The messages that transcend time through centuries of storytelling are alive in this collection of songs and will be heard and felt for centuries to come thanks to Wardruna.”
Thank Folk For That, 1/28/21

Selvik’s commanding vocals, accompanied by bowed instrumentation, percussion, and a deep horn, combine to create a fantastic landscape of sound…Featuring stringed and bowed instruments, the symphonic composition redefines orchestral and classically sounding music by reimagining it as a traditional Norse take on that.”
New Noise Magazine, 1/22/21

WARDRUNA are displaying to the best of their abilities, masters in their craft, Kvitravn being no exception to that but the strength that holds this album up is unlike anything that could have been expected. Its simplicities make for complex and beautiful soundscapes.”
Distorted Sound, 1/20/21

The visceral intensity to this music sports both elegant beauty and grimacing grit. Closer “Andevarljod” encapsulates this balance of scene-setting nuance and infectious spirit. The song’s 11-minute run-time brings some of the most overwhelming crescendos of the band’s career, topped by some incredible vocal performances from Selvik.”

WARDRUNA ‘Kvitravn’ Out Worldwide Today (January 22) via BY NORSE MUSIC and SONY MUSIC/COLUMBIA RECORDS

TRADITIONAL NORDIC FOLK OUTFIT
WARDRUNA
ANTICIPATED NEW ALBUM
KVITRAVN
OUT WORLDWIDE TODAY, JANUARY 22

Traditional Nordic folk outfit WARDRUNA’s highly anticipated fifth full-length album KVITRAVN is out today, January 22, worldwide via BY NORSE MUSIC and SONY MUSIC / COLUMBIA RECORDS. Order it on various formats and bundles here: https://wardruna.lnk.to/Kvitravn_Album.

“We are very happy to finally share this long-overdue album with you all,” shares founding member and composer EINAR SELVIK. “In the period leading up to the release, it has been truly overwhelming to see how well you have received the songs we have shared so far. We sincerely hope you will enjoy the rest! For me personally, this album represents a natural continuation and development of everything we have done so far. Through experience, reflection and hungry curiosity, we potentially continue to grow as humans, scholars and musicians and with this constant movement, our ability to dive deeper into our work also grows. More clearly than before, this album and its songs address us as humans in our own time. Even though the songs convey ways and words originating from a distant past, they are still just as much ways and words for the ‘now.’ They are ideas born out of the very grounds we still tread, which is also what gives them the ability to speak to and resonate within us still. Let us listen carefully and sow or reaffirm the idea or attitude that nature is something sacred.”

KVITRAVN marks a distinct evolution in WARDRUNA‘s sound. The album features a broad selection of both traditional and historical instruments such as Kravik-lyre, Trossingen-lyre, Taglharpa, Sotharpa, Langeleik, Crwth, Goat-horn, Lur, Bronze-lur, flute, Moraharpa and also features guest appearances by a small group of prominent traditional singers, spearheaded by Kirsten Bråten Berg, one of the most important custodians of Norwegian traditional song. Throughout its eleven songs, KVITRAVN discusses Northern sorcery, spirit-animals, shadows, nature and animism, the wisdom and meanings of certain myths, various Norse spiritual concepts, and the relation between sage and songs.

The authenticity of WARDRUNA’s performance alongside epic visual landscapes and symbolic animals evoked by the music and lyrics have been showcased in several jaw-dropping videos–some reaching viewers in their millions–starting with the starkly beautiful, minimalist and arguably most political piece, “Grá.” The song is an ode to the wolf, and a reminder that humans and creatures have existed side-by-side in a mutual, though wary, relationship.  The video for title track “Kvitravn“—translated in English to White Raven–reveals a powerful narrative centered around this sacred, elusive creature, and namesake of the album. SELVIK revealed in a special Solstice broadcast of the Skaldic version of album track “Andvevarljod – Song of the Spirit-weavers” that this particular piece was the starting point for the entire album, and explores the Nordic deities of fate; the Norns, the spinning of life threads and the Norse and Sámi common idea that a person’s spirit is connected to wind, both before and after birth. Most recently the lyric video for “Skugge“, recalls the subtle majesty of fan-favorite “Helvegen,” as it seeks answers and wisdom internally. Finally, the stand-alone single “Lyfjaberg” (not featured on the album) is a powerful reminder of some valuable Norse wisdom explained by SELVIK: “To climb the Healing-mountain is a journey for the mind and spirit as much as the feet and body. Anything of true value, comes at a true cost.”

