Globally acclaimed breakthrough Mongolian rock act THE HU are honored to announce they’ve been named UNESCO’s “Artist For Peace” at a ceremony earlier today (November 25) at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, FR by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. They are the first-ever artist in the rock/metal genre to receive this prestigious designation and follow previous “Artist for Peace” recipients including Celine Dion, Shirley Bassey, Sarah Brightman, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller and World Orchestra For Peace. Having met the band on her official visit to Mongolia this past August, Azoulay has acknowledged THE HU’s contribution to the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and their support for the promotion of cultural diversity through music; these are qualities which resonate with UNESCO‘s values and work.

Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, The HU have since amassed a global following and critical acclaim with their unique musical genre they call “Hunnu Rock.” It fuses rock and heavy metal with styles of traditional Mongolian music, such as the art of Khöömei (throat singing), the tsuur flute and the Morin Khuur (horse-headed fiddle), all of which have been inscribed by UNESCO on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. “HU” corresponds to the root of the word “human being” in the Mongolian language. With this name, the group claim their humanist commitment. Through their music, they address the themes of gender equality, respect for difference, and the importance of protecting nature. They also promote linguistic diversity by using endangered regional dialects.

As an “Artist for Peace”–alongside UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors and Champions—THE HU will be designated for a renewable period of two years in which time they will help raise public awareness on UNESCO’s mandate and programs among the general public and youth. THE HU will use their talent and reputation to promote UNESCO‘s values and objectives through upcoming events and projects to help bring a positive change.

THE HU’s UNESCO “Artist For Peace” title lands alongside their previous awards as Cultural Envoy of Mongolia in 2019 and being the first group and 12th overall recipients of the highest state award in Mongolia, the Order of Genghis Khan, which was granted to the band by the President of Mongolia, Kh. Battulga in 2020.

“Mongolians have upmost respect for our history, culture and the language that was left to us from thousands of years ago from our elders and ancestors,” says band leader and throat singer Gala. “The HU’s goal and purpose is first and foremost to perform a unique genre of music that gives strength and power upon every listen. Secondly, it is to show the world Mongolia’s nomadic and environmentally aware livelihood that has been passed down from previous generations and to inspire others to live minimalistic lives and enjoy life to its fullest. UNESCO electing the HU with ‘Artists for Peace’ designation shows their appreciation towards cultural diversity and heritage pieces that are of great value to Mongolians. The partnership between the HU and UNESCO will bring awareness towards every culture that is distinguished by their unique heritage and core values, so we are excited to be part of a movement that can improve and change so many lives.”

“We sincerely appreciate being selected by UNESCO as part of their ‘Artists for Peace’ and understand the importance of the designation,” adds tumur khuur and tsuur player Jaya. “From a very young age we have been practicing traditional music techniques and instrumentation such as long song, throat singing, horse head fiddle, tsuur and tovshuur, as we know the significance and impact of sharing one’s culture around the world has to rest of the society. Our music delivers profound ideas that are understood in the subconscious mind while delivering hard rock and ethereal tunes. On the surface level, our lyrics and music seem to talk about basic yet important principles of human beings; on a deeper level, they share the preservation of cultures that are in danger of going extinct and allow us to be representatives for groups who have slightly different world perspectives than the modern world. This is a huge inspiration for us and part of our purposes as artists. Therefore, we will do everything in our power to be the inspiration for the cultures that are underrepresented and work with UNESCO to bring them the attention that they deserve.”

“The Hunnu Rock genre’s fundamental values are based on creating safe space in the modern music world for different traditional music styles that are only appreciated by certain geographical regions and has many cultural values to its techniques and history to its instruments,” states THE HU’s producer Dashka. “With UNESCO recognizing that effort and selecting The HU as their cultural ambassador to stand with what we believe in and what we are trying to accomplish is important to not only Mongolians, but to all nations around the world. In any tradition the lores and the music carry so much of their uniqueness and world view, and everybody agree that sometimes the only way to describe one’s perspective is through music. Our goals and priorities will always be to create amazing music and safeguard the pieces of culture that were passed down to us from prior generations.”

