COLT FORD
SHARES TRACK-BY-TRACK INTERVIEW
TAKING LISTENERS INSIDE THE SONGS ON HIS NEW ALBUM
‘WE THE PEOPLE, VOLUME 1’

We The People is classic Ford with twists from the soft and tender, to the rebellious and includes some unique duets that work perfectly, making this a creative masterpiece from beginning to end.”
–Michelle Kennedy, The Country Note, 9/28/19

Country star and multi-million-selling artist COLT FORD has shared a fun and revealing track-by-track interview (*see below*) that takes listeners inside the songs on his newly released seventh album WE THE PEOPLE, VOLUME 1 (released September 20 on Average Joes Entertainment).

The 14-song album includes the latest hit “Slow Ride,” the groove-driven song featuring guest vocals by number-one hitmaker, Mitchell Tenpenny, to create a seriously infectious blend that radio is embracing:

“First listen to ‘Slow Ride’ and KNEW immediately it was a hit! It’s Colt at his best with M10. How can you go wrong with these two?”  —Tom Hanrahan WDXB Birmingham, AL
“The feedback from our listeners [for ‘Slow Ride’] was so overwhelmingly positive…our listeners are totally on board…country music offers something for everyone.” — Lisa Johnson KHBZ Harrison, AR

The accompanying video for “Slow Ride” featuring Tenpenny was directed by Ed Pryor for Hideout Pictures and recently premiered on “YouTube Premieres” (here). It is also being broadcasted on CMT Music and can be seen at CMT.com.

Track By Track
‘We The People, Volume 1’
2019

“I’m Still Me”
Early on in my career, I wanted to plant my flag like, “I’m Colt Ford. This is who I am. I don’t have to tell you; my music tells you.” “I’m Still Me” is me replanting that flag. After all these years, a lot of things have changed, but at the end of the day, I’m still me.

“Slow Ride” feat. Mitchell Tenpenny
I wrote “Slow Ride” with Taylor Phillips, Josh Mirenda, Jared Sciullo and Justin David Bertoldie, who plays fiddle in my band. “Slow Ride is just the melodic jam that has you 30 seconds into the song and you just wanna let the music take you. Lyrically it’s just the guy saying “hey let’s forget all the trouble and you and I get lost in each other.”

 “We The People”
I don’t know if I’ve ever sounded as good as I do on “We The People” [laughs]. It’s just me. It’s not a political statement. I don’t care if you’re white, black, brown, purple, who you love, or whatever it is, come hang out, be a good human, and have some fun with other like minded people. We have one life; this is not a dress rehearsal, this is it. We can never survive happy and healthy if we don’t work together.

“Back To Them Back Roads” feat. Jimmie Allen
That was getting back to my roots like, “I don’t want y’all to forget how me and Brantley Gilbert took you down these dirt roads first. Let me show y’all where all of these back roads are. It still feels damn good to just crank it up loud, roll the windows down, and let the music do some good for your soul!” I love Jimmie Allen’s voice. He’s super talented and a great guy. I work with people I’m friends with. It’s not an industry setup. It’s organic. It’s more magical that way.

“Red, White, Blue, and Blessed” feat. Walker Montgomery
It is what it is. I don’t like artists who get into politics. If you’re going to get up there and get involved with all this political shit, I expect you to really get in there and get your hands in it-don’t go on Twitter and Instagram and just say a bunch of dumb shit. As far as what the song is about, I support the men and women who provide our freedom. If you’re here and you’re in this country with all our opportunities, we’re red, white, blue, and blessed. The truth of the matter is, I watch what celebrities say. They want their words to be taken like gospel truth, but the truth is they didn’t study it. It’s an opinion! Keep your opinions to yourself and let audiences enjoy what you do and your God-given gifts.  That’s it, man.

“Night Cap” feat. Michael Ray
I got that song from Tyler Hubbard who’s in Florida Georgia Line. Tyler was born and raised 25 minutes from where I’m from. I took Florida Georgia Line on the road before anybody else did. I believed in them. The success they’ve had is unbelievable. I sent him a message like, “Hey man, I need some songs.”As soon as he sent one, I knew I wanted it. He was like, “That’s ours!” [laughs] He sent me another one I loved, and he finally let me have it. It’s super cool, and it’s got crazy swagger and sexiness to it. It’s for the girls.

“Lucky Scars” feat. Eddie Montgomery
As a songwriter, you write something and you’re like, “How has nobody written that?” That’s, “Thank my lucky scars” for me. Those stories are real. The names in there are real. We take some shots. A lot of people have become crybabies about a bunch of shit that ain’t even important. I wasn’t raised like that. We didn’t tattletale. If somebody hurt your feelings, you’d be in the middle of the front yard fighting back. An hour later, you’d be playing hide and seek. Stop being a cry baby, get on with living your best life, and be a good person.

