In advance of the EP, TASH recently released (July 5) a new track, “Bitter Lovers.” The song–which follows two previous singles, “James Dean” and “New York”–takes a different turn with a collaboration featuring American soul R&B artist BJ The Chicago Kid. The song showcases their combined exceptional chemistry and creative synergy. The journey began when BJ shared a demo with Tash during their tour in September 2022.

SUGAR was co-engineered, produced, composed and arranged by TASH who played every single instrument on the EP. TASH–who withheld releasing any new projects for over two years–came into the EP with a refreshing perspective, described as a combination of past, present and future workings. The new release embodies their commitment to innovation and artistic exploration. Fans will hear this as a teaser of an “album cut in half.”

TASH reveals that the EP’s theme serves as a reflection piece, encapsulating their life from 2021 to 2023. It is a captivating storytelling experience incorporating cryptic wording and musical style, leaving the true message open to interpretation. TASH ensures that no one will ever fully discover the true meaning of the message.

TASH wrote the songs for the SUGAR in the comfort of their own home, studio, and mind, with their notebook serving as a creative companion throughout the journey. This intimate environment allowed TASH to explore their musical vision and fully bring it to life.

TASH SULTANA Announces ‘Sugar’ EP Set For August 11 Release, New Track And Video For “Bitter Lovers” Featuring BJ The Chicago Kid Out Today (July 5)

TASH SULTANA
ANNOUNCES ‘SUGAR’ EP OUT AUGUST 11

TASH SULTANA–multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer, and entrepreneur–is making waves with the announcement of their upcoming EP, SUGAR, set for release August 11 via their own label, Lonely Lands Records, and available for pre-order now here. Listen to “Bitter Lovershere and watch the video here.

In advance of the EP, TASH has released a new track, “Bitter Lovers,” out July 5. The song–which follows two previous singles, “James Dean” and “New York”–takes a different turn with a collaboration featuring American soul R&B artist BJ The Chicago Kid. The song showcases their combined exceptional chemistry and creative synergy. The journey began when BJ shared a demo with Tash during their tour in September 2022.

TASH explains, “Pretty sure it’s like any typical modern-day music collab. We had been following each other for a while cause I’m a fan of what he does, and lo and behold, one morning, I woke up, and there was a nice little message in my DM’s from BJ saying, ‘let’s fucking do a track.’ Now here we are.”

TASH began working on the track in their own Lonely Lands Studio laying down the verse and chorus harmonies and flipping the ending with beat sampling, heavy basslines, and a sax solo. But the missing piece wasn’t filled until February 2023, with the final touches laid in person at a Los Angeles studio. BJ’s verse was crafted on the spot, and the harmonies were laid before the verse, an interesting approach to working almost completely backwards.

“It means something different to both of us, which is why we decided to split a verse each and come together in the chorus,’ TASH explains. “For me, some people just think you’re going to be waiting around forever, in any capacity, for a friend, lover, or family member. I got boundaries with people, and that’s what I’m getting at in this track.”

“This was one I had in the stash waiting for a good home, or I would use it myself,” BJ says. “So happy Tash loved it as much as myself. This one will only get better with time.”

Fans of TASH can expect a mature approach in this EP, as it artfully blends sonics of past works NOTION, FLOW STATE and TERRA FIRMA. TASH skillfully weaves these elements together, imparting the lessons learned from the present moment. With their unique blend of musicality and introspection, TASH SULTANA will continue to captivate and inspire fans, delivering a transformative and deeply meaningful experience with their new EP.

TASH SULTANA’S
LATEST SINGLE, “NEW YORK,”
CAPTURES THEIR ELECTRIC ENERGY
IN A CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS

SINGLE IS RELEASED IN ADVANCE OF TASH’S
MASSIVE 50-DATE TOUR
ACROSS EUROPE, THE UK, AND NORTH AMERICA

TASH SULTANA, the gender-fluid multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer, and entrepreneur, is set to release their second single, “New York,” on May 10, from an as-yet untitled EP out later this year through their label Lonely Lands Records.

LISTEN TO NEW YORK HERE

Amid a global lockdown, the music industry struggled, with tours and festivals cancelled left and right. During this time, TASH found themselves again hidden in their studio. “New York” is a track written about a specific experience in the city itself.

“I will never forget a time last year when I was so f**ked up, TASH says. “It was before my Pier 17 show [2022], one of the lowest points of my life, professionally and personally, and I just wanted to know what it is or what I could do to make it stop. Do I run, do I scream, do I jump into the water, do I cry, what’s it going to take to get me through the night.”

