Seminal rock band +LIVE+ has joined forces with the Southern California-based brewing company Alosta Brewing for the creation of the band’s first craft beer Throwing Copper Ale.” It’s named in honor of the band’s landmark 8X multi-platinum album THROWING COPPER which is being celebrated via a 25th anniversary deluxe multi-format reissue out July 19 via Radioactive/MCA/UmeThe band–Ed Kowalczyk (vocals, guitar), Chad Taylor (guitar, backing vocals), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass) and Chad Gracey (drums, percussion)–is also marking the album’s milestone on a co-headline tour with Bush this summer of arenas and amphitheatres (dates below).

“Throwing Copper Ale,” according to the Alosta Brewing website, is “a union of the caramel toffee like sweetness of English barley and the bitterness of Nobel hops. Smooth, refreshing.  English Ales are often referred to as Copper Ales, and we could not resist taking the opportunity to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Throwing Copper with LIVE’s very first craft beer. We present to you Throwing Copper Ale.”

The ““Throwing Copper Ale” pre-sale begins today, July 16, with orders shipped, across the United States except for UT, ND, and SD, as well as Canada, on 10/1/19-10/7/19:

“Considering LIVE’s amazing and blessed career of over 25 years and its countless highlights, it can be pretty challenging to find things that we have yet to accomplish or try anew,” says frontman Ed Kowalczyk. “So when Alosta Brewing Co. approached us with the idea of ‘Throwing Copper Ale,’ we jumped at the chance to do something we hadn’t done before. Marrying a classic ale and a classic album like Throwing Copper was a no-brainer! So Cheers and Bottoms Up baby!”

ABOUT +LIVE+:
+LIVE+, the multi-platinum band from Pennsylvania–Ed Kowalczyk (vocals, guitar), Chad Taylor (guitar, backing vocals), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass) and Chad Gracey (drums, percussion)–have sold over 22 million albums worldwide and earned two number one albums (Throwing Copper, Secret Samadhi). Their catalog is filled with such gems as “Lightning Crashes,” “I Alone,” “All Over You,” and “Lakini’s Juice,” which live on today as classics at rock radio. Throwing Copper-which is being celebrated in 2019 with a new deluxe 25th anniversary edition via Radioactive/Geffen/Ume–produced the band’s biggest single, “Lightning Crashes,” which was #1 at Modern Rock radio for 10 consecutive weeks. Throwing Copper reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually surpassed sales of 10 million albums sold with Rolling Stone honoring the album with placement on their list, “1994: The 40 Best Records From Mainstream Alternative’s Greatest Year.” Secret Samadhi (1997) immediately shot to #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually went double platinum. The release of the platinum-selling The Distance to Here (1999) turned +LIVE+ into an international powerhouse and moved the band from arenas into stadiums. +LIVE+ has been and remains today a global concert juggernaut. The band released an acclaimed five-song EP in 2018, LOCAL 717, their first new music in over a decade.

SCREAMFEST’s FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER – 35TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING + CAST Q&A

As they prepare to embark on the next leg of their headlining “Silver Scream” U.S. tour tonight (7/12) in Peoria, IL, metalcore outfit ICE NINE KILLS debut the live video and audio recording from their sold-out show at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA earlier this year for their IT-inspired track, “IT Is The End.” The performance features a special guest appearance from members of the legendary ska band Reel Big Fish and was premiered yesterday via AltPress.

IT Is The End” is one of the featured singles from the band’s most recent release, THE SILVER SCREAM, out now via Fearless Records, and includes members of Less Than Jake on the studio recording. The album has surpassed 70,000 copies sold and recently saw the band break into the Top 10 of Billboard’s Rock Radiocharts for the first time ever with the hit single, “A Grave Mistake.” Watch the live video below:

Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve been completely immersed in the punk ska scene. Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake have always been two of my favorites of the genre,” shares vocalist SPENCER CHARNAS. “To have Buddy and JR from Less Than Jake perform the horns on the album, and then to get Matt and Johnny from Reel Big Fish to join us on stage live were two truly special experiences. This is one of my favorite tracks we’ve ever recorded because IT takes two genres that are almost diametrically opposed, metal and ska, and puts them together in a really unexpected way. It also pays tribute to the fact that Ice Nine Kills was originally a ska band, and although we are a heavier band today, I still wear that influence on my bloody sleeves.”

