To learn about what inspired the theme for OZZY OSBOURNE’s PATIENT NUMBER 9 album, look no further than the 26-page comic book available solely in some limited-edition album packages. Featuring a story by Todd McFarlane and illustrations by Jonathan Glapion (the beautiful haunting interior pages were painted by Glapion with a striking cover provided by McFarlane), the comic book was initially available only in record stores and online. The story tells how OSBOURNE is trapped in an asylum with no way out, he’s tortured by the doctors, abused by the patients, and hunted by a horrific creature born from his shattered mind. The comic book serves as the prequel to the McFarlane-directed video for the album’s first single and title track” Patient Number 9.” The Limited Edition CD + Comic Book bundle is now being sold at more than 600 comic book stores throughout North America (click here to find a local store).

PATIENT NUMBER 9–released September 9 and marking OZZY’s 13^th solo studio album–triumphantly sets new career highs for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy®-winning singer and songwriter. The critically acclaimed album has topped his previous chart entries with record-breaking numbers around the world. In the U.S., the album debuted at #1 on multiple charts: Top Album Sales (Ozzy’s first #1 ever on this chart), Top Current Album Sales (another first), Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums, Top Hard Rock Albums, Top Vinyl Albums and Tastemaker Albums charts; and at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. Globally, the album charted at #1 in Canada (OZZY’s first-ever #1 there); career high #2 entries in the UK, Australia, Finland and Italy; #6 in the Netherlands and New Zealand; #8 in Belgium; and #14 France. Other highlights include #2 Austria, Germany and Sweden; #3 in Switzerland; and #4 in Norway.

Working with producer Andrew Watt for the second time, OZZY welcomed a dynamic A-list featured guests on the album. For the first time ever, Black Sabbath co-founder, guitarist, and riff-master Tony Iommi appears on an OZZY solo album. The record also boasts guitarists Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and longstanding righthand man and six-string beast Zakk Wylde who plays on the majority of the tracks. For the bulk of the album, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers held down drums, while the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters appears on three songs. Old friend and one-time OZZY band member Robert Trujillo of Metallica plays bass on most of the album’s tracks, with Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses and Chris Chaney supplying bass on a few songs.

Prog-leaning alt/power-pop/new wave Boston-based trio ELSEWHERE to release their musically adventurous and evocative concept album ‘LIFE…IS A FRACTION’ on November 4

Prog-leaning alt/power-pop/new wave Boston-based trio ELSEWHERE–led by frontman and guitarist Michael Aroian and drummer Adam Soucy–will release their musically adventurous and evocative concept album LIFE…IS A FRACTION on November 4. This follows the release of the album’s two singles: “Call You Out” and “The Pledge.” The track listing follows below.

For their third album, ELSEWHERE worked with producer and long-time collaborator David Minehan (Replacements, Aerosmith). LIFE…IS A FRACTION weaves together a fascinating, semi-autobiographical narrative about how our perception of time shifts as we grow older. Days, months, and years seem to speed up…until a frightening, life-changing diagnosis–and being forced to face mortality–changes everything once again. The record is based on the cancer diagnosis Aroian received several years ago which served as a defining point in his life.

“I became cognizant of relative time in my 30s,” Aroian says. “The idea behind LIFE…IS A FRACTION is that at any age, we have only lived a fraction of our lifespan. When you’re five, you’ve maybe lived 1/16^th of say, 80 years. When we’re children, life events seem to take much longer because we’ve only lived a very small part of an average life. In this fraction, the numerator is the number of days you have lived, and the denominator the total number you will ultimately live. In the story we tell on the album, as in my own life, the protagonist’s denominator is potentially cut short by getting sick. It sped everything up, and he, like I, was suddenly able to see time move. The more days that go by, the faster time seems to go as we rapidly approach our denominator.”

As the protagonist wanders through life before being brutally confronted with his own mortality, he explores various options–face it, embrace it, defy it. Through it all, LIFE…IS A FRACTION teeters precariously on the edge of sanity. “When I was diagnosed with cancer, I experienced this first-hand,” says Aroian. “My denominator was reduced. I now literally live it every day. Time is indeed fleeting and the sooner we realize this, the sooner we can take control and live each day to the fullest. The tragedy is not that this is happening to us, but that we might not learn from it or do anything proactive or meaningful about it.”

LIFE…IS A FRACTION shows the band reaching a creative zenith (all in a hard-hitting 34 minutes); it’s an original rock epic that shakes the foundations not only of what everyone’s come to expect of the New England trio, but also of the lives of everyone who listens. Musically, it was influenced by front man Aroian’s lifelong passion for Rush and particularly their 1978 classic album Hemispheres, as well as the early Genesis catalogue. After the main 10-song cycle, the album ends with ELSEWHERE’s most recent singles from 2020-21, “Call You Out” and the aforementioned “The Pledge.”

