Prog rock pioneers and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees YES are receiving praise for the in-progress U.S. leg of their “The Album Series Tour 2022,” celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1972 iconic album, Close To The Edge. This marks the band’s first trek in the U.S. since 2019 and kicked off with two shows in Glenside, PA at the Keswick Theatre on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8. It will wrap in New York at the NYCB Theatre on November 19. See the remaining tour dates below.

“Yes kicks off 2022 U.S. tour with stunning performance of ‘Close to the Edge’…greeted so rapturously by the sold-out crowd that loved every minute of this glorious performance…As always with a Yes concert, the sound, lights and visuals were uniformly excellent. Yes always sounds great live, and this show was no exception. The lighting was well-done…The video screens showed beautiful imagery throughout, well-timed to the songs and featuring some Roger Dean images and animation along with other breathtaking photos and graphics that enhanced the emotion of the songs.”
GOLDMINE MAGAZINE, 10/11/22

“This is the first Yes tour with Schellen in the driver’s seat as the only drummer (he’s backed up White during the last few years), and the veteran musician was definitely up to the task…Opening with “On the Silent Wings Of Freedom” served as a solid nod to late bassist Chris Squire…’Yours is No Disgrace” was steady, jazzy at times, and ‘Wonderous Stories’ found Howe spinning out a “Seen All Good People” tease on his 12-string valachia.”
VINTAGE ROCK, 10/15/22

“’Close to the Edge’ was note perfect throughout. Howe was majestic in his riffing and finger picking, trading from electric to acoustic to even slide guitar for pieces. The title song hummed along in its progressive chord changes on a dime, shifting from heavy bass and guitar to Davison’s soaring “I Get Up, I Get Down” section that repeated throughout the 18-minute song. “And You and I” followed and that’s definitely a crowd pleaser. “Siberian Khatru” is more a straight-ahead rocker and the perfect song to bring the audience to its feet and close the second set. YES has had a long history. This version kept that legacy intact.”
PENNSYLVANNIA PATCH, 10/12/22

As with “The Album Series Tour 2022,” which started off in the UK this past June, the U.S. tour is dedicated to the late Alan White—the band’s legendary drummer—following his passing this past May (see the band quotes about Alan here).

Alan White joined YES in June 1972, just days before their “Close To The Edge” Tour began. Over the following 50 years, Alan would appear on every YES album including 2021’s The Quest. Following the global pandemic, he had been looking forward to this tour and re-joining his bandmates on stage, something he lived for, in the run up to his 50th anniversary of joining YES.

Sadly, that was not be, but Alan’s towering presence will be omnipresent on the tour. Alan’s good friend, drummer Jay Schellen, will join YES for the forthcoming tour, alongside Steve Howe (guitars & backing vocals), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (lead vocals) and Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals).

The “Close to the Edge” show comprise full production and a high-definition video wall directed by Andy Clark and featuring the artwork of Roger Dean.

Following the release of The Yes Album and Fragile in 1971, YES released what is widely considered one of the most defining albums, not only for YES but for the whole progressive movement. Close To The Edge became an inspiration for their contemporaries and for successive generations of musicians. The album is saluted with a cover story in the September 2022 issue of the national magazine Guitar Player, for which Steve Howe was interviewed. He recalls: “We were young, enthusiastic, and adventurous, and we had this incredible breakthrough success with Fragile. We saw our next album as a real opportunity to prove our worth as a band. The door had been opened and we weren’t going to go backward. We wanted to sharpen our skills as far as writing and arranging.”

About YES

Formed in 1968 by Jon Anderson and the late, and much-missed, Chris Squire, YES have been one of the most innovative, influential and best-loved bands in rock music history. Their 1970s albums The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Yessongs (a triple live album set), Tales From Topographic Oceans, Relayer and Going For The One were ground-breaking in musical style and content. Their music also became synonymous with artist Roger Dean whose distinctive YES logo design and artwork adorned the lavish gatefold presentation sleeves of many YES albums.

