“WASTING WATER” IN Q&A

Rock artist IVA TORIC has shared a music sampler video allowing listeners to hear snippets taken from singles off her debut album THE DEVIL’S MARK (2020) and the new single “Wasting Water” featured on her anticipated Fall 2022 release DEAD RECKONING. IVA’s distinctive sound is shaped by her bond to nature through pagan imagery while lyrically tackling intense emotions surrounding mental health and self-esteem issues. Watch the sampler HERE and read below a Q&A with IVA on the inspiration behind her music.

IVA announced plans for DEAD RECKONING when she revealed its debut single “Wasting Water” with a music video premiere via Ghost Cult Magazine on September 23. Listen to IVA describe the meaning behind the track in this audio clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLYOO6LIhuw.

She also adds, “The takeaway message is don’t waste your water. Don’t waste your energy on people that don’t respect you and love you for who you are. You are strong enough to break free of toxic people and to turn off that faucet and save your time and your tears from falling down the drain.”

DEAD RECKONING was recorded with producer/engineer Jim Kaufman (Dee Snider, Danny Worsnop) and assistant producer Ryan Molder while being mastered by Grammy-Award winning engineer Ted Jensen (Evanescence, Alice In Chains, Green Day). IVA enlisted a backing band consisting of Gregg Cash (guitars, bass, arrangement) and Dylan Howard (drums), both of which previously worked on her debut album.

Q&A with IVA TORIC

You’ve stated before that your music is inspired by nature and pagan symbolism. Can you explain how you utilize these elements in your sound?

“I like my sound to be as raw and authentic as it can be. I add my own touch to rock while honoring what came before me. Just like nature, my sound is both powerful and subtle. Picture deep rooted and gnarled old trees with delicate new blossoms on its branches. I play with contrast: light and darkness, personal and anthemic.”

“The band and I use a lot of vintage equipment in our production and recording because we want to strike a harmonious balance between old school garage rock and roll and modern sounds. The old is new again like the cycles of nature and the ancient cultures who revered and worshiped them.”

The lyrics of your songs are quite emotional and stirring, alluding to topics like depression, anxiety and self-esteem issues. Do these stem from real life experiences? What do you think people going through those same issues and emotions might be able to take away from listening to your music?

“All of my songs are based on my own lived experiences. My struggles and my realizations. I tend to gravitate toward the emotional and dark, but my music has an uplifting and relatable thread running through it: without the darkness there is no light.

When you, the listener, hear my music, you may hear heartbreaking honesty. You may hear parts of your own story echoed back to you in my voice. You may feel like you aren’t alone, and somebody understands. I hope you hear me–my heart and mind reaching out to join you on your journey through this life.”

Can you share any progressions you’ve made on your upcoming album, musically and/or lyrically and how you developed those? Did the pandemic have any influence on your writing? If so, please elaborate.

“I wrote and recorded a new album during the pandemic, and I named it ‘Dead Reckoning’ because I felt like I was searching for something within the deep depression the pandemic brought me. It opened thoughts that may have been closed to me in other circumstances and when I wrote it, I was very much alone. The music is even darker and has a sense of solitude. The lyrics explore my relationships with myself and others. There is more raw honesty. More nature imagery. More vintage rock sounds. And more pleading angelic vocals that will reach in and pluck a string deep inside your heart.”

Describe ‘Iva Toric’ in 5 words

Hauntingly evocative symphonic rock singer-songwriter IVA TORIC spent the summer following the early days of the global pandemic writing material for her sophomore album DEAD RECKONING due in fall 2022. The record includes instrumentation from Gregg Cash (guitars, bass, arrangement) and Dylan Howard (drums) and was recorded with producer/engineer Jim Kaufman and assistant producer Ryan Molder, all of whom previously worked with IVA on her debut 2020 album The Devil’s Mark. Grammy Award-winning engineer Ted Jensen (Evanescence, Alice In Chains, Green Day) handled mastering duties.

IVA premiered DEAD RECKONING’s debut single “Wasting Water” with a resonant music video yesterday (September 23) via Ghost Cult Magazine. The video was recorded by Myles Erfuth and incorporates nature elements from the shooting location in Kernville, CA. “Wasting Water” is available now across all digital platforms HERE and its music video can be seen streaming below or directly via YouTube HERE.