“Where The Water Is” feat. Dan Tyminski
This is one of my favorite songs on the record. I got it from Walker Hayes, one of my good buddies. It just feels so good–great vibe about it. I was finished with it and then asked Dan Tyminski to jump on here and what he did with his background vocals and on the underneath chorus was amazing. Then he grabbed the mandolin…and WOW.
“Bring That ‘W’ Home”
If you know anything about small towns, it’s a small-town anthem or theme song. Friday night football is a big deal in a small town. It’s life. It means everything to some of these people. Where my dad grew up, he didn’t have anything. He was a good athlete, so Friday night was as important as winning the lottery. It really resonates with me and how I was raised.

“Cooter Brown” feat. Larry Fleet
My whole life, it’s a saying that I’ve heard, “Like, boy did you see Jim last night? He was drunker than Cooter Brown!” It’s a really good country tune that’ll be fun to play live.

“Bass Like That” feat. Dan Tyminski
That song isn’t saying much; it’s just a fun one. There’s some funny sexual innuendos in there. It ain’t offensive. It’s country as heck though. I love the way I sound on it. With “Bass Like That,” I want to be able to reach some people who didn’t think they’d like country music, that’s as cool as winning a GRAMMY®.

“Time Machine”
I’ll be 50 this year, and I’ve been so blessed and done so many cool things in my life. I’ve met some of the coolest people in the world. In terms of that song, as you get a little older, you start realizing how smart your parents were or a teacher or a coach and you start thinking back to those times. I’ve got a lot of life to live though. Looking back, people can relate to that song wherever you’re from of looking in that windshield and bringing back memories. It’s just a nostalgic, good, right-down-the-middle country song.

“How You Lose A Woman”
That song was written 15 years ago. I’m a guy who loves songs; I love great songs. I don’t care if I wrote them. I thought that song was a number 1 hit from the moment I heard it. I’ve pitched it to multiple artists and said, “You’re crazy if you don’t cut this!” Fast forward all these years later and being more comfortable with who I am, I decided to cut it myself. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever done. Every man in the world should listen to it. I’m giving you a playbook on how to win. Every woman can relate straight up.

“We The People” (Remix) feat. DJ KO
You put that on at any club, you ain’t getting off the dance floor!

COLT FORD Q&A
September 2019

You gave up your role as a pro golfer for music.  What pulled the trigger for you to make that change?

COLT FORD: Music has always been my first love and although I did some other stuff, including playing golf for a living and being a golf teacher, I could never make music go away in my head and heart. I was born to do this.

Your new album ‘We The People, Volume 1’ (September 20, 2019, via Average Joes Entertainment) is a strong collection of songs, guest artists, grooves and lyrics.  What is the thread that ties it all together so seamlessly?

FORD: I like my records to take you on a journey of sound and time and space and evoke emotions of all sorts. I think this is the best job I have done yet.

Where were you when you performed your first concert on the big stage that kinda took your breath away?

FORD: Well the first really big show was on a July 4th in Georgia years ago. They were expecting 300-400 people but about 3,000-4,000 showed up. We got done about 8:30pm and there were fireworks for about 30 minutes, I was still signing autographs until after midnight. It was just crazy.

What artists did you listen to growing up in Athens, GA that influenced the music you write and perform today?

FORD: I’ve always been all across the board with music. I know, I’m strange, but it’s the truth. To say a particular artist wouldn’t be fair to so many.

What is your survival kit for the road-the two or three must-have items?

FORD: Well, I would say my golf clubs, some olives and pickles and my Crystal Light Blue Raspberry stuff I put in my water. (Laughs)

You still play a lot of golf, right?  How many times a year would you say you play and who are some of your golf “besties”?

FORD: I still play as much as I can, but I would say I probably play 30 times a year–it’s in sections really. I will start to play well, then go a month and don’t make a swing–it’s frustrating at times. I have a lot of guys I enjoy playing with; Jake Owen, George Birge from Waterloo Revival, Charles Kelley, my manager TK, and I love playing with my buddy Toby Keith, and a lot of PGA tour players who I’m friends with.

You recently spent your July 4th, not with family, and not with close friends.  Instead you traveled across the globe to perform for our troops.  What does that do to your head? And what does that do to your heart?

FORD: Well, I’m not a political guy. I don’t like when artists or celebrities run their mouth like it’s the gospel truth–when it’s just your opinion. What I do believe is that we truly owe the men and women who fight and sacrifice everything for our freedom. Getting to be on a base on the other side of the world and play for those amazing men and women is the most special thing I have ever done. It’s food for my soul.

If you had a magic wand and you could waive it one time only, what would you wish for?

FORD: As corny as this sounds, I would wish that everyone could just be more tolerant of stuff you don’t like and find common ground with each other. I’m sure that sounds dumb to most but it’s honest.

Being such a multi-dimensional personality, what’s next for Colt Ford – your own TV Talk show, a comedic actor in a film (you have a great sense of humor by the way), or maybe might you try your hand at bull-riding or some other extreme activity?

FORD: Well I don’t need any extreme activities anymore, but I would love to do a talk show and movies and acting is a passion. So can someone make that happen (laughs)?