With sales of over 50 million records, the Grammy-award winning YES were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017 where they performed Roundabout from the album Fragile and the FM radio-friendly Owner Of A Lonely Heart from the 1985 album 90125. In 2021 YES released their 22nd Studio album, The Quest, produced by Steve Howe, which went to No.1 in the UK rock chart and entered the Official UK Album Chart at No.20.

Prog rock pioneers and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees YES have revealed the dates and details for the U.S. leg of their “The Album Series Tour 2022,” celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1972 iconic album, Close To The Edge. This marks the band’s first trek in the U.S. since 2019 and will kick off with two shows in Glenside, PA at the Keswick Theatre on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8 and wrap in New York at the NYCB Theatre on November 19. Tickets will begin to go on sale on Friday, September 2; check local listings for information. See the full tour dates below.

As with “The Album Series Tour 2022,” which started off in the UK this past June, the U.S. tour is dedicated to the late Alan White—the band’s legendary drummer—following his passing this past May (see the band quotes below about Alan). Before the tour gets underway, a special tribute concert—“Alan White–Celebrating His Life and Music”—will be held October 2, 7:00pm at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle: https://www.stgpresents.org/calendar/13566/alan-white-celebrating-his-life-and-music

The door had been opened and we weren’t going to go backward. We wanted to sharpen our skills as far as writing and arranging.”

Journalist Joe Bosso wrote about the album’s place in rock history in Guitar Player (September 2022):

“Vast, enigmatic, full of moments of spectacular grandeur and ever-changing hues, Close to the Edge is the ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ of progressive-rock albums. Comprised of just three tracks – the dizzying side-long, 18-minute title track, the equally sprawling mini epic “And You and I,” and the whacked-out, hyperactive jazz-funk album closer “Siberian Khatru” – Close to the Edge documented Yes operating at the peak of their musical powers.”

YES Quotes About Alan White (June 2022)

Steve Howe: “It is with great sadness that I join with the other members of Yes to acknowledge the passing of our dearest friend and drummer, Alan White. He gave so many of his best years to the band and was a true believer and determined professional til the very end. Being a kind and loving human being just came naturally to him, with his mellow, non-confrontational personality and abundant generosity, which made him so popular with his friends and everyone he met.”

Geoff Downes: It is with the utmost sadness I have received the news of the passing of my dearest friend and bandmate Alan White. He was truly one of the greatest men I have ever met. Honest, loyal, passionate, caring, kind, generous, considerate, charitable, funny – so many superlatives, too many to mention – simply, an all-round top guy and one of the best. And despite living for many years in his adopted hometown of Seattle, he never lost that Geordie wit, irony and charm. As a musician he was unique in every way, and his powerhouse technique influenced whole generations of drummers and percussionists – an absolute legend in the true sense of the word. He was a joy to share the same stage with, often glancing over at the keyboard riser with a wink and a smile, but still laying down that solid, yet intricate groove as only he could. This was Alan – a genius who never took himself too seriously. We had some great laughs together, became very close, and always looked after each other to the point where they started referring to us as ‘The Odd Couple’!”

YES, who are Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison and Billy Sherwood, today (September 1) have unveiled the video for “Dare To Know.” It marks the second single and video from their upcoming album THE QUEST, due out October 1 on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music and produced by Steve Howe. Watch the “Dare To Know” video here.

“’Dare To Know’ presents a guitar theme played within many different arrangements, with different chord structures and altered textures,” says Steve Howe. “The ‘idea’ mentioned in the first verse gets described later as an awakening to the subtle goings on within our bodies and mind, all geared to nature’s scheme of things, all fluctuating and rearranging according to the principles of life, as we know it. The centrepiece leaves the orchestra alone to elaborate and develop the way the theme is heard, then augments the closing minutes of the song as it rests, with an acoustic guitar cadenza.”

Much of the music for THE QUEST was “written in late 2019 with the rest in 2020,” says Howe. “We commissioned several orchestrations to augment and enhance the overall sound of these fresh new recordings, hoping that our emphasis on melody, coupled with some expansive instrumental solo breaks, keeps up the momentum for our listeners.”

