“We’re hanging out with the worst of them,
we make the bad look good.
After parties where you can’t invite your friends,
yea, this is Hollywood.”

Blazing rock trio THE BLACK MOODS warm up listeners with another new track, “Hollywood,” taken from their upcoming June 3 album INTO THE NIGHT via Wit Hustle/The Orchard/Steelhorse Entertainment. Streaming now across all digital platforms, “Hollywood” unflinchingly looks at the dark side beneath the glitz and glamour of the star-studded entertainment capital. Listen here: https://orcd.co/tbmhollywood.

For INTO THE NIGHT, the Phoenix, AZ band–Josh Kennedy (vocals, guitar), Chico Diaz (drums) and Jordan Hoffman (bass)–reenlisted Grammy Award-nominated producer Johnny “K” Karkazis (3 Doors Down, Disturbed), who also worked with the trio on their critically acclaimed 2020 sophomore effort SUNSHINE, which produced the Top 20 rock track “Sunshine.” Unable to tour when the pandemic hit, the band packed up their studio and headed East to the Ozarks and set up a makeshift studio in their label owner’s home. At first, our plan was to record some songs in his basement,” shares Kennedy. “…but we wound up taking over the entire house from June to October (2020).”

Recording a full album inside a private residence required the band to get creative–drums were tracked in the wide-open living room, guitar amps were placed inside the walk-in closets and so on. THE BLACK MOODS spent the summer immersed in the most dynamic and diverse project of their career, mixing hard-hitting rock & roll with electric blues, punky attitude, and plenty of anthemic choruses. For Kennedy, who’d grown up just a short drive away, he’d come full circle returning to the Ozarks, the place where he’d first fallen in love with music. Citing influence from the classic sounds of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Creedence Clearwater Revival and even ’90s mainstays like Counting Crowes and Better Than Ezra, INTO THE NIGHT marked another chance to blend his influences from the past into a sound for the present.

INTO THE NIGHT’s 12 tracks were every bit as inspired as the recording sessions that produced them. “Saturday Night” paid tribute to the wild, celebratory thrill of the weekend, which the band portrayed in the rousing music video seen HERE, while “She Gets Out” (released November 2021) showcased a softer side of the band, with jangling acoustic guitars and tight vocal harmonies giving way to a singalong refrain. INTO THE NIGHT is an album that’s felt as much as heard, rooted in the stomp of drummer Chico Diaz‘s kick drum, the pulse of Jordan Hoffman‘s bass, and the larger-than-life presence of Josh Kennedy.

An icon of American music since the early 1970s, TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT of The Eagles has spent the past half-century in a creative whirl, blurring the lines between rock & roll, blue-eyed soul, California country, and folk. Leading up to the May 6 release of his seventh solo album DAY BY DAY, the singer, songwriter and bassist has shared its second single, “Heartbeat,” along with a lyric video. Watch the video here and listen to the song here.

“Heartbeat” is built on a subtle R&B groove reminiscent of the Eagles rhythmic classic “I Can’t Tell You Why” that TIMOTHY sang and co-wrote with Don Henley and Glenn Frey. In the song, he candidly gets inside what makes long-term relationships work: devotion, commitment and respect, plus the shared understanding that the two people also exist as individuals: “…you don’t own me/And I don’t own you/All we do is love one another/Two lucky people/Who know how to work things through.”

“Heartbeat” follows the March 18 release of the Simple Man single and video, which was praised by Rock And Blues Muse: “One word about ‘Simple Man’ by Timothy B. Schmit–gorgeous” (3/18/22).

DAY BY DAY highlights his enduring appetite for new sounds and timeless melodies. He recorded the album’s 12 songs during breaks in the Eagles’ busy schedule, utilizing his home studio known as Mooselodge–nestled into a rural pocket of Los Angeles County, with the Santa Monica Mountains looming outside–to capture a sound that’s as eclectic as its creator. On DAY BY DAY, his third consecutive self-penned album, guests like Jackson Browne, Lindsey Buckingham, John Fogerty, Benmont Tench, Jim Keltner, John McFee and Kenny Wayne Sheppard all make appearances, as well as many other fine musicians and singers.