Furthering their passion for the horror genre and its influence on the tracks on THE SILVER SCREAM, ICE NINE KILLS will team up once again with Screamfest Film Festival to show the music video for their Friday the 13th-inspired track “Thank God It’s Friday” as well as perform an acoustic rendition of the song during their 35th anniversary screening of “Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter.” The event will take place at Ahrya Fine Arts by Laemmle in Beverly Hills on Saturday, July 27 at 7:30 P.M. Tickets are on-sale now at https://screamfestla.com/2019/event/friday-13th-final-chapter

ICE NINE KILLS had previously performed an acoustic version of their radio single “A Grave Mistake” at Screamfest‘s recent sold-out 25th anniversary screening of The Crow with special guest Ash Costello (New Years Day).

Pop-Punk Alt Rockers PUSHING VERONICA Share “Dead Girl” Music Video & Single + Q&A

DT: JULY 13

FM: KELLY WALSH, SRO PR

PUSHING VERONICA
ARISE WITH NEW MUSIC VIDEO SINGLE,
“DEAD GIRL”
DIRECTED BY DEAN KARR

POP-PUNK ALT ROCK QUARTET SHARE Q&A WITH DETAILS ON WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING IN A BAND WHILE ATTENDING HIGH SCHOOL & MORE

Not even close to legal drinking age, Southern California schoolboys  PUSHING VERONICA are a pack of proud ‘nerdy misfit kids’ that deliver a striking view into the pressures faced upon today’s youth with their self-described brand of “Ballpit Rock.” Mixing pop-punk melodies with crunchy rock riffs, the quartet have sprung to life the debut single and music video from their upcoming LP due in 2020 with the tongue-in-cheek track, “Dead Girl.”

Dead Girl” is accompanied with a macabre and hilarious music video shot by the legendary Dean Karr (Marilyn Manson, Deftones) and likens the high school hookup culture to necrophilia. “I’ve been a fan of Pushing Veronica for a couple years now and have loved seeing them mature into a full-blown rock band with hit making promise!” lauded Karr. “We had a blast making ‘Dead Girl,’ and my prosthetics department led by Ralis Khan did such an amazing job with our actress’ makeup! Writing the short story was fun and couldn’t have come out more on point than exactly what we filmed! Proud of these guys!”

Explaining the storyline, vocalist and guitarist JULIEN SILVÅS shared: “It’s like nobody wants to be burdened with a relationship or any form of love. Everybody just wants to chew people up and spit them out like emotionless zombies. It’s bullsh*t.Vocalist and guitarist OLI LITNER adds: We couldn’t help but stab that idea right in the heart. That’s why the girl isdead. She represents what happens when we simply use others for their bodies and stop valuing real relationships and connections with each other.”

PUSHING VERONICA - DEAD GIRL (Official Music Video)
PUSHING VERONICA – “DEAD GIRL”

PUSHING VERONICA is Oli Litner (vocals, guitar), Julien Silvås (vocals, guitar), Noah Rozansky (bass) and Brady Ward (drums). The band were formed after Oli met Brady in P.E. class. Neither wanted to participate, so they stood on the sidelines talking about punk rock music. Brady then introduced Oli to his “buddy since preschool” Julien, and the trio ended up performing at Brady’s bar mitzvah in 2016. Brady enlisted his friend Noah to fill out the rhythm section on bass and, with all the pieces in place, PUSHING VERONICA came to life.

When they’re not in class, the quartet can be found performing all around the Los Angeles area and
they’ve previously opened for acts including Unwritten Law, The Ataris, and Fuel. The band performed a sold-out gig with Gemini Syndrome at the Whisky A Go-Go which led to a production partnership with drummer and producer Brian Steele Medina, who invited the band to his Las Vegas studio to record their forthcoming album.

A Q&A with PUSHING VERONICA

(PUSHING VERONICA L-R:Noah, Julien, Brady, Oli; Photo credit: Dean Karr)

What it is it like being in high school and in a band? Do your peers enjoy your music?

