You were born here, it was a lean year, 1982
She was golden, unfolding, right in front of you
It’s been a long time, no sunshine when you’re on your own
A little blue-jay, in the mid-day calling you back home
–JEFF LARSON, “This Summer”

Veteran California singer-songwriter-guitarist JEFF LARSON paints a beautiful picture of eternal summer with “This Summer,” the second track and video from his melodically sparkling, CA-themed album ADOBE HOME out this Friday, April 26 on Nashville-based label Melody Place. Watch the serene and colorful video HERE and pre-order the album HERE.

The LARSON-written “This Summer” is a gorgeously produced upbeat summer song, with an irresistible melody and harmonies that honor the history of Southern California bands like the Beach Boys and America. In fact, Brian Eichelberger from the Beach Boys band, and America’s Gerry Beckley, join LARSON for the song’s shimmering harmonies. Plus, LARSON co-produced ADOBE HOME with Beckley who plays bass and organ on “This Summer.” And Brian Young—from another sunny-sounding band, Fountains of Wayne—is on drums.

“This Summer” was premiered by Rock And Roll Globe, which noted that “…this fantastic song no doubt alludes to the ebullience of a California that only comes from being a native of the land.” Read a Q&A below with LARSON about the song.

The 13-track ADOBE HOME is JEFF LARSON’s first solo full-length album in a decade. He solely wrote eight of the songs on ADOBE HOME, plus two with legendary songwriter Jack Tempchin (of the Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling” fame); one with Beckley, and one with Robert Lamm of Chicago (see the track listing below). It’s an album with subject matter that touches on people, places, and things with styles ranging from Americana, folk-rock, power pop, and some jazz elements. See the track listing below and read the album launch press release HERE. The album comes on the heels of IT’LL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN, his acclaimed 2023 six-song tribute EP to the late iconic singer and songwriter Tim Hardin.

The album’s first single and video was “Something of A Dream,” premiered by Wildfire Music, which noted: “Coming from an album that takes inspiration from California, it’s not surprising that the lyric video for ‘Something of a Dream’ does fit very well with the colors and moods of Adobe Home. While lyric videos vary widely, the animated quality of this one does add considerably to the poetic feeling and imagery of the track, taking us into golden hour colors, terra cotta interiors, and out onto the desert highway, too. It’s a definite bonus to the experience of the song to see this flowing and inviting video alongside it.”

Here are the production credits for “This Summer”:

(Words & Music: Jeff Larson)
Jeff Larson: Lead Vocal, Backing Vocals, Electric Guitar
Gerry Beckley: Vocal, Bass, Organ
Brian Eichelberger: Backing Vocals
Jim Hoke: Celeste, Kalimba
Steve Fekete: Electric Slide Guitar
Brian Young: Drums and Percussion

Here’s a Q&A with LARSON about “This Summer.”

“This Summer” is a perfect summer song, with an irresistible melody and harmonies that honor the history of Southern California bands like the Beach Boys and America. Can you tell us about how the song was born?

I wrote and recorded the song as a personal soundtrack to the Summer of 2022. From what I recall, I was walking on the coast and talking into my phone with lyric and melody ideas from overhearing people visiting, reunions, and embracing surf, sun, and all the usual clichés. I also pulled from my own childhood with memories of riding bikes and just playing until the sun went down.

In fact, Brian Eichelberger from the Beach Boys band, and Beckley, join you for the song’s harmonies. Plus, you co-produced the album with Beckley. And Brian Young—from another sunny-sounding band, Fountains of Wayne—is on drums. It’s really the perfect DNA for a “summer” song. How did this all come together?

Yes, in the past when I wrote a song like this I would turn to my friend Jeffrey Foskett (Beach Boys, Brian Wilson), but that was not an option due to his health. I sang all the harmonies initially but it needed another voice besides mine in the mix. I reached out to Gerry (Beckley)and he also suggested Brian Eichelberger. That was a good call and it worked out perfectly for this song.  Brian Young on drums was also essential in adding the energy it needed and taking it away from my initial throwback approach.

There is an undeniable wide-open optimism in the lyrics, and the song comes on like the perfect tonic for a troubled world. Can you describe your mindset when you were writing it?

I usually have some degree of melancholy in my lyrics (and voice), but for this song, it really was an exercise in trying to stay on message and relay a sense of fun and positivity.  It’s a little rare in that other songs I have written in this vein usually have troubled verses and then resolve is found in the chorus.  I initially didn’t take the song that seriously, but Gerry and some others liked it – so I followed through and it came alive. If it comes across as a good “feel” song, that’s great – mission accomplished.

What are your own thoughts about California—what has it always represented to you? Do you feel that is still the case?