YES, who are Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison and Billy Sherwood, recently announced they will release their new studio album THE QUEST on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music on October 1. The album was produced by Steve Howe, who says:”Much of the music was written in late 2019 with the rest in 2020. We commissioned several orchestrations to augment and enhance the overall sound of these fresh new recordings, hoping that our emphasis on melody, coupled with some expansive instrumental solo breaks, keeps up the momentum for our listeners.”

THE QUEST was recorded across the globe. The sessions took place in the UK with Steve Howe, Geoff Downes and Jon Davison, while Alan White and Billy Sherwood got together in the studio in the US. “Billy Sherwood and myself did all the rhythm sections, bass and drum, in America,” says Alan White, “down in Los Angeles at Uncle Studios, where he works a lot. It helps when you’ve got a good place to work,” Alan laughs, “and Billy’s really good on the recording desk, so we got things down relatively quickly. I spent quite a while studying the music before I went down to LA so I was prepared.”

YES are pleased to today (July 23) reveal “The Ice Bridge,” the first track from the album. Watch the video here.

Alan White comments: “I’m extremely proud to be a part of this music and believe the video graphics are outstanding. A collaboration of many talents coming together to produce ‘The Ice Bridge.’ I hope our fans/audiences will appreciate the creativity put forward. I’m pleased to share it with the world and hope everyone will enjoy the ride.”

Steve Howe adds: “‘The Ice Bridge’ opens the album in the dark and moody key of C minor, aided by the orchestra. The rolling bass part kicks things into gear as the vocals and guitars start a winding journey through the various structures till the breakdown happens, where ice breaking is heard.”

Jon Davison was working with Geoff Downes on “The Ice Bridge” (Davison/Downes), looking at the dangers of climate change. He explained how he sets about collaborating with his band mates.

“Usually what happens is each member is left to write their respective parts and put their stamp on things,” says Davison. “Geoff sent me a selection of exciting and often gorgeous snippets he had created and made it clear that he wished I experiment freely and develop as needed. This in turn gave me the confidence to take on the vocal role–lyrics, vocal melody and harmony, how the vocals are presented and uniquely phrased–but all the while striving to stay faithful to Geoff’s initial ideas.”

“Jon’s vocals are fantastic,” adds Geoff Downes. “He’s really come into his own as a YES vocalist. This time he’s started to get the writing side together and working with the other musicians has been developmental for him. I think he’s hit a rich seam on this one.”

During this period YES have released three live albums Topographic Drama – Live Across America (2017), Yes Live 50 (2019) and The Royal Affair Tour: Live in Las Vegas (2020). The music of YES has endured over the years and has been handed down through generations of music lovers.

Album artwork by Roger Dean

Following the outstanding success of their 2019 American tour, YES will release a new live album, THE ROYAL AFFAIR TOUR, LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS, through BMG Records. The release date of the album is October 30, but it will be available exclusively through the YES Store starting October 2. Formats are: CD digi sleeve with a 12-page booklet; 2LP gatefold with 12″ booklet; and digital.
All YES concert tours are special events for their legions of fans, and “The Royal Affair Tour” was no exception, conceived as a wonderful celebration of the best of British progressive music. Guests on the tour were Asia (with YES keyboardist Geoff Downes and a special appearance by Steve Howe), John Lodge of The Moody Blues and Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy featuring Arthur Brown.
Of THE ROYAL AFFAIR TOUR album, Alan White says: “The Royal Affair tour album, being released in October, is a welcome new chapter in the wide expanse of YES live recordings. I hope you enjoy it.”
Guitarist Steve Howe adds: “Having the opportunity to bring together the band members in the development of a well-refined set of songs that captures the band’s true potential is simply an honor for me.”
The show features many classic tracks across the period 1970-1980. The set opened with “No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed,” the Richie Havens cover from YES‘ second album Time And A Word (1970). “Tempus Fugit” was taken from Drama (1980), Geoff Downes’ first as a member of YES, while “Going For The One,” “I’ve Seen All Good People” and “Siberian Khatru” are from some of YES‘ iconic mid-70s albums. The set included a rare live performance of YES‘ cover of Paul Simon’s “America”and John Lodge shared vocals on YES’ cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Soon-to-be YES drummer Alan White played on the original studio recording.
“The Royal Affair Tour” live set and album, recorded at the Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas, in July 2019, reaches a climax with two of the best-loved YES tracks, “Roundabout” and “Starship Trooper,” always a high note on which to close the set.
YES are Steve Howe (guitar) who joined in 1970; Alan White, drums since 1972; Geoff Downes (keyboards) who first joined in 1980; vocalist since 2011 Jon Davison; and Billy Sherwood, who played guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and was the late Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015, also played with Asia on this tour. Jay Schellen played additional drums.
“The Royal Affair Tour” also featured an exhibition of original art by Roger Dean whose artwork is synonymous having designed the iconic YES logo and the band’s best-loved album covers. Roger Dean recently painted THE ROYAL AFFAIR TOUR album artwork live on Facebook while also fielding questions from fans.
The 26-date “The Royal Affair Tour”and YES‘ performances were critically acclaimed:

“Yes proved again that they are, after all these years, still the kings of progressive rock.”Charlie Steffens, Vintage Rock, 8/5/19

It was a unique night of rock music history that has endured for half a century.”L. Paul Mann, Grateful Web, 8/6/19

As always, YES put on a magical show and took the crowd on a journey through their hits.”Alex Kluft, Music Connection, 8/5/19

The band sounded great and had brilliant visuals to accompany the songs. Sherwood’s bass playing is perfectly suited to capture the essence of the late Chris Squire while Geoff Downes and Steve Howe are still at the top of their games. Vocalist Jon Davison… looks extremely comfortable on stage, hitting each note with ease.”Roie Avin, The Prog Report, 7/15/19

The Royal Affair Tour – Live in Las Vegas track listing:

About Yes
For half a century YES have been one of the most innovative, influential and best-loved bands in rock music history and consistently at the fore-front of the progressive rock movement. Formed in 1968 by Jon Anderson and the late, and much-missed, Chris Squire, their 1970s albums The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, the triple live album set Yessongs, Tales From Topographic Oceans, Relayer and Going For The One were ground-breaking in musical style and content. Their music also became synonymous with artist Roger Dean whose distinctive YES logo design and artwork adorned the lavish gatefold presentation sleeves of many YES albums.
With sales of over 50 million records, the Grammy-award winning YES were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, where they performed Roundabout from the album Fragile and the FM radio-friendly Owner Of A Lonely Heart from the 1985 album 90125.

Prog rock pioneers and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees YES have announced a run of spring U.S. headline tour dates March 19-25 leading into their annual Cruise to the Edge (March 27-April 1) sailing out of Miami. At shows in Florida and South Carolina, the band will perform their classic hits and be joined by the Alan Parsons Live Project. Tickets for these dates–a precursor to the band’s North American fall tour, to be announced in the months ahead–go on sale to the public on Friday, January 24 at 10:00am ET.

YES is Steve Howe (guitar-joined 1970), Alan White (drums since 1972), Geoff Downes (keyboards; first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and the late Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015), with Jay Schellen on additional drums.

“We can’t think of a better way to lead into our ‘Cruise To The Edge’ than with five shows in the Southeast,” says Steve Howe. Alan White concurs: “Florida and South Carolina in the spring sounds absolutely perfect for a British band like us. We look forward to seeing everyone for a night of YES music.”

YES continues to deliver dynamic and unforgettable performances full of passion and musical virtuosity, with songs that expanded the boundaries of rock. Below is critical praise from last year’s North American tour.

“As always, YES put on a magical show and took the crowd on a journey through their hits.”
–Alex Kluft, Music Connection, 8/5/19

“Yes closed out the evening with a brilliant set filled with energetic deep cuts…they focused on material that played to the group’s strengths, and gave guitarists Steve Howe a chance to shine.  Vocally, Jon Davison has come into his own… He also looks like he is having a great time and is able to work the stage with ease. The Yes set closed with the 20 minute-plus ‘Gates of Delirium,’ from their Relayer album. It was an ambitious undertaking, but they nailed it. The evening closed with a moving version of ‘Imagine,’ a song that Yes drummer Alan White played on Lennon’s studio version of, and ‘Roundabout.’
–Thom Jennings, Niagara Gazette(Niagara Falls, NY), 6/26/19