Oli Litner: “This band is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. I’m a part of Generation Z, also known as generation anxiety, and high school is literally a teenage wasteland. I’m so ridiculously lucky that I play in Pushing Veronica, because whenever I notice something that drives me insane, I can channel my energy into a song rather than collapse in on myself like a lot of other high schoolers and some of my closest friends. Aside from all that sad sh*t, it’s the most fun I could ever imagine and my greatest passion! Every day working for the band is the best day of my life. We really do appeal to kids like us because of the social commentary in these songs, and a lot of our peers feel accepted and relate to our music! It’s an incredible feeling, because slowly we’re creating a community that takes a stand against all the absurd ideals of our world.”

Julien Silvås: “I feel different than everyone I go to school with, but being in this band makes me feel welcomed and proud to be who I am. I feel like it gives me purpose and priorities, because it fills up the void that forces a lot of my peers to turn to unhealthy behavior and substances.”

Brady Ward: “I really enjoy what we do, and it’s a really fun escape from the boredom of high school.”

Noah Rozansky: “Being in both high school and a band, there’s a great deal of added stress to keep up with high school drama, hormones, and schoolwork in addition to creating and practicing with the band. The band definitely helps me through it and my mental health struggles and provides me with an outlet for my untapped creativity. Many peers at our school are much more mainstream, listening to rap and pop artists such as Travis Scott or Ariana Grande, so our music isn’t as appealing to them. But there are certainly people who value the same things we do, and they connect to our outrageous but relatable songs. We love our niche group of fans with all our hearts!”

Is it hard to balance your time between schoolwork and band duties (writing, recording, playing shows, etc)?

Oli Litner: “It’s definitely a massive workload especially because I torture myself with AP courses, but we end up making time for everything. Having a purpose makes juggling studying for a final exam, editing a short film and being energetic enough to play a show possible in the same night. Music becomes an escape from the work we’d already have to do if we didn’t have this incredible band, so any added work is completely worth it and welcomed.”

Julien Silvås: “Not really a huge problem for me, I try to keep my school work load to a minimum so that I can primarily focus on the band and on the music but there are certain times when it can be difficult to organize both priorities and keep them from colliding with each other’s schedules.”

Brady Ward: “I have had trouble balancing the two because I took AP science courses and honors math, so I sometimes have large loads of work to finish in only a few days, and often had my weekends consumed with band activities.”

Noah Rozansky: “It’s an insane amount of work, keeping high GPAs as well as constantly bettering ourselves, but Pushing Veronica provides an unparalleled escape from reality that in turn improves my work ethic.”

How did you come up with your band name?

Band: “Veronica is the archetype of your modern high school girl who is pushed, prodded and pulled in every direction, by social media, shitty friends, and her own insecurities, making it almost impossible to find her true self. Society gives us two choices; To find the strength to push back and live life with purpose or collapse in on ourselves and support the same demons that are eating us alive. In Pushing Veronica, our purpose is to push our commentary and our characters like Veronica and Chad to the absolute limit to highlight the absurdity of the world around us, so we never lose sight of the truth.”

Your new music video single “Dead Girl” was recorded with the well-known photographer/videographer Dean Karr. What was it like working with him?

Oli Litner: “Working with Dean Karr was a blast! It made our heads spin. He’s incredibly gifted and the ideas he had for this video were those of a visionary. Our management reached out to Dean, he loved the song and sent us back a treatment where every member of the band was sharing the dead girl behind each other’s backs. We laughed our a**es off at all his shoot ideas and were stoked by the props, like the Willie Nelson gravestone and a giant stained-glass religious window. It was inspiring to work with someone so legendary and so driven. Dean is the ultimate pro, and such a genuine, sweet person.”

Julien Silvås *speaking in Scottish accent*: “I’ve known Dean Karr since I was a wee lad. I was introduced to him by my mother who had been his friend through her work. Working with him was truly an amazing and enlightening experience because of the attention to detail and work ethic he possesses. It really shines through in everything he creates.”

Noah Rozansky: “It was so insane we were going to work with Dean Karr! Being introduced felt surreal and working with him was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had and I’m so happy we got to work with someone so talented.”

What was your favorite part about filming the video? Did anything funny happen on set?

Oli Litner: “We shot the video at Dean’s house in the Hollywood Hills and there are probably 5 staircases up to his front porch. It rained that day and we had to carry a wall of guitar amps and all our gear up these stairs while it was pouring. The rain stopped soon as we got everything in the house. It was a perfectly absurd introduction to filming this weird-a** video.”