Well, I am a native of the San Francisco Bay Area. This record (Adobe Home) is really just trying to focus on where I landed in the San Diego area and just making an audio statement around that. I would hate to say I am defined by a state or state of mind; I’m not, but I do love “the place” that is California.  It is far more varied than most people see.  There are plenty of issues, but that is true almost everywhere.  I do know what it is to commute i traffic.  I know the pace of technology intimately, having lived within it.  I have raised a family here.  All said, I am content with this place and still see it as inspiring.

ABOUT JEFF LARSON:

JEFF LARSON is a veteran singer-songwriter from the San Francisco Bay area. Musically, Jeff got his start under the wing of producer Elliot Mazer (Neil Young, The Band) playing in clubs and venues throughout the Bay area. As a native Californian, the influences are obviously present and reach from the golden era of L.A.’s Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter scene to the Bay area’s musical heritage and the tension between the two. While remaining a solo artist, he’s collaborated with Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, Chicago’s Robert Lamm, John Blakeley of The Sandals, and Eagles songwriter Jack Tempchin, among others. His prolific body of work created over the years has been released by various means and labels with licensing opportunities with JVC Victor Japan, Universal / Rhino, BMG and others from The Netherlands to Japan. “Larson’s earnest vocals and unwaveringly engaging folk-rock-country songs have an alluring feel,” wrote the San Jose Mercury News in 2011 about his album The World Over. “Larson’s warm, wonderful songs will grab you immediately and just get better with each subsequent listening. Every one of the 10 numbers here proves to be an individual gem.”

“Stand for something or ya die for nothin…”
–“(Hold On) To The Dream”

Singer, songwriter, author, Broadway star, and actor SEBASTIAN BACH has released a video for “(Hold On) To The Dream,” the latest single from his forthcoming album CHILD WITHIN tHE MAN out May 10 on Reigning Phoenix Music. Watch the “(Hold On) To The Dream” video HERE. SEBASTIAN penned the lyrics for “(Hold On) To The Dream” and he and producer Elvis Baskette wrote the melody; music is by Devin Bronson, Isaac Capenter and Baskette.

“If someone asked me to play the heaviest song I have ever recorded, in my 35 year career, I would play them ‘(Hold On) To The Dream,’” SEBASTIAN says. “This song is an homage to two of my favorite things: classic METAL of the ’70s and also YACHT ROCK as well! Hence the new term YACHT METAL! I have never heard a song quite like ‘(Hold On)To The Dream’ where the crushing verse combined with the luxurious chest-hair harmonies of the chorus. I have tried to incorporate every tone of my voice into this song. For those of you keeping score, I can tell you that my voice hits some of the highest notes of my career in ‘(Hold On) To The Dream!’ HOLD ON TO YOUR SEATS!!! CAUTION: this is a MONSTER JAM!”

CHILD WITHIN tHE MAN was recorded in Orlando, Florida; produced and mixed by Baskette; engineered by Jef Moll, assistant engineered by Josh Saldate and mastered by Robert Ludwig/Gateway Mastering. BACH wrote or co-wrote all the album’s 11 tracks and sang all lead and backing vocals. CHILD WITHIN tHE MAN features guest appearances from John 5, Steve Stevens, and Orianthi—who all co-wrote their respective tracks with BACH—and two tracks co-written with Myles Kennedy (“What Do I Got to Lose?” and “To Live Again’); Devin Bronson on guitars, Todd Kerns (bass) and Jeremy Coulson (drums) round out the players on the album. The album will be available on CD (Jewelcase), cassette and double LP in a variety of color options. Pre-save the album HERE. The album artwork holds special meaning since it was designed by BACH’s father, noted visual artist David Bierk. “This album artwork was started in 1978 and finished in 2024!” SEBASTIAN says.

About Tash Sultana:

Since they broke through into the Australian music scene more than a decade ago, Tash Sultana has been nothing less than a musical force.

The gender-fluid multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer and entrepreneur has carved out every step in their musical journey over the last 15 years, which has taken them from performing open night mics all over the country, busking the streets of Melbourne to releasing platinum records, accumulating billions of streams, nominations across the globe, to winning awards and selling hundreds of thousands of concert tickets worldwide.

Tash creates, composes, writes, engineers and produces everything that is heard live, and on record. Tash is the band. Their now-famous busking sessions on Melbourne’s Bourke Street catapulted them into the eyes and ears of music fans everywhere, and a viral video of their early song ‘Jungle’ brought them international attention. Since then, it’s been nothing but a meteoric rise.