THE HU are currently on the last leg of their global headlining tour which concludes in London, UK on December 9. Earlier this year, the band headlined across North America, a run which included their fiery debut performance at Coachella, and was followed by a supporting tour alongside Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth. THE HU released their second album RUMBLE OF THUNDER in July via BETTER NOISE MUSIC which features their eco-conscious debut single, “This Is Mongol”; an epic two-part music video for their nine-minute track “Black Thunder”; and the lively single “Bii Biyelegee.” THE HU have announced a deluxe version of RUMBLE OF THUNDER to be released in spring/summer of 2023 via Better Noise Music, with guest appearances from some of rock’s top musicians. Stay tuned for more information in the new year.

Hailing from Mongolia, THE HU have combined traditional music and instrumentation performed in their native language using native instrumentation with Western modern rock stylings to create a unique and catchy sound they have labelled as “Hunnu Rock.” The acclaimed rock outfit have today, September 2, unleashed their anticipated second official studio album RUMBLE OF THUNDER via Better Noise Music alongside the music video for the track “Bie Biyelegee.” In this lively video, THE HU can be seen dancing in the traditional Mongolian style of “biyelgee.”

“’Bie Biyelgee’ is about having a good time,” share THE HU. “We danced like we never danced before during the video shoot and the movements where we tried to imitate biyelgee were very challenging. The biyelgee movements require a different skill set than you would find in any dance genre so in that way, celebrating these qualities are fascinating and inspiring to us.”

THE HU are currently touring in support of RUMBLE OF THUNDER across the U.S. alongside Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth until October 15, after which they finish off the year with a headlining run throughout Europe and the U.K. Earlier this year, THE HU hopped across the globe on their “Black Thunder” tour which included stops at Coachella (USA), Fuji Rock Festival (Japan) and headlining shows all over North America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Find a list of all upcoming shows and ticket information HERE.

Five Finger Death Punch’s Zoltan Bathory shared his thoughts on the band via Instagram, “The Hu is out on the road with us – great band from Mongolia – you gotta check them out. I’m a Hun, so from the anthropologic perspective they are my cousins.”

Across its 12 tracks, RUMBLE OF THUNDER connects the world to Mongolian culture and its unique core values of natural preservation and spiritual connection with the earth. These core values are on full display in the album along with deeply meaningful lyrics that uplift Mongol people, as the band wishes for prosperity and peace among all. The band shared the eco-conscious debut single, “This Is Mongol,” in May which has since received over 3 million video views and over 1.6 million Spotify streams. In July, they revealed an epic action-packed music video for the first half of their nine-minute track “Black Thunder” before sharing its second equally tantalizing sequel in mid-August.

“‘Rumble of Thunder’ extends the variety of songs that the Hunnu Rock genre has and focuses on bringing new playing techniques that would sound unique and add more hard rock components to the songs,” THE HU state. “It was quite fun to record and most importantly, we had so much time to play and choose the best versions. Creative space and time are crucial, so we are very grateful to our friends and families who had our backs during the lengthy process. We also feel very much in sync in terms of understanding and complementing each other during performance. You will find that we have become an even closer unit in this album with many new surprises.”

Band Kicking Off North American Tour with Five Finger Death Punch, Megadeth, and Fire From The Gods on August 19

Today, July 8, breakthrough Mongolian rock act THE HU announced details of their long-awaited sophomore album ‘RUMBLE OF THUNDER,’ recorded via Better Noise Music, and released a new single called “Black Thunder” along with an official music video. The band’s 12-track second studio album is set for release September 2 and includes “This Is Mongol,” their eco-conscious single released in May, that now boasts over a million streams in less than two months. “Black Thunder” incorporates Mongolian values, telling a powerful story of battle, faith, and death lyrically and visually. The band has been teasing new music from their sophomore album on their headlining Black Thunder Tour, at Coachella, and soon at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival, in Australia and New Zealand, on tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth, and later in Europe and the UK – a full list of dates below. This new music was recorded in their homeland of Mongolia, after their debut album ‘The Gereg’ landed at #1 on the World Album and Top New Artist charts in its first week of release. Pre-order ‘RUMBLE OF THUNDER HERE. See below for a full tracklist. To stream and watch the striking video for “Black Thunder,” click HERE. Fans can purchase tickets to watch THE HU on tour HERE.

