Chris Isaak at the Wynn’s Encore Theatre

Checked into the “Blue Hotel” last night with Chris Isaak for the first of his two weekend shows at the Wynn’s Encore Theatre as part of his Holiday 2021 Tour. The “San Francisco Days” singer + songwriter remains suave + romantically tortured, not unlike Bryan Ferry, and can still reel you in with his rich, deep voice, and haunting  “Wicked Game” and “Somebody’s Crying” falsetto.  An adoring audience cheered Isaak’s gems + smart holiday-themed covers like Elvis’ “Blue Christmas” and Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper.” A masterful performer with his longtime dexterous band, Isaak kept the fun going with excellent covers of Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman” and James Brown’s “I’ll Go Crazy,” plus his priceless comedic stage patter. And couldn’t take my eyes off his sparkling + embroidered black suit that he designed. ?

Volcanic Double Bill at Backstage Bar & Billiards in Downtown Las Vegas: Trail of Dead + Valley Girls

Still buzzed from this week’s volcanic Trail of Dead/Death Valley Girls show at Backstage Bar & Billiards, the terrific venue in downtown Vegas which is connected to the larger Fremont Country Club. Been following the psych rock of So Cal’s Death Valley Girls ever since hearing their 2018 Stooges-inspired song “Disaster (Is What We’re After),” the video for which stars Iggy Pop. Fronted by charismatic vocalist and guitarist/keyboardist Bonnie Bloomgarden, DVG are three gals + one guy—they’re both menacing + playful onstage, a combo that definitely works. Also really dug the long-running …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead from Austin, with their transfixing wall-of-sound three guitar army like a modern Lynyrd Skynyrd. Long live inspired noise!

Superfrico—at the The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

The new Superfrico—at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas—definitely makes good on its “Italian American  Psychedelic” branding. It’s an imaginative + creative fun house—an excellent Italian restaurant-bar-meets-art gallery meets-performance art space, with theatrical stage lighting throughout, roving surrealist performers and a DJ (Kat Matutina, aka DJ Pickpocket) spinning lots of throwback dance music like Evelyn “Champagne” King and the SOS Band. Everything was a home run—the Chicken Parm, the Sicilian Salad, the Branzino Piccata—including the let’s-live-now desserts. We went all-in for the Tiramisu (coffee, mascarpone, lemon, espresso crumble) + Banana Walnut Tartufo (miso caramel, torched meringue).  It was an elevated experience—one of our best nights in Vegas.

Rincon De Buenos Aires in Vegas’ massive Chinatown

There are many restaurant gems—one after another—here in Vegas’ massive Chinatown which covers three miles. Like Rincon De Buenos Aires, which just celebrated its 25th anniversary. It’s a warm and intimate Argentinian restaurant + Italian deli, located in the Cathay Hills Plaza, with transcendent baked spinach empanadas, lemon-rich chicken piccata (pictured), pizza, flan and tiramisu…all under one welcoming bi-ethnic roof. Had my eye on the Pizza Napoletano, with ham, tomato slices, red  peppers + olives, which was staring back at me from a nearby table. Next time!

Born in the Arizona desert and reared on stages across North America, rock and roll trio THE BLACK MOODS “are currently leading the charge in bringing back melodic rock here in the 21st Century” (Loudwire) which they will prove as they bring their blazing live show to the Showroom at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, AZ on Saturday, February 19. The concert will see the band perform hit tracks from their critically acclaimed 2020 release SUNSHINE and preview material from their forthcoming album due out via Wit Hustle / The Orchard / Steelhorse Entertainment in spring 2022. General admission tickets go on sale this Friday, December 10 at 10:00 A.M. MST HERE. See a video message from the band below.

THE BLACK MOODS were last seen on tour this fall across the U.S. with The Dead Daisies along with a few one-off shows with hard rockers Royal Bliss and an appearance at Aftershock Festival. Scholastic Perspectives praised their performance in Cedar Rapids, IA stating, “Chico Diaz is so sleek behind the kit, Jordan Hoffman grooves the audience into submission on bass and Josh Kennedy wails on vocals and makes his guitar talk.” (9/4/21).

The first track from their as-yet-untitled third album, “She Gets Out,” was released across digital platforms on November 26 in conjunction with the release of its music video via Loudwire. The song acts as a sequel to their Top 20 Active Rock radio single/title track “Sunshine” continuing the storyline of the video’s troubled main character. Watch/stream “She Gets Out” here: https://orcd.co/shegetsout.

THE BLACK MOODS’ upcoming album was recorded at a makeshift home studio in the Ozarks (hometown of KENNEDY) with SUNSHINE’s Grammy-nominated producer Johnny K (Disturbed, 3 Doors Down) and includes a remotely recorded track with legendary Grammy award-winning producer Eddie Kramer (Led Zeppelin, The Beatles) who was based in Canada. Stay tuned for further details in the coming months.