It began as a little jam project on their hard drive, written in just an hour on a keyboard. What started as a simple experiment eventually evolved into a powerful and reflective piece of music written in crypticism with hidden stories camouflaged in happy sonics. It’s a common approach for TASH—their darkest songs usually sound the happiest.

“I have always found New York hard to find my place in,” TASH explains. “Everything is so fascinatingly fast that I think people are running from something. The city never sleeps, and its people don’t either. Among the chaos, how do you cope, drink it, smoke it or medicate it away? What do people do to get through the night.”

“New York” showcases a different approach to songwriting, focused heavily on beat production and sample flipping. The listener hears TASH taking a different musical approach than in previous material. TASH has remained tight lipped about the true meaning of the track, saying that “it’s not quite what you hear it as. I am telling a story, and it’s not a happy one either. ‘Cover me in sugar just to get me through the night’ is a reference to self-medicating yourself just to get by, which is something many people face as a coping mechanism in society.”

One key element that sets TASH SULTANA apart is their ability to effortlessly blend various musical genres, including pop, hip hop, funk, reggae, alternative, indie, rock, jazz and psychedelic folk. Their dynamic live shows, which feature TASH playing multiple instruments, including guitar, bass, drums, synth, keys, mandolin, trumpet, saxophone, flute and pan flutes/pipes, just to name a few, have seen crowds amass in thousands to watch what can only be fully experienced in person.

In June and October of 2023, TASH will embark on an extensive 50-date international touring schedule taking in the EU/UK and North America. Fans can expect to be blown away by the artist’s genre-defying sound and electrifying live performances.

TASH explains, “Every tour is a professional and personal cycle, and I feel that what is laying ahead of me is the best yet to come.” With this dedication and passion, it’s no wonder that TASH has become one of the most exciting Australian exports.

Full tour dates at https://www.tashsultana.com

TASH has recently been making waves in the music industry, winning the 2023 Rolling Stone Global Artist Award (Australia) and delivering captivating live performances as a headliner at four festivals: Cali Vibrations, alongside Snoop Dogg and Jack Johnson; last month’s Vintage Vibes; Lazy Mountain; and Bluesfest. TASH SULTANA‘s virtuosic guitar skills and mesmerising voice captivated the audience from start to finish. Tonedeaf described their genre-defying sound as a “masterclass in musical experimentation and innovation.” At the same time, The Music praised their proficiency as a multi-instrumentalist, using guitar, bass, drums, beats, drums, synth, keys, flute, pan flute, pan pipes, mandolin trumpet, and saxophone to create a tapestry of sound created by live looping” Tash’s energetic performances are a testament to their unique sound and position as one of Australia’s most exciting exports with a global reach.”

In addition to their live shows, TASH’S last single, “James Dean,” amassed over 2.3 million streams. The track’s accompanying video has had over 250,000 views on YouTube. Watch HERE

TASH SULTANA
ANNOUNCES 2023 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR
29 DATES INCLUDE SHOWS IN CITIES THEY HAVE NEVER PERFORMED IN AS WELL AS FESTIVAL APPEARANCES INCLUDING SEA.HEAR.NOW, FORMAT FESTIVAL AND MEMPHO MUSIC FESTIVAL
TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY, APRIL 28

Since they broke through into the Australian music scene more than a decade ago, TASH SULTANA has been nothing less than a musical force.

The gender-fluid multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer and entrepreneur has carved out every step in their musical journey over the last 15 years. This has taken them from performing open mics night all over Australia, busking the streets of Melbourne to releasing platinum records, accumulating billions of streams and selling hundreds of thousands of concert tickets worldwide. TASH has continued to rocket up the charts and win awards across the globe including the Rolling Stone (AU) 2023 Global Artist of the Year.

Following the news that they will be touring Europe this year, TASH SULTANA has just announced they will be headlining another series of North American shows from August to October 2023. Visiting some cities they have never performed in before as well some huge festivals, TASH SULTANA is back.

“New Cities, New Dates, North America … I’m Coming Back,” TASH says.

TASH recently released the first single “James Dean,” from their upcoming EP due out later this year. This will be the first time North American fans will have to see new music performed live.

