ROSS VALORY has rolled out a new video for “Touched, Pt. ll,” a track from his debut solo album ALL OF THE ABOVE (OID Music). This film noir-inspired video is the the latest collaboration between the original Journey bassist and songwriter and video director Michael Cotten. He has also created the visually arresting videos for the album’s previous tracks: “Tomland (the album’s hypnotic first single), Wild Kingdom (with its Latin-fired intensity), and Windmill (defined by its Brazilian flair), his interpretation of War’s classic cruising anthemLow Rider and Nightflower” (a pastoral ribbon of music featuring Journey founding member George Tickner and longtime bandmate Steve Smith, along with Steve Roseman of Cold Blood).

VALORY hasn’t announced shows yet in connection with ALL OF THE ABOVE (which was released April 19), but he’s flexed his performance chops with a four-part YouTube live performance series billed as “The Sandbox Sessions.” “Until I play out, I’m Playing In!” says ROSS.

Recorded at his Northern California studio, the live performance clips debuted last month and feature VALORY, bass; Bobby Strickland, sax; Paul Spina, drums; Eric Levy, keyboards; and Vernon “Ice” Black, guitar, vocals on a series of cover songs: “Root Down” (Jimmy Smith), “Big Legged Woman” (Freddie King), “Cissy Strut” (The Meters), and “If You Want Me To Stay” (Sly & the Family Stone).

Here’s a Q&A with ROSS about the YouTube live performance series:

What motivated you to create the YouTube video covers series?

ROSS VALORY (RV): So many people have been waiting for me to perform and have been asking–for more than the year–when I’m going to play out. That will eventually happen but, in the meantime, I’ve decided to ‘play in!’

How was it decided which songs all of you would play?

RV: Rather than going to the trouble to assemble a small orchestra, in order to perform the album material in the way I envisioned it, Idecided to just have fun, with some great players at hand to perform some cool cover tunes.

It’s interesting that your debut album featured another cover, “Low Rider.” Did that influence this series?

RV: “Low Rider” definitely influenced me to do more cover tunes, most of which I’ve rarely had the opportunity to play in the past.

Can you tell us about the musicians you featured and how you assembled the group?

RV: I’ve been working with these same local musicians over the last three years. They have appeared in my music videos and we’ve also recorded yet-to-be-released material. It’s been very convenient and so easy to work up these cover tunes, as these players are quite talented and versatile.

Where and when was the series recorded?

RV: The Sandbox Sessions were recorded in August at my studio, which has made it very easy for us to step away from new music projects to do some jamming.

Is there any plan to release the songs as a stand-alone recording?

RV: It is possible that some of these songs from the Sandbox sessions could be recorded as standalone pieces, but there are no plans for that yet.

What’s next for you in 2025?

RV: I plan to release more material in 2025, from music I have recorded over the last three years. In the meantime, I will be recording performances for the release of Sandbox Sessions Volume Two!

ALL OF THE ABOVE) was produced by VALORY and co-produced by Eric Levy and Jacob Stowe. The nine tracks on the album represent the full maturity of VALORY’s musical gifts, cutting a broad swath through the instrumental territory the music travels. He plays keyboards, guitar, and, of course, many basses in a display of cultivated virtuosity across a palette far broader than could be found in his work with Journey. He is stepping out from behind his bass and, for the first time in his more than half-century as a professional musician, representing his vision and his compositions.

TOMMY EMMANUEL is an acoustic guitarist extraordinaire, composer, global touring artist, and Grammy® Award winner. He is also one of five people ever named a C.G.P. (Certified Guitar Player) by Chet Atkins, the great innovator, songwriter, producer, record company executive, and visionary. Today, TOMMY has announced the March 21, 2025 release of LIVE AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE (C.G.P. Sounds) and the album’s first single and live performance video, “The Jolly Swagman,” beautifully filmed by Bondi Rocks Media at the Sydney Opera House in his native Australia. Listen to track HERE and watch the video HERE.

“I wrote ‘The Jolly Swagman’ for an imaginary character,” says TOMMY, “who makes us all happy by clicking his heels in the air while playing the concertina!!”