For those looking to delve even deeper into WARDRUNA‘s world, the band have released a four part mini-documentary series which can be viewed on their YouTube channel HERE. In the series, SELVIK guides the viewer more deeply into the thoughts, processes and inspiration behind the music.

SELVIK will be hosting a special live-streamed event as part of That JORVIK Viking Thing online festival on Saturday, February 20 at 7.30 P.M. CET. Tickets can be booked online at jorvikthing.com.

WARDRUNA have also announced a collaboration with 2204 for an exclusive luxury ethically sourced, 100% vegan candle. Out today, the WARDRUNA candle embraces the harshness of the Norwegian forest’s elements and extracts a sense of reincarnation and fulfilment. Order yours now HERE.

In advance of the worldwide January 22 release of their highly anticipated fifth full-length album KVITRAVN via BY NORSE MUSIC and SONY MUSIC / COLUMBIA RECORDS, the traditional Nordic folk outfit WARDRUNA have shared a new single “Skugge.” Translated to “Shadow” in English, the song traces an eerie sonic journey voicing a dialogue between man and shadow. Its brooding introduction recalls the subtle majesty of fan favorite track “Helvegen” (from their 2013 album Runaljod – Yggdrasil) as WARDRUNA‘s idiosyncratic synthesis of hypnotic percussion and delicate vocal interplay comes to the forefront. The lyric video for “Skugge” was recorded by Ragnarok Film with producer/director Ole Fredrik Wannebo, photographer/editor Toni Kotka and Sverre Brandtzaeg. Watch it below or view it across all streaming platforms along with pre-order options for KVITRAVN HERE.

Each track on KVITRAVN is ingrained with meaning that delves deep into the philosophical, the esoteric, the Nordic myths and how old traditions define human nature and nature itself. “‘Skugge’ feels particularly personal for it shifts the focus inwards,” remarks founding member and composer EINAR SELVIK. “It is a song about shadows, echoes and the balance between seeking answers and wisdom internally and externally. The accompanying lyric video allows the listener to journey deep into Wardruna’s world and offers space for reflection and contemplation, should you submit to it…”

The event will be streamed live from Norway on Saturday, February 20 at 7:30 P.M. CET. Tickets can be found at jorvikthing.com or jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk.

With a sound that must truly be experienced live, they performed their first-ever concert in front of the 1,500-year-old Gokstad Viking ship in Oslo, NO and are the only band to have ever been allowed to hold an amplified concert at the Viking ship museum. WARDRUNA will continue to keep Norse traditions relevant in today’s society with their unique blend of contemporary compositions with traditional and historical instrumentation and narratives. In celebration of the Winter Solstice (12/21)—one of the most important ancient Pagan holidays—the band have today, December 22, released the third single, “Andvevarljod,” from their forthcoming 2021 album KVITRAVN. A special Skaldic version of the song was premiered via a livestream on the Winter Solstice along with a speech on its importance and meaning by WARDRUNA founder/composer EINAR SELVIK.

Andvevarljod,” translated in English to “The Song of The Spirit-Weavers,” explores the Nordic deities of fate (also known as the Norns), the spinning of life threads and the Norse and Sámi common idea that a person´s spirit is connected to wind, both before and after birth. It features guest appearances by a small group of prominent Norwegian traditional singers including Kirsten Bråten Berg, Sigrid Berg, Unni Løvlid and Ingebjørg Reinholdt alongside WARDRUNA’s own Lindy-Fay Hella.

