Look for D.D. VERNI & THE CADILLAC BAND to release their debut album LET’S RATTLE September 17 (via MVD) on the heels of two singles + videos, Cadillac Manand “Olivia…that’s Who!”. Expect high-energy original swingin’ and rockin’ big-band sound from D.D. VERNI, the songwriter/founding member/bassist for heavy metal pioneers Overkill who’ve sold millions of records worldwide and have released 19 studio albums dating back to their 1985 debut album. Pre-order the album here, or pre-save the album here.

The band filmed the video for “Cadillac Man,” the album’s first single, at the Vogel (Count Basie Center for the Arts) in Red Bank, NJ, where they’ll perform their first-ever show on Saturday, October 30 Tickets are on sale now.

“We have our first show coming up and we’re very excited!” says D.D. “The more you move through life the less firsts there are, so I am pumped for this first-ever show. I’m now putting together a band that will feature a bunch of the same musicians from the ‘Cadillac Man’ video, with rehearsals this month and next. The show will feature most songs off ‘Let’s Rattle’ as well as a handful of classic rock and roll songs.  I think people are very curious and they’re not exactly sure what to expect…just like me!  But that’s half the fun–all I know is we’ll do our best to blow the roof off the joint.”

The set list at the Vogel will be comprised of songs from the album including its second single, “Olivia…that’s Who!” of which D.D. says: “While the song is about my daughter, I think it speaks to anyone who has a bubbly outgoing spirited girl in their life,” says D.D. “It could be your mom, wife or girlfriend.” Read an interview with D.D. about the album here.

LET’S RATTLE is the result of VERNI’s longtime dream of recording a big band album, as his love for the sound dates back many years. The New Jersey-based artist began by writing a fantastic collection of soon-to-be big band classics. Next he recruited longtime Brian Setzer Orchestra upright bassist, John “Spazz” Hatton, to do horn arrangements and play upright bass, while bass player D.D. switched things up playing some guitar on the album. Then D.D. brought in the LA based horn section from Phat Cat Swinger to play the horns and added Brian Setzer Orchestra drummer and current Doobie Brothers member, Tony Pia. Add jazz pianist Dave Moscoe and Hot Rod guitarist Damian Bacci, and you have a star-studded line-up of big band greatness that made this album shake and swing.

With songs like “Cadillac Man,” “Shake It Swing It” and “Olivia…that’s Who!” the album features 13 tracks (nine originals and four covers), was produced by VERNI and mixed by Greg Reely (Coldplay, Sarah McLachlan, Overkill), and recorded in Los Angeles and New Jersey.

Powerhouse,” another highlight from LET’S RATTLE, will also be performed at the upcoming show. “I was not even aware that was the name of the song,” says D.D.   “But everybody knows the riff from the old ‘Looney Tunes’ cartoons.  When the factory starts up at the Flockheed Eggcraft factory and all the chickens are laying eggs, or a number of other different times when it was used through Warner Bros cartoons, ‘Road Runner’ and ‘Wile E. Coyote.’ etc.  And I remembered that Blitz [Overkill’s lead vocalist] had suggested to me that maybe we could somehow use that as an Overkill intro tape, but I couldn’t think of a way.  But it stayed with me as I feel like that’s the song that runs in my head all the time–hahaha.  I have a lot going on, always busy, so it suited me.  After I researched it some, I learned it was a Raymond Scott song–and as I listened, I said it’s such a great riff, I wished there was more of it or some lyrics. And then got the idea to just add to it and change the arrangement until it felt a little bit more like a song rather than just an instrumental.  So I kept all the bit’s I like the best and added the female backing vocals to the riff part.  I wanted to keep the title so I wrote the lyrics from there.  I decided the ‘Powerhouse’ should be the devil and wound up writing lyrics about selling your soul to the lady in red, knowing it was not the right thing to do, but knowing you would do it again.”

“Real blood and guts rock and roll that bleeds with soul and redemption.”
Jesse Malin, 2021

NYC rocker LORNE BEHRMAN, the singer-songwriter-guitarist who previously played in The Dimestore Haloes, L.E.S. Stitches, The Dead Tricks and most recently The Sweet Things, today (September 16) has shared the video for Sandcastles.” It’s a tense and urgent rocker marked by an ominous guitar riff, spooky Farfisa organ and chilling lyrics about the effects of childhood sexual abuse (“What was done to me was done to you, I know/You’re just the messenger, I know”). “Sandcastles” marks the second release from LORNE’s debut solo EP WHEN I HIT THE FLOOR that’s due October 15 on Spaghetty Town Records.

The fittingly dark video for “Sandcastles,” directed by David J Barron and filmed late at night in NYC’s Central Park, was premiered yesterday (September 15) by New Noise. The “Sandcastles” single will be available tomorrow (September 17) at all streaming platforms.

