Rock n’ roll’s newest destination in Las Vegas—the COPA ROOM at Tuscany Suites & Casino—has announced shows by the influential NYC long-running metal group Prong (Saturday, October 3) and star-studded rock band The Halloween Jack making their Vegas debut (Saturday, November 1). Tickets are now on sale for both shows at the links below.

Prong is original member Tommy Victor (guitar, vocals), Christopher Dean (bass), and Tyler Joseph (drums). The international touring act’s current album is the critically acclaimed State Of Emergency which features the modern groove metal anthem “Breaking Point.” Their catalog includes the albums Beg To Differ (1990) and Prove You Wrong (1991) and the rock club, radio, and massive streaming hit “Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck” from 1994’s Cleansing album.

The Halloween Jack brings together star players Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses, Rockstar Supernova), Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Eric Dover (Jellyfish, Slash’s Snakepit, Alice Cooper), and Daniel Shulman (Garbage, Run-D.M.C.). They’ll be performing their spin on hits from the 70’s and 80’s.

The COPA ROOM at Tuscany Suites & Casino—an intimate room with a big sound—

launched its weekend rock entertainment in mid-July with an upgraded sound system. The 18+ venue has a capacity of 150-200 (depending on the layout), with areas designed for both seating and standing. “It’s good to see the Tuscany stepping up to give live music a proper venue in Sin City,” noted Taylor T Carlson in his ZRockR review (8/15/2025) of the Saints of Las Vegas show.

A full-service bar is available with well drinks priced at $10-12 and beers between $5-7. Self-parking and valet parking at the Tuscany are always complimentary.

The announcement follows the band’s extensive 2025 international run and coincides with rising anticipation for LEGENDS, their upcoming album due October 17 via Better Noise Music.

Kicking off February 9 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, the tour will hit venues across the U.S. and Canada, including major stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston before wrapping April 20 in Vancouver, BC. Known for their explosive stage presence and signature blend of history and heavy metal, Sabaton will deliver an epic live experience for fans of all ages.

Mitch Schneider Looks Back at Former Client Tom Waits

Tom Waits’ terrific fifth album ‘Foreign Affairs’ was released on this day (September 13) in 1977. I reviewed it for the monthly Crawdaddy (it was one of the many plum assignments that editor Jon Pareles gave me).

Back then, I was 21 and living at my folks’ house in the Bronx. I would lock myself up in their basement (when I wasn’t going to shows) and listen to test pressings of albums that were assigned to me to review.

It was always a nerve-racking experience to review albums because you hoped and prayed you would “get it right“ and do a great album justice. There was of course no Internet back then so you couldn’t read, and perhaps be influenced by, what other writers may have been saying about a particular album ahead of its release. You were pretty much on your own when it came to forming an opinion.

Years later, in 1999 at MSO PR, I handled the PR, along with my friend and former associate Tresa Redburn, for Waits’ deeply moving “Mule Variations” album. That was a fantastic full circle moment for me.

It’s been almost a year since 6x Platinum and 8x Gold-certified, record-breaking Finnish rock outfit THE RASMUS (@therasmusofficial) released the first single (“Rest In Pieces” on October 24, 2024) from their highly anticipated 11^th studio album, WEIRDO, which finally arrives today (September 12) via Better Noise Music (their first for the label) and Playground Music. The album, as well as limited-edition merchandise bundles, are available now HERE.

Known for their musically dark atmospheres, the band subversively merges catchy modern pop stylings with stadium-sized guitar crunch throughout the songs on WEIRDO.

“I find it comforting that our 11th album, WEIRDO, has pretty much the same message as on our first album released in 1996,” explains frontman Lauri Ylönen. “It is to defend and praise the ones who are different from the masses and proudly being themselves as they are. It has been our philosophy from the very beginning.”