As noted by Ultimate Classic Rock, the album “…ranges from the rich harmonics of ‘Simple Man’ to the rocking ‘Mr. X.’ Elsewhere, the Band-like Americana of ‘Grinding Stone,’ the Caribbean flavor of ‘I Come Alive and the rich orchestrations of ‘Taste Like Candy” boast further sonic ventures” (3/18/22).

The DAY BY DAY track listing is as follows:

SIMPLE MAN
THE NEXT RAINBOW
HEARTBEAT
MR.X
QUESTION OF THE HEART
SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW
I COME ALIVE
FEATHER IN THE WIND
GRINDING STONE
TASTE LIKE CANDY
CONFLICTED
WHERE WE BELONG

Freewheeling New York rock band THE SWEET THINGS today (April 11) roll out “Brown Leather,” their potent new single and action-packed video. The song is the title track of the band’s second album due June 3 via Wendigo Productions NYC/Spaghetty Town Records, an 11-song disc that’s rife with a sweet mix twangin’ bangin’ country blues, bluesy country and Southern rock and roll. The “Brown Leather” video was filmed by award-winning director Video Rahim (Mastodon, Blackberry Smoke) and shot at the Boot Bar in Manhattan, with exterior scenes filmed shot at Chips Bar and Grill in Winder, GA. Read a Q&A with the band on the making of the video and what “Brown Leather” really means below.

The Sweet Things - Brown Leather (Official Music Video)

BROWN LEATHER tells timeless tales that sound familiar yet fresh at the same time. The album was recorded with producer Matt Chiaravalle at the iconic FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL (The Beatles, Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynryd) with finishing touches added in NYC’s Flux Studios and Mercy Sound.

The band’s debut album IN BORROWED SHOES, ON BORROWED TIME was released in 2019. Faster and Louder praised the record stating “In Borrowed Shoes is The Sweet Things’ Exile On Main St. It runs the stylistic gamut from trashy rock n’ roll to blues to country to soulful ballads” while Sleaze Roxx compared it to if the “1972 Stones were exiled in the New York City’s East Village instead of the south of France.”

THE SWEET THINGS “BROWN LEATHER” Q&A
with DAVE TIERNEY

–Where was the video shot?

DAVE TIERNEY: “Most of the video was shot at the Boot Bar in Manhattan, but the exteriors were shot at Chips Bar and Grill in Winder, GA.”

–Who directed it?

DAVE TIERNEY: “The video was directed by Video Rahim from Atlanta. We’ve been huge fans of his work for years, so once we came up with the concept and started discussing options to direct, he was the obvious first choice. We reached out to him with the song and the basic idea and he was super into it, so we just hit the ground running from there.”

–Who came up with the concept for the video and what are your thoughts about it?

DAVE TIERNEY: “Sam, my girlfriend Scarlett (she plays the orange haired skater in the video), and I were sitting around one night talking about what the video for
this song should look like. ‘I’m seeing roller skates and butts,’ Scarlett said. We
bullshitted the idea around for a couple hours and filled in all the blanks until the
concept had materialized. The Brown Leather Roller Disco Bar in the video is basically
the kind of place we would want to play or hang out at, but since it didn’t exist in the real
world (that we know of), we had to create it. Hopefully nature takes its course now, and
some of that life imitates art shit happens so that a place like this will open that we can
actually hang out at and play.”

–Can you talk about your general excitement about the video and how it captures the essence of The Sweet Things and the band’s new chapter with the upcoming album.

DAVE TIERNEY: “We love the video. It’s fun to watch it now after months of it just being an idea we had dreamed up. We had a lot of shows cancelled in the Spring/Summer of 2019 (as did just about everyone), and now we’re finally relaunching ourselves as a full live band getting back on the road. It seems appropriate to kick it all off with a video centered around a live performance like this one. This video is very optimistic, it’s the world in which we want to live. Hopefully, we play lots of shows where brawls break out if anyone dares to show up not wearing roller skates.”

–The video has a strong feminist vibe. Can you talk about that?

DAVE TIERNEY: “The skaters are definitely the stars of this video, and they did an amazing job. From the beginning, we were trying to create a world inhabited by these women who were cool badass motherfuckers. Scarlett skates for the Bronx Gridlock in the Gotham Roller Derby league, and we hang out in that world a lot. We’re huge fans of what they do, so once the idea of a country and western roller disco video started to come together, asking other skaters from Gotham to be a part of it was a no-brainer. About ¾ of the skaters in the video are from the league. Within the context of the video, this is definitely their bar and we’re just playing at it. We’re very pleased that these characters we dreamed up are Sweet Things fans and asked us to play their bar.”