The WHEN I HIT THE FLOOR EP was launched in August with the rocking-but-reflective title cut “When I Hit The Floor”–a song about “substance abuse and hitting bottom,” says LORNE—the video for which was premiered by Glide. The outlet praised LORNE’s “power chord ethos, cryptic electricity, and gritty voice,” adding: “The incisive songwriting stance Behrman takes on this unapologetic rocker holds nothing back with its blunt account of a hard-living past.”

The four-song EP was produced by Matt Chiaravalle (Warren Zevon, Joe Bonamassa, Spacehog) at NYC’s Mercy Sound Studios and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Joe Lambert. LORNE played all the guitars, wrote all the songs, and sang all the leads. Joining him are drummer Hector Lopez (Alejandro Escovedo/The Sweet Things), keyboardist Rob Clores (Jesse Malin, Black Crowes, Alejandro Escovedo), and singer Dana Athens (Jane Lee Hooker).

Below are quotes from LORNE about “Sandcastles,” the song’s lyrics and more info about the EP.

“SANDCASTLES”
Q&A WITH LORNE BEHRMAN

–“Sandcastles” is a tense and urgent rocker marked by an ominous guitar riff, spooky Farfisa organ and chilling lyrics (“What was done to me was done to you, I know/You’re just the messenger, I know”) about sexual abuse cycles: how hurting people hurt others. What inspired you to write this song and the catharsis you went through during the process?

LORNE: When I was a little kid, I took karate classes, and there was an instructor there who promised they would give me a kit to build sandcastles if I went with them into the bathroom. This began a very stressful and painful time for me. It was sexual abuse, mind games, and secrets. I was a really sensitive kid—I still am really sensitive—and I felt in over my head, but scared to tell anyone. I remember thinking I wish my soul could disappear into the calf of my leg—like I felt like I had to be at karate, but I wished I didn’t have to be present. I have the best parents—open, loving, and there for me, always—but I had too much fear and shame to tell anyone. I felt like I deserved this, so I just dealt with it, and eventually moved on from karate class, though I would experience more predatorial people and have more painful experiences until I addressed this and really got help.

I would always bring this stuff up when I was drinking, and share with anyone around, but I couldn’t talk about it with people in the daylight. It was always there, hindering my trust, my connection with others, intimacy, body images, feeling safe, and even feeling safe alone—as if I was going to attack myself. It was the nightmare roommate in my head I never wanted.

I eventually got help, and spoke to many people about this. I got a lot of comfort. One person told me to pray for the person who did this to me. I wanted to punch this guy in the face. I remember walking home that night and just being livid—they don’t understand, I thought. But it dawned on me, that the person who did that to me, probably had that done to them. All forms of abuse are passed on until you stop them. Not long after, I wrote the song.

As far as a catharsis, I’ve heard people say if you shine a light on darkness it goes away. So, this is me, putting that saying into real life. Singing this in the studio was very hard for me, but my producer Matt Chiaravalle made me feel comfortable. Leaving that vocal booth and finishing the vocals of the song, I felt lighter—like a left a part of my history behind. Hearing it mixed and mastered, and knowing it will be out there scares me. I feel naked and vulnerable. That said, when I listen to the song, I feel like I am speaking up for that little kid that endured that private hell.

–The David J Barron-directed video for “Sandcastles” is fittingly dark, given the subject matter and other lyrics like: “What hides in me, haunts you, I know.” David has said: “It was shot in color, made in to black and white then rephotographed in color. The palette chose me. I like the black and white but needed it to be more degraded and violated feeling.”

LORNE: I had nightmares about shooting that video. Director David J Barron had this very powerful concept of capturing the fear and darkness inherent in the song. The camera chases me, the nighttime is overpowering, and the color palette enhances the horror of it all.

We shot it around 10 PM at night in Central Park, and let me tell you, nighttime at that park is still scary, haha. We shot it on a throughway that bisects the east and west side. The sidewalk was so narrow, and cars whizzed past you so quickly. It felt like we could get hit at any time, and then there were some “characters” passing in and out of the night. We shot the parts of me playing guitar right after.

Making the video brought up a lot of stuff. Thankfully, David is a deep guy and I could talk to him. He had that balance of knowing the shots he wanted, but also being sensitive to what I was going through. When the outside parts were over, I was so happy to be safe at home, it was like I was away from the horror. Seeing the video, I feel proud of myself. Like I finally took a stand, and I feel like I did it in a way that’s me.

–At the end of the video, the chyron reads: “Dedicated to survivors of sexual trauma everywhere.” Can you talk about the importance of survivors sharing their stories and emotions?