Julien Silvås: “The rain was the universe pissing on our plans to make the best music video ever, but we broke through the clouds and conquered. I loved seeing my bandmates die horribly. I also really loved the dinner scene where I’m killed by a giant baguette, because it was so perfect for me and I laughed my a** off watching it.”

Brady Ward: “My favorite part was when we were shooting the cover photo where we’re all dead, because Oli was torturing himself, tearing up for no reason. He was trying not to blink for like 10 minutes because he thought the camera could see his eyes, when he was just staring at the floor.”

Noah Rozansky: “My favorite part of filming was the bathtub scene. The scene was the first thing we filmed on the second day, so I started my day with a nice warm bubble bath. The funniest behind the scenes moment was probably all the wardrobe options. We went through dozens of outfits, including clear pants!”

What is the story behind “Dead Girl”?

Band: “The song is an insane ballad about romancing a dead girl, featuring the most outrageous lyrics we could think of. We draw parallels to our thoughts and the way we see our peers treating one another in school. In high school, we’ve noticed the trend is that nobody wants to be burdened with a relationship. It seems like people these days just want to hook up and move on with their lives with no strings attached. We think it’s important for people to be in real relationships, and not just use each other for their bodies. This song shows the darkest implications of those actions. If you’re gonna blindly hook up, the person you’re with could just as well be dead. We couldn’t help but stab that idea in the heart.”

If you could tour with any band, who would it be and why?

Oli Litner: “I would absolutely want to tour with PUP. They’re one of the hardest working bands in the world right now, and a constant inspiration. Stefan’s hilariously dark lyrics remind me of the way I see the world. I also think because PUP welcomes everyone and encourages individuality as well as using comedy and fun in their music, their fans are incredible and reflect that. It’s what we try to encourage and promote in Pushing Veronica and our Ballpit Rockers.”

Julien Silvås: “I also love PUP because they’re extremely talented musicians and amazing songwriters. Over the past couple of years, I’ve become a huge fan of the art that they create because of the close connection that their music has with my life. I feel like I can really relate, and I would really love to share my adventure with them.”

Brady Ward: “I would tour with the Voidz so I could hear ‘Business Dog every night.”

Noah Rozansky: “I would love touring with Friday Pilots Club and half·alive. While they aren’t the same genre as us, their songs are all amazing and they seem like such fun groups of people. FPC’s behind-the-scenes videos show an infectious quirkiness that I want to experience, and their shows look extremely energetic. half·alive has such amazing musicianship and their lyrics are super powerful, and I’d absolutely love to play with guys so talented every night.”

You’re off school for the summer, what do you have planned?

Oli Litner: “We’re gonna work baby! We’re going to finish our debut album and practice every day to be the best band we can possibly be! In our spare time, we’ve got a lit Dungeons and Dragons campaign and we finna (sic) throw down.”

Julien Silvås: “Work! Work! Work! On our debut album so that we can get on the charts and take over the world.”

Brady Ward: “I’m gonna sleep and rehearse with the dudes.”

Noah Rozansky: “Our summer is being spent recording and rehearsing tirelessly to become perfect musicians for whatever the future holds for us! My spare time is being used to keep the rest of the band from murdering everyone in D&D.”

If you overheard one fan talking to another after leaving a show of yours, what would you like to hear them say about the gig?
Band: “We would love our audience to feel as insanely happy as we do. We urge our fans to let their freak flags fly and be themselves, so we’d love if our fans could turn to each other and say they really felt comfortable in their own skin, and they felt alive in the ballpit. If they felt welcomed in our community and they were dancing their asses off, then our work is done.”

“Why don’t u ever call me anymore? Why don’t u ever call me?” beggingly asks lead vocalist, keyboardist and songwriter KENNETH WAYNE FROST of the Austin-based neo-psychedelic rock quartet THE CUCKOOS on their new single and video “Why Don’t U Ever Call Me Anymore.” The video was premiered yesterday via Stereo Embers, which described the song as “…a catchy blast of streetwise soul, libidinous groove and funky swagger. With a sonic attack that brings to mind everyone from Prince to the Black Angels, it’s no wonder that The Cuckoos were named by Classic Rock Magazine as the #1 Psych band to watch out for.” The song is now available for streaming and/or download across all digital platforms.

