earth Is You,” a call-to-action protest anthem against indifference to climate change. In 2016 several natural disasters wreaked havoc across Indonesia—no less than 1,985 happened, breaking a 10-year record of the most natural disasters ever occurring in a calendar year. One of the most devastating of them was the flash floods that swept the regency of Garut in West Java.

Born and raised in a small village called Singajaya (found at the foot of a mountain in one corner of Garut), the band members were not directly affected, but the floods deeply emotionally impacted vocalist/guitarist Marsya, bassist Widi, and drummer Sitti, inspiring them to write “The Enemy Of Earth Is You.” The single expresses their broken hearts and agony following the above events.

Taken from their much-anticipated debut album RETAS due in July (exact date tba), “The Enemy Of Earth Is You” is available now at your preferred digital streaming platform HERE and can also be heard streaming below.

Coinciding with the release of “The Enemy Of Earth Is You,” VOB have aligned themselves with over 6,600 musicians and music industry workers worldwide by joining Music Declares Emergency (MDE), a global movement bringing together musicians, music industry professionals, and organisations to use music as a means for raising public awareness about climate issues and the protection of life on Earth. With their NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET campaign, MDE have garnered support from some of the world’s most renowned artists and bands, including Billie Eilish, Arcade Fire, The 1975, Imogen Heap, Fatboy Slim, Major Lazer, and Tom Morello.

In the aftermath of the flood and natural disasters, Marsya recalls: “At that moment, we came to think humans are the real Earth’s chief antagonists. We are the most foolish and gullible, spending our time synthesising and justifying all kinds of greed by destroying the world. We are the ones who have been ineptly killing ourselves!”

“It is a song that summarises our loathing towards anyone who becomes an enemy of the Earth,” she adds.” On the flip side, the single reminds us not to turn into one of them.”

With the help of producer and NTRL guitarist Coki Bollemeyer, VOB set about rearranging the song’s rhythm flow, initially based on some of the most prevalent nu-metal riffs from the late nineties and early noughties, to assert their collective anxiety and fury. The result is a composition articulating a sense of sadness yet wrapped in VOB‘s trademark ferocious sound.

ABOUT VOICE OF BACEPROT
VOICE OF BACEPROT (pronounced ‘bah-che-prot’) formed in Garut, West Java in 2014. Consisting of Firdda “Marsya” Kurnia (age 22) on vocals and guitar, Widi Rahmawati (age 21) on bass, and Euis “Sitti” Aisyah (age 22) on drums, the word “baceprot” from their band name comes from the Sundanese language meaning “noisy”. It was chosen to represent the style of music that they play.

VOB began to turn heads when a video of them performing a cover of a song by Rage Against The Machine in 2015 became popular on YouTube. The three-piece continued to produce more videos of them covering songs by their idols, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, and Slipknot, which garnered even more attention from both local and international media, and they quickly went viral.

Besides their obvious prodigious musical talent, it was also the unique and contradictory combination of heavy rock/metal music and their wearing of the hijab on stage that caught the eye of media from across the globe. The trio, who are all Muslims, have faced opposition from conservative Muslims, in their hometown of Garut. They sing in English language as well as Bahasa Indonesia and Sundanese, which has gained them a worldly fanbase outside Indonesia.

In 2018, VOB signed a deal with Jakarta-based booking agency Amity Asia. Not long after, they released their long-awaited self-written debut single “School Revolution.” Produced by Stephan Santoso–who also plays the guitar for Musikimia–the single propelled them to international stardom. They were personally invited by legendary guitarist Slash to meet him backstage when Guns N’ Roses held a concert at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta in November 2018. Further confirmation of their burgeoning reputation came via personal shout-outs from their idols Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea on social media, along with Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid. Shortly after they graduated from high school at Muslim Senior High School Madrasah Aliyah in 2020, Marsya, Sitti, and Widi relocated to Jakarta with the support from their new management agency, 12WIRED.

After several years of blood, sweat, and tears, VOB are set to unveil their greatest work yet in July 2023: debut album RETAS.
