Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame 2022 inductee DAVID MALLOY, today (April 30,) shares “Mason’s Wallet,” the third single and video from his debut album MIRROR, released Friday, April 26 via Nashville-based indie label Creative People with distribution by CmfShft. The album is a moving journal of MALLOY’s life, his love and loss. Listen to the song HERE and watch the video HERE.

The artistic triumph of “Mason’s Wallet,” and its compelling and beautifully shot video, is how MALLOY makes the personal “universal.” It reminds all of us about how those we’ve lost can live on in our hearts and minds. The video was directed and edited by Andrew Rozario, with cinematographer, Mike Stryker for Casting Life Films, and Ian Buchanan, created visual effects for Ian B. Designs.

“Writing ‘Mason’s Wallet’ was the start of the body of work that has become this album, says MALLOY, relating the story leading up to his writing this song about the loss of his son. “My stepbrother’s friend is a very successful spirit medium in Tucson Az. We were all having dinner one-night, pre-Covid. My father, Jim Malloy, had just passed away a few months prior and she kept saying she wanted to do a free reading for me, and my father was asking her to do this. My dad had been my mentor and best pal my whole life, so I was not surprised that he would ask for this if you believe in afterlife connections. I never get readings of any kind because I don’t want someone’s words about me or my future to be planted in my head, but this one time I caved in and said ‘OK.’ He continues, ‘During this session with this medium, she said, ‘your son wants to talk to you and wants to know why you’ve stopped writing songs, and if you would start back writing that he wants to help you.’

“Flash forward three years post-Covid, my wife Kathy and I decided to move out of downtown and live by a golf course. I’ve been playing golf since the age of 10. I had heard that the artist Luke Bryan was also a member of the course, and I didn’t know much about him, so I decided to watch a three-part documentary about his life. I did not know that he had gone through the loss of his brother and shortly after that, he lost his sister. They were all very close and of course this hit Luke extremely hard. Watching him speak about this, I found closure after 18 years of inwardly grieving over the loss of my own son, Mason. ‘I put Mason’s wallet in my right front pocket 18 years ago.’ These words are the opening line of the song ‘Mason’s Wallet.’ I’ve listed Mason as my co-writer on the song and he’s been with me in spirit throughout this project. I felt I was driven/pushed to write and create this music. God bless you Mason David Malloy.”

MIRROR is producer and hit songwriter DAVID MALLOY’s debut endeavor as a recording artist. “Something in my spirit was driving me to write these songs and record them.” Malloy continues, “So why now? Answer is, I wasn’t ready. Sounds ridiculous looking at my track record through the years, but that’s how I’ve felt, like I was a late bloomer. God isn’t done with me, there’s still more for me to do. I’ve survived kidney cancer, the downtown Nashville Christmas bombing and the worst…. the soul-crushing loss of my only son, Mason. Now here I am with 14 new self-penned songs and an album, except for the lyrics of the second verse of an older song called “Vital Signs” that Kris Burgenes co-wrote. DAVID MALLOY today (March 13) shares the second single and video “A Brand New Day,” from his upcoming debut album MIRROR out April 26 via Nashville-based indie label Creative People with distribution by CmfShft. Written by the legendary songwriter, it’s an uplifting song about second chances in life and delivers an upbeat vibe with a feel- good message of hope. “I love this track and it always puts a smile on my face—the way I want to wake up every morning” says Malloy. “A Brand New Day” was co-produced with Paul Childers and recorded at County Q studios in Nashville. He shares: “It starts with birds singing, a tribute to my mother who always fed birds, and then sonically sweeps into me pounding out the rhythm the song was written around. I got the idea early one morning while taking my dog ‘DJ’ out for a short walk. I was stopped by how beautiful the colors in the sky were that morning and when I looked toward the west, I could still clearly see the moon in the sky. Standing there I said, ‘Good morning sunshine. Good night moon’ and then my next line is what I say to my wife Kathy, “good morning sweet love, good morning to you.” I wrote the rest of the lyrics about second chances, one more time to get it right, to make amends if you’re a ‘cold heart breaker’ and acknowledging the spirit, the soul and the one whose always in control.’”

The colors MALLOY saw in the sky that morning helped to inspire the look and feel of the “A Brand New Day” video and to cast his dog “DJ,” a three year old 100% German shepherd, in it. The video was directed by Andrew Rozario for Casting Life Films with animator, Beau Burnette and illustrator, Ian Buchanan.

MIRROR is a journal of DAVID MALLOY’s life, his love and the loss of his only son who passed away 18 years ago. MALLOY stepped back from his career for a time but was re-inspired to create once again when a conversation over dinner with friends and a psychic medium happened to be at the table. She offered MALLOY a private reading, from which he said he normally does not subscribe to that sort of thing, but a message was given to him from his son asking him why he wasn’t writing songs, thus triggering the music and the lyrics that surfaced from his heart and soul and now appear on this album that comes out April 26. DAVID MALLOY, Nashville songwriter and producer of approximately 40 #1’s that he’s either written and/or produced throughout his prolific and highly successful musical career, has been encouraged by friends and peers to write a book about his life. But that was not something he was interested in doing. “Instead,” Malloy shares, “I wrote an album.” And that album, MIRROR, is due out APRIL 26. The album’s first single and official music video “I Play Gimme Shelter” is released today, January 11. Listen to the song HERE and watch the video HERE.

“I Play Gimme Shelter,” written by MALLOY and co-produced with Nashville-based musician and producer Paul Childers, also features background vocalist Jackie Wilson (Season 10 Top 40 “American Idol” Finalist). For the first time in MALLOY’s career, he now stands in the artist’s spotlight and discloses, “Of all the artists I have worked with, there is one artist I have never had the honor or privilege of producing or writing songs for…myself!” He says the decision to release “I Play Gimme Shelter” as the first single from MIRROR was because of “all the chaos and tension now surrounding us in this world. This song had to be the first single.”

MALLOY goes on to say that THE ROLLING STONES’ song “Gimme Shelter,” the first single released on their 1969 Let It Bleed album was reflective of that period of time and energy as stated by MICK JAGGER in a December 14,1995 interview in Rolling Stone magazine (here) as being “kind of an end-of-the world song,really. It’s apocalypse; the whole record’s like that.” MALLOY states that it “reflects our current times unfortunately. I love everything about the Stones’ song ‘Gimme Shelter.’ It sucks you in from the get-go. Some songs you can’t play loud enough, and ‘Gimme Shelter’ and ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ are those songs for me. I wanted to write about how much I love them by creating my own song, ‘I Play Gimme Shelter.’” Of course, my greatest joy would be for the Stones to hear this song. Long live rock and roll!”

The official YouTube video of “I Play Gimme Shelter” was directed by Andrew Rozario and DP Michael Stryker of Casting Life Films who also recruited Nashville’s authentic rock quintet Garden of Eden to perform as the young, spirited, and stylish “garage band” in the video that was filmed in various locations in and around East and downtown Nashville, including a hippified and authentic garage band setting where Malloy gets invited in to jam with this group of young rockers to perform “I Play Gimme Shelter” offering musical relief from his long and stressful day as an uptight businessman who needs to let off some steam.
