“My goal for Return to the Roots EP,” explains TASH, “was to capture a feeling that I used to have when I played music for no other reason than pure, honest, unfiltered art.”

Today, TASH SULTANA also releases the official live performance visuals for the focus track and fan-favourite “Kiss The Sky”—a song that began as a spontaneous jam and quickly took on a life of its own. Cryptic yet deeply personal, the track’s raw energy first captured fans during a live set and has since evolved into a full-blown anthem. After resurfacing on TikTok earlier this year, teaser clips racked up over 3.5 million views, firmly cementing its place as a standout moment in TASH’s growing catalogue.

TASH SULTANA has joined forces with City and Colour for a special collaboration: ‘Ain’t it Kinda Funny ft. City and Colour,’ the much-anticipated third single from TASH’s upcoming six-track EP RETURN TO THE ROOTS.

LISTEN TO ‘AIN’T IT KINDA FUNNY FT. CITY AND COLOUR’ HERE

Out today (April 30), the track has a rich history and it’s been years in the making. Originally written by TASH as a teenager, it’s one of the earliest songs in their catalogue—a raw acoustic piece born from a deep love for artists like Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver, and, fittingly, City and Colour.

Fast forward to now, and the track has been reimagined, reshaped, and revived—not just to suit where TASH is today as an artist, but as a person on the edge of turning 30.

“That looming milestone makes you reflect,” TASH says. “There’s this pressure that you’ve somehow ‘aged out’, but it’s all bullshit. Thirty’s young. Life’s only getting better. I wouldn’t relive my early 20s for anything—and that realization bled straight into this song.”

“Ain’t It Kinda Funny” sees both artists contribute contrasting yet complementary verses—SULTANA’s leaning into sentimentality, and City and Colour’s offering a reflective, seasoned perspective. Together their vocals balance like yin and yang, bridging generations of experience and emotional insight.

“Working with Tash was an absolute joy,” Dallas Michael John Albert Green, who is City and Colour, comments. “We first connected last year and hit it off right away. That first impression led to me visiting their studio in Australia and eventually creating this song together. Tash is one of the most impressive people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Their passion and work ethic was inspiring. I’m truly grateful to have been invited to be a part of this.”

The result is a track that honors its roots while embracing the present—a poignant and powerful evolution of a song that has travelled with SULTANA for over a decade.

True to form, the recording process also had its moments of levity. As the final touches were being added, including bass guitar, there was an unexpected interruption from TASH’s dog.

“Right as the bass kicked in my dog went into the next room and took a massive stinking hot shit on the floor the size of an AFL football. Talk about a brown note, we were bonded” SULTANA recalls.

A decade into their evolution, multi-instrumentalist, engineer, producer, and entrepreneur TASH SULTANA weaves nostalgia with newfound wisdom, as they reveal their forthcoming EP RETURN TO THE ROOTS out Friday, May 30.

Today TASH unveils the full tracklist for the EP, featuring a powerful collaboration with City and Colour. This standout track brings together two masterful storytellers, blending their distinct styles with deep mutual respect.

The original version of this song is one of the oldest TASH has written and inspired by artists like Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver, and City and Colour. It was only fitting that when reworking the track, City and Colour became part of the journey. When City and Colour announced an Australian tour, TASH reached out, the teams connected, and the song naturally fell into place.

“The song was meant for us, TASH says. “We instantly understood each other and it was a completely natural fit.”

The EP also features the fan-favourite “Kiss The Sky,” a track that first set the internet buzzing when TASH teased it in 2023 via Instagram. Resurfacing on TikTok this year, the teaser videos have received over 3.5 million views, instantly cementing its status as a must-hear anthem.

“Milk & Honey” bursts to life with the unfiltered energy of a track written in just an hour. Rooted in a rock/reggae groove, it captures the whirlwind of restless late-night thoughts—the ones that hit hardest just before sleep. Its raw, hypnotic ‘loop-design’ feels like the pulse of a busker’s open-air jam, alive and unrestrained.

“I hadn’t written a track that was looping-based for a very long time,” TASH explains. “I steered away from it because I felt as though I’d been pigeon-holed as only a ‘looper’ and not so much of a musician/composer/producer.”

With lyrics that rebel against the suffocating rush of the fast lane, this song challenges you to step back, breathe, and embrace the bigger picture.

Accompanying the release is their ‘Live at Lonely Lands Studio’ performance, taking us back to where it all began—a tribute to TASH‘s roots and the magic of those early, unpolished bedroom performances of some early TASH tracks including “Notion” and “Jungle.” Stripped back and free-flowing, this live session captures the pure, unfiltered energy that defined the start of their journey. It’s a rare and intimate glimpse into the soul of their music.

“Milk and Honey is a return to the roots, a return to the beginning of why and how music made me feel in the first place when it was just ‘plug your shit in and jam,’” says TASH. “It was less structured and less focused on delivering a ‘hit’ less pressure to be anything other than just the jam itself.” “I’ve seen a lot in my career as an artist and approaching a more mature side of it 10 years in,” adds TASH. “I’ve seen many fast lanes, been in many fast lanes, crashed the vehicle, rebuilt from the wreck, rehabbed my brain, and it always lands me in the same place—back to the start.”

