EINAR SELVIK–the Norwegian composer, musician and creative mastermind behind the Nordic folk band WARDRUNA, who use of a wide range of old Nordic instruments and lyrics placed in a contemporary soundscape to musically interpret Old Norse and Nordic traditions–has an exciting week ahead.

Einar will perform one of his most iconic songs, “Voluspá,“ with The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Norwegian vocal ensemble The Edvard Grieg Kor as part of the opening ceremony on Wednesday, May 20 for the Bergen International festival held at the medieval Royal Feasting Hall, Håkonshallen, in Bergen, NO.

Einar will also appear for a full performance on Thursday, May 21 where he will perform songs over the span of his career-including WARDRUNA‘s new single, “Grà“–while being joined by numerous guests including Ivar Bjornson, members of Enslaved and Wardruna band member Lindy-Fay Hella. The concert will take listeners on a musical journey outside Wardruna‘s usually massive soundscape, and instead present a more stripped-down and direct expression where song and instruments such as Kravik-lyre, Bowed Lyre and Hardanger-fiddle play key roles. Einar has gained worldwide recognition for his massive musical contributions to History Channel‘s TV series VIKINGS–which consists of over 60 placements and substantial work on the show’s musical score. Einar recently revealed that he will be composing music for the popular video game series Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, along with the game’s composers Sarah Schachner and Jesper Kyd. Due to the effect of the coronavirus pandemic forcing the closure of warehouses and production facilities, Nordic folk outfit WARDRUNA have made the decision to postpone the release of their fifth full length album, KVITRAVN–which translates to ‘White Raven’–from its originally scheduled release date of June 5, 2020 until January 22, 2021 via BY NORSE MUSIC in the U.S. and SONY MUSIC / COLUMBIA RECORDS (worldwide excl. U.S.). It will remain available for pre-order during this time (links below). WARDRUNA will proceed to keep plans for their anticipated return to North America this Fall on a solo run from September 24 to October 20, dates of which are listed below. The band will continue to reveal new music throughout the year.

“It is with heavy hearts and great disappointment that we announce that our upcoming album ‘Kvitravn’ will be moved to January 22, 2021,” says founder/composer EINAR SELVIK. “Closed-down production factories and heavily reduced logistic services due to the COVID-19 situation makes it impossible to go forth with the release as planned. Nobody knows how long this situation will last and therefore we feel it is best to set a realistic date with a higher certainty of us being able to execute the release in the manner needed. On a more positive note, we plan to release a good handful of songs in the time to come before the full album comes out, so stay tuned!”

Following the release of the album’s debut single “Grá“-translating to ‘grey’ in English-and its transcendent music video which can be seen here, founder/composer EINAR SELVIK (ex-Gorgoroth) has revealed KVITRAVN‘s track listing along with translations for each of the track’s titles.

“For those who want to search deeper into our songs, the upcoming album will contain complete lyrics along with English translations,” reveals EINAR. “When revealing the track list, it also makes sense to show the translations of the titles, so one potentially gets a better idea of the album’s content.”

“Whether the given song is about traditions, spirituality, philosophy or other esoteric subjects, there should always be a potential of learning something,” he explains. “Knowledge, yet knowledge that is not served as overly explained truths, but rather in abstract images and hints that inspire the listener to seek their own understanding–much like the way Old Norse poetry deals with esoteric matters.”

Yet KVITRAVN marks a distinct evolution in WARDRUNA‘s unique sound. In a rich musical tapestry, WARDRUNA use a broad selection of both traditional and historical instruments such as Kravik-lyre, Trossingen-lyre, Taglharpa, Sootharp, Langeleik, Crwth, Goat- horn, Lur, Bronze-lur, flute, Moraharpa, and the record also features guest appearances by a small group of prominent traditional singers, spearheaded by Kirsten Bråten Berg, one of the most important custodians of Norwegian traditional song. Throughout these 11 songs, KVITRAVNdiscusses Northern sorcery, spirit-animals, shadows, nature and animism, the wisdom and meanings of certain myths, various Norse spiritual concepts, and the relation between sage and songs.

“To recite and copy the past is not very difficult, but to understand and integrate ancient thoughts, tools and methods with real purpose into a creation that is relevant to the modern era is truly challenging and remains our prime goal in our work,” WARDRUNA founder Einar Selvik reveals.

“Although the album carries a variant of my own totemic artist name, it has, in this context, little to do with me but rather refers to the symbolism and legends of sacred white animals found in Nordic and other cultures all over the world. These highly regarded ghostly creatures, whether a raven, snake, bear, moose, reindeer, elephant or lion,–are in animist traditions seen as prophetic, divine messengers, and guardians representing renewal, purity and a bridge between worlds.”