“On a personal level, ‘Andvevarljod’ is a song I hold very dear and it was also my starting point on the new album,” shares SELVIK. “Musically, it gives voice to very old song traditions and on top of that, it is voiced by some of the most central reasons why these traditions are being kept alive for us and the generations to come. Special thanks go out to our guest singers for lending us their talents and for the invaluable work they do for keeping our traditions alive!”

Nordic folk outfit WARDRUNA Unveil Epic Music Video for Title Track “Kvitravn” (White Raven)

DT: OCTOBER 16, 2020

FM: KELLY WALSH, SRO PR

NORDIC FOLK OUTFIT
WARDRUNA
REVEAL EPIC MUSIC VIDEO FOR TITLE TRACK
KVITRAVN

ALBUM DUE JANUARY 22
VIA BY NORSE MUSIC (U.S)
FOLLOWED BY FALL 2021 N. AMERICAN TOUR
(9/23 – 10/21)

WARDRUNA—who are widely known for their ability to transcend music genres, cultures and languages while introducing innovative and genre-creating renditions of ancient Nordic traditions and using a broad selection of both traditional and historical instruments–are excited to reveal the monumental music video for the title track of their upcoming fifth full length album, KVITRAVN—which translates to ‘White Raven.’ The album is set for release on January 22, 2021 via BY NORSE MUSIC in the U.S. and SONY MUSIC / COLUMBIA RECORDS (worldwide excl. U.S.). The album continues where their RUNALJOD trilogy left off in 2016 with RUNALJOD – RAGNAROK–which charted at #1 Billboard’s World Music charts in the U.S. and Canada.

Kvitravn” is out today, October 16, across all digital platforms along with the exclusive premiere of its epic music video seen below. The video for “Kvitravn” was produced by Ragnarok Films–who also recorded the video for the single “Lyfjaberg” which the band wrote, recorded and filmed earlier this year amidst the pandemic. It was filmed at several locations across Norway and Russia.

“I am very excited to finally share this song with you,” states WARDRUNA founder/composer Einar Selvik. “‘Kvitravn’ is a song that explores traditions of animal-guides and the symbolism and legends of sacred white animals found in Nordic and other cultures all over the world. These highly regarded ghostly creatures, whether a raven, snake, bear, moose, reindeer, elephant or lion–are in animist traditions seen as prophetic, divine messengers, and guardians representing renewal, purity and a bridge between worlds.”

He continues with details on filming the “Kvitravn” music video sharing:

“Being fully aware of how rare it is to come across white ravens, we knew from the start that this would be an ambitious and challenging task to pull off. However, fate seemed to be on our side in this and the ‘impossible’ piece of the puzzle fell into place as if gifted from the divine. The video was shot in various locations in Norway and Russia and was produced by Ragnarok Film, the same team responsible for our previous video for the song ‘Lyfjaberg.’”

His track “Hrafnsmál – The Words of the Raven” is included on the game’s soundtrack EP Assassin’s Creed® Valhalla—Out Of The North which is out now via Lakeshore Records. The prestigious EGIL STORBEKKEN´S MUSIC PRIZE 2020–a national honorary award that was created in memory of the Norwegian musician, composer and cultural bearer Egil Storbekken was awarded to Selvik this year due to his extraordinary efforts and works with Norwegian folk music, especially the older folk instruments.

