LISTEN TO ‘GREED’ HERE
“This song is about how people change around you when you achieve some sort of success,” TASH explains “People you’ve never had anything to do with try and climb into your life somehow, people you’ve known for ages suddenly go silent. People who never paid you for a gig suddenly want to book you. That person from high school that gave you shit for playing the guitar suddenly wants on the guest list. It’s a funny little thing all of this and what it does to people.”
Earlier this year, TASH released the first track and video “Pretty Ladyfrom her forthcoming album. The video featured members of the Teskey Brothers, Pierce Brothers and Baker Boy, professional dancers Emily Havae, Melissa Pham, Justin Anderson, Ash McKenzie & Matt Holly and Thalia Heffernan & Ryan McShane, Anna Seymour performing Auslan, as well as some of TASH’s friends, family, fans and of course, everyone’s favorite animal–doggos!
2019 was a year that saw TASH flourish both through live shows and releases–breaking attendance records in venues around the world, selling out the iconic Red Rocks in Colorado, plus the massive sold-outAustralia headline tour with over 70,000 tickets in that the country, while JUNGLEwas ARIA accredited 2x Platinum, Notion was ARIA accredited Platinum, and “Mystik,” “Murder to the Mind” and the NOTION EP were all ARIA accredited Gold. In streaming, TASH’s releases are currently sitting at over 1 billion total streams–an incredible feat for an artist that only released her debut album two years ago.

About TASH:
TASH SULTANA is an explosive live artist who has commanded global attention since homemade videos went viral. Tash was soon selling out major arenas globally and playing at the world’s biggest festivals – no mean feat for an artist who just a year before was recording songs on a go pro in a bedroom.
Since Tash’s grandfather gifted a guitar at the age of three, the self-taught artist quickly developed a unique style that has seen Tash breaking record attendances around the globe. Tash has mastered over 12 instruments, has a vocal that shines with a magical quality and a live show that needs to be seen to be believed.
The one-person powerhouse started out playing open mic nights on a fake id and busking on the streets of Melbourne, Australia. Recent accolades include over 1 Billion combined streams, an ARIA award for Blues and Roots Album of The Year with ‘Flow State’, smash single ‘Jungle’ coming in at #3 in triple j’s Hottest 100, achieving platinum sales for the Notion EP, double platinum sales for ‘Jungle’ and platinum sales for ‘Notion’ along with numerous gold certified singles. Tash’s live show has seen her become the only artist to sell out 3 Brixton Academy shows before their debut album along with selling another 500,000 tickets worldwide which recently culminated in a sold out performance at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, with noted stand out sets at Coachella & Lollapalooza.

After a world premiere on Australia’s “The Breakfast Show” (via national broadcaster triple j), multi-instrumentalist and global sensation TASH SULTANA has released her seductive new song “Pretty Lady,” out today (April 9) on Mom + Pop Music. Listen to the song here and watch the video here.

The video was created using clips of friends, family, and fans all around the world in isolation to spread positive energy into the world. All the participants will continue to spread the word with the #PrettyLadyChallenge on social media. To coincide with the single’s release, TASH also performed live on YouTube as part of their #Stayhome series through the pandemic on TASH‘s YouTube page.

“Pretty Lady” was co-written and made by TASH with Matt Corby and Dann Hume in TASH‘s own studio. The song is an exquisite showcase of storytelling that TASH has become known for, while also showcasing TASH‘s soulful and intimate vocals.

Reflecting on the track, TASH explains, “I’ve been trying to figure out how to write this song for like six years. I used to loop it and just free style to it when I was busking years ago, but I always got stuck on the same parts. I put the song in a box at the back of my mind and revisited it in November 2019. I had Dann (Hume) and Matt (Corby) spend some time in my studio and that’s when I decided to show them this song. It’s my first song I’ve collaborated with other players on.”