Ylönen further explains the power behind being a “weirdo.” “In this society I’ve always felt that I’ve had to prove myself for being the way I am or doing the things I do. I’ve always felt like an outsider not fitting the norm. I’ve been called a weirdo, misfit and a freak. That used to make me angry—but not anymore. It’s become my source of strength and confidence. I’ve realized the power of it. All the people I find exciting and inspiring are somehow strange. We, the Weirdos, unite and feed off people’s judging attitudes. The fact is they’re just afraid of us. To celebrate today’s album release, THE RASMUS is excited to share the title track with their legions of fans, especially since they teamed up with The Funeral Portrait singer Lee Jennings for song and accompanying video which can be seen now on the band’s official YouTube page HERE.

“‘Weirdo’ was the first song we wrote and it shaped the concept for the entire album,” says Ylönen. “It celebrates being different and individual. Since the first song I ever wrote in 1994 called ‘Myself,’ I’ve felt like an outcast and someone who doesn’t quite fit in.”

“Being a part of ‘Weirdo’ with The Rasmus has been incredible,” continues The Funeral Portrait singer Lee Jennings. “It’s an anthem for the outcasts, and I’m beyond proud of how it turned out. Working with such an iconic band has been awesome, and now we’re hitting the road together across Europe. Get ready! The Funeral Portrait and The Rasmus are coming to represent all of the Weirdos across Europe this November.”

The “‘Weirdo” single release is the follow up to “Love Is A Bitch” (released July 11 and described by lead singer Lauri Ylönen as a “wildcard” track for the band), which can be streamed and downloaded HERE, while the video can be seen on the band’s official YouTube page HERE (which has over 100k views).

The fourth single, “Break These Chains,” was released May 16 along with the “Break These Chains” video, which has since garnered over 812k views, while “Creatures of Chaos” arrived March 28, with the video racking up over 875k views. The album’s first single, “Rest In Pieces,” was rolled out on October 25, 2024, paired with a lyric video which now has amassed over 668k views.

Most of the songs on WEIRDO were written by Lauri Ylönen, Desmond Child (who contributed to the band’s BLACK ROSES and RISE albums and has worked with Bon Jovi, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, among countless others) and Marti Fredriksen (Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Veil Brides) in Folegandros, Greece. That’s where Lauri and Desmond met up to work on material that Lauri brought. THE RASMUS then did full band demos of all the tracks in Finland in July 2023, with production led by Frederiksen and Child.

Later, they finalized the songs and recorded the album with the whole band in Marti Fredriksen‘s Sienna Studios in Nashville. Some of the tracks were mixed by Fredriksen in Nashville, assisted by Evan Fredriksen, while other mixes were done by Chris Baseford (Nickelback, Shinedown, Daughtry) in Vancouver, Canada and by Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At The Disco, We Are Scientists) in London, and Joseph McQueen (Bad Wolves, As I Lay Dying, From Ashes To New) in Los Angeles. Additional production by McQueen injects a fresh intensity into tracks like “Creatures of Chaos” and “Break These Chains,” while Ylönen himself takes the helm on “Rest in Pieces” alongside Alex Mattson.

Last month (on July 19), The Rasmus played a charity concert in Ukraine on as the headliner of the Atlas Festival, as the only foreign artist at the event. Over 110,000 people were in attendance, and there was a comprehensive security system and evacuation plan for the audience and performers in just a few minutes if it was necessary. Thankfully the festival went off without any issues and they were able to raise over $2.5 million Ukraine’s air defenses. Last year, the festival raised over two million euros. The artists can choose to direct their charitable funds to any Ukraine-related cause, such as supporting children’s hospitals, purchasing ambulances, or helping combat medical personnel.

“Going back to Ukraine really hit us hard. The people there are just incredible,” says Lauri Ylönen. “Their strength, their spirit, the way they come together…it’s powerful to see and even more powerful to feel. We also got to catch up with Kalush Orchestra, which was great! Playing ‘In The Shadows of Ukraine’ with all those people in front of us—that’s the kind of thing you never forget.”

