TASH SULTANA today (October 29) announced the official release date for their forthcoming sophomore album TERRA FIRMA. The highly anticipated new body of work from TASH SULTANA is set for release on February 19, 2021 on Mom + Pop Music and is available to pre-order NOW.

With a title inspired by the need to slow down and re-ground TERRA FIRMA is the work of a more confident, dynamic and experienced musician. The manifestation of a period of self-reflection in which TASH slowed down to find time for surfing, studio, family, gardening and a healthy balance from the hectic touring lifestyle that defined their existence.

“I didn’t realize that I needed to create a space and home for myself to feel like a person again,” explains TASH. “I just went inward and found a really peaceful place and wrote an album, and I feel really happy with it.”

Returning to earth after the dizzying heights of success, TERRA FIRMA is the sound of a more content and grounded TASH. Spiritually, the album finds the artist reconnecting to their roots, reminding themselves who they are and what it means to be human. Musically however, its 14 tracks take root into far-reaching sonic territory.

From the previously released evocative “Greed” to the enthralling “Beyond The Pine,” TASH departs from looped and layered jams towards meditative combinations of soul, funk, RnB, folk, rock, hip hop–you name it. “It’s Aretha Franklin meets Bon Iver meets John Mayer meets whatever,” says TASH. “It’s recognizably Tash Sultana, but deeper and more nuanced.”

Almost every note on TERRA FIRMA was once again composed, arranged, performed, engineered and produced by TASH. But to kick-start a new era, the solo star–for the first time–opened themselves up to collaborators, starting with a 10-day writing session with fellow ARIA-winning Australian musician Matt Corby and producer Dann Hume (Courtney Barnett, Amy Shark, Angus & Julia Stone).

Matt was very helpful for me at the beginning of this process, because I was experiencing writers block,” TASH explains. Together, they crafted lead singles “Pretty Lady”–an infectious tune kicking around since TASH’s busking days–and “Greed.” “They only give a shit when you make it big,TASH sings in a soul-funk examination of the corrupting influence of wealth and fame.

Corby also assisted on the richly detailed “Beyond The Pine,” in which TASH intones “I need you to save me because I can’t save myself,” and “Crop Circles,” a rumination on death disguised by its smoky, minimal piano licks and horns. “I went full jazz on that one.”

In line with today’s announcement, TASH has teamed up with fast rising Melbourne artist Jerome Farah to deliver a soul powered new single Willow Treefilled with thundering trumpets and shimmering guitar lines.

(L-R: Tash Sultana, Jerome Farah)

“There ain’t no fast pass up the mountain and you’ve got to clock the hours in to achieve the things you want in life,” explains TASH. “You can’t just skip the entire middle section of your journey to try and rush to the finish line. Whatever that may be for you. There is no use comparing yourself to someone else’s success. It’s your time when it’s meant to be and it’s only meant to be if you get up day and night and strive for the things you want. No one’s going to serve it to you on a golden platter, you’ve got to get it yourself.”

LISTEN TO ‘WILLOW TREE’ FEAT. JEROME FARAH HERE

TERRA FIRMA was made with a lot of effort but feels effortless. Its intoxicating grooves and hypnotic riffs are instantly inviting, but with depth that reveals its rewards the more you absorb it.

Forever thinking of future career steps, TASH has assembled a live band to bring the record to life on stage (whenever that’s safe to do so). “The new live show is everything the live show already was, plus three other people on the stage for a small section of the show,” TASH says. “And they’re already greasing the wheels to begin producing and mentoring other artists.

Keen to get back out on the road doing what they love, TASH has recently been announced as part of Great Southern Nights at The Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on Saturday 28 November.  For more information on this show, head HERE.

For TERRA FIRMA though, the goal seemed simple: to make music that comes from a place that’s real and from the heart. “Because if it does, you’ll never fuck up,” Tash reflects. “I just really wanted to like the art I was putting out… I just wanted to feel better, be better, perform better, play better, sing better. To be a better musician.”

To mark one of the biggest gaming title launches of the year, PlayStation®4 exclusive The Last of Us™ Part II, PlayStation Australia worked with multi-instrumentalist and global sensation acclaimed artist TASH SULTANA to re-record “Through The Valley”–the iconic track from the game’s reveal trailer that went viral in 2016. Due to overwhelming demand, the release of TASH‘s cover of “Through The Valley” is available now on Mom+Pop.