Industrial Rockers CONTRACULT COLLECTIVE Reveal Grotesque NSFW Music Video for New Single “Meek”

DT: DECEMBER 8, 2021

FM: KELLY WALSH, SRO PR

INDUSTRIAL ROCK OUTFIT
CONTRACULT COLLECTIVE
REVEAL GROTESQUE NSFW MUSIC VIDEO FOR LATEST SINGLE
“MEEK”
FOLLOWING REVOLVER MAGAZINE PREMIERE

WATCH HERE

Vice [n.] – 1) an immoral or evil habit or practice 2) a moral flaw or weakness 3) a minor or bad habit
Meek [adj.] – 1) quiet, gentle and easily imposed on; submissive 2) enduring in patience and without resentment 3) deficient in spirit and courage

Los Angeles industrial/hard rock outfit CONTRACULT COLLECTIVE deliver an uncompromising message of taking control of one’s vices in their recent single “Meek,” produced by Arthur Rizk (Ghostemane, Power Trip) which was released digitally on November 26. The band yesterday (December 7) premiered a shocking, NSFW music video for “Meek” via Revolver Magazine who described the song as “an industrialized hard-rock banger,” while stating the video “basically functions as a mini-horror movie with some awesome music soundtracking the scares.”

Directed by Steven Anthony Roe at Media City Studios in downtown L.A., the “Meek” music video shows each band member being forced to confront a terrifying manifestation of their vices, played by contortionist/pole dancer Brynn Route (Kat Von D, Lucha VaVOOM). Watch it streaming via YouTube directly below or HERE.

“Industrial music has always tried to push the envelope of shock and horror, both lyrically and visually,” CONTRACULT COLLECTIVE vocalist SVART states. “Contracult does the same, but with purpose and humility. The song ‘Meek’ is about the vulnerability of addiction and mental health with the lack of accountability for one’s actions within this mental state.”

He continues: “Since there is nothing more horrific than one’s own personal demons, the band and director Steven Roe wanted to present a narrative which visually displayed ours. You will see our friend and talented contortionist/dancer Brynn Route force us to enact our vices of novelty and overconsumption of food and alcohol in a vacant motel room. While the content is triggering, we hope it proves to be as equally provocative as it is grotesque. You’ve been warned…”

CONTRACULT COLLECTIVE was formed by SVART and guitarist CULTPRIT and includes BX on synth/backup vocals. The band—whom MetalSucks lauded as “your new favorite industrial band”—were originally signed to Roadrunner Records and in 2020 self-released two EP’s, A Cult of Opposition and Follow, in addition to being featured in The Pit’s mini-documentary series What Burns in the Soul discussing the relationship between BDSM subculture and heavy music.

The trio recently appeared at Aftershock Festival and Welcome To Rockville, where they first introduced recent singles “Plunge” and their cover of Bad Brains’Sacred Love”—both of which are set to be featured alongside “Meek” on their forthcoming debut full-length album due in summer 2022.

In just under two weeks, the third “ABOVE GROUND” benefit concert founded by guitarists Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) and Billy Morrison (Billy Idol) will take place on December 20 at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Newly added special guests Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), Jason Aalon Butler (Fever333), OTEP, Mickey Avalon, Josh Freese (The Offspring, A Perfect Circle, Danny Elfman), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction, Miley Cyrus), Piggy D (Rob Zombie), Dave Kushner (Velvet Revolver, Sons of Anarchy) and Donovan Leitch join an all-star bill that includes Billy Idol, Perry Farrell, Etty Lau Farrell, Corey Taylor, Taylor Hawkins, Mark McGrath, Steve Stevens, and Franky Perez. Look for the event to also feature host Dr. Drew Pinsky and an art installation by Risk Rock. Tickets are available now HERE.

Following previous successful events in 2018 and 2019, while sitting out in 2020 due to Covid, the evening will celebrate the vinyl album as an art form, with the performance of two seminal albums in their entirety, while at the same time raising awareness and funds for the treatment of mental health. Throughout the event there will be an art installation from multi-talented fine artist, sculptor and graffiti pioneer RISK ROCK.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to MusiCares®, the leading music charity that acts as a safety net for the music community. “MusiCares has literally saved more than a few of our friends from dying,” share NAVARRO and MORRISON. “Their role cannot be overstated, and we have precious few organizations that actively step in to help people on the brink. On the frontline, finding and paying for beds in treatment, arranging therapy and counseling, and actually speaking up on a public level about the importance of mental health are all reasons why we continue to do what we can to draw attention to this subject.”