“Yes, meanwhile, celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first album with a kind of kitchen-sink setlist, tossing plenty of rarities, and oddities, into its hour and 50 minutes on stage — opening with its rocking take of Richie Havens’ ‘No Opportunity Necessary…’ from its 1970 album Time and A Word and then tearing through ‘Tempus Fugit.’ The marquee moment was its longest, however — the 22-minute epic ‘Gates of Delirium’ from 1974’s Relayer album, performed for the first time in 18 years, whose lengthy instrumental passage was delivered with a virtuosic precision that held up to the original. Yes sent everyone home with more favorites – ‘Roundabout’ and ‘Starship Trooper,’ …Nostalgia reigned in this Royal Affair, but it was a glorious kind of past that fully merited the celebration.”
–Gary Graff, The Oakland Press (Oakland, MI), 7/4/19

“…Yes came on and kicked off with their version of ‘No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed’ before jumping into a wide mix of material from ‘Tempus Fugit’ and ‘Going For the One’ to ‘I’ve Seen All Good People’ and ‘Siberian Khatru.’ They have decided to mix things up more on this tour and the fans surely seemed thrilled by the choices. Following a rousing rendition of ‘America’ the band closed the main set with ‘The Gates of Delirium’ from Relayer.”
“The band sounded great and had brilliant visuals to accompany the songs. Sherwood’s bass playing is perfectly suited to capture the essence of the late Chris Squire while Geoff Downes and Steve Howe are still at the top of their games. Vocalist Jon Davison has definitely settled into to his role and looks extremely comfortable on stage, hitting each note with ease. Meanwhile, Drummer Jay Schellen swapped drum duties with Alan White throughout the set. The band returned for the encore to perform John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ on which Alan White originally played the drums. It was a wonderful version. Of course, they then closed with ‘Roundabout’ and ‘Starship Trooper.'”
–Roie Avin, The Prog Report, 7/15/19

…[the]revved-up crowd went wild when the members of Yes came out to close the night of historic prog…Davison does an incredible job of duplicating the alto tenor range of original band vocalist Jon Anderson. The other musicians played with such precision that it was almost like hearing the studio albums again. Howe was particularly impressive playing various electric guitars, a steel guitar and a lute. His solo acoustic guitar performance of ‘Clap’ from The Yes Album nearly stole the show.”
–Andy Gordon, Glide Magazine, 7/30/2019

“…wild applause from the crowd…unique night of rock music history that has endured for half a century.”
–L. Paul Mann, Grateful Web, 8/6/19

“…Yes proved again that they are, after all these years, still the kings of progressive rock.”
–Charlie Steffens, Vintage Rock, 8/5/19

“For more than 45 years, Yes has been writing and performing multi-faceted songs that are intricate, graceful and always technically savvy. No matter the decade, the concert experience has never been about loud distortion or pent up aggression. Rather, the arcane lyrics and sounds take fans on an aggrandized musical journey into the surreal. Though the band has gone through several personnel changes in their 20 album career, one things has always remained the same – a commitment to excellence by every member who has played an instrument or sang into a microphone. Along for the ride was singer Jon Davison, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes and bassist Billy Sherwood with drummer Jay Schellen.”
Big Shot Concerts, 7/25/19

“Yes’s 12-song, hour-and-45-minute set was more of a departure than Yes has shown in recent years. Kicking off with the opening track from 1970’s Time and A Word album, ‘No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed,’ was welcomed with open arms by long time fans of the iconic band. The six-minute ‘Tempus Fugit’ followed and was an absolute treat…Howe, now 72, seemed especially invigorated – while playing his 1971 solo piece ‘Clap,’ he lifted a leg, then kicked it, and shook his head and body as the crowd gleefully cheered him on… An 11-minute ‘Siberian Khatru’ may have received a standing ovation, but the audience was truly rewarded when classic Yes drummer Alan White joined the band for an especially stellar version of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘America.'”
–Robert Locke, Shindigmusic, 7/23/19