“This is the first time I’ve done a collab like this,” TASH says. “Usually, it’s kinda just like writing sessions with other musos but this is for a game and it’s different as it’s not my usual style to venture into so I’m completely honored to be asked to do something like this. The reaction has been amazing and it’s been great hearing all the positive messages from everyone so I wanted to make sure the song was available everywhere.”

The original track by U.S. blues and folk artist Shawn James is sung by lead character Ellie in The Last of Us™ Part II reveal trailer and tells a dark tale of struggle and someone who, by the grace of their own killer instinct, does not fear. The song is reminiscent of Ellie’s experience in a cruel post-pandemic world.
Patrick Lagana, Director of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment Australia, said, “‘Through The Valley’ became a #1 hit in several markets when featured in the 2016 reveal trailer for The Last of Us Part II, so we were super excited with the idea of recreating this with a phenomenal Aussie talent like TASH SULTANA that truly creates a special Australian moment to mark the launch of one of our biggest titles for PS4.”

Matt Holmes, Executive Creative Director at Poem, said, “We’re passionate about earning attention for brands by creating ideas that earn a place in people’s lives, ideas that people will actually care about. The TLOU world is incredibly immersive and fans are genuinely emotionally invested in the characters and the story. We wanted to tap into that feeling and the crazy excitement for this sequel by using music as it’s a powerful emotional trigger and several tracks and guitar chords have become synonymous with the game. I couldn’t be prouder of the result. TASH did an incredible job in the recording and the final launch video is a cool collision of cultures that The Last of Us™ fans and music fans are loving.”

TASH‘s shows continue to garner many critical accolades. Here are pull quotes from some recent shows:

Tash Sultana left the audience in awe…”

“Sultana is a frenetic and expressive performer on stage, clearly feeling every chord with their body as they play.”

“When looped, Sultana’s cascading licks crash into thunderous, electrifying waves.”
LAS VEGAS WEEKLY9/23/19

If a musician could ever be described as performing with every fiber of their being, Sultana would be itSultana’s voice was astounding, rising up to rafter-shattering cries, and recalling Billie Holiday’s soulful tone during the more intimate moments. There was beatboxing, and there was beatboxing in a pan flute.”
JOURNAL SENTINEL, (Milwaukee, WI), 9/11/19
To see Tash Sultana perform is to enter into a certain indescribable atmosphere.”
LIVE FOR LIVE MUSIC, (New York City, NY), 9/5/19
A straight-up guitar-goddess, Sultana tore through much of her set like Jimi Hendrix‘s spiritual offspring, always lost in the music and never anything less than elated to be making it. She made it very clear very quickly that her guitar was her partner up there, and their chemistry throughout the night was palpable bordering on overwhelming.”

About
TASH SULTANA:

TASH has been playing music since her grandfather gave her a guitar at just three years of age to using fake IDs throughout high school to play open mic nights and busking regularly on the streets of Melbourne. Stories of TASH‘s mesmerizing talent eventually began to spread and before long, her Facebook and YouTube videos were receiving tens of millions of views. Now reaching far beyond the streets of Melbourne, TASH SULTANA‘s passion for music has thoroughly engaged a global audience who are hungry for more. To date, TASH has earned praise from the New York Times, Billboard, NYLON, Pigeons & Planes and more, an NPR Tiny Desk concert, and a U.S. national TV debut on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”

TASH sold-out every single date on her first ever U.S. tour before ever setting foot in the country, returning just a few months later for another completely sold-out tour. Since then, TASH has returned to the U.S. for additional headlining tours, selling out major theatres and arenas and showing no sign of slowing down.

TASH SULTANA continues to broaden her global audience and appeal through her incredible live performances including appearances at internationally renowned festivals such as Coachella, Governor’s Ball, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands, in addition to recent appearances at Shaky Knees, Bottlerock, and California Roots Music & Arts Festival.