“I’m super stoked about ‘Why Don’t U Ever Call Me Anymore’ because I feel like it shows a different side of the band,” says FROST. “We’ve been trying a lot of different things and I’m very excited to start showing that. This one really showcases the band jamming out together too. It’s like a really heavy swampy rock dance track with a little bit of a funky touch. Lyrically I like it a lot because it gets stuck in my head and I feel like people can probably interpret it in many ways.”

Watch the music video, produced and directed by FROST in Austin, here:

“Personally, it’s me trying to convey a very sincere desperate feeling that I think we all feel at some point or another when someone’s not returning our phone calls,” explains FROST. “We live in the age of swiping right and ghosting and that’s tough sometimes. I wrote it at a time where I was going through some heartache and was being totally emotional,” he elaborates, “but there’s a self-awareness and kind of tongue-in-cheek-ness to it as well. It’s very over the top and dramatic, but I feel like it was also very inspired by hearing stories of girls practically being stalked from dudes not getting the memo when they get ghosted, and that’s not cool. So, it’s kind of poking at that a little. Guys–take a hint when they leave you on ‘read.'”

Along with the previously released singleWe Can Take A Trip To Another Day,” both tracks will be included on THE CUCKOOS’ upcoming full-length debut album due out later this year. The band’s self-titled debut EP was released in 2017, which Relix lauded as “a captivating blend of genres, evoking the 1960s through a contemporary lens.”

THE CUCKOOS recorded the album in Austin, TX hometown studio, The Bubble, with
Grammy-nominated producer Chris “Frenchie” Smith (The Toadies,…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, The Dandy Warhols, Scorpion Child). Mastering was completed by Grammy award-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen (Game of Thrones, Chris Cornell, Eagles of Death Metal).

Lauded as “The #1 Psych Rock band to see live” by Classic Rock magazine, THE CUCKOOS will take their impressive show on tour later this year with The Matt Gilmour Band (which features the son of Pink Floyd‘s David Gilmour) in addition to a few hometown shows throughout this month. From left: Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell

As AMERICA continue their 50th anniversary world tour, the iconic multi-platinum-selling group were profiled this past weekend on the critically acclaimed CBS “Sunday Morning” TV show (July 7). View it here.

The group’s lead singers, songwriters and guitarists Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, spoke to correspondent John Blackstone about their legacy at an array of locations including, fittingly, in a car on the Ventura Freeway to talk about their classic hit “Ventura Highway.”

The crew also captured the band at their June 21 headline show at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles where a full house of fans experienced a show filled with hits and deep album cuts. Music journalist Bob Lefsetz praised the band in a June 24 review of the concert [read it here]: “…when you see the band live you see why they continue. Because it’s fun, because it’s an adventure, because of the connection with the audience, because of the music…And as I sat there as the music washed over me and resonated, in my own private reverie, I said to myself THIS IS IT! And I wanted more.”

AMERICA are currently performing shows in Italy, before they return to North America later this month for additional shows on the tour (full itinerary below).

This year, the group’s anniversary is being commemorated with two special releases. On July 12, Rhino will issue 50th ANNIVERSARY: THE COLLECTION, available as a 3CD, 2LP, a single CD and digitally. This compilation encompasses songs from all seven albums that America recorded in the Seventies with Warner Bros. Records. The set also includes “You Can Do Magic,” a Top 10 hit from the album View From The Ground released by Capitol Records in 1982.

Capitol/UMe recently issued (on May 24) America: Classic Album Collection– The Capitol Years–a 6CD box set and digital collection presenting the GRAMMY®-winning band’s 1979-1985 Capitol Records albums together for the first time. All six albums have been newly remastered by Andy Pearce for the collection, which also includes four bonus mono single edits.

Almost 50 years ago, the Grammy Award-winning band was formed by Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek (who departed the band in 1977 and passed away in 2011) after meeting as sons of U.S. Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they began performing live. They released their debut album on Capitol in 1971, which hit #1 in the U.S and featured the #1 Billboard pop hit “Horse With No Name.” The Wall Street Journal (7/17/18) recently interviewed Dewey and Gerry about the evolution of the classic song for Marc Meyers’ recurring “Anatomy of a Song” feature.

AMERICA has influenced generations of musicians with their distinctive brand of acoustic-driven, harmony-rich rock, mixed with pop smarts, in soul-searching classic songs that reflected the times they were living in.

