STEPHEN McCARTHY (Long Ryders, Jayhawks, Dream Syndicate) and CARLA OLSON (Textones, solo artist, producer) have today (September 21) unveiled the video for the title cut of their first-ever duet album, NIGHT COMES FALLING, out November 11. It was premiered yesterday (September 20) by Rock and Roll Globe stating “A true Americana power duo has risen from the wildflowers of Los Angeles in Long Ryders lead guitarist Stephen McCarthy and the acclaimed singer / songwriter / producer Carla Olson. And Rock & Roll Globe is beyond honored to have the opportunity to premiere the video for the album’s title cut.”

The two singers, songwriters and guitarists have lengthy careers that have intersected a few times, and NIGHT COMES FALLING brings them together again in exciting ways on this 11-song album of stirring and rocking Americana music (the track listing is below). It will be released via CARLA’s production company Have Harmony, Will Travel, with distribution and marketing by Bob Frank Entertainment via the Orchard. “Night Comes Falling” is a moving song that emerged after a conversation STEPHEN had with CARLA who was having dreams about her former singing partner, Gene Clark of the Byrds. It was on 1987’s classic So Rebellious A Lover, CARLA’s album with Gene, that STEPHEN and CARLA first recorded together when he contributed lap steel to “The Drifter” and dobro on “Deportee.” Below are quotes from both artists about the song, which will officially be released September 23, and video, directed by Tim Roth and including footage from two performances in CA: at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica and the Alex Theatre in Glendale.

NIGHT COMES FALLING comes on the heels of McCARTHY and OLSON’s two songs on the 2022 BMG multi-artist album Americana Railroad where they offered a new version of STEPHEN’s “Here Comes That Train Again” as well as Gene Clark’s “I Remember The Railroad.” (CARLA produced seven additional tracks on the album including those by Dave Alvin, Rocky Burnette, Robert Rex Waller Jr. and John York.) NIGHT COMES FALLING is a testament to their individual and combined talents and was recorded at Robbie Krieger’s studio, Horse Latitudes, in Glendale, CA, It was produced by CARLA, STEPHEN and Mikal Reid.

The album’s musician credits are Stephen McCarthy (guitars, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, mellotron), Carla Olson (guitars), Paul Marshall (bass) and drummers Mitch Marine and Benjamin Lecourt. The album’s other players are Skip Edwards (keyboards, plus the string arrangement for “Long Way Back To Seventeen”), Jeff Lewis (flugelhorn on “Broken Lullaby”) and Jesse Owens Wells (fiddle on “I Remember The Railroad”).

STEPHEN: “The idea for the song ‘Night Comes Falling’ came about at a band rehearsal in LA when I met up with Carla to sing a duet for a benefit. I asked her if she ever thought of her old singing partner Gene Clark. She mentioned that she’d seen him in a few dreams but that he never spoke a word. I returned to the East Coast and wrote the song based on that experience & Carla added lyrics as well. The contemplative thoughts of friends who’ve made a profound impact in our lives doesn’t come in the clear light of day but instead when shadows start to fall. The song is also meaningful because it was the initial inspiration for this collaborative album.”

CARLA: “In the 1980’s I performed live with Gene Clark and we recorded an album, So Rebellious A Lover. After he passed away in 1991, I found it difficult to listen to his songs without tears. He has appeared in my dreams for these past 30 years untouched by time and silent. Smiling but never speaking. When Stephen and I were rehearsing for a benefit concert in 2018,’ I told him about these dreams. ‘Night Comes Falling,’ both the song and the album, are the result of this conversation.”

STEPHEN: “I’ve known and respected Carla for a long time and was honored to record with her and Gene Clark on So Rebellious A Lover. Carla’s husband Saul Davis has always been very supportive, and it was he and my wife Liz who planted the idea of a duet album after we sang together at a benefit concert a few years ago.”