LORNE: I started sharing my stories in the last two years. When you speak about this, and someone says to you, I went through that, too, it’s like feeling like you’re not alone for the first time. Like you have a best friend that experienced the same minefield in their mind, and you can talk about this. The shame goes away, the feeling of being damaged goods go away, and your abnormal feelings feel normal, for once.

–Since you’ve shared your soul in the song + video, can you tell us which introspective artists, and which songs of theirs, have impacted you as a songwriter?

LORNE: The album Black Celebration by Depeche Mode probably influenced this song the most. I used to listen to Black Celebration all the way through as a teen, and it felt like a purging of bad feelings. When it was over, I felt clean inside. The final track, “But Not Tonight,” felt like I was all cried out and at peace with things. Also, the song, “Walking In My Shoes,” was really big for me. I guess, for me, it felt empowering maybe in a self-pitying way—like, “deal with my crazy mind for a day, haha, and then let’s talk.”

Another writer I really admire for her candor and boldness is Natalie Merchant. Her solo album Tigerlily really hit me. At the time I heard it, I was a punk purist, but the writing really got to me, especially the songs “River” and “I May Know The Word.” Her writing is so impactful. That album had this smoky emotionality that I wanted to one day conjure in my own way. I definitely was thinking of that album with this song.

I am a late bloomer as a songwriter, and the solo music of John Frusciante has been huge for me. The album To Record Only Water For Ten Days felt like it whisked the listener away to this private world for dark feelings. The opening track, “Going Inside,” is like an introverted person’s anthem. Jesse Malin has also been a huge influence on me. He writes with such vulnerability, but there is always a feeling of hope. Songs that really inspired me from his catalog are “Scars Of Love” from the album, The Heat, and “The Dreamers” from the album, New York Before The War.

“Sandcastles,” the lyrics:

What was done to me was done to you, I know
You’re just the messenger, I know
Were you frightened, and did you sit still?
Shame pulls you in/breaks your will
What was done to me was done to you, I know

Chorus: On the floor/dreamed of sandcastles/never got up
Ooooh, Ooooh, Oooooh
Can’t shut the door/dream of sandcastles/ I feel your touch everyday
Ooooh, Ooooh, Oooooh

What hides in me, haunts you, I know
We were just kids, I know
Do you forgive, is the enemy within?
Buried my pain in nights of sin
What hides in me, haunts you, I know

Chorus: On the floor/dreamed of sandcastles/never got up
Ooooh, Ooooh, Oooooh
Can’t shut the door/dream of sandcastles/I feel your touch everyday
Ooooh, Ooooh, Oooooh

Accomplice Series Vol. 2 EP Cover

Acclaimed and Grammy®-nominated acoustic guitarist, singer and songwriter TOMMY EMMANUEL—one of five people ever named a CPG (Certified Guitar Player) by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins—today (September 10) has shared the single + video for Nashtownville.” It’s the third release from his four-song EP ACCOMPLICE SERIES VOL. 2 featuring Richard Smith, out today, September 10. The video was premiered yesterday (September 9) at Glide, which noted: “Emmanuel and Smith play off each other seamlessly creating an enrapturing acoustic duet that sounds bigger than its parts. With his nimble fingers, Emmanuel continues to up the ante, playing one note towards the vintage groundbreakers and another in his own influential present—’Nashtownville’ is no exception.” Listen to the EP, a tribute to their heroes Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins, at all streaming platforms here.

Richard Smith is the revered British fingerpicking guitarist who has performed or recorded along the way with Chet Atkins, Les Paul and Tommy Emmanuel, among others. The EP, a tribute to their heroes Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins, also contains “Serenade to Summertime” “Twitchy,” and “Baby’s Coming Home.”

“Nashtownville” was originally written by Chet Atkins and appears on the Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins album, ‘Me & Chet.’ Tommy and Richard’s interpretation of it, along with the other songs on their EP, was recorded at TuneSmith Studio outside of Nashville, TN in the spring of 2021. The video was filmed at the Chet Atkins statue in downtown Nashville, TN on the corner of Fifth Avenue North and Union Street. It was directed by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard for Neighborhoods Apart Productions (The Killers, Lilly Hiatt, John Prine) and features many special guests such as Mark Pritcher (from Chet Atkins Appreciation Society), Annie Sellick, Pat Bergeson, John Knowles (fellow CGP), Stuie French, and a few more of Tommy and Richard’s friends. The police officer is played by Richard Smith’s wife, (versatile cellist) Julie Adams.

In other news, Tommy and Richard will tour together this fall starting October 12. The dates are listed here: https://tommyemmanuel.com/tour/.