Vocalist GALA shared, “‘Black Thunder’ is the crown jewel of our second album. The music video is split into two parts and conveys the core values of men through visuals. Our producer Dashka chose a unique location in Mongolia to shoot the video, where we had a great time riding the horses in the vast grassland of our countryside. We hope that our pride in our culture shines through, as we aimed to bring viewers joy and a piece of our culture through this video.” Speaking on their next studio album, he continued, “Our second album will include ‘Black Thunder,’ along with many new songs. We can’t wait for you to listen and enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording it.”

THE HU’s last official video was set in the Mojave Desert and highlighted their unique core values of natural preservation and spiritual connection with the earth. The video for “Black Thunder” also features an epic backdrop, this time in Mongolia. Directed by Erdenebileg Ganbold and producer Dashka, the video is action packed, taking the viewers through battle and a funeral procession ritual. Watch the official music video HERE.

Earlier this year, THE HU impressed various media with powerful, energizing performances on their Black Thunder Tour and at Coachella, with SF Gate’s Ariana Bindman writing, The last time I fell in love, it wasn’t with a person. It was with a seven-piece Mongolian heavy metal band belting out guttural war cries while playing Motorhead-style riffs with traditional horsehead fiddles, electric guitars and flutes. Behind me, people of all backgrounds bob their heads, raise their fists and scream in harmony. I’m watching THE HU at Coachella, the first music festival I’ve attended since the world forever changed. And they’re f—king epic.”

This summer, THE HU will hit stages across North America, as they head out on tour with Megadeth, Five Finger Death Punch, and Fire From The Gods. The tour starts in Portland, Oregon on August 19, spanning over 30 dates, and closes out on October 15 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Concertgoers are promised an intense multi-faceted night of heavy rock music. Tickets are on sale now HERE.

The band has curated five playlists on Spotify, hand-picked by Gala, Enkush, Jaya, and Temka and feature tracks from their previous album and upcoming release. Listen here:

Band Continuing to Headline Shows This Spring on The Black Thunder Tour

Today, acclaimed Mongolian rock band THE HU released a new single called “This Is Mongol” ahead of their second official studio album set for release later this summer via Better Noise Music. With “This Is Mongol,” as with all of their music, THE HU connects the world to Mongolian culture and its unique core values of natural preservation and spiritual connection with the earth. These core values are on full display in the new, epic official video for “This is Mongol,” also released today. The deeply meaningful lyrics uplift the Mongol people, as the band wishes for prosperity and peace among all. Previously debuting at #1 on the World Album and Top New Artist charts with their 2019 debut album THE GEREG, the band is excited to start dropping new music for fans. Currently on their Black Thunder Tour this spring, THE HU also recently played at Coachella, earning an array of critical acclaim. They will also join Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeath on tour later this summer. Full list of dates below. To stream, download and catch the stunning video for “This Is Mongol,” click HERE.

Speaking about the video, singer and tumur hhuur player Jaya said, “We shot in the Mojave Desert, Nevada and the environment reminded us of Gobi Desert in Mongolia. We enjoyed shooting the video, which happened during our tour and gave us a little break to reminisce about home. The song perfectly matched the environment we made the video in. It was one of the best memories we created as a band and it was special because our producer Dashka was with us to oversee the whole process.”

Enkush, who also sings and plays the morin khuur, shared his thoughts on their tour dates with Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth, “We grew up listening to Megadeth and can’t express how much they have inspired and motivated us to do what we love every day, so you can only imagine our excitement for our next tour with them. Everybody knows Megadeth is one of the four biggest trailblazers in thrash metal and to be performing with a modern band such as FFDP is truly going to be legendary. Although it will be our first time performing with them, we will bring our A-game on this tour.”

Thrilled to be sharing more of their Mongolian roots, producer Dashka said, “Creating this song meant so much to me. We are announcing our arrival through music and specifically through this song. In these uncertain times, I hope we are bringing positivity, empowerment and strength to fight for better days.”

In celebration of their new single and upcoming album, THE HU also released an official music video directed by John Connor Hammond. The visual is set in the Mojave Desert and showcases the band energetically performing their inspiring new single “This Is Mongol.”