The band’s huge radio success throughout the ’70s and early ’80s at times overshadowed the lyrical depth of their songs such as the questing “Horse With No Name” (with its environmental message at the end); the frank romantic politics of “Sister Golden Hair”; the war paranoia of “Sandman” (written in part from conversations with returning airmen from Vietnam); and the cautionary life advice of Don’t Cross The River.”

As further testament to the band’s staying power and influence, AMERICA‘s recordings have been licensed for a multitude of placements in films (including American Hustle, The Nice Guys, The Last Unicorn and Girl Most Likely), television shows (among them The Sopranos, Friends, Breaking Bad and Saturday Night Live) and video games (including Grand Theft Auto). See their Soundtrack credits on IMDB here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2085638/

THE CULT Announce ‘Sonic Temple’ 30th Anniversary Reissues

DATE: JULY 2, 2019

FM: MITCH SCHNEIDER/MARCEE RONDAN

THE CULT ANNOUNCE
‘SONIC TEMPLE’
30TH ANNIVERSARY
REISSUES + “A SONIC TEMPLE” UK LIVE DATES

2019 marks the 30th anniversary of THE CULT‘s seminal album SONIC TEMPLE. To celebrate the anniversary, Beggars Arkive will release THE CULT: SONIC TEMPLE 30 on September 13. It will be released as a deluxe box set and a 5-CD set, plus the label will reissue a Sonic Temple on Double LP, which has been out of print for over 20 years. The sets both contain limited-release demos in addition to previously unreleased tracks. (Full details and track-listings are below.) Preorders are available here.

The band is also happy to announce more A Sonic Temple tour dates. After a run of hugely successful and completely sold-out U.S. West Coast tour dates, they will play 10 shows in the UK in October (dates below).

Originally released in 1989, Sonic Temple proved to be a pivotal moment for both the band and the wider rock scene. Produced by the legendary Bob Rock, Sonic Temple had four chart-topping singles: “Fire Woman,” “Edie (Ciao Baby),’ “Sun King” and “Sweet Soul Sister.”

In a recent interview about the album, Ian Astbury explained how the band brought together hard rock and indie rock to create the unique, game-changing sounds on Sonic Temple. We wanted to retain our core DNA as we went deeper into psych and hard rock influences. It was a complete immersion for me into art, film, music, poetry and literature, weaving those influences into what was to become Sonic Temple. The band was becoming more popular. We were in uncharted waters. Most of the bands we had come up with had split up or fallen off. We were accelerating. There was no real time to breathe. We were forming new allegiances and breaking the glass ceiling of ‘the indie outsider.'”

The album catapulted THE CULT into superstar status and remains their most commercially successful release. It has sold over 1.5 million copies in the U.S. alone and was certified platinum in 1990. It made it to #10 on the Billboard charts, and the aforementioned songs all remain rock-radio staples to this day.

The set list for the “A Sonic Temple” tour draws from THE CULT‘s 10 studio albums with the centerpiece being a super set that’s focused on the core songs from Sonic Temple; some of these songs have not been performed since the album was originally released. Each show will be a gathering and celebration for CULT fans–an opportunity to come together for one night–an event that will be memorable for all who attend. As Billy Duffy stated about the tour in a recent interview, “I’d like fans to not only allow themselves a little indulgence into maybe simpler happier times of the late 80s for a few hours at a ST19 show, but also be happy that the music is now really their possession, not ours, and to do with it what they will.”

The BOX SET contains three pieces of vinyl and a cassette plus tour memorabilia and ephemera (replica of original laminate, backstage pass, original press releases, label copy and more). It’s numbered and limited to 3000 pieces worldwide and contains 40 tracks, four of which were previously unreleased. LP1+2 contain the album as originally released. LP3 contains “Live At Wembley” recorded by the BBC, and the included cassette contains limited-release demos. Four of the live tracks are also previously unreleased.

The FIVE-CD SET contains 53 tracks (including 6 previously unreleased) with the original album on disc 1, alternate edits, mixes, extended versions and acoustic versions on disc 2, limited-release demos on discs 3 and 4 and “Live at Wembley” recorded by the BBC on disc 5. Six of the live tracks are previously unreleased. It is beautifully packaged in book form with rare photographs and interviews with the band by esteemed UK journalist James Brown.