CARLA: Stephen and I have always appreciated each other’s talents and after we recorded the two songs that appeared on Americana Railroad, we said, ‘Let’s do more. Let’s record an album.’ We agreed that we should give writing together a try. The results of that idea can be heard on the five co-written songs that appear on the album. We also thought it would be fun to include a few covers. “One That Got Away’ has long been my favorite Desert Rose Band tune as is ‘Don’t Talk To Strangers’ by the Beau Brummels. I also wrote a few songs with the late George Green in the 80s including one that Percy Sledge recorded, ‘The Grand Blvd.’ I still have a few sets of words he’d given me, and his family gave Stephen and I permission to write music to one, ‘The Bell Hotel Is Burning.’ It’s an emotional and evocative lyric that will hopefully move the listener as it did Stephen and I.”

YouTuber & musician RHETT JAMES MCLAUGHLIN–one-half of the comedy duo Rhett & Link from their popular daily show “Good Mythical Morning”—will release his debut solo country album HUMAN OVERBOARD this Friday, September 23, To celebrate its release, RHETT has shared a new folk-driven single “Give A Damn” along with a whimsical music video animated by Micah Buzan (The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Red Hot Chili Peppers). “‘Give a Damn’ charts a bit of new sonic territory as compared to the first two singles, adding a folk rock vibe to the country mix,” says RHETT. “Thematically, it’s a confession of my evangelistic tendencies—my need to persuade—and how I don’t particularly like that aspect of my personality. In a sense, it captures the conflict I have in releasing this music in the first place. I’m just trying to tell my story without the expectation that anyone should or would care, and that can be a hard thing for me, especially when I drink my own Kool-aid and believe I’ve got something important to say.”

RHETT continues to share his inspiration for the “Give A Damn” music video stating: “For the music video, I knew I wanted to illustrate just how deep personal convictions–religious and otherwise–can be, to the point of making you feel like you’re part of an army of special, chosen ones on a mission. Micah Buzan, an incredible animator known for the official music Video for ‘Little Fishes’ from The Claypool Lennon Delirium, as well as City of Venom from Mashed–along with help from Brittany Penn–brought my vision to life with his trademark style.”

Born in Macon, GA and raised in North Carolina, RHETT grew up surrounded by the sounds of his father’s musical heroes such as Merle Haggard, George Jones, Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley whose classic melodies inspired him to begin writing his own music. On his debut album, HUMAN OVERBOARD, due September 23, RHETT captures his reverence for the foundations of country music while paying ode to his youth. With impassioned and deeply personal lyrics, HUMAN OVERBOARD details RHETT’s journey away from Christianity.

JAMES AND THE SHAME revealed the first taste of HUMAN OVERBOARD with the track “Believe Me” on July 18 which delved into RHETT’s spiritual deconstruction and the reaction he received after making the announcement publicly. For Folk’s Sake (8/7) wrote about the song stating, “McLaughlin’s pleading croon rings in the likes of Alan Jackson and Darrell Scott, but instrumentally veers into territory reserved by Lord Huron and Okkervil River. It’s an eclectic mix of vintage country and folk-rock.” Its lyric video, seen HERE has since garnered over 709k views. The second single, “Where We’re Going,” which features guest vocals from his wife, Jessie McLaughlin, was premiered via PopMatters on August 17 who described the track as a hearty, romantic performance reminiscent of Americana this side of Drew & Ellie Holcomb” while stating “elements brought into production like melodic pedal steel and steady percussion set the song into a contemporary country-like soundscape.” Watch the music video for “Where We’re Going” HERE.

RHETT was seen over the past weekend at Beachlife Festival in Redondo Beach, CA making a surprise guest appearance alongside Shooter Jennings, Lukas Nelson & Orville Peck as part of their tribute set for the late country icon Waylon Jennings. He shares his experience, stating: “I was floored when Shooter asked me to be a part of the tribute. Finding out that he was a fan of my music was a surreal moment, and it became even more surreal when I found myself on stage singing one of my favorite Waylon Jennings songs, ‘Waymore’s Blues,’ for a huge crowd. I’ll never forget it.”