Over the last several months, the band has been recording new material in their homeland of Mongolia and shared an update from the studio with fans on their YouTube channel HERE. While on their current headlining tour, the band has been teasing the new music from their much-awaited sophomore album, out late this summer. The tour continues tonight, May 13, in Portland, ME and will see the band journey across the southern U.S. throughout May 29 landing in Dallas, TX before ending in Mexico City, MX on May 31. For more information on The Black Thunder Tour, visit https://www.thehuofficial.com/tour-1.

On the morin khuur and serving as a vocalist, Gala talked about their recording process, “Our second album was recorded during Covid lockdown, where we used the time to put our best effort and astounding amount of energy to focus on the work. Therefore, it is our hope to present our listeners with unique songs that have their own characteristics.”

Temka, who plays the tovshurr and sings background vocals, also spoke about their upcoming album, “The new album has great quality, composition, melody and overall it is sensational. The lyrics that Dashka wrote consist of our traditional values, virtues and wisdom of our ancestors. Our fans can expect to hear and feel the messages we try to deliver through our songs, such as love and respect for parental love, the importance of sustainability and cultural heritage. We can’t wait for our fans to listen and enjoy our second album and are excited to be performing for fans whom we have yet to meet. We will see you very soon and send our regards to our fans all over the world!”

Soon after, THE HU will continue their trek across North America, as they head out on tour with Megadeth, Five Finger Death Punch, and Fire From The Gods. The tour, presented by Live Nation, will kick off in Portland, Oregon on August 19th and span over 30 dates, closing out on October 15 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Concertgoers are promised an intense multi-faceted night of heavy rock music. Tickets are on sale now HERE.

Most recently, the band headlined a tour last fall through North America after joining Halestorm’s headlining tour, reuniting with frontwoman Lzzy Hale, their special guest on Song of Women from their #1-charting debut album THE GEREG. In addition to those tours, THE HU also performed a slew of high-profile festival dates including Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, Rocklahoma, Inkcarceration and more. Those dates coincided with THE HU’s appearance on Metallica’s Special 30th Anniversary ‘Black Album’ Reissue Covers Project, for which they covered the legendary band’s “Through the Never.” They appeared on the track listing alongside some of the biggest names in music – Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Yo-Yo Ma, St. Vincent, Phoebe Bridgers, J Balvin with the Neptunes, Weezer, and many more – who offered their own renditions of Metallica’s songs that originally appeared on the iconic LP.

About The HU
In 2019, an NPR story put a spotlight on “a band from Mongolia that blends the screaming guitars of heavy metal and traditional Mongolian guttural singing,” accurately highlighting the cultural importance and unique musical identity of The HU. Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, The HU, Gala, Jaya, Temka, and Enkush, are a modern rock group rooted in the tradition of their homeland. The band’s two most popular videos, “Yuve Yuve” and “Wolf Totem,” were produced by the band’s producer Dashka. The band’s name translates to the Mongolian root word for human being, and their unique approach blends instruments like the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp) and throat singing with contemporary sounds, creating a unique sonic profile that they call “Hunnu Rock.”

Their debut album, 2019 ‘s The Gereg, debuted at #1 on the World Album and Top New Artist Charts. With it, the band have accumulated over 250 million combined streams and video views to date and have received critical acclaim from the likes of Billboard, NPR, GQ, The Guardian, The Independent, Revolver, and even Sir Elton John himself.

Proving their global appeal, The HU have sold out venues across the world in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, with scheduled festival appearances at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Download Festival, and more, creating a community of fans from all walks of life. They quickly grabbed the attention of the industry, leading to collaborations with Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. And most recently, the band received praise from fans and critics for their Mongolian rendition of Metallica’s “Sad But True,” which Metallica picked up on and invited them to record ‘Through The Never’ for their Metallica Blacklist album released in 2021 alongside other high-profile guest artists like Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Phoebe Bridgers, J Balvin, St. Vincent, and so many more. The band has also explored eclectic ways to reach audiences with their sound, most notably writing and recording music for EA Games’ Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Readying their next chapter as a global force, The HU are putting the finishing touches on their highly anticipated sophomore album, which is due for a global release later this year from Better Noise Music. The Hu will tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth starting August 19th 2022.

