World-famous French Nordic folk collective SKÁLD released their highly anticipated third album HULDUFÓLK in January via Decca Records France / Decca Records U.S. (UMG). The songs trantsspor listeners into the band’s mystical soundscape using traditional Old Norse instrumentation and language while sharing Scandinavian legends from poets and shamans of otherworldly beings, aka the “Huldufolk” (translated to “hidden people”), coexisting with humankind. Sharing supernatural and hauntingly cinematic music and lyric videos for previously released singles “Troll Kalla Mik” (“They Call Me Troll”), “Då Månen Sken” (“When The Moon Shone”) and their cover of the iconic Rammstein single “Du Hast,” the band have released a bewitching music video for the album’s latest single “Elverhøy” (“Elf”), streaming on Vevo now HERE.

Elverhøy” is about a young woman who meets two young elves who drag her into a hellish round and promise to give her the knowledge of runes,” shares SKÁLD’s mastermind Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet. “The music is a continuation of the text with its dancing form and is punctuated by nyckelharpa solos.

Plunging listeners into the myths and legends of Scandinavia, world-famous French Nordic folk collective SKÁLD pay homage to ancient Nordic poets (aka skalds) by singing in Old Norse and other Scandinavian languages (Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic and Faroese) along with using instrumentation dating back to the 14th century such as the nyckelharpa, Lyre, hurdy-gurdy, Moraharpa and Talharpa, underpinned with shamanic percussion to create their transfixing sound.

The collective today (December 16) share the second single, “Då Månen Sken,” from their forthcoming album HULDUFÓLK due January 20 via Decca Records France / DECCA RECORDS U.S. (UMG). “Då Månen Sken” translates to “When The Moon Shone” and tells the lore of the Swedish mythical femme-fatale Skogsrå, a forest nymph who lures men and binds their soul to the forest. The single is available now across all streaming platforms HERE and a visualizer video can be seen streaming below.

“‘Då Månen Sken’ is a ballad that tells the story of a skogsrå, a forest nymph, who bewitched the young Björn,” relays SKÁLD. “Björn was a tall, handsome boy on his way to a party one fall evening. On his way, he met this nymph who bewitched him. He will end up alone and melancholic, obsessed by the sound of the forest.”

Formed by producer/composer Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet in 2018, SKÁLD is a collective of over a dozen musicians who have restored the folklore and myths from poets, Vikings and shamans of ancient times and distant lands. HULDUFÓLK (“the hidden people”) honors an entire people in whom many Scandinavians still believe—elves, trolls, witches, fairies and otherworldly creature that live deep in the forests and in the heart of the mountains that discreetly coexist with humankind. The album’s debut single “Troll Kalla Mik” (“They Call Me Troll”), released on November 18, shared the lore of the “hidden people” with a mystifying music video that was voted PROG’s “Track of The Week” and has since garnered 372k views. Watch it here.

HULDUFÓLK’s cover artwork (seen below) is a tribute to Swedish painter and illustrator John Baur’s illustration “Princess Tuvstarr Gazing Down Into The Dark Waters Of The Forest Tarn.”  Baur is best known for his illustrations of early editions of Bland Tomtar Och Troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls), an anthology of Swedish folklore and fairy tales which are highlighted throughout HULDUFÓLK.

Pre-order HULDUFÓLK digitally and/or on CD, LP, including bundles with a protective troll amulet and leather cord, at https://bio.to/skald.

French Nordic folk collective SKÁLD will return January 20 via Decca Records France / DECCA RECORDS U.S. (UMG) with their third full-length album HULDUFÓLK which in English translates to “the hidden people.” The album shares the myths and legends of Scandinavian poets and shamans with tales of otherworldly beings coexisting with humankind. Sung entirely in Old Norse, the ancient language of Scandinavia, HULDUFÓLK transports listeners into an “elsewhere” made of fantasy, a land inhabited by weird and wonderful creatures, and mysteries with its poetic and epic soundscape.

HULDUFÓLK was composed and produced by the collective’s mastermind Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet and features over a dozen musicians and songwriters using traditional Nordic instrumentation such as the nyckelharpa, Moraharpa, Lyre, Talharpa and hurdy-gurdy alongside shamanic percussion and Nordic chants. Pre-order HULDUFÓLK now on CD, Vinyl and digital download at https://bio.to/skald.

SKÁLD have today (November 18) shared the first glimpse into the mysterious land of HULDUFÓLK with its debut single “Troll Kalla Mik” (“They Call Me Troll”). Its music video delves into the lore of the “Huldufolk” and one’s dangerous journey into their realm illustrating a dance of two powerful spirits, light and darkness. In Icelandic folklore, to cross the lands and forests of the hidden people is to risk losing one’s life and become trapped in a bewitching elven circle. If one does attempt to enter their realm, they become entranced and caught in a hellish loop of dance until they succumb to exhaustion, oblivion or death. The “Troll Kalla Mik” music video can be seen below or HERE. Stream “Troll Kalla Mik” across all digital platforms HERE.

“Troll Kalla Mik” (“They Call Me Troll”) Translated English Lyrics

They call me troll:
“dwelling-Hrungnir’s moon”,
“the giant’s wealth-sucker”,
“bale of the storm-sun”,
“the seeress’ delightful company”,
“guard of the corpse-fjord”,
“swallower of the heavenly wheel”.
What’s a troll, but this?
Ho Ho Hoo…
x2

They call me “Skáld”:
“smith of Viðurr’s ship”,
“finder of Gautr’s gift”,
“unscanty man”,
“bearer of Yggr’s beer”,
x2

“Móði’s creator in poetry”,
“skilled smith of verses”.

What’s a skald, but this? x2

What’s a troll, but this?

They call me troll:
“dwelling-Hrungnir’s moon”,
“the giant’s wealth-sucker”,
“bale of the storm-sun”,
“the seeress’ delightful company”,
“guard of the corpse-fjord”,
“swallower of the heavenly wheel”.

What’s a troll, but this?

They blended honey and blood together
And created that kind of mead which
Makes everyone who drinks it a poet and a wise man.