–With all the action taking place in the video, did anything particularly wild + crazy happen on the video set?

DAVE TIERNEY: “We had a lot of fight choreography planned out for the skaters and taught it to them before filming those scenes, but once the cameras started rolling, we realized that it was completely unnecessary. Each time Rahim called ‘action,’ every skater just went 100% nuts throwing themselves and each other all around the place. It was amazing to watch and slightly hard to stay in character while the whole room was going crazy. Stephen, who plays one of the line dancers, was talking after the shoot about how hard some of the skaters were going when the show turns violent, and he remarked that a lot of the pulled punches he got hit with weren’t really pulled. There’s a moment captured in the video when Danger (another Gotham skater) is punching Stephen repeatedly in the ribs and this appears to be some of those punches he was referring to. He may never dance again.”

–Focusing on the song itself, what inspired the lyrics?

DAVE TIERNEY: “In our world someone saying, ‘that’s very brown leather’ is sort of similar to saying, ‘that’s not very punk rock.’ It’s meant derisively in a way intended to criticize someone’s taste and even their cred a bit. It’s lighthearted, but also intended as a dig. The song ‘Brown Leather’ is basically us saying we don’t give a fuck what other people think, we’re just gonna do what we like and what we think is cool. The video itself is just an extension of that attitude, since we’re singing about doing what we like, we’re gonna make a video of what we’d like to see…we think other people will like it too.”

OF THE EP’S THREE CLIPS

Aldo Nova-The Life and Time of Eddie Gage-10 song EP-out tomorrow 04/01/22///3-min trailer

Thumb through your record collection, Spotify library, or YouTube search history and, chances are, you’ve listened to ALDO NOVA at some point.

The GRAMMY® Award-winning phenomenon and singer, songwriter and guitarist has not only penned various definitive rock anthems from his multi-platinum solo anthems such as “Fantasy,” “Monkey On Your Back” and many more but his touch can be felt on dozens of influential records from Céline Dion, Jon Bon Jovi, Faith Hill, and many more.

Tomorrow (April 1), ALDO unleashes the epic THE LIFE AND TIMES OF EDDIE GAGE 10-song EP. Get it here. Today (March 31), he has rolled out a video recap of the EP’s three clips for “Burn Like The Sun,” “Free Your Mind, and “King Of Deceit. Watch the trailer here.

This 10-track preview EP with songs taken from his 25-song, two hours plus-long rock opera THE LIFE AND TIMES OF EDDIE GAGE proves equally relevant in terms of rock’s past, present, and future. ALDO tells a story like never before about Eddie Gage, a young musical prodigy that becomes the ultimate Rockstar but then gets drawn into the sordid reality of the darker side of the music industry where he then falls, and with faith and hope, is reborn. This is not your average story though, since it is also based in theology, and mysticism, where names must be decoded, and lyrics read to discover the true characters hidden in the story. Eddie Gage essentially doubles as the musician’s own avatar through all those years recording music under major label shackles to this point in his career where he releases this EP of all new material on the 40th anniversary of the release of his multi-platinum top ten eponymous first album. all the songs were written, performed, produced, engineered and mixed by ALDO.

ALDO sets the stage for the EP with the singles “King Of Deceit, “Burn Like The Sun,” “Free Your Mind, and “Hey Ladi Dadi, generating streams in the hundreds of thousands already and earning early acclaim including praise from Goldmine Magazine (3/22/22): “It’s a magnificent return and a reflection of how broad and striking his musical talents have always been.” Elsewhere, Sonic Perspectives (2-16-22) raved: “Its ten tracks are a group of diverse, high-energy rockers packed with Aldo‘s thunderous guitar work, soaring vocals, and heartfelt lyrics.”

With THE LIFE AND TIMES OF EDDIE GAGE EP, ALDO is delivering an expansive vision as the culmination of his incredible journey thus far, and it only hints at more to come. This prolific presence has quietly helped shaped the sound of rock and popular music since the onset of his career. He’s bringing a dream vision to life in 2022.