The band previously released two albums and EPs and are best known for their single “Don’t You Believe Me Baby,” a dynamic cover of a previously unrecorded early 80’s Police song. That atypical release helped the band generate over half a million streams on Spotify and score a full-page story in the Boston Herald. It was followed by the “banthem” (ballad/anthem) “The Pledge,” which broke important ground by tackling the often-taboo subject of Alzheimer’s Disease; the song was mixed by Grammy-nominated producer Mark Needham (The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Pink, Elton John).

Q&A with Michael Aroian of ELSEWHERE

Q: Life…is a Fraction comes in at 34 minutes–was that where you ended up because you felt the story was told in that time?

Michael Aroian (MA): “Yes and no. Originally, the idea was only supposed to be told in 8-9 minutes and was going to be included as part of a B-side to an earlier EP we released in 2018 called “Multi-Man”. As the pandemic roared on and we became more introspective and experimental with our writing and recording, the sonic canvas expanded and time ironically stopped for awhile to allow us to broaden the story and give it proper attention and treatment. We didn’t intend to have 10 chapters at the outset but as the project progressed, it was evident more music was needed to complete the narrative.”

Q: Life…is a Fraction seems to have a universal appeal since through the pandemic time seemed to be broken into fractions, but also stood still. Noting time perception was different over the past few years, did this play into the story at all?

(MA): It did indirectly at first and then the idea of fractional time perception became more crystallized as our everyday lives were put on pause. One thought about why time seems to move by quicker as we get older relates to the notion of being more busy, be it with family or professional or other obligations. When we are younger, most of us don’t have as many responsibilities or complexities in our lives. This usually changes with time. However, even as I myself was tasked with less mundane things to worry about during that approximate two year pause, time still whipped by. And it was because my numerator of days lived on this earth was catching up with my fixed but unknown denominator of days that I had to live. No matter what, I have lived a greater relative percentage of my life than I did before the pandemic and as a result everything sped up despite me spending more time at home “doing nothing”…This observation to me became more chilling and underscored what we were trying to tell people with this story…

Q: Can you talk about how the band came up with and refined its merger of prog-leaning alt-rock?

(MA): The notion of us being a prog leaning alt/power-pop/new wave trio didn’t necessarily happen consciously as say a band like The Police purposefully (and with genius) marrying rock and reggae. It was more a function of evolution. All the members in the band love prog rock and were raised on it to some extent but for me, being a boy in the 80’s and becoming an adult in the 90’s, I also ended up being exposed to so many interesting genres within the rock realm be it from punk to new wave to grunge to brit pop to nu metal. A lot of these different influences permeate our writing and while some of the pursuits of prog rock can be fantastic, sometimes they can be lost in self-indulgence (which is also okay). I think what we were unconsciously trying to do was create a concept record that would be applicable to today’s music consuming environment. Things move faster and attention spans are shorter. The notion of the bridge in song arrangement has been abandoned or mutated. We thought we could convey a story with deep meaning in more bite sized chunks that perhaps younger people who are always on the move and looking at their phone could enjoy and understand. But stylistically and sonically our sound has arrived via a gradual confluence of many different musical influences.

Describing themselves as a “prog leaning alt/power-pop new wave band,” Boston based power trio Elsewhere’s single “Don’t You Believe Me Baby”–a dynamic cover of a long overlooked, previously unrecorded early 80’s Police song–has scored hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, and streams on Spotify and landed the band a full page story in the Boston Herald. The title song hummed along in its progressive chord changes on a dime, shifting from heavy bass and guitar to Davison’s soaring “I Get Up, I Get Down” section that repeated throughout the 18-minute song. “And You and I” followed and that’s definitely a crowd pleaser. “Siberian Khatru” is more a straight-ahead rocker and the perfect song to bring the audience to its feet and close the second set. As with “The Album Series Tour 2022,” which started off in the UK this past June, the U.S. tour is dedicated to the late Alan White—the band’s legendary drummer—following his passing this past May (see the band quotes about Alan here).

Alan White joined YES in June 1972, just days before their “Close To The Edge” Tour began. Over the following 50 years, Alan would appear on every YES album including 2021’s The Quest. Following the global pandemic, he had been looking forward to this tour and re-joining his bandmates on stage, something he lived for, in the run up to his 50th anniversary of joining YES.

Sadly, that was not be, but Alan’s towering presence will be omnipresent on the tour. Alan’s good friend, drummer Jay Schellen, will join YES for the forthcoming tour, alongside Steve Howe (guitars & backing vocals), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (lead vocals) and Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals).

The “Close to the Edge” show comprise full production and a high-definition video wall directed by Andy Clark and featuring the artwork of Roger Dean.