EMMANUEL is no stranger to iconic stages from Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to London’s Royal Festival Hall and Paris’ L’Olympia. The legendary entertainer has dazzled audiences across the world. But there’s something truly magical about the Sydney Opera House, and the magic of his sold-out performances there has finally been captured on this new EMMANUEL-produced album. It features 16 tracks, four of which are medleys, including his famous “Beatles Medley” (a previous live version of this has been viewed more than 2 million times on YouTube).

“The moment and power in these hours spent playing music, is perfectly preserved here on this record,” says TOMMY. “I hope you can feel the intensity of our musical and spiritual relationship… a bond built on a life freely given to all.”

He played two spellbinding shows on the Concert Hall stage in May 2023, with the best of both performances represented here. The setlist showcases the most beloved songs of TOMMY’s career—classic compositions like “Tall Fiddler,” “Mombasa,” and “Country Wide,” recent fan favorites like “Fuel” and “Sail On,” his now iconic arrangement of “Classical Gas,” and his thrilling “Beatles Medley.”

“As a 15-year-old boy living in Circular Quay, I spent many a time walking past the Opera House,” he says. “I would daydream about what it must be like in there, what it would be like to perform there. After fifty years in the business, we finally got there!”

“Playing the shows for this recording was a dream come true for me,” TOMMY adds. “I felt so ready! I was surrounded by my team of brilliant people, and I was looking into the faces of so many loving and happy fans in the concert Hall. The momentum and power in these hours spent playing music, is perfectly captured and preserved here on this record. I hope you can feel the intensity of our musical and spiritual relationship…a bond built on a life freely given to all.”

A noted fingerstyle guitarist, EMMANUEL frequently threads three different parts simultaneously into his material, operating as a one-man band who handles the melody, the supporting chords and the bass all at once. You can hear his wizardry captured brilliantly on LIVE AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE.

Here’s the album’s track listing:

ABOUT TOMMY EMMANUEL:

TOMMY EMMANUEL has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. At the age of six, the Grammy® Award winner was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a C.P.G. (Certified Guitar Player) by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. He’s piled up numerous accolades, including two Grammy Award nominationstwo ARIA Awards from the Australian Recording Industry Association (the Aussie equivalent of the Recording Academy); repeated honors in the Guitar Player magazine reader’s poll including a cover story for their August 2017 issue; a cover feature for Vintage Guitar’s July 2020 issue; and was Music Radar’s reader’s poll #1 winner of the Ten Best Acoustic Guitarists in The World (December 2019). He has also earned the “Lifetime Achievement” Award from The National GUITAR Museum. A noted fingerstyle guitarist, EMMANUEL frequently threads three different parts simultaneously into his material, operating as a one-man band who handles the melody, the supporting chords and the bass all at once. His talents, which translate in any language, carry him to the far corners of the globe, but EMMANUEL never plays the same show twice, and he improvises big chunks of every date. That leaves him open to those technical imperfections, though they also provide some of the humanity to an other-worldly talent.

In June 2021, Rock’n’roll band RIVAL SONS delivered two live performances from Catalina Island, CA. They were originally streamed via VEEPS to fans at home across the world, many of whom were still in lockdown because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

RIVAL SONS set out from their homes in L.A. and Long Beach, and on a friend’s yacht they sailed over to Catalina Island with all their equipment and their crew, to perform in the Catalina Casino for global audiences. Frontman Jay Buchanan comments: “‘Pair Of Aces’ was recorded over two days in May of 2021 at the Casino in Avalon Bay on Santa Catalina Island, California. Part One (‘Before The Fire’) was recorded in the ballroom on May 19th and part two (‘Rival Sons’ EP) was recorded in the historic theater on May 20th.”

At the time, the band stated: “We’ve all been through so much this past year and a half. We have longed to be on the road playing for you. As you know, we launched our label Sacred Tongue Recordings and have been re-releasing our early material. We felt that revisiting these first two records in a live, prestigious setting was the best way to give them the first-class treatment that our humble beginnings couldn’t provide.”