Richard is also on Tommy’s Guitar Camp in Nashville, which takes place September 23-27 at the Virgin Hotel: https://tommyemmanuelguitarcampusa.com/

Here’s a Q&A with Tommy and Richard about “Nashtownville” and the EP:

Q&A WITH
TOMMY EMMANUEL AND RICHARD SMITH
ABOUT THE NEWLY RELEASED EP
‘TOMMY EMMANUEL ACCOMPLICE SERIES VOL. 2 FEATURING RICHARD SMITH’

TOMMY EMMANUEL:

—There’s so much joyous guitar work on the EP. How did this collaboration with Richard come about and how did you guys first meet?

TOMMY: I heard about Richard through other players at the Chet Atkins events in Nashville, and when we first met up, we played until we were exhausted! I had found someone I could have the best time playing all the music I loved from my childhood and who had a similar attitude and energy!

—What are your thoughts about Richard’s playing and what do you feel you both artistically have achieved with this recording?

TOMMY: Richard and I both approached these recordings with a deep respect for our heroes. We added our own ideas but kept the authenticity of the original recordings present. We played these songs with much love and joy!  Richard’s knowledge and abilities to channel Jerry Reed’s parts is what is most important to me, as I trusted him completely. When you stay close to Chet and Jerry’s parts, you can’t help but make great music, well written!

—The arrangement here for “Serenade to Summertime” comes from the Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins album, ‘Me & Chet.’ Perfect, because you both have a strong connection to Chet. Can you talk about why this song resonates with you?

TOMMY: “Serenade” is a typical melodic piece that Chet would have chosen to showcase his tenderness in a musical setting. Richard really stayed close to Jerry’s perfectly honed part as the accompanist and I tried to perform the song without too many frills or embellishments, just heart and feeling…

—“Twitchy” was written by Jerry Reed and performed by Chet Atkins and Reed. Why do you find this song inspirational?

TOMMY: “Twitchy” is such a great composition–you get the feeling it’s been around forever. It’s also one of the great duets that only Jerry could write to have Chet play the melody and he works all the harmony around it and plays a solo as well. We’ve played it for audiences a thousand times and hope we can play it another thousand times!

—”Nashtownville” was written by Chet Atkins and appears on the Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins album, ‘Me & Chet.’ What drew you to take this song on?

TOMMY: “Nashtownville” is a Chet composition and we both love its simplicity, yet, how strong it is, musically. Chet was a wonderful writer, and this song proves that. It’s two and a half minutes of pure MOJO!

—“Baby’s Coming Home” was written by Jerry Reed, and Chet Atkins recorded it for his ‘Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed’ album. What quality does this song have that attracted you to record it?

TOMMY: “Baby’s Coming Home” is a wonderful song that is perfect for harmonies and solo sections that give the player and the listener everything they’re looking for!

—It’s exciting news that the two of you will tour together this November in America (having done shows in the past). What are you most looking forward to about this tour?

TOMMY: Playing this music to new audiences everywhere is such a joy, as most people haven’t seen players recreate these songs in front of them. It’s entertaining, surprising, and uplifting! When you are in the entertainment business, like us, you have a big desire to take people out of their normal existence and surprise them into another realm–music like this is your magic wand!

RICHARD SMITH

—There’s so much joyous guitar work on the EP. How did this collaboration with Tommy come about and how did you guys first meet?

RICHARD: Tommy asked me a while ago if I would like to do this tribute to Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed as part of his “Accomplice” series.  Of course, I had to do it!  Like Tommy, I’ve been playing their music all my life.  We both grew up on it. I first met Tommy back in 1996. He had played at a festival in France with the great Bay Area guitarist, Jim Nichols, who told him about me. I was living in England, where he had recently moved to, and he called up and came out to my family home. We jammed for hours that night.

—What are your thoughts about Tommy’s playing and what do you feel you both artistically have achieved with this recording?

RICHARD: Tommy has such an impeccable groove and such a personal touch and feel to his playing that has come about from listening to so many different musicians over the years. Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed were two very earlyiest influences for him. To pay tribute to these guys and play the tunes we grew up listening to, and put our own little stamp on them, felt like going full circle. This music is like mashed potatoes to both of us. It’s just so ingrained, that playing it is like falling off a log. You bring yourself and other influences into it, which just kind of happens naturally.

—The arrangement here for “Serenade to Summertime” comes from the Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins album, ‘Me & Chet.’ Perfect, because you both have a strong connection to Chet. Can you talk about why this song resonates with you?

RICHARD: On the original recording, Chet used a Del Vecchio resonator guitar. That instrument has a particularly beautiful tone and sustain. Tommy captures that beautifully with his Maton acoustic. That recording was probably the first time I’d ever heard that guitar sound. Jerry Reed’s back-up part is a huge part of the sound of that song.  The kind of rolling chords he used and the inversions he used were so beautifully constructed. Listening to it just takes me back to my childhood and when I first heard it.

—“Twitchy” was written by Jerry Reed and performed by Chet Atkins and Reed. Why do you find this song inspirational?