Following the release of The Yes Album and Fragile in 1971, YES released what is widely considered one of the most defining albums, not only for YES but for the whole progressive movement. Close To The Edge became an inspiration for their contemporaries and for successive generations of musicians. The album is saluted with a cover story in the September 2022 issue of the national magazine Guitar Player, for which Steve Howe was interviewed. He recalls: “We were young, enthusiastic, and adventurous, and we had this incredible breakthrough success with Fragile. We saw our next album as a real opportunity to prove our worth as a band. The door had been opened and we weren’t going to go backward. We wanted to sharpen our skills as far as writing and arranging.”

“Time Stood Still” was produced, mixed & mastered by Grammy Award-nominated and Juno Award-winning producer Kane Churko (Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach, Skillet) and recorded at The Hideout Recording in the band’s Vegas hometown. Co-written by multi-platinum songwriter Drew Lawrence (Lindsey Stirling, Christina Perri) and the band’s bassist/founder Nils Goldschmidt, “Time Stood Still” starts and ends tensely with eerie guitar sounds and possesses an explosive chorus with full-on guitar crunch and searing vocals by frontman Ro Viper, who sings, “I’ve been going down the darkest path.”

In addition to “Time Stood Still,” MORBID DREAMS features new songs “Hiding From Stars” and “Fade Away” alongside the previously released singles/videos “Last Drop” (launched by AntiMusic), “Can’t Win” outlet Terra) and “Back On The Train,” debuted by MXDWN which took note of the band’s “thunderous riffs, melodious guitars…[and] booming vocals.”

VELVET CHAINS—consisting of founder Nils Goldschmidt (bass), Brazilian brothers Laurent (lead guitar) and Larry (rhythm guitar) Cassiano, drummer Jason Hope and Chilean-bred lead singer Ro Viper—decided to issue this EP now instead of waiting to release a previously announced second album for next year. “We’re proud of these six songs and wanted to get them out there now,” says Nils. “At the same time, we’re excited about the band’s growth and evolution. We want to fully capture that in the studio with the next batch of songs.”

Armed with heavy riffs, melodic guitars, soaring vocals and driving rhythms, VELVET CHAINS performed this past summer at Rock Fest (Cadott, WI) and Blue Ridge Rock Fest (Alton, VA). They’ve also opened twice for Todd Kerns (Slash Feat. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, The Age of Electric) at Count’s Vamp’d in Vegas and have an ongoing Vegas residency at The Barbershop (The Cosmopolitan).

Americana/alt-country singer-songwriter and bassist DEB MORRISON will celebrate the September 9 release of her debut solo album THE NORTH FORK (Blackbird Record Label) with a special release show in Los Angeles at Hotel Café this Saturday, October 22. In advance of the concert, MORRISON has revealed an intimate video clip for the album’s track “Jaded – Live” which was premiered yesterday via AntiMusic. Watch it streaming below or directly HERE.

The “Jaded – Live” music video was recorded during lockdown and filmed by Nic Capelle of Rockton Road Studios who previously filmed and co-directed recent singles (“The North Fork,” “Blackbird,” “Salton Sea”) and produced THE NORTH FORK. The clip shows a stripped down performance featuring MORRISON on bass, Matt Littell on guitar and Natalie Capelle on harmony vocals.

“Jaded is about remembering when you were a dreamer,” shares MORRISON. “It’s about figuring out a way to rekindle feelings of hope and endless possibility in a complicated world.”

Further explaining the track, she states: “The story takes place at my friend’s mother’s house where we used to hang and talk about all of the things we dreamed of doing one day. It’s tough getting up over and over again when life knocks you down. It’s about to getting back to where you started, when you had big dreams, and empty pockets.”

On THE NORTH FORK, MORRISON blurs the boundaries between alt-country, Americana, and roadhouse rock & roll with cinematic storytelling. On their new album, SPIRITS, NOTHING MORE—Jonny Hawkins (vocals), Mark Vollelunga (guitar, backing vocals), Daniel Oliver (bass) and Ben Anderson (drums), pair unapologetically massive anthems, catchy hooks, and progressive music with introspective, philosophical lyrics and thought-provoking emotionalism. From the Top 5 Active Rock charting lead single “TIRED OF WINNING” and its fan-driven extended version “TIRED OF WINNING / SHIPS IN THE NIGHT” to fist-pounding banger “TURN IT UP LIKE” and their most recent impassioned single “YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT LOVE MEANS,” SPIRITS documents the impact the past two years of lockdown and turmoil has had on the world capturing society’s desperation, mental health struggles and self-realizations. In their latest music video for “BEST TIMES,” NOTHING MORE stress the power of living in the moment. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Robyn August (“Party With Me,” Snoop Dogg, Pitbull, Set It Off), the video displays the band’s unique mix of rock balladry and the full-on rock that the band is known for.