“‘Wasting Water’ invokes the power of water to describe a deteriorating domestic relationship,” declares IVA. “I wanted to explore the reciprocal existence between humans and water–how it both nourishes us and destroys us, and how we both cherish and waste it. As we change the course of rivers and pollute groundwater, we simultaneously need water to survive. We try to control it, but it breaks free of our chains and causes mass destruction. It is profound to think how similar our relationship with water is to our relationships with each other, with time, and with life itself. My songwriting is about tapping into the collective human experience, so this song is both deeply personal and universal. As you listen, ask yourself ‘in what aspects of my life am I wasting water?’’

On the video for “Wasting Water,” IVA shares: “We shot the video in Kernville, California on the beautiful Kern River. We incorporated nature, snakes, flowing water, and sorcery into the video’s imagery and added a captivating emotional storyline. The result is both beautiful and unapologetically dark and sets the tone for my next release coming out in fall of 2022.”

GOODBYE
TO HELP ERASE STIGMA SURROUNDING MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS

Melodic doom rock singer-songwriter-artist IVA TORIC is excited to unleash her debut album The Devil’s Mark today, October 30. Produced by Jim Kaufman (Danny Worsnop, Them Evils), its 14 tracks combine doom-laden riffs and dark folk melodies with lyrical and visual nods to various aspects of modern paganism and witchcraft. Adjacent to the release—and just in time for Halloween—IVA has also issued an evocative music video for its fifth single, “Goodbye,” which visually reflects IVA’s lifelong struggle with mental health issues and depression. It was premiered yesterday, October 29, via FolkNRock who declared that the “thought-provoking piece perfectly balances the subject’s seriousness while giving a musically pleasant listening experience of angelic vocals and heavy soundscapes.” Watch it streaming below or on YouTube HERE.

“I was inspired to write this song after learning some heartbreaking details about the tragic suicide of a thirteen-year-old boy,” shares IVA. “We have a mental health crisis in the United States. There is still a stigma against mental health conditions and treatment is rarely affordable if it is available at all. I have personally been impacted by suicides of loved ones and have suffered with suicidal thoughts myself. This song is my reflection on this darkness.”

GOODBYE - Iva Toric

The Devil’s Mark is available now across all digital platforms HERE.
Limited copies of the album on 2LP gatefold vinyl are also available including bundle options with an exclusive branded t-shirt and a sticker featuring the cover artwork (seen above). Get yours now directly from IVA’s webstore at www.ivatoric.com/shop.

IVA unveiled the album’s debut single “Dark Side of Me” in January 2020 with an exclusive music video premiere via KERRANG! who lauded her “syncretic approach to dark culture, mixing the organic darkness of Uada, the psychedelic hues of Soundgarden, and the goth elegance of Maria Brink.” She continued to release two more original tracks “Actions Speak Louder” (premiered via Ghost Cult Magazine) and “Finally Today” (premiered via Metal Injection) as well as a dynamic cover of Tori Amos’ “Crucify.”

The Devil’s Mark features guest musicians Gregg Cash (Josh Todd and the Conflict, ex-Dorothy) on bass, Kemble Walters (Juliette & The Licks, Aeges) on guitars, Dylan Howard (Aeges) on drums and Sasha Smith on keys.

“’The Devil’s Mark’ was born out of curiosity and exploring what I didn’t know was possible,” says IVA. “It’s my debut solo album after working in other bands and playing music non-professionally for many years. I wanted to see what I could create and how my art would impact others. I was hesitant to release this music into an uncertain world amidst a pandemic, environmental disasters, and social unrest, but now more than ever we need music to bring us together and soothe our souls. I have hope for the future–uncertain though it may be–and I hope ‘The Devil’s Mark’ finds its place in your hearts amidst the chaos.”