Their debut album Flow State landed in 2018 and quickly became Gold certified, and spawned Platinum and Gold records with singles ‘Mystik’ and ‘Murder to the Mind’.

In 2019 alone, Tash sold more than 500,000 concert tickets globally, and over the years they’ve notched up major international appearances at festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Montreal Jazz Festival.

Acclaimed second record Terra Firma landed in 2021, and garnered widespread praise for Tash’s raw and reflective songwriting and ambitious musical arrangements. Like everything before it, the entirety of the record was carved by Tash – every instrument that was played, every bit of musical arrangement, every bit of production. But for the first time, Terra Firma saw Tash bring in a couple of close friends and collaborations to co-write – including Matt Corby, Dann Hume, Jerome Farah, and Josh Cashman.

Their extensive catalog has nearly broken the internet, having raked in billions of streams and counting.

#IMOMSOHARD began as a popular web-series by real-life best friends, comedians, and moms Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley. One night, over a glass of wine and many tears of frustration, these two friends decided to tell a different kind of story. With a camera, two husbands, a babysitter, and bottomless mimosas, Kristin and Jen decided to speak openly about their fears and failures and prove that the only way to survive motherhood is through laughter and friendship. Good thing because, while shooting the first video for the series, Jen forgot her newborn daughter’s name. The video was a smash hit, sparking an online community of 2 million of the most engaged followers that social media has ever seen, confirmation that moms and women everywhere needed to laugh and to be heard. Kristin and Jen followed up with weekly videos about all things woman and mother: hemorrhoids, nipple hair, sex after marriage, mom bods, spanks, wedding dresses, and swimsuits. (Yes, they wore them on camera). Both women write and produce the #IMSH series with a common goal: Maybe we can make you feel better about the job you’re doing if you see the terrible job we’re doing. The videos have received nearly 300 million views worldwide in just 5 years. The phenomenon that Kristin and Jen created has since been nabbed for development by Warner Brothers TV. The comedians have sold-out two national tours, written a New York Times Best Selling book, landed branded deals with Fortune 100 companies such as Wal-Mart and Uni-Lever, and taped a standup comedy special for Amazon Prime Video, launching the network’s first standup comedy platform. They have recently premiered their weekly podcast and a children’s book series with Harper Collins. Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley are both based in Los Angeles and can often be found selling pizza slices for the PTA or working as parking enforcement at school drop off.

BETTER NOISE MUSIC Reveal RECORD STORE DAY (4/20) Exclusive Releases From DIRTY HEADS and THE HU

DT: APRIL 19, 2024

FM: KELLY WALSH, MITCH SCHNEIDER / SRO PR

BETTER NOISE MUSIC
CELEBRATE
RECORD STORE DAY
(SATURDAY, APRIL 20)
WITH EXCLUSIVE RELEASES FROM
SOCAL ALTERNATIVE ROCK OUTFIT
DIRTY HEADS
AND
MONGOLIAN ROCK GROUP
THE HU

In coordination with Record Store Day on Saturday, April 20, BETTER NOISE MUSIC have announced two special offerings from label acts DIRTY HEADS and THE HU which will be available exclusively at all participating record stores (see locations HERE).

Southern California alternative rock outfit DIRTY HEADS will release a stunning 4-disc vinyl collector’s edition box set of their critically acclaimed 2022 album, MIDNIGHT CONTROL. The four discs’ artwork was created by Dave Foral and then assembled and rearranged by DIRTY HEADS percussionist Jon Olazabal who was assisted by John Wellman. They will contain all the tracks on the album’s digital deluxe version which was released in July 2023 which includes the 10 original tracks and 13 bonus tracks. The bonus tracks include acoustic versions of “Rescue Me,” (which spent an entire month at #1 on the Alternative radio charts), their take on Joe Walsh’s 1978 hit “Life’s Been Good,” which DIRTY HEADS performed on national TV on NBC’s “The Today Show and “Island Glow, three Lo-Fi versions of album tracks, and three previously unreleased songs. Each MIDNIGHT CONTROL COLLECTOR’S EDITION box set will be unique as it is ethically packaged using 100% certified recycled papers and recycled vinyl.

“The ‘Midnight Control’ album is so special to us, it represents several years of our careers and our lives,” says vocalist Jared Watson. “After releasing the original version of the album last summer, we found ourselves going back and playing with some of the tracks that weren’t included on the original. Those songs suddenly came to life and by the end of the year, we knew that we had to get them out to our fans. So that’s what we’ve been doing this year with ‘Rescue Me,’ ‘John Linen’ and the new version of ‘Island Glow’ with our friends Monsieur Periné. Now that we’re back on the road, it felt like the perfect time to get the rest of these songs out so our fans can dig into them this summer. We’re especially stoked about the Lo-Fi tracks, they’re so sick!”