“James Dean” is a powerful and soulful song about self-reflection and transformation. It’s a heartfelt ode to learning who your true friends are and having the courage to cut ties with those who don’t add value to your life. The song is driven by a strong guitar riff and a steady beat, while TASH’s passionate vocals entice you to reflect on the relationships you have and how you can make the necessary changes to move forward in life.

TASH began playing the guitar at the age of three after being gifted the instrument from their late grandfather. From there TASH began to pick up other instruments such as piano, keyboard, synth, bass, drums, percussion, beat making, sampling, beatboxing, trumpet, saxophone, flute, mandolin, oud, harmonica, lap steel and panpipes. TASH developed their own unique style of playing involving percussive and finger tapping style guitar coinciding with a vocal range stretching five octaves. TASH and their team also designed a custom loop station which took over two years to build to meet the needs of the intricate and one-of-a-kind performance style.

It all began with the refusal to conform to normal society; this pushed the young artist into pubs and clubs and then eventually onto the streets of Melbourne to busk, where they harnessed crowd stopping performances on Melbourne’s famous Bourke Street. From there, a viral bedroom recording of “Jungle” in 2016 skyrocketed the artist off the street and in front of the world.

TASH has since broken attendance records at sold out global arena tours, selling out the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the second time in just five minutes. In 2019 alone, TASH sold over half a million tickets across the globe. TASH’s second album, the #1 ARIA-charting TERRA FIRMA, arrived three years after the ARIA-winning debut album FLOW STATE.

In 2022 TASH released a special MTV UNPLUGGED (LIVE IN MELBOURNE) album featuring live performances recorded at Melbourne’s Iconic Chapel off Chapel. The record is an intimate look at an artist thriving in their natural element. TASH’s MTV unplugged performance was the most successful of any Australian artist to date, having their performance shared in over 160+ different countries.

These shows are just the start of another huge year for TASH.

TASH SULTANA, a gender-fluid multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer, and entrepreneur, has been a powerful presence in the music industry for the last decade. Today (March 13), they have shared “James Dean,” the first single from an upcoming EP out later this year (TBA) through their label, Lonely Lands Records.

LISTEN TO JAMES DEAN HERE

“James Dean” is a powerful and soulful song about self-reflection and transformation. It’s a heartfelt ode to learning who one’s true friends are and having the courage to cut ties with those who don’t add value to one’s life. The song is driven by a strong guitar riff and a steady beat, while TASH‘s passionate vocals entice listeners to reflect on the relationships they have and how they can make the necessary changes to move forward in life.

“I feel like the entire point of my career has always been DIY,” TASH says. “I’ve always produced everything, written everything, played every single instrument you hear, engineered it, co-engineered and sometimes even mixed and mastered. I have always done all of that but I feel like people still just don’t get it and to me it’s the most important message to send out. I remember once someone in an interview literally asked me ‘who is your guitarist’—I had to laugh. So I do it all. I have had great mentoring with my studio engineer Richard Stolz. That’s very important to highlight. He’s taught me a lot over the last few years.

“I actually wrote ‘James Dean’ in December 2021 when I took another trip falling off the face of the earth—I feel like that’s where most of my songs come from, the pits of hell.”

Their first release, the Notion EP, accumulated multi-platinum singles, and TASH’s debut album Flow State landed in 2018, quickly becoming gold-certified and spawning platinum and gold records with the singles “Mystik” and “Murder to the Mind.” Flow State would go on to win an ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album as well as international awards cementing TASH’s status as one of Australia’s biggest musical talents.

In 2019 alone, TASH sold more than 500,000 concert tickets globally. Over the years, they’ve notched up major international appearances at festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Montreal Jazz Festival. They sold out the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in just five minutes. Committed to delivering the highest quality of live performance, TASH spends most days in practice, again with DIY attitude TASH and their team custom-designed a loop station that took over two years to build–it is the only one in the world that can operate at such a level.

Their acclaimed second album Terra Firma landed in 2021, garnering widespread praise for TASH’s raw and reflective songwriting and ambitious musical arrangements. Like everything before it, the entirety of the record was carved by TASH–every instrument played, every bit of musical arrangement, every bit of production. But for the first time, Terra Firma saw TASH bring in a couple of close friends and collaborations to co-write–including Matt Corby, Dann Hume, Jerome Farah, and Josh Cashman.

Terra Firma reached #1 on the charts in their native Australia and secured multiple nominations and a win for Rolling Stone Australia’s Best Single for “Pretty Lady.”