Now, for the first time, these performances will be available to watch on YouTube and to stream on audio platforms. Both performances will be premiered via YouTube and released in their entirety digitally. A PAIR OF ACES: LIVE FROM SANTA CATALINA ISLAND (PART 1) will be released on November 22; pre-save HERE. RSVP for the YouTube premiere HERE. A PAIR OF ACES: LIVE FROM SANTA CATALINA ISLAND (PART 2) will be released on December 13; pre-save HERE. Individual songs for both nights will also be made available the following day.

Buchanan states: “To finally release both audio and video of these performances feels good. When we recorded these performances, the band was neck deep in what was to become the DARKFIGHTER/LIGHTBRINGER collection so breaking away from all of that heavy lifting to go blow some dust off of our origin story felt amazing. It’s a raw, unfiltered glimpse at a band raging against the isolation of the times.”

Watch two preview clips of RIVAL SONS performing “I Want More” (from Night #1) HERE and “Soul” (from Night #2) HERE.

Santa Catalina Island is a rocky island, off the coast of Southern California in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. The island covers an area of about 75 square miles. The Catalina Casino is a 92-year-old building built by The Wrigleys. Dominating the Avalon landscape from its regal perch along the bay, the casino exemplifies the style and romance of Catalina Island.

Buchanan elaborates, “It had been a dream of mine to play the Casino since I’d gone there as a child. Through the pandemic years we’d had the intention to record a live stream, but we’d been turned off by how terribly we’d seen it go for so many bands. We wanted to record a performance where we were just playing for each other without an audience. Generate the energy together for the sake of doing it. Along with everyone else, we hadn’t been able to tour or play shows at all in over fifteen months and it was killing us.”

Guitarist Scott Holiday comments: “You can see Catalina Island from the beach town I live in. I’ve been visiting it for years. Every time I’ve gone, I’ve made sure to visit the old historic casino that sits proudly at one end of the harbor in Avalon. And every time I’ve taken the tour I’ve thought the same thing…wouldn’t it be so great to play in these rooms and make a live film? And so…Rival Sons did just that.”

A group of people walking on a dock Description automatically generatedPhoto by Rick Horn (Download HERE)

At the time the band stated: “It is beautiful, and perfectly exudes how we wanted to portray these recordings.” Scott elaborates: “In recognition of the 10-year anniversary of our first 2 albums, we played each album in its entirety over 2 different nights. One night in the ballroom (in the round!) performing ‘Before the Fire,’ and the next night we played the self-titled record in the old movie theatre. It was every bit as cool and interesting as I’d hoped. A real honor and pleasure to fill this beautiful place with sound. The director did a great job capturing it for everyone to share in the experience with us and now it will be available to listen and watch anytime you’d like.”

Before The Fire, originally recorded in 2009 with producer (and now 9x Grammy Award winner) Dave Cobb, was RIVAL SONS’ debut album, and includes the fan favorites “Tell Me Something,” “Memphis Sun,” and “On My Way.”

The Rival Sons six-song EPoriginally recorded in 2010, again with Dave Cobb—was the release which led to the band first getting signed. It includes tracks such as “Get What’s Coming,” “Torture,” “Radio,” “Sacred,” “Tongue,” and “Soul,” which are all fan favorites.

The band promised that “Each night will have its own surprises and songs will be delivered with a new presentation of who we are now.”

ABOUT RIVAL SONS:
Rival Sons play rock ‘n’ roll in its purest form without apology or pretense. They simply plug in, turn up, and rip on a path of their own. Along the way, they’ve architected a critically acclaimed catalogue, including Pressure & Time [2011], Head Down [2012], Great Western Valkyrie [2014], Hollow Bones [2016], and FERAL ROOTS [2019]. The latter represented a creative and critical high watermark, scoring a pair of GRAMMY® Award nominations in the categories of “Best Rock Album” and “Best Rock Performance” for the single “Too Bad.” Elevating the band to another level, “Do Your Worst” vaulted to #1 at Rock Radio as their biggest hit to date, tallying north of 60 million streams and counting. Speaking to their impact, Rolling Stone attested, “Rival Sons have done their part to introduce new fans to rock. Beyond sharing stages with everyone from Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, and AC/DC to Guns N’ Roses and Lenny Kravitz, they’ve ignited television shows such as The Late Late Show with James Corden. During 2021, they launched their own label Sacred Tongue Recordings distributed by Thirty Tigers and celebrated the anniversary of their debut album with live streamed performances from Catalina Island Casino.