Catch DIRTY HEADS on a co-headlining tour this summer with Slightly Stoopid. The band will also be seen headlining the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, CO on July 1 and will also make a stop at Beachlife Festival in Redondo Beach on May 3. Theatrical emo rock group THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT today (April 19) share the first new music following their 2023 EP SOUNDS FROM BEYOND THE ABYSS (VOL. 1) via Better Noise Music. “You’re So Ugly When You Cry” features guest vocals from Bert McCracken of seminal emo rock outfit The Used who boast 2X RIAA Platinum certified releases (2002’s self-titled debut The Used and 2004’s In Love and Death), a RIAA Gold certification for 2007’s Lies For The Liars, and over 1.1 billion overall career streams. The song contrasts upbeat anthemic pop-punk melodies with lyrics about hitting rock bottom. “It’s not about healing, or the come-up later on, it’s about telling people ‘it sucks right now, I don’t like who I am when I’m like this, and I know you’ve felt the same way,” according to THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT vocalist LEE JENNINGS.

Listen/download “You’re So Ugly When You Cry (feat. Bert McCracken of The Used)” now at https://thefuneralportrait.ffm.to/ysuwyc.

“Working with Bert was a lifelong dream come true for us,” exclaims JENNINGS. “We all grew up with The Used being one of our biggest influences and it was a surreal moment when he reached back out saying he loved the song and wanted to be involved.”

THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT have also shared a captivating music video for “You’re So Ugly When You Cry (feat. Bert McCracken of The Used)” which introduces the “Coffin Crew” (the band’s name for their devoted followers) and their movement. Watch the video to find out more and the reveal of a special powerful ally to their cause via YouTube HERE or streaming below.

Lauded as one of Alternative Press’ “100 Bands You Need to Know,” THE FUNERAL PORTRAITLEE JENNINGS (vocals), CODY WEISSINGER (guitar), CALEB FREIHAUT (guitar/auxiliary), ROBERT WESTON (bass), and HOMER UMBANHOWER (drums)—have relentlessly toured across the country built an unwavering fanbase opening for acts including Shinedown, Ice Nine Kills, Underoath, Skillet, From Ashes To New, Starset, Pvris and ISSUES. The band’s intention for their music is to represent ‘outcasts’ from all walks of life–the weird, the misunderstood, the marginalized—which they showcase through their live performances which include extravagant theatrics, stage décor, costumed actors, and more. THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT will hit the road this spring as direct support to darkwave/emo rock group DEAD ON A SUNDAY from April 24 to May 10. They’ll also appear later in the year on festivals including So What?! Texas Music Festival (6/1), Louder Than Life (9/28) and Aftershock (10/12). See full dates listed below. “You want to know what’s as fun as listening to Little Feat on Sam’s Place?” says Bill Payne of the acclaimed and iconic band LITTLE FEAT. “Watching the video of ‘Can’t Be Satisfied!’ You are brought into the studio with us. The smiles are real, the music kicks, and you can’t get much closer to the action than this!”

“Can’t Be Satisfied,” a rollicking cover of the classic Muddy Waters-written song, is the second offering from the jumping SAM’S PLACE (Hot Tomato Productions/MRI). Due out May 17, it marks their first new studio album in 12 years; first-ever blues album; and the first one to feature linchpin conga player Sam Clayton on lead vocals on every song. Listen to “Can’t Be Satisfied” HERE and watch the video HERE. It was filmed at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, TN and directed by Grant James and Jesse Lauter.

The members of LITTLE FEAT 2024 are: Bill Payne, Keyboards and Vocals; Sam Clayton, Percussion and Vocals; Fred Tackett, Guitars and Vocals, Kenny Gradney, Bass; Scott Sharrard, Guitars and Vocals; and Tony Leone, drums and vocals. Their individual musical chops and collective chemistry light up the nine-track SAM’S PLACE, which was waxed at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, TN (August 2023), except for “Got My Mojo Working (Live),” recorded live at the Boulder Theatre in Boulder, CO (December 17, 2022). This is the first LITTLE FEAT album recorded with new members Sharrard and Leone.

“This song was one we played back-to-back for many years with ‘Hot Tamales,’” says Bill Payne about “Can’t Be Satisfied.” “Tony Leone got hold of the rhythm track and gave it new life with a walking tempo. Yes, it’s a dark song with pistols in the face and the like, but there is a joy in the track, uplifting and impossible not to love.” The song features special guest Michael “The Bull” LoBue on harmonica.