TASH SULTANA’S SOLD-OUT SHOW
THIS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
AT THE ICONIC RED ROCKS VENUE IN COLORADO
TO BE RECORDED AND FILMED FOR A FUTURE LIVE PROJECT

TASH SULTANA‘s sold-out show this coming Wednesday, September 25 at the iconic venue Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado is being recorded and filmed for a future live project. The day will be captured on film to give a behind-the-scenes look into themulti-instrumentalist and global sensation’s largest American headline show to date. Leading the film crew will be TASH‘s own touring videographer Dara Munnis.

“I feel like this is a closing ceremony for this chapter of my life which has been years in the making,” says TASH. “I’m happy to be able to document what we have achieved from a live perspective and show everyone the hard work that’s gone into these shows the past few years. It’s going to be a hell of night.”

The Red Rocks show is part of TASH’s buzzed-about fall 2019 tour that has included a recent stop at the Central Park Summerstage (New York), along with an upcoming slot on the Ohana Festival (Los Angeles). The newly announced tour dates mark the largest headlining gigs in TASH‘s career and come after a few spring shows in the U.S., followed by solo performances and festival appearances this summer in Europe.

Last year was one of the biggest years in TASH‘s career. Highlights include the release of her debut album FLOW STATE (Mom and Pop Music) which entered the charts at #4 on the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart and also charted across the globe. FLOW STATE was also nominated for the prestigious Triple J Australian Album of the Year award and six ARIA’s (The Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards). Other recent accolades include over half a billion streams worldwide; the certified platinum singles “Jungle” and “Notion”; the certified Gold (internationally) Notion (EP) and the singles “Mystik” and “Murder To The Mind”; and record-breaking attendance at live shows around the world.

For those who have not yet experienced TASH live, TASH recently revealed “The Story So Far,” a three-part documentary series in partnership with YouTube Music that shows the journey from bedroom performances and busking to sold-out world tours. Check out the first two episodes now on TASH‘s channel here and here, with a third to follow.

TASH‘s shows continue to garner many critical accolades. Here are pull quotes from some recent shows:

If a musician could ever be described as performing with every fiber of their being, Sultana would be it…It was a thrill watching Sultana stacking layers of sounds for the reggae-touched ‘Jungle or the exotic ‘Be the Smoke,’ creating walls of sound with drum machine snaps and bass rumbles, with synth swells and wavy guitar ripples. These bursts of looped audio would come and go at a whim, expand and compress, essentially acting as a base for Sultana to build new sounds on. Spry guitar lines would burst into blistering, Hendrix-style roars. Riffs would intoxicatingly slow down in mid-stride, like Sultana had just been hit with a tranquilizer dart. Jazz trumpet struts added a cool noir quality to the soundscapes, and mandolin sprints brought a fiery flair. Sultana’s voice was astounding, rising up to rafter-shattering cries, and recalling Billie Holiday’s soulful tone during the more intimate moments. There was beatboxing, and there was beatboxing in a pan flute.”
–Piet Levy,
JOURNAL SENTINEL, (Milwaukee, WI), 9/11/19
“The multi-talented 24-year-old performs alone (for the time being), utilizing loops and an array of drum pads alongside skillful playing on various guitars, horns, and keyboards. All that skilled musicianship is buoyed by Tash’s uniquely dream-like vocals which, depending on the song, can evoke comparisons to Macy GrayNorah JonesChristina Aguilera, and Chris Martin while still managing to sound wholly new and original. Tash’s songs themselves run the gamut of genres as well, boiling aspects of rock, trance, punk, funk, reggae and more into a uniquely entrancing musical brew…To see Tash Sultana perform is to enter into a certain indescribable atmosphere.”
–Andrew O’Brien,
LIVE FOR LIVE MUSIC, (New York City, NY), 9/5/19
“In support of her stellar 2018 debut, ‘Flow State’, Tash Sultana brought her unique live show to a packed house and delivered an hour-and-forty-five-minute set that never ceased to amaze.
–Timothy Patrick Boyer, THROUGH DIGITAL EYES, (Providence, RI), 9/4/19
Tash Sultana is a Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist who uses loop pedals with such deft dexterity it can often seem like witchcraft. Sultana can play 20 instruments-including guitar, bass, trumpet, flute, percussion and saxophone-and blends reggae rhythms, orchestral rock sounds, and mind-searing solos with a vocal timbre and delivery that is unmistakable for anyone else. Their latest LP Flow State took home the 2018 ARIA award for Blues and Roots Album and the Pop Award for Album of the Year.”