The DOUBLE LP is a re-vamped reissue of the original album. Now cut onto two pieces of black vinyl, the audio is improved and contains 16 tracks total, which comprise the original album plus six B-sides. It’s been out of print for over 20 years.

The DIGITAL version will replicate the CD-set but excludes the original album for a total of 43 tracks.

About The STRAY CATS:
The STRAY CATS, the band that put Rockabilly music back on the record charts in the early ’80s, scored several big hits on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to a striking visual 1950’s style brought “up to date” with exaggerated pompadours and colorful tattoos and as well as genuine musical chops that evoked the best players of rockabilly’s original heyday. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Brian Setzer, upright bass player Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom in the Long Island town of Massapequa, NY, in 1979, the trio shared a love for Rockabilly music. After banging around New York for a few months, in the summer of 1980, and seeing a pompadoured kid on the cover of UK magazine NME, they hopped a plane to London where a rockabilly revival movement was just beginning to emerge. Their massive hits and videos include “Runaway Boys,” “Rock This Town,” “Stray Cat Strut,” “(She’s) Sexy + 17,” and “I Won’t Stand in Your Way.”

Q&A WITH DAVE NAVARRO AND BILLY MORRISON
ABOUT “ABOVE GROUND”

Last year’s inaugural Above Ground event was both a success musically and as a fundraiser for MusicCares, raising awareness and funds for the treatment of mental health. From your perspective, can you talk about how your goals were achieved that night?

BILLY: I think Dave and I really did manage to get people talking about mental health and raised some valid discussion with people during the press we did for that show.

DAVE: I believe our goals were achieved beyond what we had hoped. In addition to raising awareness about mental health issues, we raised a substantial amount of money that went directly to those who need it most. Personally, many people have approached me since to thank me for our efforts to help end the stigma of mental health issues. I have spoken openly about my own and I think it comforts some to know they are not alone. Put it this way, we are working toward ending a need for our own event in a way!

This year’s event continues your celebration of vinyl albums as an art form. How did The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and the self-titled debut album by the Stooges shape you musically?

BILLY: Oh, the Ziggy album was everything to me. A sexually ambiguous alien in a woman dress singing about space? What is there NOT to like about that?? Mick Ronson formed my whole playing–listening to his Les Paul when I was a kid was almost a spiritual experience. And the Stooges just personified raw power and emotion–the things that spoke to me the most when punk was happening.

DAVE: Both of these iconic albums helped shape the sound of Jane’s Addiction and were instrumental in terms of influences. As a young man I had been drawn to theatrical performances, Kiss and Elton John among them. When I got to Ziggy, it was as if I had found the perfect blend of theater, story and depth with a musical originality. As for Iggy, let’s just say that our punk rock roots were firmly in place when this album came out, pushing the boundaries of aggression and art and poetry, something that I see in Perry Farrell as well. It’s no wonder Iggy is one of his all-time favorites as well.

Why do you think both these albums continue to resonate with music audiences today? Why are they so pivotal?

BILLY: Great music is timeless. Especially important albums like these two. Kids growing up now respond to Iggy’s brutal power and Bowie’s sexual identities and soaring musical landscapes more than ever.

DAVE: I think they resonate because they are authentic. Authenticity lasts, lingers and influences. Both albums are crafted bodies of work. Track listing made a difference, what song started what side made a difference. These full-length albums to me are like fine art. Painstakingly created to stand the test of time. And they do!

Each of these albums is important on its own, but pairing them together, in one night, makes quite a statement. What inspired you to present both albums in one night?

BILLY: The Iggy and Ziggy thing has always worked. Even when they both did shows together back in the late 70’s/early eighties, the pairing of Iggy Pop and David Bowie worked. Bowie produced Iggy and they had this ongoing musical relationship that just seemed perfect and iconic to us.

DAVE: I think it’s no surprise that both Billy and I are heavily influenced by the Sacred Triangle of Rock and Roll: Bowie, Reed, Pop. Last year we did Velvet Underground as one of our choices, so it seems only fair that we complete the triangle!

As with last year’s event, the evening will be marked by an array of special guests TBA making appearances. Can you reflect about some of the special highlights from last year’s performance?