THE RASMUS will bring their unforgettable stage show to audiences worldwide in 2025 on the “Weirdo Tour,” shows for 2026 are starting to be confirmed. They recently concluded a month-long U.S. trek with The Funeral Portrait and their own North American headlining tour. Singer, songwriter, and mainstay of the Bay Area music scene Jeff Larson and longtime collaborator Gerry Beckley—known mostly as half of the Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum-selling rock group America with co-founder Dewey Bunnell—have joined forces to create the album JEFF LARSON WITH GERRY BECKLEY. Due October 24 on the Nashville-based Melody Place label, it’s a fresh modern-sounding recording with roots in the golden California sound and highlighted by two voices which often soar in tight harmony.

This is especially illustrated by release of the first single “C’mon Home,” out today (September 12) and coinciding with Beckley’s birthday. “‘C’mon Home’ was the last song to be added to this project,” says Larson. “I think we knew we had a strong set of songs but maybe lacked one more to fill it out. Gerry sent me a track he was working on that I could tell already had a vibe and a hook with the slide part he did. He had the initial verse lines and chorus idea, so he asked if I would fill the lyric in and sing it. To me this is classic Gerry Beckley production with hooks all over. It seems to have almost written and sung itself.”

Beckley says that “after retiring from my life of touring a couple years ago, I discovered that my love for writing and recording has not abated. If anything, this extra daylight in my schedule has allowed me to focus even more on this part of my creativity. This latest collaboration with Jeff I think stands as a great example. We have been writing and recording together for years now and I feel this is some of our best work ever.”

The eleven compositions on JEFF LARSON WITH GERRY BECKLEY extend the longtime collaboration that began in 1998 when Larson recorded a song by America co-founder Beckley. Not long after, Gerry returned the favor and sang on one of Jeff’s songs. A friendship was born. 2008 saw the release of Heart of the Valley. Inspired by 1970’s Nilsson Sings Newman, on which Harry Nilsson paid tribute to his contemporary Randy Newman with Randy on piano, Heart of the Valley found Larson movingly interpreting the Beckley songbook with Gerry contributing voice and accompaniment. The gorgeously atmospheric title song of Heart of the Valley might have referred to the California freeway known as the 405 (which indeed runs through the heart of the San Fernando Valley) but its appeal and universality extended far beyond the Golden State.

JEFF LARSON WITH GERRY BECKLEY continues their collective story in song. Produced and engineered by Beckley and Larson, it’s a melodic and eclectic set of songs by two friends, singers, and songwriters. Their vocal blend is a sweet and near-familial one as the singer-songwriters reflect on love, loss, and connection–and the poignant connection they’ve made here is one that’s both deeply rooted and vividly in flight. For these two artists, the song’s the thing.

“This project started by going through some of the songs Gerry and I had tracked between 2024-2025,” offers Larson. We have been writing and recording at a steady pace since 2020–on average a song a week. Over time, some songs had their own personality where they didn’t fit either of our solo endeavors. These were also the songs that were more 50/50 collaborations. I was me simply gathering a playlist of those songs, along with a handful of others that fit the idea of a more collaborative project. I sent the playlist to Gerry, and he came back immediately with, “There’s an album here.’”

From the opening strains of “Baby Goodbye,” Jeff Larson with Gerry Beckley proves transporting. The song’s farewell may be an emphatic one, but the importance of connection, and lightening one’s load, courses through the album. “One Last Time” conjures the image of standing on a precipice in life, while the pulsating “Looking at the Rain” poses the question, “Where do we go from here?” The lyric “only love survives” might offer a hint as to the answer. The ravishing “Sleight of Hand” finds its narrator at the crossroads, for sure, but with an undercurrent of hope.