The MTV Unplugged (Live in Melbourne) album was released in 2022. A stunning display of TASH’s consummate talents, it gave audiences an intimate glimpse at an artist that has grown immeasurably since they began their musical journey. Not only that, TASH mixed the record entirely by themself at their own studio, Lonely Lands Studio.

Their extensive catalogue has nearly broken the internet, notching billions of streams and counting.

In recent years, TASH’s skill has expanded far beyond the studio. In 2019, TASH launched Lonely Lands Agency with Lemon Tree Music’s Regan Lethbridge and UNIFIED’s Jaddan Comerford. In the space of a few years, the boutique booking agency has grown into one of the biggest and most reputable in the country.

In addition, TASH is also the driver of Lonely Lands Records, the label through which they put out all their music. It’s this natural instinct for the music business and attention to detail that have made them a formidable presence in the Australian industry over the last few years. As TASH says, over the years, they’ve developed an incredible team around them to make their vision a reality.

“I am completely in control of everything, literally everything,” they say. “But when you’ve got the team around you, you develop a clockwork system where you learn from each other…none of this is possible without a team around me. We have a tight, tight team.”

TASH SULTANA Talks About Their New ‘MTV Unplugged, Live In Melbourne’ Album’ And North American 2022 ‘Terra Firma’ Headlining Tour In New Q&A

DATE: MAY 31, 2022

TASH SULTANA
TALKS ABOUT THEIR
‘MTV UNPLUGGED, LIVE IN MELBOURNE’ ALBUM’
OUT JUNE 3
AND NORTH AMERICAN 2022
‘TERRA FIRMA’ HEADLINING TOUR
IN NEW Q&A

In a revealing new Q&A, TASH SULTANA, the gender fluid multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer and engineer, has offered more details and perspective about their upcoming album–MTV UNPLUGGED, LIVE IN MELBOURNE, out June 3 on Mom + Pop–and North American tour launching June 10 in Las Vegas. The Q&A is below, along with more info about the album and the tour dates.

TASH SULTANA
Q&A:

Q: Congrats on the upcoming release of the MTV Unplugged album. Can you let us know why you feel this live album is an important work for you?

TASH SULTANA: This is important to me because it’s the first record I’ve mixed. I honestly just wanted to give myself a project when I had nothing on the horizon and see what I could do. It took me three months because I was fussy with it, story of my life–I mean there’s always things you will change looking back but I just wanted to have that under my belt.

Q: American concertgoers know you as a solo performer. Can you talk about the dynamic of having a band onstage with you for this live recording?

TASH SULTANA: I think it’s important to make the distinction that I am a SOLO performer. I always write everything on all my records. I’ve played all the instruments on everything I’ve ever written (apart from the obvious collabs) or released as well as produced, arranged, co-engineered and so forth and I wanted to stay true to the record by extending the groove. I just physically ran out of arms and legs to play everything and that’s where these session musicians came into the equation.

Q: The MTV Unplugged album shines a light on your body of work so far including your version of Bon Iver’s “Flume.” Can you tell us why you selected these particular songs for this performance and why you feel they work together as an artistic statement?

TASH SULTANA: The actual set was an hour and 30 minutes long. The producers and I had a great time trying to work out what we had to condense for what got shown on air which was another reason why I wanted to release the record in its entirety. It’s just a little bit of everything, it’s a bit of the oldies, the newbies, looping, acoustic, band stuff. I wanted to do the EXACT opposite of what everyone else has done, so as you can see it is not “Unplugged”–it’s very much PLUGGED in and that was the point.

Q: Your upcoming tour has already generated an array of sold-out shows immediately upon announcement, including your return to Red Rocks in Colorado which sold out in a matter of minutes. Can you talk about how deeply satisfying this must be for you as an artist who knows they are connecting with a discerning audience who wants purity over commerciality and who wants to experience musical transcendence instead of seeing a slickly choreographed show?

TASH SULTANA: I think that’s a question better answered by the audience themselves. From what I know, given what they tell me is that they come because it’s REAL. It’s an emotional, physical, metaphysical, spiritual journey from the beginning until the end for myself and everyone bearing witness. It’s how I feel when I play. I am not performing the songs, I become the music. The stage is the pinnacle of my existence and my highest place, I revolve everything in my life around stepping out on stage. I treat my mind, body, spirit like an athlete treats themselves for the gold medal they’ve always dreamt of having. I see the vision, I create it, I work for it, I manifest it, I prepare for it, I train for it and therefore I attain it.