BETTER NOISE FILMS released their revenge-driven horror thriller THE RETALIATORS yesterday, September 14, in over 1,000 cinemas across the globe. The film was praised as a “blunt, bloody and brutally bombastic slice of genre cinema” (Backseat Mafia) and stars Michael Lombardi (FX’s ‘Rescue Me,’ ‘The Deuce’) and Marc Menchaca (‘Ozark,’ ‘Black Mirror’), alongside featured appearances from a who’s-who of modern active rock chart-leading musicians including TOMMY LEE (MÖTLEY CRÜE), IVAN MOODY and ZOLTAN BATHORY (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH) and JACOBY SHADDIX (PAPA ROACH).

“This reminds me of a return to form, where you would meld aggressive rock and metal soundtrack with an edgy picture,” says ICE NINE KILLS frontman Spencer Charnas who appears in THE RETALIATORS as “Max.” He elaborates on his edgy experience filming stating: “It’s the only time I’ve ever had a gun in my mouth, which was pretty exciting. It was also the perfect first time to meet Five Finger Death Punch. What better way to get to know someone than have them stick a gun in your face?”

PAPA ROACH vocalist JACOBY SHADDIX shared how their single “The Ending” made it on the soundtrack: “‘The Ending’ is one of those songs that when we first wrote it we knew it was special, there is something about those dark 80’s synths that lend themselves so well to horror. When we got the call that ‘The Retaliators’ wanted to use it in the soundtrack, we said yes as it absolutely fits, then we made a new ‘Retaliators’-themed music video for ‘The Ending’. When great music is tied to film it adds this extra layer of excitement for me, like ‘Lost Boys’ and ‘The Crow.’”

VELVET CHAINS will release their third single, “Can’t Win,” across digital platforms this Friday, September 16. Taken from the Las Vegas-based hard rock group’s second full-length album due out next year, the track possesses a musically dark feel and moody introspective lyrics. The band–consisting of founder Nils Goldschmidt (bass), Brazilian brothers Laurent (lead guitar) and Larry (rhythm guitar) Cassiano, drummer Jason Hope and Chilean-bred lead singer Ro Viper— yesterday, September 14, revealed a first glimpse of the “Can’t Win” music video with a premiere highlighting their cultural diversity and international appeal via the Brazil-based media outlet Terra.

“Can’t Win” was recorded at Hideout Recording Studio in the band’s Vegas hometown with Grammy Award-nominated and Juno Award-winning producer Kane Churko (Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach, Skillet) and was co-written by founding member/bassist NILS GOLDSCHMIDT and multi-platinum songwriter Drew Lawrence. Its music video was shot at various locations across Vegas with director Brian Cox (Bring Me The Horizon, Hollywood Undead, The Used), who also lensed the video for VELVET CHAINS’ “Last Drop,” the first single from the upcoming album, which premiered via AntiMusic.

“We filmed the video all around Vegas, says NILS, “including a house with a cool bar, downtown Vegas, a random studio in North Vegas, the middle of the desert, etc. Director Brian Cox used a drone for the pool scene, which was interesting to shoot since our lead singer Ro had some trouble floating.” NILS adds: “The song’s lyrics are pretty ominous, but I think you’ll find an element of hope in there, too. ‘When guilt turns into sin, grief eats away my soul, when I know that I can’t win’ is a key line from the chorus of the song, based on the feeling of constantly failing. The video reflects these emotions with scenes showing defeat and despair. There’s also a tip of the hat in there to Soundgarden, a band we all love, with the line, ‘Like a black hole sun I shine.’”

VELVET CHAINS will celebrate the release of “Can’t Win” with an opening performance for Todd Kerns (Slash Feat. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, The Age of Electric) on its release date, September 16 at Count’s Vamp’d in Vegas. The band will play their new songs including their second single “Back On The Train,” released August 12. MXDWN premiered its Dean Karr (Ozzy Osbourne, Velvet Revolver)-directed music video as being “armed with thunderous riffs, melodious guitars…[and] booming vocals.” CHAINS have been seen performing on the summer’s rock festival circuit including appearances at Rock Fest (Cadott, WI) and Blue Ridge Rock Fest (Alton, VA) and have an ongoing Vegas residency at The Barbershop (The Cosmopolitan).