Q&A WITH THE HU

Can you tell us which songs from the upcoming album will be performed on the “Black Thunder” tour, why you’re excited to play them and how they represent a new chapter for THE HU?

THE HU: For the “Black Thunder” tour, we’re excited to be performing songs from our new album including “Mother Nature,” “Tatar Warrior” and “ShihiHutu.” We have been working hard on our second album and hope to have it ready soon. It will be focused on showing the unique qualities of the Hunnu Rock genre and consists of many new songs that reinforce the different aspects of it. So far we’ve been getting positive response from our fans and we can’t wait to perform all of our new songs for them.

–What inspired you to call the tour “Black Thunder”?

THE HU: We originated in Mongolia and through our music we try to make our fans feel the freedom and energy of the spirit of our vast land and high mountains. Likewise, the “Black Thunder” name is inspired by the unique scenery that can only be seen in Mongolia in which the thunder rumbles right before the rain in the high mountains, the number of clouds in the sky and the force of the lightning are heard, and seen many, many miles away We tried to communicate the energy and feeling you would get experiencing that and hence we named the tour “Black Thunder.”

A Coachella performance is a prestigious booking since the festival has always stood for musical integrity. Can you discuss what it feels like to be performing at Coachella for the first time in your career? Are there any other artists you’re excited to see performing on the day you play?

THE HU: It is such an honor to be part of Coachella. We’re more than thrilled to be included and it has always been our dream to be performing on that stage representing Mongolia for the first time. We feel that it’s a great opportunity to meet with many of our loyal fans and artists that we love. There are so many talented great artists playing on the day we perform and for the rest of the festival, and if we get a chance, we would love to see all of them.

–You’ve performed in many cities in North America. Can you tell us what it’s like to play for audiences here and how they might be different from ones in Europe?

THE HU: We’ve toured many cities and several continents and met with so many awesome people. Every place has its own characteristics that can be felt through their greetings, hand gestures and chants before, during and after the concerts. In that regard, we would say the biggest differences that we can recall would be the amount of people who would sing along and who’ve memorized the lyrics. Each continent has different accents on singing in Mongolian and we love all of our audiences and their uniqueness.

–What is your favorite part about touring North America? Do you guys ever have the time to explore cities on days off (restaurants, museums, etc.) and if so, what has that been like?

THE HU: Our favorite thing about touring in North America is visiting different places and meeting people. Not only do the restaurants and establishments differ, but each one of them has a unique style. On our days off, we’ve had a chance to taste the most amazing barbecue in Texas, Asian fusion mixed with Mexican spices and sushiritto, etc and explore around everywhere we go. Like their cuisine, Americans are always willing to go the extra mile to make people feel welcome and accepted–we’ve had many people guide us through their cities and towns.

THE HU
MOVE VENUE FOR SOLD-OUT VANCOUVER, B.C. SHOW

As the electrifying act make their way to Canada, the band have been required to move venues for their sold-out October 26 show in Vancouver, B.C. from The Commodore Ballroom to The Orpheum due to limited capacity regulations put in place to combat the spread of covid. THE HU’s live performance has won over fans–including actress and co-host of ABC-TV’s talk show ‘The View’ Whoopi Goldberg who attended their sold-out show at Irving Plaza in NYC (9/18)—as well as critics.

Here’s what some writers are saying of the band’s shows:

“File this one under noise you didn’t think you needed. The seven-piece Mongolian band the Hu plays its guitars with bows and man buns, with backing ‘whoa’ chants and punishing drums. On Saturday at the Tito’s stage, they offer layered, loud rock epics built on classical Mongolian instrumentation. Truly, everything about these dudes rocks. By which I mean you’ll want to raise glasses and bark war chants after taking this set in.”