Like unlocking a memory-hoarding vault, this track recaptures the magic of the beginning—a free-flowing creativity they haven’t felt in years. Multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer, and entrepreneur TASH SULTANA will return to the U.S. this summer with live shows including two festival appearances. The dates kick off July 5 in Chicago at the Rose on the River festival, followed by a July 6 stop at the Levitate Music Festival in Marshfield, MA. TASH will then perform four solo shows including concerts in Los Angeles (Costa Mesa) and Las Vegas (the full itinerary is below). As TASH continues to work on new music, these shows will be the only ones in the U.S.; they last toured here in 2023 on a headlining cross-country tour in support of their SUGAR EP released via their own label, Lonely Lands Records.

For the headlining shows, TASH will be joined by support act soul, jazz, and R&B creative force Chiiild. Helmed by Yonatan Ayal, Chiiild crafts beautiful and thought-provoking hymns that transcend genres. As an artist influenced by everyone from Pink Floyd to Sam Cooke, Chiiild has a knack for melding sounds and coupling them with songwriting that is rooted in both storytelling and social commentary.

About Tash Sultana:

Since they broke through into the Australian music scene more than a decade ago, Tash Sultana has been nothing less than a musical force.

The gender-fluid multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer and entrepreneur has carved out every step in their musical journey over the last 15 years, which has taken them from performing open night mics all over the country, busking the streets of Melbourne to releasing platinum records, accumulating billions of streams, nominations across the globe, to winning awards and selling hundreds of thousands of concert tickets worldwide.

Tash creates, composes, writes, engineers and produces everything that is heard live, and on record. Tash is the band. Their now-famous busking sessions on Melbourne’s Bourke Street catapulted them into the eyes and ears of music fans everywhere, and a viral video of their early song ‘Jungle’ brought them international attention. Since then, it’s been nothing but a meteoric rise.

Their debut album Flow State landed in 2018 and quickly became Gold certified, and spawned Platinum and Gold records with singles ‘Mystik’ and ‘Murder to the Mind’.

In 2019 alone, Tash sold more than 500,000 concert tickets globally, and over the years they’ve notched up major international appearances at festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Montreal Jazz Festival.

Acclaimed second record Terra Firma landed in 2021, and garnered widespread praise for Tash’s raw and reflective songwriting and ambitious musical arrangements. Like everything before it, the entirety of the record was carved by Tash – every instrument that was played, every bit of musical arrangement, every bit of production. But for the first time, Terra Firma saw Tash bring in a couple of close friends and collaborations to co-write – including Matt Corby, Dann Hume, Jerome Farah, and Josh Cashman.

SUGAR, the upcoming EP from multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer, and entrepreneur TASH SULTANA, has a new release date, August 18. Due out via their own label, Lonely Lands Records, it’s available for pre-order now here.

The new release date comes as TASH prepares to launch their 32-city headlining North American tour. The shows follow summer performances in Europe and kick off August 22 in San Diego before wrapping October 1 in Memphis and include cities they have never performed in before as well as major festivals appearances. In advance of the EP, TASH recently released (July 5) a new track, “Bitter Lovers.” The song–which follows two previous singles, “James Dean” and “New York”–takes a different turn with a collaboration featuring American soul R&B artist BJ The Chicago Kid. The song showcases their combined exceptional chemistry and creative synergy. The journey began when BJ shared a demo with Tash during their tour in September 2022.

SUGAR was co-engineered, produced, composed and arranged by TASH who played every single instrument on the EP. TASH–who withheld releasing any new projects for over two years–came into the EP with a refreshing perspective, described as a combination of past, present and future workings. The new release embodies their commitment to innovation and artistic exploration. Fans will hear this as a teaser of an “album cut in half.”

TASH reveals that the EP’s theme serves as a reflection piece, encapsulating their life from 2021 to 2023. It is a captivating storytelling experience incorporating cryptic wording and musical style, leaving the true message open to interpretation. TASH ensures that no one will ever fully discover the true meaning of the message.

TASH wrote the songs for the SUGAR in the comfort of their own home, studio, and mind, with their notebook serving as a creative companion throughout the journey. This intimate environment allowed TASH to explore their musical vision and fully bring it to life.

TASH SULTANA–multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer, and entrepreneur–is making waves with the announcement of their upcoming EP, SUGAR, set for release August 11 via their own label, Lonely Lands Records, and available for pre-order now here. In advance of the EP, TASH has released a new track, “Bitter Lovers,” out July 5. The song–which follows two previous singles, “James Dean” and “New York”–takes a different turn with a collaboration featuring American soul R&B artist BJ The Chicago Kid. The song showcases their combined exceptional chemistry and creative synergy. The journey began when BJ shared a demo with Tash during their tour in September 2022.

TASH explains, “Pretty sure it’s like any typical modern-day music collab. We had been following each other for a while cause I’m a fan of what he does, and lo and behold, one morning, I woke up, and there was a nice little message in my DM’s from BJ saying, ‘let’s fucking do a track.’ Now here we are.”

TASH began working on the track in their own Lonely Lands Studio laying down the verse and chorus harmonies and flipping the ending with beat sampling, heavy basslines, and a sax solo. But the missing piece wasn’t filled until February 2023, with the final touches laid in person at a Los Angeles studio. BJ’s verse was crafted on the spot, and the harmonies were laid before the verse, an interesting approach to working almost completely backwards.

“It means something different to both of us, which is why we decided to split a verse each and come together in the chorus,’ TASH explains. “For me, some people just think you’re going to be waiting around forever, in any capacity, for a friend, lover, or family member. I got boundaries with people, and that’s what I’m getting at in this track.”

“This was one I had in the stash waiting for a good home, or I would use it myself,” BJ says. “So happy Tash loved it as much as myself. This one will only get better with time.”