TASH‘s shows continue to garner many critical accolades. Here are pull quotes from some recent shows:

If a musician could ever be described as performing with every fiber of their being, Sultana would be it…It was a thrill watching Sultana stacking layers of sounds for the reggae-touched ‘Jungle or the exotic ‘Be the Smoke,’ creating walls of sound with drum machine snaps and bass rumbles, with synth swells and wavy guitar ripples. These bursts of looped audio would come and go at a whim, expand and compress, essentially acting as a base for Sultana to build new sounds on. Spry guitar lines would burst into blistering, Hendrix-style roars. Riffs would intoxicatingly slow down in mid-stride, like Sultana had just been hit with a tranquilizer dart. Jazz trumpet struts added a cool noir quality to the soundscapes, and mandolin sprints brought a fiery flair. Sultana’s voice was astounding, rising up to rafter-shattering cries, and recalling Billie Holiday’s soulful tone during the more intimate moments. There was beatboxing, and there was beatboxing in a pan flute.”
–Piet Levy,
JOURNAL SENTINEL, (Milwaukee, WI), 9/11/19
“The multi-talented 24-year-old performs alone (for the time being), utilizing loops and an array of drum pads alongside skillful playing on various guitars, horns, and keyboards. All that skilled musicianship is buoyed by Tash’s uniquely dream-like vocals which, depending on the song, can evoke comparisons to Macy GrayNorah JonesChristina Aguilera, and Chris Martin while still managing to sound wholly new and original. Tash’s songs themselves run the gamut of genres as well, boiling aspects of rock, trance, punk, funk, reggae and more into a uniquely entrancing musical brew…To see Tash Sultana perform is to enter into a certain indescribable atmosphere.”
–Andrew O’Brien,
LIVE FOR LIVE MUSIC, (New York City, NY), 9/5/19
“In support of her stellar 2018 debut, ‘Flow State’, Tash Sultana brought her unique live show to a packed house and delivered an hour-and-forty-five-minute set that never ceased to amaze. A straight-up guitar-goddess, Sultana tore through much of her set like Jimi Hendrix‘s spiritual offspring, always lost in the music and never anything less than elated to be making it. She made it very clear very quickly that her guitar was her partner up there, and their chemistry throughout the night was palpable bordering on overwhelming.”

Q&A

Multi-instrumentalist and global sensation TASH SULTANAis returning to North America for a fall 2019 tour that includes stops at Red Rocks Amphitheatre (Colorado) and the Central Park Summerstage (New York), along with a slot on the Ohana Festival (Los Angeles). Check out a Q&A with TASH below:

Q: You started busking on the streets of Melbourne. Did you have experiences back then that have shaped and inspired you as a musician?

TASH SULTANA (TS): I didn’t start out by busking, I started playing open mic nights and doing battle of the bands from when I was 13. I started busking after I finished high school. Nobody has to stop and give you their time when you’re busking, so you build and organic audience from the street and learn how to keep people’s attention.

Q: You’ve mastered multiple instruments that allow you to be a one-person band, from guitar and bass to percussion and even brass instruments. Does picking up and learning a new instrument come naturally to you or is it something that you work at?

(TS): I wouldn’t say that I have mastered anything, I just have a knack for learning new things and a curious mind that makes me interested in sound and instruments.

Q: When you’re working on new music, where do you draw inspiration from?

(TS): Wherever I am…it comes to me when it comes.

Q: Your live set-up is very intimate since you decorate the stage with a carpet and various personal items; it allows one to feel like they are witnessing a private performance. What inspired this presentation?

(TS): I like to give the environmental feeling that I’m at home in my lounge room. It makes performing less intimidating.

Q: Can you talk about what goes into creating your setlist?

(TS): I change up my setlist depending on the show and how I’m feeling that day but there’s a natural ebb and flow I go for usually.

Q: Speaking of audiences, you recently headlined some of the biggest arenas across UK & Europe and this fall you’ll return to the U.S. for an amphitheater tour and some festival dates (Ohana, Life Is Beautiful). Do you have anything special prepared for your return to the U.S.?

(TS): After every tour I go back to the studio and work with my crew to see how we can make the show better. We’ve overhauled the old show and put that to rest and now we’re moving forward with the new show. If you don’t change and try to be better, you just die creatively.

