Looking Back On The Wang Chung Video Controversy

I was very happy to see former PR clients Wang Chung—Jack Hues and Nick Feldman—in fine form last night at Resorts World in Las Vegas on the “Things Can Only Get Better” ‘80s tour headlined by Howard Jones.

Back in the day, I milked the controversy surrounding the video for their 1986-1987 smash  “Everybody Have Fun “Tonight” for all it was worth. It all started when the BBC refused to air the video in the band’s native UK “after a medical adviser to its screening committee warned that the rapid flashing and strobe-like editing could trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.”

Quickly taking advantage of this, I wrote a press release and landed key coverage on Good Morning America and in the Los Angeles Times.  Responding to the BBC’s claim that the video contained “too many frames per second,” Nick Feldman told the newspaper: “It’s absolutely ludicrous. I mean, they told Mozart his music had too many notes, and look what it did for his career.”

THE COPA ROOM
INSIDE TUSCANY SUITES & CASINO IN LAS VEGAS
KEEPS IT SERIOUSLY ROCKING
WITH EXCITING SHOWS THROUGHOUT AUGUST

Fresh off its official one-year anniversary celebration in July of regularly booking rock shows on weekends, the COPA ROOM inside Tuscany Suites & Casino in Las Vegas has announced a red-hot lineup of shows throughout August (see the schedule below).

The fun starts Saturday, August 1 with Delilah’s Dead (Grateful Dead Tribute) in celebration of Jerry Garcia’s birthday and wraps Sunday, August 30 with the monthly “RnR Church” high-octane show and brunch buffet. Other notable shows include a pairing of two original Vegas rock bands, Cyanide and The Bones, on August 22 and Electric Ramble—original rock and soul straight from New Orleans, complete with swampy guitar riffs, strong vocals, infectious rhythms, and modern rock energy—on August 28.

Also look for the return of The Moby Dicks—the powerhouse all-star tribute to Led Zeppelin—on August 29. The band unites some of rock’s most accomplished performers featuring Chas West (West Bound / The Jason Bonham Band), Brian Tichy (The Gene Simmons Band / Whitesnake), Phil Soussan (Last In Line / Ozzy Osbourne), Christian Brady (HELLYEAH / Franky Perez), and Gregg Fox (Renaissance Rock Orchestra).

The COPA ROOM is proudly keeping the rock ‘n’ roll fire burning in Las Vegas. “The Copa Room rocks it, relentlessly,” John Katsilometes of the Las Vegas Review Journal has written (6/5/26) about the intimate venue with a big sound, which presents national and local rock shows, mostly on weekends, catering to a diverse array of musical tastes. A full-service bar is available with well drinks priced at $10-12 and beers between $5-7. There are also $5 well vodka and tequila drinks available at the venue which always offers complimentary self and valet parking.

The best religious experience in Las Vegas just might be “Rock ‘N’ Roll Church.” This freeform classic rock jam with top musicians, surprise guests, and unpredictable sets—also known as “RnR Church”—takes place the last Sunday afternoon of every month between 3PM-5PM at the Copa Room inside Tuscany Suites & Casino.

On July 26, powerhouse vocalist Andrew Freeman and guitarist extraordinaire Christian Brady, alongside the deft rhythm section of bassist Barry Barnes and drummer Shon McKee, will pray to the gods of rock ‘n’ roll as only they can. The $5 cover is waived with the purchase of the $20 brunch buffet which starts at 2:30pm—and just like any church in town, there’s free parking. Hallelujah!

“I’ve spent my career playing on stages all over the world, but some of my favorite moments have always happened backstage when musicians are simply jamming for the love of it. Rock ‘N’ Roll Church was created to bring that same spirit to the audience,” says Andrew Freeman, founder of Rock ‘N’ Roll Church. “For those of us who grew up on classic rock, this music isn’t just entertainment…it’s something we believe in. It’s a community, an experience, and for many of us, it’s almost a religion. That’s what Rock ‘N’ Roll Church celebrates. Pair that with Tuscany’s incredible brunch, and you’ve got an afternoon that feeds your appetite before the music feeds your soul.”