BILLY: Having Billy Idol perform The Velvet Underground’s “Heroin” is something that sent shivers down my spine. He nailed it and it was a totally unexpected moment. Also, having Marco Pirroni fly over from the UK to perform Adam And The Ants songs with us for the first time in many years was a definite highlight for both Dave and I.

One of my favorite moments was Macy Gray doing “Sunday Morning” by Velvet Underground. I recall being nervous about that one as Nico’s voice was so iconic… Who could pull it off? Luckily Macy joined us. Now, at rehearsals, Macy tends to just listen, learn, take in and get through so she knows what’s she’s doing. But we don’t know her process! SO…she had gotten through it a few times at rehearsal with us and we all felt it sounded decent. However, when Macy gets on stage, she completely changes and blossoms into the amazing singer and talent we have come to know and love. When she started singing live, I literally had shivers as she made it so special and her own. I was blown away.

Finally, and importantly, mental health is more than ever the big issue of the day, with devastating suicide rates on the rise. Can you talk about the important role that the music world can play as a consciousness-raiser?

BILLY: We all work in a business that gives us a platform. And it’s our duty to utilize that platform for good whenever we can. So the music world has so much influence and real power that so many people don’t use – Dave and I are just trying to use whatever platform we have to help make a small change and I encourage everyone to do the same. Together we can make a difference.

DAVE: I think one of the reasons music is such a great tool is that it can get at a feeling inside us that is uniquely our own, yet we can share it. Much like those who suffer from mental health issues, they are all uniquely personal but can be shared for a much broader conversation. I am proud to stand as a survivor of trauma and depression and drug addiction. I feel that anyone who chooses to keep pushing forward through the tough time and asks for help should be proud they have done so. We are warriors who choose to not let this disease kill us, yet we have trauma all throughout the body physically, which can be harnessed into addiction and self-destructive behavior. I am here to say, stand up and be proud that you choose life, no matter what it takes to stay in the game…you are NOT alone. Here are a handful of musicians who understand YOU and want to help YOU because WE GET IT. We understand you and consider you part of our family on the road to recovery.

About HEART:
When Ann and Nancy Wilson formed HEART, the idea of two women leading a rock band was still groundbreaking. From the moment 1976‘s Dreamboat Annie was released, they became stars. With hits like “Magic Man,” “Crazy On You,” “Barracuda,” “Alone,” “What About Love,” and “These Dreams,” the band became one of the biggest hit-makers in the seventies and eighties selling more than 35 million records. In 2012, their memoir Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock & Roll became a New York Times bestseller, and in 2013 the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

About JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS:
Joan Jett is an originator, an innovator, and a visionary. As the leader of the hard- rocking Blackhearts, with whom she has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she’s had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” Her independent record label, Blackheart Records, was founded in 1980 after she was rejected by no less than 23 labels. Blackheart is one of the longest running indie labels and continues to give voice to new bands. Jett has acted in movies and television, including 1987’s Light Of Day, and in a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, The Rocky Horror Show. She has appeared on such acclaimed television shows as Oprah (the last season) and Law and Order.

As a producer, she has overseen albums by Bikini Kill, Circus Lupus, as well as the Germs’ LA punk masterpiece, GI.

Her music has become a permanent force in mainstream culture. A version of “I Hate Myself for Loving You” was reworked for NBC’s Sunday Night Football theme song, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night”, and was performed for 9 seasons by the likes of Pink, Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood. Her music is heard in countless films and TV shows including Easy – A, Kick Ass, The Runaways, Shrek, Baby Mama, and many more.

Since co-founding the Runaways, the pioneering all-girl punk quintet, at age 15, Jett’s determination and drive have kept her in the public eye. Jett was able to see her story told in The Runaways, the film based on (lead singer of The Runaways) Cherie Currie’s book Neon Angel starring Kristen Stewart as Jett, and her fellow A-lister Dakota Fanning as Currie. Jett was close to the project: She served as an executive producer. Jett and the Blackhearts released their latest record, ‘Unvarnished,’ in 2013 and continue touring the globe to throngs of adoring fans.

Joan Jett has spent her lifetime breaking barriers and challenging expectations – this is, after all, a woman who is both a spokesperson for PETA and a devoted supporter of the US Military. She’s fought hard for all of her historic accomplishments, yet she remains humble and appreciative.

“I’ve had a blessed career,” she says. “I consider myself so lucky to have been able to do things my own way.”