Q: What are you most looking forward to for the forthcoming tour? Are there any new cities you’re performing in that you haven’t visited before?

(TS): I’m looking forward to Red Rocks.

Q: What have your travels taught you so far?

(TS): That touring is not a holiday.

Q: What are your preshow rituals?

(TS): I use essential oils, voice vaporizing, infrared light therapy to induce the feeling of outside light which helps in dark dressing rooms. And I have my drum pad and my guitar.

Q: Can you describe your best gig ever–and possibly your worst one?

(TS): The worst gig I will spare from telling anybody. The best one I’ve had–so many I couldn’t pick one.

Q: What is your favorite album or songs to play on the long travel days?

(TS): Anything Soul and R&B.

Q: If you were to record a duet with a current artist, who might that be, and which song would you cover and why?

(TS): I wouldn’t cover a song, but I am working with other artists at the moment.

Q: If you overheard one fan talking to another after leaving a show of yours, what would you like to hear them say about the gig?

(TS): That it was a good show.

Here’s some critical feedback from the recent U.S. shows:

“The Australian artist–who has identified as non-binary and goes by the pronoun “they”–is exotic and androgynous, just like their music…[songs] showcased long, cascading guitar solos and Sultana’s soulful voice. While it was just one person onstage during the entire set, it sounded like a full band, with Sultana playing multiple instruments for each song and looping in sounds they’d created.”
MAGNET MAGAZINE (Shakey Knees Music Festival, Atlanta), 7/5/19

“…Sultana to jam away and transform each song into something entirely new. Sultana was patient, letting each song expand to its maximum tripadelic potential. Salvation let her squeal out tones like Clapton; the seductive Free Mind washed waves of loneliness through the amps; Jungle‘s wocka-wocka funk let her riff around like Prince or Sly Stone. She started each beat; she would stop it when she darn well pleased.”
–Jay Cridlin,TAMPA BAY TIMES (Jannus Live), 5/8/19

Last year was one of the biggest years in TASH‘s career. Highlights include the release of her debut album FLOW STATE (Mom and Pop Music) which entered the charts at #4 on the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart and also charted across the globe. FLOW STATE was also nominated for the prestigious Triple J Australian Album of the Year award and six ARIA’s (The Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards). Other recent accolades include over half a billion streams worldwide; the certified platinum singles “Jungle” and “Notion”; the certified Gold (internationally) Notion (EP) and the singles “Mystik” and “Murder To The Mind”; and record-breaking attendance at live shows around the world.

For those who have not yet experienced TASH live, TASH recently revealed “The Story So Far,” a three-part documentary series in partnership with YouTube Music that shows the journey from bedroom performances and busking to sold-out world tours. Check out the first two episodes now on TASH‘s channel here and here, with the third to follow this summer.

About TASH SULTANA:

TASH has been playing music since her grandfather gave her a guitar at just three years of age to using fake IDs throughout high school to play open mic nights and busking regularly on the streets of Melbourne. Stories of TASH‘s mesmerizing talent eventually began to spread and before long, her Facebook and YouTube videos were receiving tens of millions of views. Now reaching far beyond the streets of Melbourne, TASH SULTANA‘s passion for music has thoroughly engaged a global audience who are hungry for more. To date, TASH has earned praise from the New York Times, Billboard, NYLON, Pigeons & Planes and more, an NPR Tiny Desk concert, and a U.S. national TV debut on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”

TASH sold out every single date on her first ever U.S. tour before ever setting foot in the country, returning just a few months later for another completely sold-out tour. Since then, TASH has returned to the U.S. for additional headlining tours, selling out major theatres and arenas and showing no sign of slowing down.

TASH SULTANA continues to broaden her global audience and appeal through her incredible live performances including appearances at internationally renowned festivals such as Coachella, Governor’s Ball, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands, in addition to recent appearances at Shaky Knees, Bottlerock, and California Roots Music & Arts Festival.