About THE STRAY CATS:

THE STRAY CATS, the band that put Rockabilly music back on the record charts in the early ’80s, scored several big hits on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to a striking visual 1950’s style brought “up to date” with exaggerated pompadours and colorful tattoos and as well as genuine musical chops that evoked the best players of rockabilly’s original heyday. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Brian Setzer, upright bass player Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom in the Long Island town of Massapequa, NY, in 1979, the trio shared a love for Rockabilly music. After banging around New York for a few months, in the summer of 1980, and seeing a pompadoured kid on the cover of UK magazine NME, they hopped a plane to London where a rockabilly revival movement was just beginning to emerge. Their massive hits and videos include “Runaway Boys,” “Rock This Town,” “Stray Cat Strut” “(She’s) Sexy + 17,” and “I Won’t Stand in Your Way.”

THE CALLING have today (July 10) returned with “Dust,” the powerful first single and video from their upcoming album, BEFORE THE WORLD TURNS TO DUST. Marking the band’s third album and first since 2004, the 15-track record will be released this fall (exact date TBA) digitally and on vinyl and CD via TLG | Virgin Music Group. Listen to “Dust” HERE and watch the compelling video HERE.

The Los Angeles group is led by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Alex Band alongside members Daniel Damico (lead guitar, keyboards, backing vocals) and Dom Liberati (bass). They’ve returned to build on their signature rock sound that’s filled with big ascending melodies, emotionally absorbing lyrics, and Band’s moving vocals. These are the same elements that powered THE CALLING’s 2001 single “Wherever You Will Go,” notably the second-longest running #1 hit (23 weeks) on Billboard’s Adult Top 40 chart.

“I was initially writing ‘Dust’ as a timeless love song set in an apocalyptic world—kind of like what ours feels like at the moment—but then the song got a bit deeper,” says Band about the song which captivates with its lines “Before the world turns to dust/ Love will find us.” “At the time,” he adds, “I was learning a lot about quantum physics and astrophysics and that brought in a different meaning. We’re all basically born from cosmic dust and connected by the same energy that flows through us. If you look close enough, everything in the universe is even made of the same core elements. Maybe love amplifies that subatomic connection? Maybe love can even transcend space and time? All of this was running through my head while writing ‘Dust.’

The video for “Dust,” directed by Tom Flynn, is striking and memorable featuring Band and award-winning actress Katelynn E. Newberry who has over 100 film credits. The ethereal fairy tale-like video takes magical turns with a sprinkling of gold dust throughout the star-crossed lovers’ journey.

“Going off the idea that everything is made of the same energy and love never dies, the video tells a story of two people who haven’t been able to connect–-maybe one has passed, maybe both have passed, maybe they live in parallel universes,” explains Band. “Whatever way you want to imagine it for yourself, we would like to think that love is stronger than what keeps us apart. That in the right moment, we can find each other again. In terms of production, we are proud of the video we made with a small budget and little time. I think it conveys exactly what we wanted it to. The director did an exceptional job putting all the pieces together. My wife wrote the video treatment and we shot it at my family’s property in Cleveland during a surprise snowstorm.”

Noting their last album, Camino Palmero, was released 25 years ago, Band says: “I hope we fit into today’s musical landscape as we have in the past. We aren’t trying to chase any current trends or change our sound; we’re just hoping that our big anthemic sound resonates and that we can connect with people around the world. It’s truly our fans who have kept us alive, never giving up on us like we have never given up on ourselves and our belief that music does so much more than just entertain.

“We’ve been together in this iteration of the band for four years now, and our chemistry is amazing and keeps getting stronger—whether writing, recording or performing live together,” elaborates Band. “Daniel and I have been friends for over 20 years; he has been playing guitar off and on for me and for The Calling since the early 2000s, and we have very similar taste and writing styles based on our love of classic and 80s/90s rock. I knew I needed to add someone that would bring in something different and shake things up. Then Dom came along. Dom is an incredible bass player, having worked for me for a couple of shows. He’s also got his own thing going as a solo artist and he’s a bit younger in age and brings in a different pop sound. I knew Daniel and Dom would get along but I didn’t know they would end up becoming best friends. Playing live and touring is a collective joy for us and we’re always looking forward to the next show.”