RICHARD: I think that tune is probably my favorite thumb-picking tune. It has such a great groove and such a simple melody. To me, it’s one of those tunes that just sounds like it grew there, like no one wrote it, and like it has just always existed. Those are the great songs to me. Songs and tunes that have melodies and chord structures that sound so obvious that you think “Of course! Why didn’t I think of that?” Another tune we both grew up on. It is also a pure duet. No band.

—”Nashtownville” was written by Chet Atkins and appears on the Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins album, ‘Me & Chet.’ What drew you to take this song on?

RICHARD: It was just another great song from that album that was addictive listening. As a student of the guitar and the music, you want to learn everything. It’s another one of those songs that any guitar player who had that album would have had a go at.

—“Baby’s Coming Home” was written by Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins recorded it for his ‘Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed’ album. What quality does this song have that attracted you to record it?

RICHARD: This is one of those tunes that every thumb-picker knows. A real standard among that crowd. Another simple melody with a great groove. These tunes are not known to the mainstream crowds, but there are guitar pickers dotted around all over the world  that will come out of the woodwork to meet like-minded folks at concerts or festivals and get together and play these kinds of tunes from records they all had. When I was at school, there wasn’t another kid in my school or any other local school that was listening to this stuff that I knew of. I’m sure it was the same for Tommy. But!!.. There were players out there. These records weren’t getting airplay like pop records, but there were a select few pickers out there buying these records. There must have been, or RCA would never have invested in putting more and more out there. You wonder who those people are, and where they are out there. When you meet them, it’s always great because you realize you were not alone in your pursuits and thirst for learning this music that was so obscure that it seemed like you were the only one listening to it.  At least, as a kid, that’s how it felt.  Playing these tunes with Tommy is always special.  We’d played all of them together over the years many times either jamming or on shows or festivals. I never get tired of playing them and I can feel that with Tommy, too.

—It’s exciting news that the two of you will tour together this November in America (having done shows in the past). What are you most looking forward to about this tour?

RICHARD: Oh yeah! Always a blast playing shows with Tommy. Playing the music, of course, is what I look forward to most, but being out west, too. AZ and TX.  I love the desert, you know. In certain places, I feel like I’m on Mars, or in a scene from the original “Planet of the Apes” movie.  Meeting new people, going to different places, or back to some of your favorite places. So many folks I’ve met think being on the road is such a tough life. To me, it’s like being on vacation and instead of living in one place, you kind of get to live everywhere. It’s a beautiful thing. Living everywhere, seeing so many places, doing what you love, and playing your favorite music with one of your all-time favorite musicians and people?  It makes me giddy. I can’t wait.

ABOUT TOMMY EMMANUEL:

TOMMY EMMANUEL has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a CPG (Certified Guitar Player) by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. He’s piled up numerous accolades, including two Grammy Award nominationstwo ARIA Awards from the Australian Recording Industry Association (the Aussie equivalent of the Recording Academy); repeated honors in the Guitar Player magazine reader’s poll including a cover story for their August 2017 issue; a cover feature for Vintage Guitar’s July 2020 issue; and was Music Radar’s reader’s poll #1 winner of the Ten Best Acoustic Guitarists in The World (December 2019). A noted fingerstyle guitarist, EMMANUEL frequently threads three different parts simultaneously into his material, operating as a one-man band who handles the melody, the supporting chords and the bass all at once. His talents, which translate in any language, carry him to the far corners of the globe, but EMMANUEL never plays the same show twice, and he improvises big chunks of every date. That leaves him open to those technical imperfections, though they also provide some of the humanity to an other-worldly talent. On May 8, 2020, he released a newly recorded career-spanning double album, THE BEST OF TOMMYSONGS, via CGP Sounds/Cruzen Street Records). YES, who are Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison and Billy Sherwood, today (September 1) have unveiled the video for “Dare To Know.” It marks the second single and video from their upcoming album THE QUEST, due out October 1 on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music and produced by Steve Howe. Watch the “Dare To Know” video here.

“’Dare To Know’ presents a guitar theme played within many different arrangements, with different chord structures and altered textures,” says Steve Howe. “The ‘idea’ mentioned in the first verse gets described later as an awakening to the subtle goings on within our bodies and mind, all geared to nature’s scheme of things, all fluctuating and rearranging according to the principles of life, as we know it. The centrepiece leaves the orchestra alone to elaborate and develop the way the theme is heard, then augments the closing minutes of the song as it rests, with an acoustic guitar cadenza.”

Much of the music for THE QUEST was “written in late 2019 with the rest in 2020,” says Howe. “We commissioned several orchestrations to augment and enhance the overall sound of these fresh new recordings, hoping that our emphasis on melody, coupled with some expansive instrumental solo breaks, keeps up the momentum for our listeners.”