Allow ALDO to introduce you to Eddie Gage now…

Mississippi and Louisiana-rooted female country trio CHAPEL HARTDanica Hart, Devynn Hart and cousin Trea Swindle—announces the premiere of their new video “Made For Me” today (March 30) at CMT.com. Watch the video here. The video is also premiering today on CMT Music (24/7 music video channel) with airtimes beginning at 6:40 a.m. E.T. and following throughout the day. CMT Music is in over 21 million homes.

Made For Me,” written by all three members of CHAPEL HART, is a story about the past, the present and going forward with a united feeling of love, redemption and healing. Noted for their sweet and Southern sound of country and soulful undertones with gospel roots, they wrote the song about the place, Poplarville, MS (population 2,845), where all three were raised and sang together throughout their youth at Hart’s Chapel. They’ve since become a world-class recording and performing group who’ve released two albums and entertained fans around the world.

This heartfelt “full-circle” story can only be told by these 2021 inductees into CMT’s Next Women of Country, the institution that has been known to shine a light on up and coming female country artists such as Kelsea Ballerini, Ashley McBride and Gabby Barrett.

CHAPEL HART recently traveled back to Poplarville to film the video for the joyous “Made For Me.” It’s a song about having big dreams in a small town. It’s also about growing up in Poplarville (which incidentally was home to musician/artist Jimmy Buffett during his college years at Pearl River College) and leaving the past and the town’s history behind (both good and bad) in search of those dreams.

Prior to shooting the video,” says Danica Hart, “we put on our very first concert ‘Home Is Where the Hart Is’ in our hometown of Poplarville, and the energy was right! We felt it only made sense to go ahead and shoot the video. We had support from the entire city. The song and video ‘Made For Me’ is about growing up in Poplarville and then eventually leaving to follow our dreams of being singers in the city of New Orleans. So it just seemed super fitting for us to shoot the video in Poplarville and New Orleans.”

You can feel the emotion of CHAPEL HART going home to Poplarville in the video. The girls were also presented with a “Key To The City” by the Mayor and the City Alderman, and a brief clip of that event is included in the video. Mayor Louise Smith shared, “We presented them with the Key To the City to honor their actions and contributions to our citizens. They came home to celebrate their success with us. Like other people throughout our nation, we needed some sunshine after COVID and the devastation it wreaked on us. They used the unifying power of their beautiful, creative music to help us express our innermost feelings and emotions.” City Alderman Anne Gendusa Smith added, “These extraordinarily talented musical artists & women of integrity are excellent representatives of our city. Their music is healing and uniting to all kinds of people and their energy is so positive. Chapel Hart’s music is about love and unity. It’s what the world needs to follow.”

This Mississippi trio’s music has reached fans around the globe earning them the title of “International Group of the Year” as well as “International Song of the Year” for the single “You Can Have Him Jolene” in Scotland. They were also nominated in multiple categories by the British CMAs including “Group of the Year” and “Album of the Year” for their sophomore release The Girls Are Back In Town.

CHAPEL HART has a natural ability to make people join together in song and dance and in their live performances. They often note music’s incredible power to unite people of all nationalities, religions, and walks of life. Danica states, Things are definitely different back home now. Hey, it’s amazing because things are really starting to change there and we are seeing coffee shops, new business, upgrades being done to the city! It makes us hopeful that the next generation won’t have to be bored to death (lol). Now more than ever, we are happy to say, ‘Home is where the Hart is.’”

THE NOCTURNAL AFFAIR Q&A
with BRENDAN SHANE

• What’s the inspiration behind (META)MORPHOSIS and how did its name come about?

BRENDAN SHANE: “The idea for ‘(Meta)morphosis’ came to mind as I was healing from the loss of a close family member and going through a significant heartbreak. My previous material was dark and broody and was weighing me down before the band had even got off the ground. As I began to work on healing myself, my writing developed and allowed me to grow and expand as an artist. The entire album process morphed my perspective on life, love and the music industry. I’ve been working hard every day to continue to strive to be better and constantly morphing and evolving. I believe Bear Grylls famously once said, ‘Improvise, adapt, overcome,’ so that’s the advice I’ve followed.

• The definition of ‘metamorphosis’ is a change of physical form, structure or substance. If you had the ability of metamorphosis, what would you change to and why?