‘THE DEVIL’S MARK’ IN EXCLUSIVE Q&A

Hailing from San Francisco, CA, IVA TORIC is truly a one-woman force to be reckoned with. She combines her multi-instrumental talents with haunting melodic/symphonic vocals over dark folk and doom-laden riffs on her debut single “Dark Side of Me.” The ethereal music video was premiered exclusively with KERRANG earlier this week (TuesdayJanuary 14) which lauded it as a “syncretic approach to dark culture, mixing the organic darkness of Uada, the psychedelic hues of Soundgarden, and the goth elegance of Maria Brink.” Drawing from various aspects of modern paganism and witchcraft, IVA TORIC will self-release her debut album THE DEVIL’S MARK this fall.

“I wrote “Dark Side of Me” about my lifelong struggle with chronic depression and how sometimes I find myself desperately fighting off dark thoughts as they creep uninvited into my consciousness,” reveals IVA. “The lyrics are honest and raw, and for anybody who has struggled with their own mental health, self-esteem or body image, you’ll find a part of yourself gazing back at you from within this song.”
“I’ve always loved dark witchy imagery,” IVA says. “I relate to the earthbound connections and message from that belief system. It is a unique counterculture belief that appeals to me.”

Q&A WITH IVA TORIC
What inspired you to become a musician? Who are some of your biggest influences?

I have always been drawn to music, so I think I would have ended up being a musician one way or another but growing up poor had a big impact. My family didn’t have the means to buy music, so all I had was the radio. If I liked a song and wanted to hear it again, I had to either wait for it to come on again, or I had to learn it so I could play it myself. I learned to listen very carefully to music as a child so I could recreate it later on my keyboard. That provided a foundation for my more formal music education later in my life.
My influences are wide. I grew up listening to 90s rock and alternative on the radio. Alice In Chains has always been a favorite of mine–I love their unique harmonies. I also like 70s and 80s rock and that gave me a taste for more progressive sounds. Once I was able to download music and trade burned CDs with friends I got into metal. So, what comes out when I write is a product of everything I’ve heard throughout my life. It’s definitely not something I can point to and say, “that’s where I got my sound.”

Your first single is titled “Dark Side of Me,” how did you pick this to be the first music people hear from you on this project? What is the overall theme?

I wanted people to hear something dark and deeply personal from me for my debut. I put a lot of myself into my lyrics and I hope that authenticity shines through in this first single and draws people in to want to hear more.
I wrote ‘Dark Side of Me’ about my lifelong struggle with chronic depression and how sometimes I find myself desperately fighting off dark thoughts as they creep uninvited into my consciousness. The lyrics are honest and raw, and for anybody who has struggled with their own mental health, self-esteem, or body image, you’ll find a part of yourself gazing back at you from within this song.

When people hear your music, what message do you want them to take from it?

I want people to know they are not alone. I want people to feel connected to my music and find their own meanings within my lyrics.

Tell us about your songwriting process. Do you have a special routine? What outside influences do you use for inspiration?

My songwriting process isn’t a set routine and it depends on what is going on in my life and whether I’m writing with other people or not.
For DSOM, I wrote it alone at my keyboard, and I wrote the lyrics and the music at the same time. This isn’t always how it goes. Sometimes I write lyrics first and put them to music later. Sometimes I write music first. It’s all organic for me and I try to remain open and flexible and let the music come to me.

To write, I use my life or current events. Sometimes I use stories others have told me. As long as it’s something I can tap into and put myself in the story, I’ll use it. DSOM was like a journal entry. It’s all coming from deep within me.

The video for “Dark Side of Me” is very ethereal with pagan/wiccan occult references, do you relate to this belief system? Was there anything special about the location where it was filmed?

I’ve always loved dark witchy imagery. Anything that’s against mainstream and unique appeals to me.
I wanted the video to have a nature element, so we found this beautiful spot north of LA with lots of dead branches and a dry creek bed and we brought in a lovely old crow to be part of the magic. I think the location made the video super special.

What can listeners expect to hear from your future singles/upcoming album?

More dark, personal lyrics. More haunting melodies. More fallen angel vocals. More heavy guitars and driving bass. More technically bad ass drums. More sick keys. The album is full of this plus some great songwriting from amazing co-writers. It’s a wonderful album and I can’t wait to share it with the world.

Is there anything else you want to add?

Just that I’m honored to be here. I’ve worked hard for many years to make this happen and I’m finally realizing my dream. It feels right.