“This was my very first time seeing them in concert and it certainly won’t be the last. They absolutely destroyed it as they closed out the Renegade Stage on day three at ROK21.The Hu mix a wide variety of traditional Mongolian and non-traditional sting and percussion instruments along with influences and different genres for an unmistakable sound, unique unto themselves. The Hu really are their own genre of music. They have a mix of everything from rock, metal, folk and Mongolian throat singing. They draw from all kinds of influences and genres, when it all comes together it’s incredible!”
– Critter, Z94, Rocklahoma, 9/6/21

“If you don’t already know you are a Hunnu Rock fan, The HU will seal the deal.”
– Carrianne Stoker-Postier, Digital Beat Magazine, 9/11/21 (Asheville, NC)

“Buttressed by guitar, bass, and a pair of percussionists, the core quartet aligned across the stage front in a wall of top knots and truncheon tempos. Recall, if you will, the talkbox intro to Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ and elongate it across T. Rex/Gary Glitter downstrokes as Tsendbaatar exhorts, growls, and drops into a death metal croak. Meanwhile, Austin can’t gawk and stomp along enough.”

SHARE DETAILS ON UPCOMING RETURN TO NORTH AMERICA & NEW MUSIC
IN EXCLUSIVE Q&A

BAND TO BE FEATURED ON METALLICA’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY ‘BLACK ALBUM’ REISSUE COVERS PROJECT, ‘THE METALLICA BLACKLIST’

Globally acclaimed Mongolian rock sensation THE HU are excited to return to audiences across North America this fall on their upcoming headlining tour, “The Hun Tour,” with special guests The Haunt from September 7 to October 31. With five sold-out shows to date (NYC, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver and Flint), tickets are going fast and can be purchased while available at https://www.thehuofficial.com/tour-1.

Before the headline shows begin, THE HU will make their way stateside on September 1 for shows supporting Halestorm, whose frontwoman Lzzy Hale was featured on the empowering track “Song of Women,” included on the deluxe edition of THE HU’s #1 debut album THE GEREG. During the run, THE HU will also perform at several of the U.S.’s most high-profile music festivals including Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, Rocklahoma, Inkcarceration, Louder Than Life and more as well as appear alongside Danish rockers Volbeat for a few select dates.

Read an exclusive Q&A with THE HU below as they talk about returning to the stage for the first time since the start of the pandemic and their experience dealing with its repercussions from a global standpoint. The band also discusses their excitement on reuniting with Lzzy Hale; being included as part of Metallica’s 30th anniversary reissue project; and the creation of new music.

Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, THE HU, comprised of producer Dashka along with members Gala, Jaya, Temka, and Enkush, are a modern rock group rooted in the tradition of their homeland.

Their debut album, 2019‘s THE GEREG, was released via BETTER NOISE MUSIC and debuted at #1 on the World Album and Top New Artist charts.

They’ve quickly grabbed the attention of the industry, leading to collaborations with Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. Most recently, the band received praise from fans and critics for their Mongolian rendition of Metallica’s “Sad But True” (as part of Better Noise’s “15 Years of Rock” series), which Metallica themselves acknowledged on their social media accounts and enlisted them to be part of their upcoming Special 30th Anniversary ‘Black Album’ Reissue Covers Project, with a cover of the iconic song “Through The Never.” The band has also explored eclectic ways to reach audiences with their sound, most notably writing and recording music for EA Games’ Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Readying their next chapter as a global force, THE HU are finishing their highly anticipated sophomore album, which was recorded in their homeland during quarantine. The project is expected to be released in early 2022 via BETTER NOISE MUSIC.

10 QUESTIONS w/THE HU

–What do you think will be going through your minds when the band step onstage September 1 in Lewiston, New York since it will be your first time in front of an audience in a long time due to Covid?

A: We are so excited and we’ll be delighted to be on the stage again. The stage is the place where we live, love and express our messages and feelings. Not being able to perform due to COV-19 reminded us how important this is in our lives.

–What has THE HU missed most about touring?

A: Connecting with our fans through our music is something we missed the most. Of course, there are other parts we missed including having a great time with our entire crew and seeing new places.

–In the months ahead, the band has its North American headlining tour, festival appearances plus shows with Halestorm. THE HU’s collaboration with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm on a new version of “Song of Women” on the deluxe edition of ‘The Gereg’ in 2020 was bold and moving. Can you talk about Lzzy’s contributions vocally and lyrically?

A: Lzzy is an incredibly talented singer, musician and songwriter. She brought a whole other level of dynamics to “Song of Women.” The lyrics that she wrote for this English version are absolutely beautiful and they complement the message of the original version. The first time we heard her vocal recording, it gave us goose bumps. Her sincerity in singing is off the hook.