SHANE: “I love moths and I absolutely love bees. Both go through a complete metamorphosis. Though bees are known pollinators a lot of people don’t know the value moths bring to the ecosystem. They’re responsible for many things but one of which is pollinating plants at night while other insects can’t. I absolutely love nocturnal bugs and animals. Surprise, surprise!”

• (META)MORPHOSIS was produced by John Moyer (Disturbed) and mixed/mastered with Logan Mader.    How did you get connected to both of them and what was your favorite part about working with them on this album?

SHANE: “I’ve known John Moyer for over a decade. We first met when he produces a previous metal project of mine and we’ve been friends ever since. Aside from being a killer bass player, he’s an insane producer and songwriter and has always brought the absolute best out of me. Every time I think I’ve got his production style figured out he does a complete 180 and blows my mind. I had shared the project when it was in its early stages, and he was so supportive from the start. As it evolved, I sent over some demos of the newer sound and he said, ‘let’s get you into the studio.’ My immediate reply was to get Logan Mader involved.”

“I was originally connected with Logan (I bet he won’t remember this) long ago when I had met the original Bass player of Five Finger Death Punch. I was 18 or 19 then. I loved Roadrunner’s ‘All Star Sessions’ CD/DVD and in it saw Logan behind a mixing board and looked up his credentials and was shocked. I was then determined to work with him. John reached out to him to get involved with Nocturnal after we started recording and the rest is history.”

“I knew they John and Logan had worked on stuff together in the past, but I had no idea how great this team would be. Getting them both in a room with me is the perfect checks and balances of production and songwriting. We can almost read each other’s minds at some points.”

• Your tour with Fozzy starts later this week and its your first time being on the road since Covid performing. What are you most looking forward to about being on tour?

SHANE: “Everything. The road. The new friends I’ll make. The quick trip hot dogs. Haha, I’m made to travel. I’m made to perform. This is a dream come true.”

• If you had to choose one band from the past to tour with, who would it be & why?

SHANE: “Prince. I’m a workhorse when it comes to music. I write and record demos every day. Even if it’s just a riff or a chorus or a vocal melody. I know he did the same. I’d love to have learned the tips and tricks of his recording and performing process.”

“Its ten tracks are a group of diverse, high-energy rockers packed with Aldo‘s thunderous guitar work, soaring vocals, and heartfelt lyrics.”
SONIC PERSPECTIVES (2-16-22)

Multi-platinum GRAMMY® Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist ALDO NOVA has today (March 22) released a new performance video for “The King Of Deceit.” It’s the latest single from his forthcoming larger-than-life rock opera THE LIFE AND TIMES OF EDDIE GAGE, which is out next week (April 1) Watch the video here and listen to the single here.

The songs on the 10-song EP mark the first chapter of the opera. For the recording of the “The King Of Deceit,” ALDO enlisted a 40-piece orchestra to flesh out the track. In the video, the multi-platinum Grammy® award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist is cast as “The King Of Deceit.”

Says ALDO: “‘The King Of Deceit’ is a pivotal character in the story of Eddie Gage. He is the antagonist, or the villain, and although there are many villains in Eddie’s life–they’re all under the thumb of M. F. Stophalis, ‘The King Of Deceit.’”

“As Eddie is good and is light, ‘The King Of Deceit’ represents darkness and evil,” ALDO elaborates. “Even though the physical side of Eddie’s life is slightly based on mine, the rock opera really has its roots in religion and theology, and all the names of the characters must be decoded so that it all makes sense. Everything–the whole story–the characters and their actions are in the lyrics, and the lyrics are set to music that represent them. Eddie’s not just a rockstar but a messenger, who, through his music, convey a message of faith and hope, and make them believe in themselves, and ‘The King Of Deceit’ will do anything to stop this. I chose to do a theatrical video, in makeup and costume, because I wanted to bring the character to life. to paint a picture of what evil looks like, at least in Eddie’s eyes.”

As ALDO explained in a feature with Misplaced Straws: “I wanted to make an album like when I was a kid when you used to have the LP and you open it up and I knew every credit and everybody…No one writes liner notes, so I figured since my whole album is like, I took all my influences from the past and then I brought them into the future, but I wanted to keep past so I made liner notes, they’re so detailed. Even every little piece of gear that we used on the album.”