If “Sleight of Hand” lopes at a wistful gait recalling Burt Bacharach’s best, the ruminative “Oh Diane”–a Beckley solo tune–basks in a beautiful melancholy redolent of both Bacharach and one of Beckley’s musical heroes and close friends, Brian Wilson. (It’s no surprise that Bacharach and Wilson were mutual admirers and onetime collaborators.) “C’mon Home” glides along on a California breeze with a tinge of “Sister Golden Hair” as Beckley’s still-reassuring slide guitar lines provide cool comfort.

At a time when joy is in short supply, Jeff Larson with Gerry Beckley offers it in abundance, as on the Larson original “Oh Wow!” Lyrically inspired by the innocence and wonder of a child, it doubles as an expression of the sheer adrenaline rush of love in full bloom. A loose, NRBQ-flavored rock-and-roll vibe infuses the track. An unexpected cover of David “Shel” Shapiro, Mogol, and Michael Julien’s “Live for Today” underscores the timelessness and relevance of a great song. “Live for Today” was first recorded in Italian in 1966 by British singer-guitarist Shapiro’s expatriate band, The Rokes, and popularized in the U.S. the next year by L.A.’s Grass Roots. It found particular resonance with young American soldiers fighting overseas in the Vietnam War who identified with its sentiments to “take the most from living, have pleasure while we can.” As reimagined by Larson and Beckley, the urgent admonition to “Live for Today” could have been written yesterday.

Gerry Beckley knows the life of a touring musician well. In 2024, he stepped away from the road after over 50 years on stages around the world with America. The jagged rhythms of “Waiting Game (Jet-Lagged Zombie)” complement its evocative and memorable imagery. “Again” is an arresting and introspective portrait of a traveling man: “It takes a sky to wonder why/If not now, then when?” The album culminates with the Beckley-penned “Amnesia.” With mournful piano and stately strings, it’s raw and devastating (“Why is it that all of the things we recall are the ones we truly regret?”) yet filled with hard-won wisdom and, above all, humanity. Throughout the aptly titled LEGENDS, SABATON—Joakim Brodén (vocals), Pär Sundström (bass), Chris Rörland (guitar), Thobbe Englund (guitar), Hannes Van Dahl (drums)—delve into some of history’s greatest and most loved characters such as Jeanne D’arc (also known as Joan of Arc), Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar, and the legendary swordmaster Miyamoto Musashi.

For “Crossing The Rubicon,” their focus is on Julius Caesar, who rose to prominence in the Roman Republic as consul. He enacted reforms to reduce corruption and ease taxation while leading his legions to victories in Gaul, defeating tribes like the Arverni, Helvetii and Belgae, and expanding Roman territory to the Rhine and Danube rivers. As his influence grew, political rivals became increasingly hostile. In response, he famously crossed the Rubicon, igniting a civil war. After defeating his enemies in Italy, Greece, and Egypt, he returned to Rome with dictatorial powers, implementing the Julian calendar and modernizing public works. However, on the Ides of March in 44 B.C., he was assassinated by Senate conspirators, ending his rule but leaving a significant legacy as a master strategist and ambitious leader who reshaped Rome’s future.

“Everyone knows the phrase ‘Veni, vidi, vici,’” says bassist Pär Sundström. “It’s iconic, just like Caesar himself. He was a force of nature who reshaped an entire empire. And his story…well it’s pure Sabaton material. When we did some internal trials of the new songs and got our closest friends and colleagues to listen to it, we quickly noticed that this was one of the—if not the—top tracks from our new album. Five Finger Death Punch and BABYMETAL had performed at the same festival overseas back in 2015, so I was really happy thinking they might have remembered me from then. I sang Japanese lyrics inspired by and based on the original lyrics of “The End,” and spent a lot of time experimenting to figure out what kind of voice would best suit such a deep, cool track. My favorite part of the song is the flow from the section starting with “Negai o kakete” right after the chorus into the break — I loved how my voice gradually got covered and engulfed by Ivan’s growl, which gave me chills. I hope listeners will enjoy that moment as well.”