Hand-picked by Black Sabbath for their final tour, they’ve held their own on stage with the greats like The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, and Lenny Kravitz in addition to blowing the roof off television staples such as The Late Late Show with James Corden, Jools Holland, and Jimmy Kimmel.

In 2023, they continued to subvert expectations with two full-length LPs—DARKFIGHTER and LIGHTBRINGER. Though the genesis of these albums is intertwined, they also speak to the band’s perpetual progression forward.

The band once played over 250 shows in a year, and they are regulars on the festival circuit both through Europe and North America. One of the most hard-working rock’n’roll bands out there, 2024 saw the band complete extensive European festival dates throughout the summer, and then embark on the “Two Headed-Beast” tour with Clutch across North America.

MEGADETH Celebrate 30th Anniversary Of First-Ever Band Website—Megadeth, Arizona—And ‘Youthanasia’ Album; Read A Dave Mustaine Q&A

DATE: NOVEMBER 8, 2024

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN/KELLY WALSH/MITCH SCHNEIDER, SRO PR

MEGADETH
CELEBRATE 30th ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST-EVER
BAND WEBSITE
MEGADETH, ARIZONA—
AND ‘YOUTHANASIA’ ALBUM

READ A
DAVE MUSTAINE
Q&A BELOW

In October 1994, MEGADETH and their label took a chance with a new venture. To celebrate the release of the YOUTHANASIA album, the pioneering band established Megadeth, Arizona. It was the first-ever band website on the Internet.

The website—as Billboard (October 31, 2024) noted in a story celebrating its anniversary—was “based on the location of the band’s new studio in Phoenix,” and “was the concept for the first-ever artist website. In addition to the chat room, called the Megadiner, the site featured an art and digital-postcard repository, Vic’s Cactus Hut and Souvenir Shop, a newspaper titled Horrorscopes and links to videos and online-radio tracks.”

“When the internet came into our lives, we really didn’t understand it, just like anyone else,” MEGADETH founder Dave Mustaine explains. “But we had the greatest opportunity because we were the ones chosen to be the guinea pig. When the people over at Capitol had shown us what this was, the basic layout and some of the artwork, the images were all cool. The woman that had done the images had done a bunch of great images and made it really look cool like the stickers that are on the back of campers and shit like that, so I thought it was really great and exciting. Again, no one really knew what it was, so once we clicked on the launch button and it started all whizzing and banging and all that kind of stuff, it was remarkable. There’s been no looking back since.” (See below for DAVE Q&A about Megadeth, Arizona).

Meanwhile, the multi-platinum-selling and GRAMMY® Award-winning rockers just wrapped their U.S. tour which followed successful runs in Latin America (Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and México) and Europe (Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, and more) and garnered stellar reviews (see below). Next up, MEGADETH will head into the studio to record new music, and look for additional dates to be announced for 2025. Here’s some critical feedback from MEGADETH’s recent tour:

“Dave Mustaine and company steamrolled Houston with a setoff of hits encompassing their 40+ year career, highlighted by ‘Angry Again,’ ‘Hangar 18,’ ‘Sweating Bullets,’ ‘Trust’ and the smash ‘Symphony Of Destruction’…The light show was nothing short of phenomenal, especially during songs like ‘Tornado Of Souls’ and ‘Dystopia.’”
KNAC (Houston, TX, 8/3/24)

“Standout songs like ‘Trust’ and ‘Peace Sells’ made it easy to forget there were even two other bands on the bill, but when Megadeth ripped through ‘Mechanix’ it was sheer bliss.”
PHOENIX NEW TIMES (Phoenix, AZ , 8/8/24)