In addition, look for the iconic Montreal maverick to subsequently release the triple disc ALDO NOVA 2.0 RELOADED on April 19. It will feature 2.0 versions of nine classic songs from ALDO’s catalog, plus another disc with no lead vocal track and a third disc with no lead guitar track so fans can either sing along or play along with him. “Aldo Nova 2.0 Reloaded has Aldo‘s biggest hits reworked to sound sonically more powerful and supercharged,” noted SONIC PERSPECTIVES. “They deliver the punch they truly deserved yet keep the integrity of the original versions…packed with songs that deliver attitude in spades and pummels the listener with hook after hook with vocals that jump off the album.” Read more about THE LIFE AND TIMES OF EDDIE GAGE and ALDO NOVA 2.0 RELOADED here.

“I’m no sinner man, though I make mistakes
Weaving in and out of touch and doing what it takes
To be lucid, warm, and happy whenever I can
It’s no promise, but it’s my loose plan”
–TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT, “Simple Man”

TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT of The Eagles today (March 18) announced the release of his upcoming solo album DAY BY DAY–out May 6–by sharing its first single and video, “Simple Man.” Watch the video here and listen here.

Premiered yesterday on Jim Ladd’s show on SiriusXM, “Simple Man” is the album’s gorgeous opener, featuring TIMOTHY’s trademark warm, intimate vocals; it’s also layered with electric guitar leads from Lindsey Buckingham and vocal harmonies from Beach Boys alumni Chris Farmer and Matt Jardine. The song nods to the singer, songwriter and bassist’s California roots, summoning up the glory days of the Laurel Canyon folk scene.

The “Simple Man” video was directed by Ava Warbrick, who says, “I wanted to create a contemplative mood. Like a meditation. Slow panning shots in a rotating motion to illustrate the passing of time. The three Timothy’s are evocative of the harmonized vocals. We shot the music video on 16mm Kodak film to give room and texture to the California landscape and to elicit a nostalgia. A slow burn for reflection. The video, shot in and around Timothy’s music studio, to me feels like an authentic document of the space and this moment in time.”

DAY BY DAY, TIMOTHY’s seventh solo album and first since 2016’s Leap of Faith, highlights his enduring appetite for new sounds and timeless melodies.

“I still think of myself as a developing songwriter,” he admits. “When Jackson [Browne] came to the studio, we talked about how he wrote ‘These Days’ when he was 16 years old. It’s so impressive that a teenager could create something so insightful. That didn’t happen to me. I didn’t hit my stride as a songwriter during my younger years. I think I’m finally starting to get there now, and I’m in my 70s! It’s really nice. It makes me anxious to move forward and continue making music.”

Making DAY BY DAY at home allowed SCHMIT to take stock of the world around him. The wide stretch of state-protected land that surrounds his studio—including an old millstone hidden in a nearby meadow, left behind by the Chumash people—inspired the song “Grinding Stone,” the chorus for which features the vocal blend of SCHMIT, Jackson Browne and John Fogerty. Elsewhere, the challenges of the Covid-19 era compelled him to turn “The Next Rainbow” into an anthem about seizing the day and counting one’s blessings. He also found a muse in his wife, as well as an indispensable harmony partner in his daughter, Jeddrah. Pulling triple-duty as the album’s singer/songwriter, co-producer (with Jeff Peters), and multi-instrumentalist, SCHMIT created DAY BY DAY without having to leave the environment that inspired much of the album’s material.

Other album highlights include “Mr. X,” rooted in amplified rock & roll, driven forward by electric guitar and a rapid-fire vocal, while “Feather in the Wind” evokes the sunny pop of the Beach Boys. The rest of DAY BY DAY is similarly diverse, from the R&B restraint of “Heartbeat” to the reggae rhythms of “I Come Alive.”

“I try to latch on to whatever’s floating my way through the ethers,” says TIMOTHY of his songwriting process. “I just want to make good music and put a smile on people’s faces. I love the process and feel extremely lucky to be able to make new music as an older guy, and this is very satisfying.”