Q: You’re known as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, engineer and mixer. By being so multi-faceted and talented—in a way that brings to mind Prince—nothing gets in the way of your artistic vision. At the same time, are there any challenges for you since you oversee all these aspects?

TASH SULTANA: I appreciate other people’s feedback, respected feedback obviously. I would never listen to someone critiquing me who had no positive impact on my life, I don’t hear the hate, I hear the construct. But I suppose the downfall is being a perfectionist, the bar is always set higher, and I never reach the end, so I only compete with yesterday’s version of myself and sometimes I can be hard to satisfy.

###

The North American headlining tour kicks off June 10 in Las Vegas at The Chelsea. Marking their first concerts here in three years, the run includes sold-out shows at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Sandy, UT (Sandy Amphitheater), New York City (The Rooftop at Pier 17), Portland, ME (State Theatre), Boston, MA (House of Blues), Victoria BC (Royal Theatre BC), Forest Grove, OR (McMenamins Grand Lodge), Seattle (Paramount Theatre), Oakland (Fox Theater) and Los Angeles (Hollywood Palladium).

The tour also includes stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, the Bonnaroo Music Festival (June 19) and more. These dates follow TASH’s 2022 global ‘Terra Firma’ shows in the United Kingdom and Europe this past March/April with TASH set to return there for additional shows set for September.

The MTV UNPLUGGED album powerfully shines a light on TASH’s body of work and underlines their impact as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, engineer and mixer. By being so multi-faceted and talented—in a way that brings to mind Prince—nothing gets in the way of TASH’s artistic vision. The MTV UNPLUGGED, LIVE IN MELBOURNE album track listing is as follows:

‘MTV UNPLUGGED, LIVE IN MELBOURNE’ ALBUM

JUNE 10 IN LAS VEGAS,
WITH SOLD-OUT SHOWS IN
NEW YORK, BOSTON, LOS ANGELES,

WORLDWIDE FANS CAN EXPERIENCE THE
RED ROCKS GLOBAL LIVESTREAM
VIA FLYMACHINE ON JUNE 12

TASH SULTANA, the gender fluid multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer and engineer, will return to North America for a headlining tour that kicks off June 10 in Las Vegas at The Chelsea. These dates coincide with the June 3 release of the album MTV UNPLUGGED, LIVE IN MELBOURNE on Mom + Pop (see the track listing below).

The Red Rocks show sold out in just five minutes and marks a triumphant return for TASH, who previously sold out the historic venue on their 2019 tour. To highlight this appearance, TASH wanted to ensure that fans who were unable to attend the show would be able to experience the performance via a just-announced live stream. TASH says, “For those who can’t be there I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR, RED ROCKS GLOBAL LIVESTREAM: Join the virtual crowd and catch my sold-out Red Rocks show live–from anywhere–on Flymachine! You can invite your friends + watch the show together with your cameras on.” Get your pass now at fly.live/tash using promo code: TERRAFIRMA22.”

“Finally, after 3 years I get to come back to North America,” TASH says. “Just wait to see what I have in store. I’ve been working on this new show since 2020 and I’ve been patiently waiting to bring it to the world. Now it’s my time,” says TASH.

This run will see TASH SULTANA performing their sophomore album Terra Firma in North America for the first time as well as hits from Notion EP and Flow State, while also expanding the groove into new territories. SULTANA has remained tight-lipped about what the new show may include but has promised it’s an extension of ‘what already is’ and what they are best known for.

01 Musk
02 Big Smoke
03 Mystik
04 Sweet & Dandy
05 Pretty Lady

WORLDWIDE TOUR DATES KICK OFF SEPTEMBER 1

With their sophomore album TERRA FIRMA, TASH SULTANA continues to expand their global success with more than one billion streams and their first #1 album on their native Australian ARIA Albums Chart, along with a Rolling Stone Australia cover story.

The February 19 release of the genre-defying 14-track album on Mom + Pop Music, composed, arranged, performed, engineered and produced by TASH, has been greeted with an array of critical accolades praising the artist’s artistic evolution. TASH–singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and electrifying performer–has added to the looped and layered jams with a dazzling patchwork of soul, funk, R&B, folk, rock, hip-hop–you name it. The result is TASH’s most ambitious triumph to date.