Navarro and Morrison, with an array of special guests, will perform two musically/culturally seismic albums: Lou Reed’s Transformer (1972) and Sex Pistol’s Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols (1977). As in previous years, they have kept trend of featuring one American artist and one British artist with former installations featuring Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam And The Ants and The Velvet Underground & Nico (2018) and David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and the Stooges’ self-titled debut album, on which the world was introduced to Iggy Pop (2019). Read a Q&A with Navarro and Morrison about the event, and why they chose these albums to perform, here.

A Cool Double Bill: LA Guns & Budderside @ Count’s Vamp’d

Terrific to see L.A. Guns roll into Vegas this past weekend with SRO PR clients Budderside—two bands from Hollywood, CA—for a pair of packed shows at Count’s Vamp’d on Sahara. Budderside, fronted charismatically by Patrick Alan Stone, came on strong with its alt-rock, metal + grunge blend and songs from their 2021 debut album ‘Spiritual Violence’ plus new single “Too Far” that dig deep into mental health turmoil. L.A. Guns delivered the goods as well. With Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis still at the helm, they remain appealingly tough + skillful, and it felt good to hear their  blunt sing-a-longs “Sex Action” and “Kiss My Love Goodbye” alongside tunes from their new album ‘Checkered Past.’ It was a perfect + satisfying double bill…

“Sick of the excuses
Everybody gives
And all the expectations
Not living up to them
I just want to be happy
Always something in the way
Don’t feel like living
One more day”
–BUDDERSIDE, “Too Far” Lyrics

Hollywood, CA rock outfit BUDDERSIDE share their latest single, “Too Far,” available today across all digital platforms. The track is taken from their upcoming summer 2022 record via oneRPM and was recorded with producer Matt Good (Asking Alexandria, Hollywood Undead). The song gives a harrowing look into what can happen when people are pushed to the edge and things go ‘’too far.” Its music video, filmed at several iconic locations on the famed Sunset Strip including the Whisky a-Go-Go and The Rainbow Bar & Grill, premiered yesterday (12/2) via antiMusic. Directed by Vicente Cordero (Industrial Films LA), it shares a visually graphic dramatization tackling mental health issues and triggers.

“We are all so close to the edge,” says vocalist Patrick Alan Stone. “Saying something kind could save a life. It’s easy to be reckless, but what we do and say can push people too far. Hollywood is the city of dreams, where they are born and die every day. I’ve seen good people murder over infidelity. I’ve lost my sister and my two closest friends to suicide over broken hearts, others to overdose–all just trying to ease the pain of a cruel world.”

“‘Too Far’ is about the struggle I’ve gone through with depression and suicidal thoughts after being f*cked over by people around me. I took that depression and turned it into rage to create a song that strips away all of the b.s. It’s a reminder to others to not push people too far, because they can snap and hurt themselves or even others. Just an honest cry for the world to do the right thing. If someone you know is in need of help, you’re not alone. Call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline (1-800-273-8255) or 911, there is help.”

BUDDERSIDE will join glam metal group L.A. Guns for two shows at Count’s Vamp’d Bar & Grill in Las Vegas: tonight, December 3 and tomorrow, December 4. Their set list will include singles from their recent album SPIRTUAL VIOLENCE, released earlier this year via Mötorhead Music/Silver Lining Music, along with previews of new material from their upcoming effort. The band appeared at Rocklahoma festival this year and previously have toured with the likes of Slayer, Anthrax and Motörhead in addition to appearing overseas at festivals including Wacken Open Air, Malmö Festival and on cruises (Motörhead’s Motörboat and Monsters Of Rock).

BUDDERSIDE was formed by STONE following his stint as vocalist of Adler’s Appetite, after receiving encouragement from the late Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead who he worked for as part of his infamous ‘road crew’ and was also a close friend. Lemmy signed them to his own label, Motörhead Music and they released their self-titled debut album in 2016.The group is rounded out by guitarists Sam “Bam” Koltun (Dorothy, Faster Pussycat) and Logan Nikolic, drummer Jeff Dewbray and bassist Gabe Maska—who is currently appearing as Kurt Cobain in the Las Vegas show ’27.’

Eddie Griffin Ongoing Residency at the Hip Sahara Las Vegas

Last night was a perfect one to see comedian + actor Eddie Griffin; it  marked the birthday of his hero—Richard Pryor—which he noted from the outset. As part of his ongoing residency at the newly remodeled + atmospherically hip Sahara Las Vegas, Griffin dug his heels deep into racial injustice, vaccination mistrust, religious hypocrisy + more (he grew up unhappily as a Jehovah’s Witness). With drink in hand, Griffin remains freewheeling, outrageously funny + enlightening. He can make some folks feel uncomfortable, but I think they’re better for it. We started the evening by admiring the vintage Sahara hotel photos in the lobby before segueing into the excellent + stylish Uno Mas Tacos. Really nice to see a taco with Impossible meat on the menu. Extra points for that, not to mention their beaded lighting fixtures. ?