“You can’t make a blues album without playing some Muddy Waters,” says Scott Sharrard, “and Little Feat has performed this on live shows over the years. What sets this rendition apart is Tony Leone’s nod to Levon Helm with the drum groove. This arrangement takes you from Mississippi, up to Chicago and lands down in Arkansas, where both Fred Tackett and Levon Helm were born.”

“Can’t Be Satisfied” follows the album’s first single/video “You’ll Be Mine,” a cover of the Willie Dixon-written chestnut popularized by Howlin’ Wolf. Watch the video HERE and stream the song HERE, and pre-order/pre-save the album HERE. See the full track listing below and view the band’s extensive “Can’t Be Satisfied Tour” dates and ticket links HERE.

SAM’S PLACE is a joyously blues-soaked party. The band’s longtime friend, the beloved Bonnie Raitt, provides vocals on the Muddy Waters gem “Long Distance Call,” a duet with Sam, and the album’s other special guests are Michael “Bull” LoBue on harmonica, Marc Franklin on trumpet, and Art Edmaiston on saxophone on select songs.

LITTLE FEAT emerged from the pandemic with their sense of humor, chops, and collective joy in playing intact—and their creativity has been renewed with SAM’S PLACE. The idea for the album started with Bill, but the whole band jumped in. They started working on songs at sound checks. Sam, Scott and Fred wrote a new song, “Milk Man.” Visiting backstage at a FEAT show, Bonnie Raitt suggested the Howlin’ Wolf tune “You Will Be Mine.” Scott suggested “Why People Like That,” a Bobby Charles tune. Sam chose the Willy Dixon-penned “Don’t Go No Further,” a deep Muddy track. And they included a live version of “Got My Mojo Working.”

Scott had recorded in Memphis, and they eventually found their way to the second Phillips (the first was Sun Studios, where Elvis began his career) studio there, complete with Jerry Lee Lewis’s piano, which Bill noted “practically played itself.” FEAT’s a rock band, but as Scott observed, at the end “the blues is home,” and they basically recorded it live in the studio, in the tradition. Their playing is at an all-time high, and Bill thought their musical conversation was “flawless.”

Sam was a happy vocalist. His own “Milk Man,” a song about his nephew, has lyrics from his wife, Joni. The duet with Bonnie on “Long Distance Call,” he humbly admitted, was classic. “We go good together, man.” “Last Night” was done in memory of Sam’s very good friend, the late Ed Bradley of Sixty Minutes. And “Why People Like That” was particularly satisfying. “I just like the way the slide sounds and everything. I knew Scott is a great slide player too, plus he is a great lead guitarist. And I know we would put our touch to it, the Little Feat touch. So we just sort of did it. Scott just adds a lot to it and he answers to what I’m singing.”

SAM’S PLACE scratches a deep itch. Sam added, “I’m very happy because I was never expecting anything like that. I mean, I have wanted to, but I just wasn’t expecting it to come to fruition. It was a long wait, but it’s satisfying.”

LITTLE FEAT will be busy this summer on the road. From touring with the Tedeschi Trucks Band to headline shows with The Wood Brothers, Los Lobos, Marc Broussard, Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel, The Steel Wheels, and Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, there will be plenty of chances to boogie with the band. For their Baltimore, MD show on June 14, LITTLE FEAT will perform their classic 1973 album, Feats Don’t Fail Me Now, in its entirety. Tickets are available HERE.

ABOUT LITTLE FEAT:

The members of Little Feat emerged from the pandemic with their sense of humor, chops, and collective joy in playing intact on their 2024 album Sam’s Place. Over the past three years, they’ve focused tours on their epic live album Waiting for Columbus and re-issues of some of their classic albums (Sailin’ Shoes, Dixie Chicken, and Waiting for Columbus). Audience response has been rapturous. The band builds on a deep, over 50-year history. Little Feat used a combination of elite musicianship and brilliant, idiosyncratic songwriting to create a repertoire that transcends all boundaries. California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country and rockabilly mixed with New Orleans swamp boogie led to a powerful sound that has kept the audience dancing for decades. Their groove – in songs like “Dixie Chicken,” “Spanish Moon,” “Fat Man in the Bathtub,” and “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” is a continuous thread of excellence that embraces the qualities of exploration that make up Little Feat, its music, while honoring their brothers that began this journey decades ago: Lowell George, Richie Hayward, and Paul Barrere. Their legacy is honest and durable with no end in sight. It has always been about the songs and musicianship. They’re in top form now with Scott Sharrard on lead guitar/vox and Tony Leone on drums/vox, and with founder Bill Payne on keys/vox, Fred Tackett on guitars/vox, Kenny Gradney on bass, and Sam Clayton on percussion/vox.