The album was recorded across the globe. The sessions took place in the UK with Steve Howe, Geoff Downes and Jon Davison, while Alan White and Billy Sherwood got together in the studio in the US. “Billy Sherwood and myself did all the rhythm sections, bass and drum, in America,” says Alan White, “down in Los Angeles at Uncle Studios, where he works a lot. It helps when you’ve got a good place to work,” Alan laughs, “and Billy’s really good on the recording desk, so we got things down relatively quickly. I spent quite a while studying the music before I went down to LA so I was prepared.”

YES recently launched a video for the album’s opening track, “The Ice Bridge.” Watch the video here.

YES Story

For half a century YES have been the definitive band of the progressive music genre, the band by which all others are judged. Their ground-breaking albums of the 70s set the standard for the genre and influenced countless others who followed in their wake.

The current line-up of YES was completed in 2015 when Billy Sherwood replaced founder member Chris Squire, at Squire’s insistence, as he bravely fought a losing battle with leukaemia. Since then, YES have concentrated on touring with their Album Series tours, each featuring a classic YES album in its entirety. During this period YES have released three live albums Topographic Drama – Live Across America (2017), Yes Live 50 (2019) and The Royal Affair Tour: Live in Las Vegas (2020).

The music of YES has endured over the years and has been handed down through generations of music lovers.

BRIAN SETZER Marks Today’s Release Of ‘Gotta Have The Rumble,’ By Sharing Third Single + Video For ‘Rockabilly Banjo”

DATE: AUGUST 27, 2021

FROM: MITCH SCHNEIDER/MARCEE RONDAN

BRIAN SETZER
MARKS TODAY’S RELEASE OF
‘GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE,’
BY SHARING THIRD SINGLE + VIDEO for
‘ROCKABILLY BANJO”

WATCH THE VIDEO HERE
LISTEN TO THE FULL ALBUM HERE

BRIAN SETZER is marking today’s release (August 27) of GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE, his first solo album in 7 years, by sharing the album’s third single + video, “Rockabilly Banjo.” The song, written by the iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner with Stephen “Dibbs” Preston (The Rockats), is a spirited countrified rockabilly song that shines a light on SETZER’s banjo playing, with Paul Franklin on pedal steel guitar. Watch the fun video, with vintage ‘50s black and white footage here. The album is now available physically (CD) and digitally via Surfdog Records, with the vinyl album due this fall (release date TBA). Listen to the full album here.

“Me and Dibbs were hanging around, and it was one of the few times ever that someone gives me a song that’s just the music and not the lyrics,” says SETZER. “And Dibbs said, ‘hey you play banjo, I love the way you play it.’ You know, banjo makes everybody smile and everybody’s after me to play more banjo. And Dibbs said, ‘hey, I got a song, what do you think of this?’ and I thought ‘Wow! Let’s clean it up.’ So that’s the last track. The legendary Paul Franklin is on steel. It was just a fun and good way out of the mess called 2020!”

“Rockabilly Banjo” follows the album’s first two singles/videos: Checkered Flag,” co-written with SETZER’s bandmate in The Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom, and “Smash Up On Highway One” a collaboration with SETZER’s frequent writing partner Mike Himelstein.

Produced by Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell and Cheap Trick), GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE contains 11 all-original songs, all written or co-written by SETZER, and was recorded in Minneapolis (Setzer’s adopted hometown) and Nashville. GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE is a red-hot album from start to finish–American music amped up to 10–with songs that are full of dynamism and bravado. Highlights include “Checkered Flag,” “Smash Up On Highway One,” “Drip Drop,” “The Cat with 9 Wives,” “One Bad Habit” and “Rockabilly Banjo.”

“Obviously, it’s a reference to my motorcycles and hot rods, something that hasn’t changed since I was 15 years old,” says SETZER about the album title GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE. “I still have the same passion for going fast and adrenaline. But it’s also about my hearing problem with tinnitus–the ringing of the ear. It was pretty bad, and I realized that I couldn’t play the way I wanted to. As I recovered, standing in front of a small amplifier just didn’t cut it. The sound from my big amp makes the guitar rumble. Which is a big part of my sound. I was really despondent for a while because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do that again. So, ‘Gotta Have The Rumble’ refers to both of those things.”