The DAY BY DAY track listing is as follows:

SIMPLE MAN
THE NEXT RAINBOW
HEARTBEAT
MR.X
QUESTION OF THE HEART
SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW
I COME ALIVE
FEATHER IN THE WIND
GRINDING STONE
TASTE LIKE CANDY
CONFLICTED
WHERE WE BELONG

“OAK TREE” IS THE THIRD SINGLE FROM
‘COLOURS,’ THEIR
CURRENT SIX-SONG EP

Portland, Maine-based indie trio LOVE BY NUMB3RS–co-vocalists DAN CONNOR and ANNA LOMBARD and multi-instrumentalist JON ROODS–today (March 18) have unveiled the haunting and imagery-rich video for “Oak Tree.” It’s the third single and video from the acclaimed group’s six-song EP COLOURS that was released last November. The exterior and interior scenes for the band’s self-directed video were shot at their house/studio in Maine known as South Ranch. Watch the video here.

The “Oak Tree” video was premiered yesterday (March 17) by Americana U.K whose Andrew Frolish said, “Both the song and video are genuinely atmospheric, with the rich imagery of the video mirroring the song’s expansive sound and beautifully poetic lyrics.  Anna Lombard’s vocal is elegant and haunting, delivering incredibly evocative and rich descriptive language set to a gorgeously-building melody. Lombard is joined by guitarist and singer Dan Connor, whose voice complements Lombard’s perfectly, adding depth and texture.  Multi-instrumentalist Jon Roods rounds out the trio, contributing an astonishing array of instruments, including Moog synth, Hammond organ, percussion and exquisite pedal steel, all of which create dreamy sonic layers that transport us into the the heart of a relationship and a deep, immersive, all-encompassing love.”

“Oak Tree” possesses an evocative spacious sound with pedal steel and Moog synth that underlines the band’s mix of eloquent alternative, Americana and roots rock. Written by Lombard, Roods and Connor, the song is a highlight of their acclaimed current six-song EP COLOURS, produced by Roods and Lombard. The EP will be followed by a full-length album (their second) later this year.

Inspired by the book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, “Oak Tree” is a moving and haunting song about love and devotion, with Lombard gorgeously wrapping her voice around standout lyrics like: “And just like the roots of this tree/I’ll never let you down/As long as my eyes can see/I’m gathering all your leaves/And weaving them into my crown.”

QUOTES ABOUT “OAK TREE”

Can you tell us what inspired “Oak Tree” and its themes of love and devotion?

ANNA LOMBARD: The writing process for this song began with an idea from Dan–some working/placeholder lyrics and a rough sketch of an arrangement. I began thinking about how it’s been 16 years since I first met Dan. I was freshly 21 and we were introduced at a bar by a mutual friend who told him I sang. We sat down with a guitar that night and he taught me one of his songs he had been working on (as well as an entire solo record) and when I started singing, he somewhat jokingly re-tells it as he knew he immediately needed to trash everything he had already recorded and make a record with me. When the words for “Oak Tree” came to fruition, I had been thinking about how much I have learned from Dan as a writer over the last decade and a half. He really encouraged me to spend these years (pre-LBN) to study the art of songwriting…arrangement, things like inversions of chords to make them more interesting, lyrics, etc. He gave me so much of his time and focus because he really wanted me to “get there” as a writer. I would get so frustrated in my early twenties because even though I grew up writing poetry, I hadn’t found my ability to write songs. I specifically remember expressing that to him and his response was, “Look, just trust me. When you get there (as a writer), you’ll know.”

This very relationship between him guiding me to get to where I am (I think?) now, reminded me of the book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Say what you want about that book and whether or not it encouraged selfishness or negatively portrayed how friendship works to children…I never thought of it that way. To me, it symbolized the tree loving this boy so much, that it literally gave him anything he ever needed. I love that. To me, it’s what you do when you love someone. You do anything for them, no matter what. And, sometimes, to the point of it being self-sacrificial.

One morning, I thought we should use this idea in The Giving Tree for this new song. I popped over at Dan’s later that same day and walked into the kitchen and the damn book was just out on his kitchen table. I was like, “ok this is too weird.”

The third line in that book says:

“And everyday the boy would come and he would gather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the forest.”

So, the chorus was meant to kind of pay homage to the book as with hopes of people reading that line and putting 2+2 together.

So it’s about giving your all for love. Selflessness. Sacrifice. Friendship. And learning things about the world through the eyes of the people with whom you are close. “I’ll never let you down” was my way of promising Dan that I’ll take everything he’s taught/given of himself to me and never stop writing or playing music, no matter what. That’s my promise.