NME (UK) noted in their review that “The Aussie star embraces all sounds but maintains a delicate vulnerability on album number two…” with THE GUARDIAN (UK) saying “TERRA FIRMA is as expansive and chilled as we’ve come to expect from Sultana…” GUITAR PLAYER in the U.S. says: “It’s a deceptively crafty concoction that feels thoroughly organic and effortless.” NPR’s “All Songs Considered” also shined a light on the album in their “New Music Friday” coverage.

“Australian singer Tash Sultana released their sophomore album Terra Firma this week, offering up the grounding track ‘Blame It On Society.’ True to her sound, Sultana combines dizzying guitar chords with her measured lyrical delivery, pointing out the flaws that are ingrained our society.”

–Carolyn Droke, UPROXX, 2/23/21

Home

“…proficiency in around a dozen instruments, all contributing to the vast, looping sonic landscapes of Terra Firma…In many ways, Terra Firma reflects a centered, cerebral moment for Sultana. From the opening instrumental ‘Musk,’ Sultana launches into a bizarro world that’s awash in layered psychedelia. The whole album is like falling down a rabbit hole of serenity, punctuated by Sultana’s inevitable, crescendoing instrumentation.”

–Raffaela Kenny-Cincotta, RELIX, 1/29/21

“…Terra Firma is Tash’s most expansive effort to date. The final product pairs staggeringly raw songwriting with intricate instrumentation and lush production, fusing jazz, soul, funk, psych rock, and R&B influences along the way. Thematically, the album builds toward a sense of liberation, with the closing number literally called ‘I Am Free.’”

–Matt Wallock, AMERICAN SONGWRITER, 2/17/21

“Terra Firma is a record that listeners can get lost in. Sultana’s sonic presentation is spread across a collection of deeply introspective songs that touch on soul, funk, pop, R&B and hip-hop. There are dashes of rock and even folk. It’s a deceptively crafty concoction that feels thoroughly organic and effortless. Intoxicating guitar loops on blissed-out tracks like ‘Pretty Lady’ and ‘Sweet & Dandy’ bury themselves into the thicket of one’s senses, and the cavernous soundscapes that form the musical beds of ‘Coma,’ ‘Let the Light In’ and ‘I Am Free’ unfold like dreams. It’s all dynamic, head-turning stuff…”

Joe Bosso, GUITAR PLAYER (print), March 2021

“Terra Firma is a masterful mix of R&B, soul, indie-rock, alternative and shoegaze.” 9/10

–Miguel Costa, MUSIC CONNECTION, 2/23/21

“…Terra Firma is mostly rooted in laid-back, gentle grooves (you can slow dance to it, but this isn’t exactly a funk-fest), with more room for personal introspection and ruminations on relationships and one’s place in the larger world (as well as occasional observations on the unexpected consequences of fame)…Sultana’s vocals have gained some range and nuance since their first album, and there’s a welcome sense of the artist embracing the joys of pushing the boundaries; the guitar work here is very fine but not flashy, and shares the stage with keyboards and other flavors that give the tracks a rich and varied sound. In short, Terra Firma confirms Tash Sultana isn’t interested in being your new favorite guitarist as much as they want to be a musician and songwriter with the talent and ambition to go in any direction they choose…they have the talent and vision to be an artist who is going to be around for a while, and it’s fascinating to imagine where they can go next. Terra Firma shows where they are now is already pretty impressive.”

ALLMUSIC.COM, 2/19/2021

Without a doubt Terra Firma is a relatable masterpiece made for the hearts that long to be mended by the power of music. Its intoxicating grooves and hypnotic riffs are instantly inviting, but with depth that reveals its rewards the more you absorb it. From the previously released evocative ‘Greed’ to the enthralling ‘Beyond The Pine,’ Tash departs from looped and layered jams towards meditative combinations of soul, funk, RnB, folk, rock, and hip hop. The 14-track album takes root into far-reaching sonic territory, while each song stands out with its individualistic flare and sound. Ultimately meshing together to create a flawless album that showcases Tash’s musical and lyrical growth.”

–Gibson Shaffer, GRATEFUL WEB, 11/30/2020

“No one makes music like Tash. Their ear for densely layered orchestration culminates in this transcendent, slightly psychedelic new track that reminds listeners that You are enough, to live in the present moment away from negative distractions. As Tash demonstrates their famously proficient guitar ability in the intro, the instrumentation quickly grows to include increasingly intoxicating layers of angelic chimes, organic samples, rich horns, fleeting harps, and much more…”

–Austin Miller, THIS SONG IS SICK, 1-22-21

“Groovy ‘Willow Tree’ is filled with colorful horns and the whimsical guitar, keys, and bass loops that made you obsessed with Tash in the first place. You glide through this magical journey, with Jeome Farah and Tash’s soulful vocals perfectly complementing each other, and you can’t help but get lost in it.”