ABOUT BRIAN SETZER:

Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner BRIAN SETZER has achieved one career milestone after another. He’s sold millions of albums and is a “Musician’s Musician” credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles. Setzer is widely credited for taking two forgotten genres, rockabilly and swing, adding his own blend of gunpowder and rockin’ style, and completely reinventing and single-handedly resurrecting them in the process. Along the way, he has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records and received the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 19-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist. He is consistently cited as one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. SETZER is also, fittingly, in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. On the live front, Setzer has headlined venues and festivals worldwide, including a 1983 headlining slot on the iconic US Festival in California, The Playboy Jazz Festival, a three-night, sold-out headlining run at the Hollywood Bowl with the 98-piece Philharmonic Orchestra, Woodstock ’99, and performing in front of more than 150,000 people as headliner of the Montreal Jazz Festival. His reach also includes films and TV, where his roles include portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran in the 1987 film, La Bamba, Fox’s “Beverly Hills 90210,” among many others, and he is one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of “The Simpsons” in 2002. That same year, SETZER was personally requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. SETZER had the honor of being invited in 2006 to perform at the White House for the President of the United States. Also in 2006, he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame with the Stray Cats. In 2014, SETZER received the distinct honor of being asked by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 “Stray Cat” guitar, joining an elite collection of iconic treasures at the museum.

D.D. VERNI & THE CADILLAC BAND today (August 18) unveil “Olivia…that’s Who!” the second single and video from their debut album LET’S RATTLE, due out September 17 (via MVD). As with the album’s lead single and video Cadillac Man,” the new single underlines the high-energy original swingin’ and rockin’ big-band sound from D.D. VERNI, the songwriter/founding member/bassist for heavy metal pioneers Overkill who’ve sold millions of records worldwide and have released 19 studio albums dating back to their 1985 debut album. Listen to the song, which D.D. wrote about his daughter Olivia, here and watch the quick moving video, comprised of storyboard illustrations, here. Pre-order the album here or pre-save the album here

“While the song is about my daughter, I think it speaks to anyone who has a bubbly outgoing spirited girl in their life,” says D.D. “It could be your mom, wife or girlfriend. And I think the drawings capture the spirit of the song. The song lyric says “There’s always enough love to go round” and I think that’s the spirit of the song and the drawings. It’s about how a girl like that in your life can brighten your day and make things always seem OK.” Read more quotes about the song and video below.

In addition, D.D. VERNI & THE CADILLAC BAND have confirmed their first-ever live show, Saturday, October 30 show at the Vogel (Count Basie Center for the Arts) in Red Bank, NJ, the same venue where they filmed the video for “Cadillac Man,” the album’s first single. Tickets are on sale now.

Q&A WITH D.D. VERNI ABOUT
THE “OLIVIA…THAT’S WHO!”: SINGLE + VIDEO

–For the “Olivia…that’s who!” video, what inspired you to have a video created with storyboard illustrations?

That was actually my wife Lisa. She thought a storyboard following the lyrics etc. would be a cool idea for a video for that song. I had worked on many projects with an illustrator named Gery Nible for years and she suggested I call him. So I reached out and he was very excited about the idea. We went back and forth on a bunch of ideas and character development, what people should look like and the style/tone for it. I would get sketches from Gery and I would send to Lisa and she would send to Olivia hahaha…so it was a fun project to work on. I really liked her storyboard idea, where it felt more like sketches rather than finished inked and color drawings. I am a comic book fan, as well as Pixar/Disney animated film fan. I have a ton of collectable toys and such from movies, so this was great chance to do a little of that with my own song. I had done an animated video a few records back and had so much fun doing it and this one was similar. Fun to see it come to life.

–How do you feel the video captures the spirit of the song?

While the song is about my daughter, I think it speaks to anyone who has a bubbly outgoing spirited girl in their life. It could be your mom, wife or girlfriend. And I think the drawings capture the spirit of the song. The song lyric says “There’s always enough love to go round” and I think that’s the spirit of the song and the drawings. It’s about how a girl like that in your life can brighten your day and make things always seem OK.

–Who directed the video and who did the illustrations?

The video was edited by Steven Bartashev who was the editor on the Cadillac Man video we just put out. I was really happy with how that turned out so I contacted him about doing this one as well. The illustrations were done by Gery Nible. As I said Gery is a friend who I have worked with on a bunch of projects before. We’ve done album art, t-shirts, all kinds of stuff. He has a similar DNA to mine as far as stuff we like and so the process of doing this was pretty easy. He really ran with the idea, I thought we could get by on a dozen or so drawings and I think it wound up more like 60+ . He even sent a video kind of walking us through it and his ideas which made it very easy to visualize what it would be like in the end.

–You’ve said that your second daughter Olivia told you: “‘where’s my song!’ and then on her 16th birthday I wrote and recorded “Olivia…that’s who!” What does Olivia think of her song and the video (if she’s seen it)?

She loves it! For years she would run around and tell people she has her own theme song. Now she has a video to go along with it.