–On the upcoming tour, THE HU will preview songs from the upcoming album. What can you tell us for now about these new songs and the album?

A: Yes, we will perform several new songs from the upcoming album. We’re highly anticipating sharing these songs because we have worked very hard to make them amazing for our fans. The recording part of the second album is done and now it’s in process of mixing and mastering.

— Does the band have any rituals before hitting the stage?

A: Yes, we do. A few minutes before going on the stage we circle around and chant together just like our ancestors.

–Can you talk about the challenge of performing at festivals where audiences are a mix of your fans plus folks who may not have heard of the band?

A: We don’t see it as a challenge but rather an opportunity. We believe in our music and message therein. We welcome new folks to come and listen to our music and hope they leave as new fans of the band.

–How does THE HU stay positive in such a volatile world given the pandemic, wars, polarizing political views, dramatic weather events and more?

A: As human beings, we’re stronger when we’re united together as we face any adversity. We believe that everyone has a warrior in them. Through our music we want to wake up those inner warriors in each of us so that you can face your fears and overcome them. Also believing in a bright future and accepting others regardless of their race, age, and political views make us stay positive.

–As Mongolians, do you feel you may view the world differently than, say, Americans and if so, how?

A: At the end of the day, we all are human being whether you’re from America or Mongolia. We have more things in common than one might think. For example, we grew up in Mongolia listening to American rock bands just like American kids. We love touring here and meeting with our idols, some of whom we have been fortunate enough to collaborate with.

–THE HU ended its last tour in Australia and were in fact stuck there as the country locked down at the start of the pandemic in early 2020. What was that experience like and how did you make the best of it?

A: Because of the COV-19 restrictions, we needed to stay in Sydney, Australia for about two months in early 2020. Of course, we wanted to return to Mongolia and our families, but it was impossible due to border lockdowns. During that time, we worked on our second album recording and making some episodes of “HU’s in the Kitchen?” We love Australia and would love to go back there to perform again.

–Music fans have really embraced THE HU’s cover of Metallica’s “Sad But True” on Better Noise’s “15 Years of Rock” series. And now you’re offering THE HU’s interpretation of Metallica’s “Through The Never” on the upcoming Metallica Special 30th Anniversary ‘Black Album’ Reissue Covers Project. Can you talk about the influence of Metallica on THE HU?

A: Like millions of people around the world, Metallica has been a huge influence and inspiration for us as music fans and musicians. We admire their 40 years of relentless touring and the timeless, unique music they have created. It is a great honor to show them our respect and gratitude by recording our versions of their incredible songs. We are honored and grateful to be included in the Blacklist.

Mongolian Rock Sensation THE HU Announce 2020 U.S. Tour and Festival Dates

FOLLOWING THEIR MASSIVE GLOBAL DEBUT IN 2019,
THE HU ANNOUNCES NEW U.S. FESTIVAL AND HEADLINE DATES STARTING APRIL 10TH AT COACHELLA
MONGOLIAN ROCK SENSATION’S CURRENT SINGLE
“YUVE YUVE YU (FEAT. FROM ASHES TO NEW)” IS CURRENTLY
#8 ON THE ACTIVE ROCK CHARTS

Mongolian rock sensation THE HU–who ended 2019 with a 75% sold-out North American tour in support of their debut album, THE GEREG (Better Noise Music)–has announced a new U.S. headlining tour. Starting on April 10 at Coachella in Indio, CA, the tour will take them through May 24 in Dallas, TX. This will follow the band’s current sold-out European/UK run.

“We’re so excited by the reaction to our performances and tours everywhere. Our fans are the best and we are humbled by their overwhelming support.   We can’t wait to return to the USA and perform at Coachella and so many other great festivals and venues.” – The Hu

THE HU’s current single “Yuve Yuve Yu (feat. From Ashes To New)” is currently at #8 and rising on the Active Rock Charts. The success of the single is a ‘win’ for diversity in the Rock genre as a whole, with lyrics primarily in Mongolian.

