THE NOCTURNAL AFFAIR is closing out 2026 on a high note. Fresh off a 33-date UK/European with Fear Factory and their Top 40 Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay hit “Oxygen,” the Las Vegas-based dark rock band—Brendan Shane (vocals, keyboards), Dru Prechtl (guitar), Kellen Kroll (guitar), Tony Carboney (bass), and Kyle Cunningham (drums)—recently shared two riveting tracks, “Deal With It” and “Choke,” from their upcoming 2027 album. They’ll also headline a hometown show Saturday December 12 at Fremont Country Club in downtown Vegas presented by the city’s rock radio station KOMP 92.3 and billed as “X-mas In The Dark 2.”
“Our show has evolved and we’re using digital mapping, live string sections, new lights, and lots of production,” says Brendan Shane in a Q&A below. “We’re creating something that envelops the entire crowd. When you leave, you feel like you were a part of the Nocturnal experience.”
THE NOCTURNAL AFFAIR’s upcoming album (exact release date TBA) will mark the band’s second full-length album following 2022’s (Meta) morphosis. Their discography includes the six-song EP Glass Ego (2026) which features “Cross Me Out,” their first Top Forty Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay hit. The album will feature new tracks like “Save Me,” “Let You Go” and “Never Coming Back” which underline the band’s evolution with new layers of sound and subtleties.
Overall, the explosive live act has toured extensively in the US and completed 5 overseas tours and 63 total shows overseas. They’ve performed alongside acts like Hellyeah, Asking Alexandria, Fozzy, and Pop Evil.
Q&A with Brendan Shane of THE NOCTURNAL AFFAIR
–Songs like “Oxygen” (April 2026)—along with upcoming tracks like “Save Me,” “Never Coming Back,” and “Let You Go”—underline The Nocturnal Affair’s ongoing evolution. Can you describe this evolution and how these songs are moving the band forward?
I’ve never been one to run in place when it comes to genre and songwriting. From our demos to the (Meta)morphosis album to the track “Cross Me Out” and on, I’ve always been about evolving, finding more ways to better express myself and trying to connect with listeners on a new level. These new songs are exactly that, but don’t get comfy.
–The band recently released two tracks that will also be on the upcoming album: “Deal With It” and “Choke.” Both songs have the sonic ferocity and strong emotional drama the band has become known for. Maybe you can riff a little about the band’s commitment to keeping things heavy while you’re concurrently evolving your sound?
That’s the catch with this evolution. I’m committing to nothing but our want for expanding as artists and putting on the best show we can when you see us live. Why purposely pigeonhole myself to one genre? Why snub out honest expression?
–What was your mindset when you wrote “Choke” (September 2026)? It’s a seething and venomous track, with lyrics like “You wanna hate me for the fuckin’ reasons you failed/You wanna break my image cause you’re stuck in hell.”
Accountability. The kind of people this song is about love to place blame once they’ve faced the consequences to their actions. This is a farewell to those who refused to change but hated me for not sitting there and taking more shit from them. They’re miserable and stuck in their own hell of negativity and self-loathing and as they say, “misery loves company.” So they do anything they can to drag you down to hell with them. No thanks.
–“Deal With It” (September 2026) also goes to a lyrically dark place. You’re taking no prisoners as you dissect a relationship that’s descended into chaos: ”I have a picture perfect moment playing in my mind/You finally let go and move on/You complicate, manipulate so you can bend the truth/Cause in your eyes you do no wrong.” What inspired you to hold absolutely nothing back here?
If you’ve ever dealt with a toxic ex who can’t let go or an old friend who loves to drama monger and you try to cut ties but they just can’t seem to keep your name out of their mouth or off their fingertips, this is your anthem. It’s like, “Yeah, I’ve fucked up at times but I moved on and became better, why can’t you? I’m gonna keep getting better. Deal with it.”
–Can you talk about The Nocturnal Affair’s overall sound and how you would like to see it described?
I’ve always said “dark rock” due to my love for the darker keys and scales of music theory I apply to a lot of the songs. When the band started, we were too heavy to be called goth and too alternative to be called metal. As we’ve evolved, I don’t even know what to call the upcoming songs but I’m not worried about it. Describe it how you see fit. I’ll keep doing my thing and if people connect with it…see ya at the show.
–The band has notably done 5 overseas tours and 63 total shows overseas beyond touring in the U.S. If you overheard some fans talking after the band’s live show, what would you like to hear them say?
My favorite stories I hear are those that tell of our shows bringing new friends together. People who have come out to see us and connected with others like them. At my core, I write music and perform because I want others who have been through similar things in life to know they’re not alone. The radio raised me. I was alone a lot as a child. Music was there for me. I believe it’s my turn to be there for others with my music.
–Can you describe your best night on tour, ever?
One of the most memorable for me was Hull, UK on our run with Wed 13. I met a lot of fans after the show that night who drew things for me, made things for us, introduced us to friends they turned onto our music and gave us all the biggest hugs like it was a Nocturnal family reunion.
–Your upcoming headline show at Fremont Country Club will be an important one for the band as many greats have been on that stage including Green Day and Corey Taylor. Can you talk about The Nocturnal Affair being a Las Vegas band and what that means?
Coming from one of the entertainment capitals of the world means you need to know how to bring it, how to entertain, how to evolve. Our show has evolved and we’re using digital mapping, live string sections, new lights and lots of production. We’re creating something that envelops the entire crowd. When you leave, you feel like you were a part of the Nocturnal experience.
–Have any particular books or films helped shape your sensibility as an artist?
Growing up, the scores of John Carpenter, Danny Elfman, and Andrew Loyd Webber paved the way while I read of Lestat De Lioncourt becoming a Rockstar in Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles.”
–If you knew it was the last night on Earth, which album would you put on and why?
Duran Duran’s Rio. Songs from the album captured a lot of key moments in my life up until now that have plucked the heartstrings of the emotional spectrum. Heartache, Love, Happiness, Melancholy, Curiosity, etc. If the world was ending now, those songs would lead the charge as I’d grab my favorite person and dance with a few bottles of wine.