U.S.). Widely known for their ability to transcend music genres, cultures and languages while introducing innovative and genre-creating renditions of ancient Nordic traditions, KVITRAVN marks a distinct evolution in WARDRUNA‘s unique sound. In a rich musical tapestry, WARDRUNA use a broad selection of both traditional and historical instruments and include guest appearances by a small group of prominent traditional singers, spearheaded by Kirsten Bråten Berg–one of the most important custodians of Norwegian traditional song. EINAR SELVIK– the Norwegian composer, musician and creative mastermind behind the Nordic folk band WARDRUNA, who use of a wide range of old Nordic instruments and lyrics placed in a contemporary soundscape to musically interpret Old Norse and Nordic traditions-was enlisted to work on the score for the next installment of the Assassin’s Creed® franchise, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla alongside BAFTA Award-winning Danish composer Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed, Ezio Trilogy) and American composer Sarah Schachner (Assassin’s Creed Origins). In partnership with Ubisoft, Lakeshore Records today (July 17) have released a seven-track EP of original music taken from the forthcoming official soundtrack Assassin’s Creed® Valhalla-Out Of The North which features SELVIK‘s track “Hrafnsmál – The Words of the Raven.” The track was premiered yesterday (July 16) via Loudwire who lauded its “stirring musical soundscape.”

“It´s a great honor for me to be welcomed into this massive Assassins Creed entity and long-time pillars of historical storytelling in games,” says SELVIK.”I have been tasked by Ubisoft to create music that displays and builds upon authentic Norse historical musicality. Through historical instruments, their inherent tonalities, oral poetic traditions and language, I have aimed to make creations that could potentially bring the player closer to the theme and era of the game. It feels great to finally be able share the first piece of music with you all!”

After being forced to postpone the release of their upcoming album KVITRAVN to January 22, 2021 due to extenuating circumstances throughout the world, traditional Nordic folk outfit WARDRUNA decided now was not the time to be silent and headed into the studio to write and record a new song, “Lyfjaberg.” The title translates to English as a ‘healing-hill’ or ‘healing-mountain’ and is known from Norse mythology and the Eddic poem Fjölsvinnsmál as a place of comfort and cure for the sick and sore who manage to climb the mountain and bear offerings at its shrines. WARDRUNA filmed a music video for “Lyfjaberg” that was filmed in the mountains of the island Tustna in Norway. Watch the video now, along with translated lyrics in the description, on YouTube HERE or streaming below.

The band shot the video in early May, when suddenly winter decided to return with full strength, and they ended up wading in half a meter of snow for three days and nights. On many levels, the process of making of this video reflected the meaning of the song itself. They all had to climb a few of their inner mountains to get it done.

“The song expresses that climbing a tough mountain, both in reality and metaphorically, is a mental as well as a physical effort,” shares founding member and composer Einar Selvik. “I have tried to write this journey up the mountain as one for the mind and spirit as much as the feet and body. Anything of true value, comes at a true cost.”

Nordic Folk Outfit WARDRUNA Announce New Single “Lyfjaberg” Out June 5

DT: MAY 26, 2020
FM: KELLY WALSH

NORDIC FOLK OUTFIT

WARDRUNA

ANNOUNCE NEW SINGLE

“LYFJABERG”

OUT JUNE 5

When circumstances forced Nordic traditional folk outfit WARDRUNA to postpone the release of their upcoming album KVITRAVN via BY NORSE MUSIC in the U.S. and SONY MUSIC / COLUMBIA RECORDS (worldwide excl. U.S.), it was clear to the band that they still wanted to release new music. Music and art can potentially carry great meaning in times of uncertainty so WARDRUNA decided that now was not the time to stay silent and headed straight back into creative mode and the studio to write and record the song “Lyfjaberg.”

The Old Norse word ‘Lyfjaberg’ translates to English as ‘healing-hill’ or ‘healing-mountain’ and is known from Norse mythology and the Eddic poem Fjölsvinnsmál as “a place of comfort and cure for the sick and sore who manage to climb the mountain and bear offerings at the shrines there–a gift demands a gift in return.”

WARDRUNA founding member and composer Einar Selvik comments: “The song expresses that climbing a tough mountain, both in reality and metaphorically, is a mental as well as a physical effort. I have tried to write this journey up the mountain as one for the mind and spirit as much as the feet and body. Anything of true value, comes at a true cost.”

Lyfjaberg” will be available on all digital platforms on Friday, June 5.