And we wanted the chorus to be big, coming in after a kind of a slow, haunting verse…kind of like the way this feeling hits when the chorus comes in on Pink Floyd’s track “Us & Them”–we wanted it to be a bit more musically heavy…and impactful.

–For the song’s video, which possesses the wondrous abstract imagery that has come to define the band’s videos, let us know what the band’s creative intentions were? And who directed the video?

LOMBARD: All of our videos are self-directed. Jon had this idea of using the childhood doll house my father built me as the “fort with four walls”–then he built a set in the garage to mimic the inside of the dollhouse for us to film ourselves in–and then juxtapose that with the miniature inside of the dollhouse for this kind of trippy perspective change. Then, he built a 10 x 3 foot bed, dumped soil in it, and told me to get in it. So my hair was meant to look like roots of the tree. And we put little dollhouse-sized furniture, instruments, pencils in it for another perspective-bending idea. We wanted it to look a little psychedelic to match how we made the song feel/sound. We always just want our videos to tell the story of the song and be visually stimulating and at times…just weird. It was filmed mostly in our garage, backyard and our basement aside from some of the nature shots.

–Were there any challenges in shooting the video?

LOMBARD: The night Jon climbed 16 feet up a tree and secured the dollhouse on a little platform for some drone footage was absurd. I mean, It was 6 degrees outside and we are out in our backyard at 2 am with work lamps and a drone flying around my old dollhouse. Those are the moments I pray our neighbors are fast asleep.

–What do you feel the song + video say about the band’s heart and soul?

LOMBARD: We just love what we do and we really love each other like family. It’s a lot of work but we love it. It’s why we get out of bed in the morning, you know? I think this song and video kind of speaks to our focus on being good to, and caring for, one another. That’s LBN.

“Oak Tree” Lyrics
(Lombard, Roods, Connor)
Climb up that old oak tree
Build me a fort with four walls
A hammer, a handful of nails
Boards that were thrown away
Carve both our names in the bark
Take only what we may need
A pencil and paper to start
Look up at the birds as they sing
If only these walls could speak
Oh what a tale they would tell
And just like the roots of this tree
I’ll never let you down
So long as my eyes can see
I’m gathering all of your leaves
And I’m weaving them into a crown
All of my words for a song
Lanterns a-glow in the dark
I laid in a blanket of bones
It’s the chamber that’s holding my heart
And when the seasons change
Burn like a flame up in the sky
Hope you lean into me for some shade
We’ll make up for all our lost time
If only these walls could speak
Oh what a tale they would tell
And just like the roots of this tree
I’ll never let you down
As long as my eyes can see
I’m gathering all your leaves
And weaving them into my crown
If only these walls could speak
Oh what a tale they would tell
And just like the roots of this tree
I’ll never let you down
As long as my eyes can see
I’ll take all that you gave to me
That’s a promise

Hard rockers UNCURED today (March 18) have released the heavy-hitting anthem “Set The World Ablaze.” It’s taken from their third full-length album LIVING LIKE I’M DEAD and available for streaming today across all digital platforms. “Set The World Ablaze” was written on the road during the band’s previous South American tour with Lacuna Coil and influenced by fan reaction as they played it from the stage each night. Co-vocalist/guitarists and brothers Rex and Zak Cox share the story below.

“We wrote ‘Set the World Ablaze’ while touring South America as direct support to Lacuna Coil in early 2019,” shares Zak. “It is a story of how perseverance leads to success, particularly for touring musicians. We performed it live several times before recording, leading to the ‘sway’ section which captures the reaction of Brazilian fans when they heard it from the stage.” Rex adds, “It’s an entirely organic composition, reflecting real-time changes that came from writing and playing it simultaneously in front of an international audience.”

UNCURED’s debut album MEDUSA (2017) was named as one of AXS’ “10 Best Metal Albums of 2017.” The band released a second album in 2019, EPIDEMIC, which MetalSucks lauded for its “signature groovy riffs and hook-fuel solos” and Guitar World praised as “technically dazzling.” The band also shared a cover of Slayer’s 2001 classic hit “Disciple” which was named 2019’s ‘Cover of The Year’ by Sirius XM Liquid Metal.