THE HU has been making waves across the globe with many sold-out shows and festival appearances presenting their signature brand of “hunnu rock“–a one-of-a-kind mixture of Western rock music combined with traditional Mongolian instrumentation and throat-singing sung in their native language.

The impact they made in 2019 worldwide is also evident in the critical acclaim and year-end best-of lists that THE GEREG appeared on. Loudwire listed THE GEREG among its Top Albums of 2019 and Revolver Magazine included the band’s video for “The Great Chinggis Khaan” among their Top 10 of the year. In the UK THE GEREG placed among Top Albums of 2019 in Classic Rock and Metal Hammer magazines.

“With so bracing a combination of sights and sounds, the Hu have been forging a highly improbable connection between the complexities of traditional Mongolian music and the 10-ton force of western metal,” wrote Jim Farber in The Guardian (10/22/19).

Coming off their recent sold-out New York City show (November 17) at Bowery Ballroom on their first-ever headlining North American tour, Mongolian rock sensation THE HU are excited to share a new song “Sugaan Essena.” It’s featured on the new EA video game “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.” The game hit stores November 15, while “Sugaan Essena” will be released as a digital single later this year. Find out more about the game and order it here: https://www.ea.com/games/starwars/jedi-fallen-order

The band will continue their triumphant three-month tour through December 10th when they’ll play a second Los Angeles show at The Fonda Theatre (the first L.A. show this past October at the Teragram Ballroom was a sell-out). So far, the band has sold out 37 North American shows and performed at such festivals as Riot Fest (Chicago), Aftershock Festival (Sacramento) and Las Rageous (Las Vegas).

Among the band’s biggest new fans is Sir Elton John. When he recently interviewed the band on his ‘Rocket Hours’ Beats 1 radio show, Elton gave them massive praise by stating: “I’m such a fan of your album [The Gereg], and I want to congratulate you on being one of the freshest most original bands that I’ve heard in many many years.”

Formed in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, THE HU achieved global recognition with three powerful videos that have amassed over 45 million views to date–“Wolf Totem,” “Yuve Yuve Yu” and The Great Chingiss Khan“–showcasing their one-of-a-kind style of ‘hunnu rock’-a combination of American heavy rock played with traditional Mongolian instrumentation such as the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp) and guttural throat singing in their native language.

Their debut album THE GEREG was released on September 13 via Better Noise Music and landed on several Top Ten charts in the U.S., Canada, UK and Australia, and Top 20 charts in Germany and Sweden.

THE HU have recently made their way onto the Mainstream Active Rock charts-positioned at #22 this week–with the reinvigorated release of their viral track “Yuve Yuve Yu” featuring guest vocals from Danny Case of From Ashes To New.
Listen to a stream here https://thehu.ffm.to/fatn. Further singles with guest vocals will be announced shortly including Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) on “Song of Women.

Here’s some critical praise for The HU‘s electrifying performances:

“The Hu had everyone pumping their fists and chanting “HU! HU! HU! HU! HU!” in between almost every song, and their music – which is not the kind of thing you hear every day in America – was genuinely awesome. Don’t mistake The Hu for a novelty act or anything; they are just a great band in general.”
–Andrew Sacher, Brooklyn Vegan, 9/15/19

“With so bracing a combination of sights and sounds, the Hu have been forging a highly improbable connection between the complexities of traditional Mongolian music and the 10-ton force of western metal.”
–Jim Farber, The Guardian, 10/22/19

“The sound is a rumbling, raga-like trance music supplemented by booming tribal beats that veers from a country hoe-down to snippets of Led Zeppelin, Metallica and even the buzzing drone of the Velvet Underground, all delivered in native Mongolian lyrics…The HU pay tribute to their warrior roots on ‘The Great Chinggis Khaan,’ but also demonstrate a more politically correct side with the ‘Song of Women,’ from The Gereg, which is a diplomatic passport used by Mongolian nobles and officials during the 13th century…The tribal stomp cuts through all language and cultural barriers, joining this far-off exotic location and downtown L.A. in a bond of shared humanity, which makes sense because The HU call their music ‘hunnu rock,’ the Mongolian root word for ‘human,’ and a derivation on the ancient Huns.”
–Roy Trakin, Pollstar, 10/15/19