“In 2022, when Megadeth released their sixteenth album The Sick, The Dying…And the Dead, it was not just an album that fans loved, it was also one of the band’s most successful. Hearing the title-track of the album kick off Megadeth’s set for the evening really brought the point home – you just don’t mess with the best…Megadeth always puts on a clinic and what separated them from everyone over a period of four decades.”
CRYPTIC ROCK (Denver, CO, 8/6/24)

“A blistering, hour and a half set filled with a voracious amount of classic Megadeth thrash…”
WILL TO ROCK (Los Angeles, CA, 8/9/24)

“Something about this Megadeth show felt particularly special above any other that I’ve seen in recent years. The band was truly firing on all cylinders, and by the time the opening notes rang out on ‘Holy Wars…The Punishment Due,’ I was exhausted and completely satisfied. Decades later, Megadeth is still a band worth seeing live.”
SF SHAMELESS (San Francisco, CA, 8/11/24)

“The thunderous chant of “MEGADETH, MEGADETH, MEGADETH” echoed through the venue, setting the tone for the fans’ unwavering enthusiasm throughout the band’s entire performance…Attending a Megadeth concert is a must for metal fans of all ages.”
LA METAL MEDIA (Phoenix, AZ, 8/8/24)

“Dave Mustaine has not lost a step, and his current lineup featuring James LoMenzo on bass and backing vocals, Dirk Verbeuren (Drums), and Teemu Mäntysaari (guitars and backing vocals) did not fail to deliver an explosive set featuring their defining songs from all eras. The highlights of the 17-song set were ‘Angry Again,’ ‘Sweating Bullets,’ ‘Skin O’ My Teeth,’ and ‘Countdown to Extinction’- delivered with an intensity unmatched on recorded medium to an ecstatic crowd that remained on their feet from the first note to the fading refrain of the encore.”
NM ENTERTAINS (Albuquerque, NM, 8/5/24)

“Mustaine was a transfixing figure onstage, his signature flowing hair rippling in the breeze as he ripped solo after solo and led the band through songs from 11 different albums in his catalog.”
ROCK CELLAR MAGAZINE (Los Angeles, CA, 8/15/24)

“Dave Mustaine was on fire on both nights of the tour in LA…There are just not enough successful words to describe Megadeth’s performance on this evening and throughout the tour.”
METAL INSIDER (Los Angeles, CA, 8/15/24)

“Megadeth brought their iconic thrash metal mastery to West Palm Beach, and fans of all ages converged to witness one of the most legendary bands in metal… The energy in the amphitheater was electric as Mustaine’s signature riffs and snarling vocals reverberated through the crowd… Megadeth’s performance was a masterclass in precision and passion—brutal yet technical, polished yet raw.”
CBS 12 NEWS (West Palm Beach, FL, 8/25/24)

“Megadeth’s concert at PNC Music Pavilion Friday may not have been a comeback, but it sure felt like one. A triumphant one in fact. Aided by a killer light show and a trio of seasoned (yet still a bit younger) musicians, 62-year-old Dave Mustaine and his band were in better form than I’d ever seen them.”
CHARLOTTE OBSERVER (9/7/24)

Megadeth pulled zero punches with an all-killer-no-filler setlist…Megadeth is a must-see band for any metal fan. Witnessing this level of energy and impact they carry with each note, riff, guitar solo, and bass groove can only be experienced with your own eyes and ears in person, not through a video, to appreciate this level of high-level, unparalleled showmanship.”
NEW NOISE MAGAZINE (Tinley Park, IL, 9/3/24)

“Megadeth’s creator and sole original member, lead singer and guitarist Dave Mustaine, conjured the vigor that made him a heavy-metal icon on the band’s classic material.  His trademark biting vocal delivery on fan favorite ‘Sweating Bullets’ earned some of the loudest and most sustained cheers of the evening, and on ‘Symphony of Destruction,’ he delivered his best and longest guitar solo of the evening.”

DAVE MUSTAINE Q&A

Q: Without a model, how did you know what would be appealing to fans?

DAVE MUSTAINE (DM): “You know, we didn’t have a model to do that so the only way that I knew that this was going to be appealing to the fans was my experience as a tape trader in the very beginning. When I was in my first band Panic, and then freshly into Metallica, we would trade tapes with people around the world and people would write letters, if you could believe that–Jeez, snail mail back in the day –but we also had really cool other magazines that would tell us stuff that was happening. This cut that down from weeks to get a reply from one of your friends to just a couple of seconds.