Nashville, TN (August 29, ’19)–Country star and million-selling artist COLT FORD has announced September 20 as the release date for his much-anticipated seventh album, WE THE PEOPLE VOLUME 1 (Average Joes Entertainment). The 14-song album includes the latest hit. “Slow Ride,” the groove-driven song featuring guest vocals by number-one hitmaker, Mitchell Tenpenny, to create a seriously infectious blend. Pre-order the album here. The accompanying video for “Slow Ride” featuring Tenpenny was directed by Ed Pryor for Hideout Pictures and premiered on “YouTube Premieres here.

Hailed by
Billboard (in its premiere of the lyric video) as a song that “instantly captivates,” “Slow Ride” is available to radio via Play MPE. It is quickly being embraced by radio and streaming platforms, with multiple playlist placements. According to Tom Hanrahan at WDXB in Birmingham, Alabama, the #1 sales market for the song in the first week: “First listen to “Slow Ride” and KNEW immediately it was a hit! It’s Colt at his best with M10. How can you go wrong with these two?”

Recently filmed in Nashville, Tennessee, the “Slow Ride” video includes performances by both Ford and Tenpenny as they recount the romantic journey of a couple in love.

For WE THE PEOPLE VOLUME 1, FORD once again tossed the rule book out the window, perfecting his dynamic and definitive distillation of country, hip-hop, and rock like never before.

“Making this one, I went back to the beginning when I really didn’t know any better,” FORD explains about the new album. “I didn’t let anybody tell me the rules or say, ‘You can’t do this; you’ve got to do that.’ Instead, I let the feeling of the songs guide me. The record reignited my passion for playing and making music. My music transcends politics, religion, and rules. That’s what this whole project is about.”

This passion is brilliantly captured on the album, produced by Noah Gordon and COLT FORD, with Shannon Houchins serving as Executive Producer. In between a marathon tour schedule of nearly 150 shows in less than 12 months, they recorded at FORD‘s studio in Nashville. Throughout the process, the star pushed himself like never before, maintaining the hallmarks of his signature style, charting new territory, and hitting his most prolific stride to date with the two-part project all at once.

WE THE PEOPLE VOLUME 1 is a soundtrack for positivity and living life to the fullest for these times. Of course, FORD preserves the right amount of grit and wit to liven and light up any party as his blend of southern rock, modern country, and rap remains downright unbeatable. Alongside guests such as Jimmie Allen (“Back To Them Backroads”), Mitchell Tenpenny (“Slow Ride”), Michael Ray (“Nightcap”), and more, his lead vocals and raps remain as robust and uniformly strong as ever, uniting the disc in a seamless flow. Nevertheless, “How You Lose A Woman” marks an emotional high watermark for WE THE PEOPLE VOLUME 1. This vulnerable, vibrant, and vital ballad illuminates FORD‘s impressive range as he carries a heart-wrenching hook to the heavens and back.

FORD and his band are currently touring the country this summer, with a special appearance set for September 17 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville alongside Dillon Carmichael, Mark Wills, The Mavericks and more. The entire line up will be announced the week of the show. Tickets are on sale now here.

INTERACT WITH THE MEDIA AT A
FUN-AND-LOOSE PRESS CONFERENCE IN HIS VIDEO FOR
“WE THE PEOPLE”

Leading up to Independence Day, COLT FORD has released the video for his new single “We The People,” in which he interacts with the news media at a fun-and-loose press conference about the song and his new music.

At the beginning of the video, the influential and million-selling country artist says that the party-minded “We The People” song–now quickly gaining momentum at country radio–is about bringing Americans of all nationalities together to enjoy one another, embrace the music and have a good time. COLT delivers the message wearing an “Air Force One” jacket, flanked by a bodyguard at the podium. The media gathered in the press room is suspicious at first of his intentions, but they come over to his side as the anthemic song kicks in. Watch the video for “We The People”–which just world premiered at CMT and was directed by Ed Pryor for Hideout Pictures–here: http://averagejoesent.co/WeThePeople_Video

“The bottom line is I have a platform, as do all artists and entertainers, and we have a choice about what to do with it,” says COLT about the inspiration for the song and the video. “I don’t wanna be negative. I wanna be positive. I don’t wanna push my ideas of politics or my agenda. I wanna use my platform to unite people and show everyone we are not that different.”  To accompany the premiere of the video,  COLT has written an essay for CMT about what unites, not divides, Americans. It is now posted at the link above. As he writes, “We have so many things we can agree on, like how cancer sucks. We want clean air and water for the entire world. I promise that people from every background, upbringing, race and religion all want good things for our kids and for our families.”

“We The People” is the first single from COLT‘s upcoming album–his seventh–to be released in the coming months on Average Joes Entertainment, the Nashville label he co-founded and co-owns. At the press conference in the “We The People” video, the singer, songwriter, rapper, musician and performer says there are probably two albums on the way. Without revealing any details, COLT explains: “I do feel like I’ve grown and gotten better as an artist with every record, and this is no exception. The fans want the music and they want a lot and they want it fast so I’m gonna give it to them. The fans are who make it all possible.”