–Nicole Proctor, EARMILK, 12/22/2020

“Terra Firma remains a remarkable experience that finds a way to demonstrate real human vulnerability while building mystique around its creator. Sultana learned guitar at age 3, reportedly plays 20 different instruments and composed, arranged, performed, engineered and produced just about every note of their first two albums–all by the age of 25. There’s nothing they can’t play and less they can’t do. But it’s the restraint shown in the minimalist moments that show why slowing down was the right choice for Sultana on Terra Firma.” 7/10

–Skott Bennett, RIFF MAGAZINE, 2/15/21

“…soulful and sublime outing. Whether she’s waxing mystical or being more forthcoming, Sultana’s art here is striking.”

–Kevin Wierzbicki, ANTIMUSIC.COM, 2/19/21

“Multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana’s sophomore effort Terra Firma bumps along, dripping with layers of early 90’s R&B, indie rock, and dream pop escapism. Playing all sounds while delivering floating vocals, Sultana is a musical force over the fourteen neo-new jack swing and soul/pop offerings.”

–Shawn Donohue, GLIDE MAGAZINE, 2/19/21

“Tash Sultana’s Terra Firma is a masterful piece of art that bends sound and genre to her will and gives us an unfettered look into her soul.”

–Austin Miller, THIS SONG IS SICK, 2/19/21

Tash Sultana’s long-awaited second record Terra Firma firmly secures their intrinsic, holistic artistry. And like the ponderous smoke-tendril of burning incense, Sultana’s slow jam snakes around your earholes with an enchanting athleticism.”

–Cassia Briscoe, HAPPY MAG TV, 2/19/21

“’Terra Firma’ maintains Sultana’s instrumental opulence but with a more mature and seasoned perspective that is flecked with vulnerability… This record definitively shows off the balance of Tash Sultana’s skills as a musician and as a songwriter as they try to find firm ground to stand on amidst the chaos of the world. Sultana is truly gifted, and their biggest challenge right now seems to be finding new ways to innovate and build upon an already complex, remarkably unique sound.”

ARIA Award winner TASH SULTANA has today released their sophomore album, TERRA FIRMA, out now on Mom + Pop Music.

LISTEN TO TERRA FIRMA NOW

Having already given fans five tastes of the music one can expect on TERRA FIRMA (“Sweet & Dandy,” “Willow Tree” feat. Jerome Farah, “Greed,” “Beyond The Pine” and “Pretty Lady”), the album showcases 14 tracks that are recognisably TASH SULTANA, but its lyricism delves deeper, its impact more nuanced. The expansive “Coma” flows with vision, the evocative “Greed” proffers a soul-funk examination of the corrupting influence of wealth and fame. And the idyllic love song “Let The Light In” feels close and warm–“I’ve just found my one. She’s a golden gem,” they smile when they speak of their fiancé. “Sweet & Dandy” is a slinky indictment on the internet era’s information overload. “But where’s the wisdom? Where’s the knowledge?” TASH asks. “Vanilla Honey”–named after the two flavoured cigars gifted to TASH from their partner–is a tender ode to how love can centre us amidst the chaos.

TERRA FIRMA sees TASH bare their soul on two levels. Spiritually, it arrived in a time of global detachment and acted as a conduit to reconnect to their core selves–something TASH had been dismissing during strenuous global tours. And musically, where its 14 tracks take root into far-reaching sonic territory.

TASH has added to the looped and layered jams with a dazzling patchwork of soul, funk, R&B, folk, rock, hip-hop–you name it. The result is TASH’s most ambitious triumph to date. It’s Erykah Badu meets Bon Iver, meets John Mayer, meets whatever.”

Written and recorded over a full year, from October 2019 to October 2020, TERRA FIRMA saw TASH in full flight as they recorded, engineered, performed, arranged, and produced the album themselves. Four to six days a week were spent in their Melbourne studio, and just when TASH surpassed the 200-day mark on the project, it was done.

Presented with a title inspired by finding their home within themselves, TERRA FIRMA is the work of a more confident, dynamic, and experienced musician. The record was conceived amid a period of self-reflection when life was involuntarily slowed down amid a global pandemic. When TASH wasn’t in the studio, they found time for surfing, gardening, writing poetry and a healthy balance from the hectic touring lifestyle that defined their existence.

