As BRIAN SETZER gears up to hit the road this spring, the iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, and three-time Grammy Award-winner talked about the five essential songs that served as his inspiration.

Here are BRIAN SETZER’s essential five songs that he listens to before shows.

Elvis Presley, “Mystery Train”

“The song that first got me is ‘Mystery Train’ by Elvis Presley. And when I heard that guitar, a hand came out of the jukebox and said ‘you’re going to play this music!’”

Sammy Masters, “Pink Cadillac”

“I dare anybody to even try and find this song. It’s by a guy named Sammy Masters. This is some of the finest guitar playing I’ve ever heard in any genre. The guitar player’s name was Jimmy Bryant.”

Bobby Helms, “Tennessee Rock ‘N’ Roll”

“Give me some of that ‘Tennessee Rock ‘N’ Roll.’ How good is this song? And check out the guitar on this one, and the vocal.”

The Clash, “I Fought The Law”

“So in 1979, to be honest with you, music had gotten a bit stale for me. And when this band came out, and I heard this song, I thought ‘Wow! This is what I want.’”

“There’s a guitar player named Merle Travis. And he was a little bit before Chet Atkins and he invented this style of guitar playing. So for me, this is definitive in my style of playing.”

BRIAN SETZER today (August 4) has released “Black Leather Jacket,” another new track from his forthcoming THE DEVIL ALWAYS COLLECTS album out September 15 via Surfdog Records digitally, on CD and vinyl. The single follows “Girl On The Billboard,” which Guitar World (7/28/23) praised as “pure roadside bar sleaze in the best way—with strutting Chuck Berry-by-way-of-the-gutter riffs, and even a Route 66 namecheck. You’ll want to put the pedal to the metal with this coming through your speakers.”

The iconic 3-time Grammy award-winner discusses his self-written “Black Leather Jacket,” saying, “‘Black Leather Jacket’ is the story of my black leather jacket I bought when I was 18. It followed the guy through his whole life. He wore a black leather jacket when he met his girl and then got into a crash. Til the very end he had a black leather jacket. I like the idea of it. Black leather jackets are very personal things. They’re something you keep. You don’t get rid of those. So one of the first ones I bought was probably down at St. Mark’s Place [in NYC]…But I still have one from England from the 80’s. Surprisingly it’s a little small,” he adds jokingly. “It must have shrunk. But I still take it out for a ride.”

BRIAN SETZER is marking today’s release (August 27) of GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE, his first solo album in 7 years, by sharing the album’s third single + video, “Rockabilly Banjo.” The song, written by the iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner with Stephen “Dibbs” Preston (The Rockats), is a spirited countrified rockabilly song that shines a light on SETZER’s banjo playing, with Paul Franklin on pedal steel guitar. “Me and Dibbs were hanging around, and it was one of the few times ever that someone gives me a song that’s just the music and not the lyrics,” says SETZER. “And Dibbs said, ‘hey you play banjo, I love the way you play it.’ You know, banjo makes everybody smile and everybody’s after me to play more banjo. And Dibbs said, ‘hey, I got a song, what do you think of this?’ and I thought ‘Wow! Let’s clean it up.’ So that’s the last track. The legendary Paul Franklin is on steel. It was just a fun and good way out of the mess called 2020!”

“Rockabilly Banjo” follows the album’s first two singles/videos: “Checkered Flag,” co-written with SETZER’s bandmate in The Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom, and “Smash Up On Highway One” a collaboration with SETZER’s frequent writing partner Mike Himelstein.

Produced by Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell and Cheap Trick), GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE contains 11 all-original songs, all written or co-written by SETZER, and was recorded in Minneapolis (Setzer’s adopted hometown) and Nashville. “Obviously, it’s a reference to my motorcycles and hot rods, something that hasn’t changed since I was 15 years old,” says SETZER about the album title GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE. “I still have the same passion for going fast and adrenaline. But it’s also about my hearing problem with tinnitus–the ringing of the ear. It was pretty bad, and I realized that I couldn’t play the way I wanted to. As I recovered, standing in front of a small amplifier just didn’t cut it. The sound from my big amp makes the guitar rumble. Which is a big part of my sound. I was really despondent for a while because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do that again. So, ‘Gotta Have The Rumble’ refers to both of those things.”

BRIAN SETZER today (July 23) has shared “Smash Up On Highway One,” the second single from GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE, his first solo album in 7 years. The album will be out August 27 on Surfdog Records physically (CD) and digitally, with the vinyl due this fall (TBA). The iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner, who last month announced the all-original 11-track album with the single and animated video for “Checkered Flag,” co-wrote the blazing “Smash Up On Highway One,” with frequent writing partner Mike Himelstein. “I usually start out with a guitar riff,” says SETZER about writing “Smash Up On Highway One.” “I was playing ‘Misirlou’ by Dick Dale with the Stray Cats, and I thought, ‘wow I’d love to write something as cool as that riff.’ So I came up with something out of left field. I don’t know what you would call it–Middle Eastern or Eastern-European. Some college professor probably has a name for that scale. I had that riff laying around. I guess you could say I’m always collecting cool guitar parts. Mike Himelstein sent me those lyrics and they just fit right in. I think it’s really cool–it’s a way to move the whole rockabilly genre forward. The surf drum part in there with the guy playing the tom-toms similar to ‘Wipeout.’ I love it.”

Produced by Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell and Cheap Trick), GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE contains songs, all written or co-written by Setzer, and was recorded in Minneapolis (Setzer’s adopted hometown) and Nashville. GOTTA HAVE THE RUMBLE is a red-hot album from start to finish–American music amped up to 10–with songs that are full of dynamism and bravado.