PI JACOBS To Perform Saturday, August 28 Show At The Hotel Café

DATE: AUGUST 18, 2021

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN/MITCH SCHNEIDER

Pi Jacobs LA Show

AMERICANA ARTIST PI JACOBS
SET TO PERFORM
SATURDAY, AUGUST 28
AT HOTEL CAFÉ

SHOW FOLLOWS
AUGUST 13 RELEASE OF
NEW ALBUM
‘LIVE FROM MEMPHIS’
VIA BLACKBIRD RECORD LABEL

Acclaimed Americana singer, songwriter and musician PI JACOBS will perform a Saturday, August 28 show at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. This will mark the Los Angeles-based artist’s first show following the August 13 release of her latest album LIVE FROM MEMPHIS, her first album for the label and ninth overall, via Blackbird Record Label. Shows in Nashville (September 23 and 25), Washington DC (September 30), New York City (October 3) and her San Francisco hometown (October 15) are also on her concert itinerary.

LIVE FROM MEMPHIS peels back many layers of PI’s life and sensibility in both the songs and the story intro’s that she narrated for each song. The music on LIVE FROM MEMPHIS comes from PI’s live taping for Ditty TV, which was filmed without an audience. For the set list, she drew six songs from 2020’s Two Truths and a Lie and two others from 2017’s A Little Blue. But rather than using the between-songs banter intended for the viewing audience, she took a page from one of her favorite NPR podcasts and decided to share more of herself than ever before by narrating the songs with revealing intros.

An outstanding example of this is the new and third track “No Sin To Be Poor,” which is based on her own life growing up poor in Northern California. The song is accompanied by an imagery-rich animated video created by Turkish surreal artist Mertcan Mertbilek, who did the same honors for the album’s first release, First Thing Tomorrow.” Watch the “No Sin To Be Poor” video here, which was premiered by American Songwriter. Listen to the song here and the story intro here. Pre-order the album here.

With her blend of roots-rock swagger and storytelling soul, Pi Jacobs distinctively amplifies the concert experience on it places eight original songs alongside the self-narrated personal stories that shaped them. Recorded with a full band, the project offers a sincere and sometimes funny look at her formative years, her family relationships, and even a few lessons she’s learned along the way.

The LIVE FROM MEMPHIS track list is here.

Live From Memphis Cover

On the concert front, Pi Jacobs’ upcoming itinerary includes

THE THE, one of the most intriguing bands ever to emerge from England, today offer a preview of their upcoming album THE COMEBACK SPECIAL with the official live video for The Beat(en) Generation.” The album, due out October 29 in multiple audio as well as video formats, documents their triumphant 2018 Royal Albert Hall in London.

Originally featured on their Mind Bomb album in 1989, THE THE’s classic The Beat(en) Generation” now shines in a new light as Matt Johnson and band performed the song to a sold-out Royal Albert Hall nearly 30 years later. “The Beat(en) Generation” is now available as a single release on all streaming and download services.

The highlight of this multi-format release is an exquisitely designed 136-page art book, which tells the whole story behind THE COMEBACK SPECIAL with hundreds of behind-the-scenes photos, film stills, contributions and stories, as well as 6 discs including exclusive audio content, plus director Tim Pope’s film of the concert on both Blu-ray and DVD.

As another highlight of the new release, THE THE have also launched a variety of new exclusive merch items and bundles on the official album webstore: https://thethe.tmstor.es/

For a brand-new series of four exclusive THE THE prints, the band has teamed up with London’s Atom Gallery. Mark Perronet (print maker and co-owner of the gallery) had previously collaborated with Andy Dog, Matt Johnson’s late brother and designer of many of the group’s early sleeves. Utilising the old analogue technique of screenprinting, visual elements of The Comeback Special tour have been combined to create these vivid new designs. Each of these four new posters are hand-numbered, embossed with the THE THE logo and signed by Matt Johnson.

The Royal Albert Hall concert was the first of a trio of London shows during The Comeback Special tour—the others taking place at Brixton Academy and The Troxy—all of which sold out within minutes of going on sale.

Performing live for the first time in 16 years with a headline appearance at Denmark’s Heartland Festival a few days before the Royal Albert Hall concert, the rejuvenated THE THE, which featured previous members James Eller on bass, DC Collard on keyboards and Earl Harvin on drums and new member Barrie Cadogan on guitar alongside Matt Johnson, would go on to play sold-out shows and make festival headline appearances across the globe throughout 2018.

“Part comeback, part requiem, all extraordinary”
– James Hall, The Telegraph (UK)

“Johnson’s great achievement is to have made a body of work that is completely original, yet flows smoothly into the slipstream of accessible, socially conscious alternative rock.”

– Will Hodgkinson, The Times (UK)

“Johnson retains a gravel-voiced gravitas, and his band are taut and kinetic on barbed missiles such as ‘Armageddon Days (are here again)’… THE THE really shouldn’t leave it 16 years until their next tour.”

– Ian Gittins, The Guardian (UK)

“THE THE sound very much like a band revitalized… Johnson may not have sung publicly for years, but there’s little doubt he’s been practising his scales in private.”

– Jeremy Allen, The Independent (UK)