While TERRA FIRMA still cements the oft-used description of a “one-person band”, the record hosts a first for TASH SULTANA with four carefully chosen co-writers. TASH collaborated with fellow ARIA winners in artist Matt Corby and producer Dann Hume (Courtney Barnett, Amy Shark) on “Pretty Lady,” “Crop Circles,” “Beyond the Pine” and “Greed.” Meanwhile, “Willow Tree,” the nocturnal groover about get-rich-quick pyramid schemes, features TASH’s high school friend Jerome Farah. Farah is signed to TASH’s own Lonely Lands Agency, launched in 2019. Finally, “Dream My Life Away,”an ethereal, guitar-driven duet, was co-written with close friend Josh Cashman, who TASH tapped as their tour support through America in 2017.

For TASH SULTANA, artistic growth is paramount. It makes sense then, that the live shows for TERRA FIRMA will showcase TASH in a new light. “2020 was about recording and writing the music. And this year will be about creating the show and bringing it to people,” says TASH. “The new live show is everything the live show already was, plus a few things up my sleeve–but you’ll have to be there to understand,” they tease.

“I’ll always be solo,” TASH adds. “That will never, ever, ever change.”

For TERRA FIRMA, the goal seemed simple: to make music that comes from a place that’s unashamedly honest and ventures new territory. Because if it does, you’ll never fuck up,” TASH reflects. “I want to be an artist and make music non-stop, and just set the bar for myself every single time.… I just wanted to feel better, be better, perform better, play better, sing better. To be a better musician. And I think this record does that.”

ARIA Award winner TASH SULTANA has today released another taste from their sophomore album, “Sweet & Dandy,” out now on Mom + Pop Music.

CHECK OUT ‘SWEET & DANDY’ HERE

Marking the fifth track from the upcoming TERRA FIRMA album out February 19, ‘Sweet & Dandy’ is recognizably TASH SULTANA, but deeper and more nuanced. The song is a slinky indictment on the internet era’s information overload with them asking the questions “But where’s the wisdom? Where’s the knowledge?”

Sweet & Dandy’ is about the process of withdrawing yourself from negative distractions and living in the present, always remembering that you are enough,” TASH explains. “You and you alone, you do not need the world to tell you to be a certain way.”

With a title inspired by the need to slow down and re-ground, TERRA FIRMA is the work of a more confident, dynamic and experienced musician. The manifestation of a period of self-reflection in which TASH slowed down to find time for surfing, studio, family, gardening and a healthy balance from the hectic touring lifestyle that defined their existence.

“I didn’t realize that I needed to create a space and home for myself to feel like a person again,” TASH says. “I just went inward and found a really peaceful place and wrote an album, and I feel really happy with it.”

Returning to earth after the dizzying heights of success, TERRA FIRMA is the sound of a more content and grounded TASH. Spiritually, the album finds the artist reconnecting to their roots, reminding themselves who they are and what it means to be human. Musically however, its 14 tracks take root into far-reaching sonic territory.

Almost every note on TERRA FIRMA was once again composed, arranged, performed, engineered and produced by TASH. But to kick-start a new era, the solo star–for the first time–opened themselves up to collaborators, starting with a 10-day writing session with fellow ARIA-winning Australian musician Matt Corby and producer Dann Hume (Courtney Barnett, Amy Shark, Angus & Julia Stone).

TERRA FIRMA was made with a lot of effort but feels effortless. Its intoxicating grooves and hypnotic riffs are instantly inviting, but with depth that reveals its rewards the more you absorb it.

Forever thinking of future career steps, TASH has assembled a live band to bring the record to life on stage (whenever that’s safe to do so). “The new live show is everything the live show already was, plus three other musicians on the stage for a small section of the show.” And they’re already greasing the wheels to begin producing and mentoring other artists.

Keen to get back out on the road doing what they love, TASH will be performing at WOMADelaide (Australia) in March. For more information on this show, head HERE, and for information on all other 2021 touring dates head HERE.

For TERRA FIRMA though, the goal seemed simple: to make music that comes from a place that’s real and from the heart. “Because if it does, you’ll never fuck up,” TASH reflects. “I just really wanted to like the art I was putting out…I just wanted to feel better, be better, perform better, play better, sing better. To be a better musician.”