With the way that the website was set up, we didn’t really know much about it with the layout or anything like that because when you think about the normal blueprint of stuff and when they say that there is a room here and a room there, you think about a two-dimensional drawing and the overview, looking down into a floor plan. So for me, thinking about what all these different rooms are, it was, I don’t know, maybe a misnomer. It didn’t work for my mind’s eye to see what the layout of what this internet and this website and this chat room would be, but I figured out that that stuff didn’t matter, it was just a word. As we clicked on other stuff like photos and mp3s and then we got into more of the advanced stuff–the chat room and so on–that was something that just blew everybody’s mind.”

Q: There’s a funny story about a call with Gene Simmons, can you recount it?

DM: “When Megadeth Arizona was launched, a lot of people went there because they couldn’t understand, the same way that I couldn’t, what all of these rooms were on the internet and having a chat room and so on. So it was really exciting one by one as we would hear people that noticed it and I was blown away when I heard from one of my favorite musicians and rockstars, Gene Simmons. Legend has it, he said ‘I want a website just like Mustaine’s’ and you can imagine how stoked I was to hear that. And I had asked his manager, Doc McGee, and I had gotten a video sent back to me of Gene repeating what he had said. So hats off to you Gene. Love you guys!”

Q: Media and the internet has changed so drastically since the launch of the site.  What/how as a band are you continuing to engage your audience?

DM: “When we first started out, we were stuck having to write to our fans, whether it was typing letters out on typewriters if you can believe that, or getting a handwritten letter, and I used to do that a lot, in fact I got something that was a photocopy just the other day from one of my friends of a letter that I had sent them and it was really nostalgic and cool. But you’re trying to conduct business and when you want to be an international band, it sucked. When we started playing, a lot of the bands we knew in town, they really didn’t look at things like it was going to be an international thing. They were just worried about being popular in their hometown, which for me, never crossed my mind, I wanted to be the biggest band in the world, so we would write, write, write. We would trade tapes with people around the world. Every once in a while, I would pick up the phone and make a long-distance phone call and have to deal with the shock of seeing the phone bill later. But once the Megadeth Arizona site started, that was great. We were able to push the launch button on this site and go into the Megadiner and like I said before, anyone that was a member of Megeadiner in the beginning are definitely IT. They have tremendous street credibility. Now, with the chats and stuff that had happened with the launch of Megadiner, people have chat rooms everywhere. We were just in a chat room the other day getting tech support. You gotta remember that a chat room is a chat room. It was really neat to be able to develop all of this stuff together with the fans that we have become friends with. Megadeth.com was born out of Megadeth Arizona and that has led to some really long lasting friendships. I’m looking forward to the party tonight.

Q: Will you be doing anything on the current site to honor the anniversary? Should fans be looking for any easter eggs?

DM: “In honor of the 30th anniversary for Youthanasia and Megadeth Arizona, I participated in a chat room on the Megadeth Discord server. Fans were able to ask questions and chat with me directly, in real time, just like back in the day. Before the chat started, everyone watched a stream of our old documentary, ‘Evolver,’ which was cool. We are also adding something special to Megadeth.com to pay tribute to Megadeth Arizona and some of the rooms from the past like Megadiner, Vic’s Cactus Hut, and the Digital Drive in if you haven’t seen it already. There will be some easter eggs you can find if you play around with the page and search hard enough.”

Q: The website launch was tied to the release of Youthanasia, which means that album is also celebrating an anniversary.  The album was recorded in Arizona, how was the recording process different than in a studio in LA, NY or another big city?

DM: “Youthanasia was recorded in Arizona, but it could’ve been the moon for all I care. We built the different sound enclosures for each artist, and we built a control room for Max Norman to work in, and we had to get this gigantic console and get that moved out to Arizona and into this control room we had built. That was cool if you were taking a shop class in highschool or something, but having to go build a studio you have to build a record in…I don’t know. I liked it, but it was unnecessary.”
